Video: Rudy’s new un-Tancredoish ad
posted at 11:03 am on January 9, 2008 by Allahpundit
Following on the speculation at the end of the Michigan post about whom Mitt might support if he drops out, I’m amused at the idea of the guy who earned Tom Tancredo’s endorsement in turn possibly endorsing a guy who’d run an ad like this. Heh.
Quoth the mayor, “[Y]ou should be able to have to read English, write English, and speak English if you want to become a citizen.”
Update: Ah, here we go. The translation.
Update: In case it’s not obvious, this ad is very much part of Rudy’s Florida-or-bust strategy.

There are tons of legal Cubans in Florida that would love this ad. There are tons of spanish in florida who are legal and who would respond to this ad.
This isn’t calling for amnesty or illegal aliens to rally or something.
I just wish he’d do an ad in Italian.

I saw a Rudy rally in Florida the other day in a big Cuban community and he was talking about the post Castro era in Cuba. He’s gonna lock up the Cuban and hispanic vote. Niceeeeeee
froghat on January 9, 2008 at 11:20 AM
I believe even Tancredo says he loves Mexican food, and speaks either Spanish or Italian. that doesn’t change where they stand on Amnesty.
Vincenzo on January 9, 2008 at 11:21 AM
This could bite him with the conservative vote. Comes off as pandering. One country, one language. What you speak in your home is your business, but when it is in public it needs to be in the language of the people. A common language.
RobertInAustin on January 9, 2008 at 11:21 AM
WHY does ruDy get a pass for this from you ‘tough on terror/secure the border/english first’ ‘conservatives’?
ThackerAgency on January 9, 2008 at 11:22 AM
By the way, let’s play “illegal” or “legal.” This is from our local police blotter yesterday:

Most of his ads are in English. However, he’s currently operating in Florida, where many people speak English fluently in public, but Spanish in their homes.
And as sad as it sounds, pandering appears to be working.

Well, if this is only run in Florida, where it is almost impossible to be an illegal Cuban (heh. Fred don’t know why that is a fact), I don’t see how this will hurt him. I assume he is telling them they should all speak, read, and write English?
csdeven on January 9, 2008 at 11:27 AM
So, not only is he the only ‘R’ with a history of suing gun manufacturers (legal product, American company) on behalf of the government to get his way, but is he the only ‘R’ who has a Spanish language ad? Is he requesting Spanish language ballots too?
ThackerAgency on January 9, 2008 at 11:28 AM

Hey! Where’s tommylotto? He ranked Rudy the highest/best on illegal immigration yesterday.
wccawa on January 9, 2008 at 11:29 AM
I don’t know. Maybe you can ask Fred Thompson’s campaign who liveblogged at least one debate in Spanish.
amerpundit on January 9, 2008 at 11:30 AM
I don’t give him a pass, but I’m realistic about the situation. People just weren’t as concerned about the border issue before 9/11. That just reality. I think there are 3 camps – the guys like Tancredo who are ill immigrant hawks, the guys like McCain who are the ill immigrant doves, and then the guys in the middle like Rudy and Mitt. The guys in the middle have staked out a position because of public sentiment probably, but it only really matters if they will do what they promise.
I think the complaint about Mitt hiring Ill Imm is pretty weak, even if sanctuary mansion is a catchy line – when you hire a company you hire a company – the whole point of subcontracting is so you don’t have to micromanage. That doesn’t bother me. Nor does Rudy’s only turned over the criminals in NY approach. I’m sure he thought he had much better uses of time and man-power. (Like visiting Ms. Regan for example). The real question is what will they do now.
Spirit of 1776 on January 9, 2008 at 11:30 AM
Mitt’s Spanish ad. The RNC has also run Spanish ads.
amerpundit on January 9, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Don’t forget, not all immigrants are soft on illegals. I’d even suspect there are more than a few groups out there that want the rule of law enforced just because it honors the ideals set forth in the constitution/bill of rights. If they did it right, why should others get a pass? What’s fair is fair.
csdeven on January 9, 2008 at 11:37 AM
As if he needed to… I think he already has that demographic sowed up. The last poll I saw in FL showed that Rudy pulled a respectable 21% of hispanics but a rather low 0% of blacks. What is “Leadership” in Ebonics

Smiles on January 9, 2008 at 11:43 AM
I don’t see any problem reaching out to the only reliably Republican and generally quite pro-American Hispanic group. I don’t think most Cubans are in any hurry to join La Raza even if they continue to use Spanish when talking amongst themselves. And Mel Martinez aside, many oppose amnesty.
phronesis on January 9, 2008 at 11:45 AM
Does Rudy know that illegals don’t get to vote? Oy. Tells me more about how he decides where to spend money…
Numenorean on January 9, 2008 at 11:46 AM
It would be a good ad if he added that he favors “English only” in the U.S. government and is serious about defending our southern border against the illegal alien invasion.
Fat chance!
ptolemy on January 9, 2008 at 11:47 AM
Well if Cubans only speak Spanish amongst themselves and English with everyone else then why do they need a ad in Spanish?….I mean other than pandering….I thought this was about unity one language etc.
EnochCain on January 9, 2008 at 11:48 AM
Not everyone speaking Spanish are here illegally. Most of his ads are in English, so that’s where he spends a lot of his money. However, you have to remember the major legal Cuban population in Florida, many of which, by the way, are Republican.
amerpundit on January 9, 2008 at 11:48 AM
Seriously, guys, he’s hardly the first Republican to run Spanish-language ads. Our own National Committee has.

well if you ruDy supporters really want him, and he wins the presidency (not likely at all), I am 100% certain that his presidency will be corrupt to the point that the pope will want to bestow sainthood on Bill Clinton.
ruDy knows how to use the government to bully people. He did it in NY, he’ll do it in DC. At least DC already has the gun ban that he wants in NY.
ThackerAgency on January 9, 2008 at 11:54 AM
I don’t like that we are in the situation where it makes sense for Rudy to run this ad, but it does. I’d guess that NYC mayors in the early half of the 20th century campaigned in many languages.
Really, the question about Rudy and illegal immigration is will Rudy enforce the laws? I believe he will.

I don’t subscribe to the compassionate conservative hog wash.
madmonkphotog on January 9, 2008 at 11:58 AM
Viva Rudy!! Well, maybe. This add does not support illegal immigration but it does some pandering.
Look, Rudy is not a great campaigner but he is best problem solver on either side of the ticket right now.
McCain will stick his finger in the eye of conservative Repubs just because he wants to and because he may not want a second term. And anyone who supported both the Z visa and McCain Feingold cannot have good judgment on domestic politics.
Mitt is a good, not great speaker, but Mitt has so many contradictions and he will be so vulnerable to flip flopping charge that he will have very little chance of energizing the base. And Mitt just cannot get personal. He is too much of a robot and too much of the CEO type.
Rudy’s problem with energizing the base falls to one item: abortion. And Rudy has not done a good job dealing with the issue, but on the facts he can by hitting hard at his policies on abortion issues. My biggest concern with Rudy is that he has too many W handlers in his campaign and they are not too smart and they are not trustworthy. Mike DuHaime has got to go. If Rudy wants to win he needs a new campaigner “strategerist” as Rush would say.
Thompson is good, but I just don’ think he is willing to do what is necessary to win; but I think he would make a good president.
Huckabee would be a train wreck. While it is possible for him to win, if he did he would kill the Republican party.
georgealbert on January 9, 2008 at 11:58 AM
¡Los inmigrantes legales a los Estados Unidos deben asimilar Rudy! Eso significa que necesitan hablar inglés. ¡Esto pandering!
Legal immigrants to the United States should assimilate Rudy! That means they need to speak English.

Oink on January 9, 2008 at 12:00 PM
I suppose it’s a bit of a pander. But he is trying to win an election, and maybe pick off a few Cubans taken aback when Mitt mistakenly quoted Fidel in Spainish or when Thompson started casting aspersions on them. An inconsequential pander that doesn’t commit him to some bad policy in the future is probably a neccessary evil from time to time if you want to actually win an election.

Hollowpoint on January 9, 2008 at 12:05 PM
My definition of “sanctuary city” is one where the local government actively thwarts the efforts of the INS. What Rudy did was realize that he had nearly a half million illegals in his city and the INS was only deporting a few thousand a year. Meanwhile, crime was running rampant in their community, most of which was being committed by their children running around unsupervised all day. Rudy dealt with this by telling the police not to question the citizenship of anyone reporting a crime and putting the illegals’ kids in school. Seems like a sensible plan to me if the INS can’t or won’t do their job.
Also, I don’t know if any of you remember, but Jeb Bush is married to a latina and their heartthrob son was all over Florida in 2000 talking about his tio George. (OK, I’m new here. How do you get a paragraph break in a response?)
Kafir on January 9, 2008 at 12:11 PM
Another indication of Rudis attitude toward illegal immigration, it’s not a problem to him, so his so-called solutions come off as half-hearted lip-service. The issue is only a problem to him, in the sense he has to explain(to people who support fairness&law)his record of a NYC ticker-tape greeting to anyone here violating our immigration law.
Rudi’s excuse of not being able to deport from NYC is taking the BS line that is the only solution, why not fine NYC(illegal)employers, fine NYC land(illegal)lords, instead he rolled out the red carpet right over our border. This kind of ad, makes it seem his plans include having the red carpet steam cleaned and widened, by illegals.
christophercube on January 9, 2008 at 12:12 PM
I didn’t say they were. To me this is blatant evidence that his priorities are not mine.
Numenorean on January 9, 2008 at 12:15 PM
It’s one ad. His top priority isn’t pandering to Spanish voters. As a matter of fact, I’ve seen three Rudy ads in English this morning. His number one priority is the war on terror.
I’ll eat crow if, by inauguration day, almost every candidate (including our nominee) end up running an ad or doing something Spanish-language oriented.
Again, the RNC runs ads in Spanish.

I’ve been thinking about what does Hilary’s victory imply about the Republican race? On another hotair thread reference was made to Kaus article with various theories about Hilary’s NH victory. Of those theories, I admit a strong bias towards the Feiler/Skurnik Effect–momentum has effect, but events in the last day or two matter considerably. (I doubt the other theories since I just don’t see any evidence of America’s secret racism and I doubt that the Hilary’s tearing up made much difference.)
If I’m right, then it seems to me that Giuliani has followed the right strategy so far. He’s avoided any damaged goods issues that may now plague the Romney campaign, but still has a good chance since momentum means less now. Voters in the upcoming states are willing to consider him.
I suppose in claiming that Romney is damaged goods means I do think there is a form of negative momentum. I suppose that would be in terms of donations drying up, but Romney’s campaign is self-financed as the Huckleberry always points out. As I write I become less clear what the hell I believe is going on, but no one else does either. Anyone have any ideas about the implications of why Hilary might have won NH to the Republican race?

Hispandering Alert:
Look at the “se pudo” in the Spanish text when Talking about how Rudy did it in NY, and can do it in DC. It’s the past tense of “Si, se puede“, which was the chant du guerre of the amnesty crowd. This is no coincidence.

She did better with elderly voters and Democrat loyalists, so the large turnout diluted the votes of the younger, democrat-leaning independants and hardcore activists.
Similarly, Ron Paul was also hurt by the large turnout- the high turnout meant that his small but fanatical group of supporters couldn’t swing things his way. Thankfully.

That’s just it. It’s not one ad with me, and I include the RNC in the comment about not sharing my priorities. It’s a bigger issue for me.
Will Rudy’s campaign be making ads in Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Farsi, French/Cajun dialects or any of the native American or Hawaiian tribal languages? Would he have gotten my grandfather’s vote if he does one in German?
I know he is not the only one guilty of pandering, and I’m very much aware they’ll all be running them in the end, but to me, seeing a candidate live out the conservative leadership principles I believe in is much more important than what language they say it in. While I am glad they are “reaching out,” that’s just not what it adds up to from here.
Numenorean on January 9, 2008 at 12:51 PM
Rudy would, IMO, be better than McCain or Huckster, which is sort of like saying influenza is better than typhoid or tuberculosis.
I’ve never been an issue voter on abortion in that no president is going to eliminate abortion in this country and to vote on that issue is pointless. The only chance of eliminating abortion is to elect a president who will appoint constitutionalist judges, especially to SCOTUS and see what happens.
I do care very much that we stop illegal immigration and implement policies which encourage self-deportation and use forced deportation as required. I also care very much that we defeat islamofascism and creeping sharia, the former he would pursue, the latter he would not. I also think it very important, seeing that neither of those are going to see much change any time soon, that our 2nd Amendment rights are upheld strenuously by any candidate.

Also, because I know little of Florida, is he running the risk of alienating anyone with this ad?
or are these just really stupid questions?
My apologies/gratitude in advance.
PolitiNOOB on January 9, 2008 at 1:02 PM
Well, I can scratch one Republican candidate off my list to support:
Rudy GuilianiFred Thompson
John McCain
Mike Huckabee
Mitt Romney
If all the other candidates are running these type of ads. Then they will lose my support as well. And I know not all people living here that don’t speak Spanish are here illegally, but that’s not the point. Assimilation is the point and the fact we don’t promote it anymore. Also, how we operate nowadays where everything in two languages and creating an even greater magnet for illegal immigration is the point. I guess we will never learn until we are so saturated with illegal immigrants unwilling to adapt and our willingness to appease the issue, that the social issues, problems and conflicts will be unavoidable and irreversible.
Maybe this is a good thing that Republicans pretend to look the other way, run ads and pander like the Democrats do. This way if the Dems win, they run this country into the ground by making the illegal problem expeditionally worse than it already is. By then, this may cause the Republicans to wake up and represent the citizens of this country in 2012.
Or maybe I’m just dreaming for something good to finally happen someday over this problem.

I really do not see why anyone would see this ad as a problem. Others (Mitt, RNC) have run similar ads, and yes, you can get a ballot in any language you want if you request it. In fact, the last election in Beverly Hills had an ordinary ballot (given to everyone) that was in English/Farsi. Multiple languages are a part of elections, deal with it. However, it does not have anything to do with policy. You can check the translation if you are monolingual like me. He doesn’t say anything controversial or even different from his English language ads. It is not directed at the typical illegal alien border crosser in CA, AZ or TX. The ad is only playing in FL and is obviously directed to legal Cuban voting citizens — who happen to be a loyal Republican constituency. Is it a pander to this constituency? Duh, Yes. That is what elections are for.
Rudy has made a commitment to secure the border and identify all aliens in the country. Rudy wants to implement a reliable and easy to use employer verification system so that a crack down on employers is possible and fair. Rudy is still a proponent of assimilation and learning to read and write English. In the 1980′s He had the guts to round up illegal Haitians and stick them into concentration camps. He has the guts to enforce our border. In fact, he is the only guy I trust. Certainly not Spencer Abraham lovin’, open borders votin’ Fred.

My Spanish teacher – who spoke English better than most Americans of European descent – used to say that if he really wanted to get to the heart of a matter, he spoke Spanish. No matter how well you learn a foreign language, you’re always going to be more comfortable speaking in and listening to your first language. Rudy made an ad that brings his message to an important Republican constituency in the most effective possible way. It’s not pandering, it’s just a good ad.

Seriously though, how is a biometric I.D. going to help stem the tide of illegals coming here over the border or via air mail, i.e. expired student, tourist, guest visas?
His plan is just another confirmation of his control freak, authoritarian tendencies.
I would gladly vote for Giuliani if he made a run against our schmuck of a governor, or gave it the old college try again, re: the U.S. Senate.
But as POTUS Giuliani is a non-starter.

How about Russell Harding?

He made so many horrible, cronyistic appointments in office that it makes Bush’s staffing of the federal bureaucracy look competent by comparison.

This “amnesty” argument is driving me crazy! I almost threw a brick at my TV during the debate when Thompson and Romney could not frame the debate as follows:
Amnesty is forgiveness for past misdeeds.
If you charge a fine or demand jail time, it is not amnesty.
However, the “no amnesty” proponents – McCain, Guliani, Huckabee – want to REWARD illegal aliens with what they stole – residency in this country. (Huck is tapdancing too fast to follow his apparent hardening on this issue.)
Imagine a burglar who has stolen $5000 of your favorite power tools and your wife’s jewelry. At trial the judge gives him amnesty – no jail time and no fine. BUT THE JUDGE WILL CERTAINLY NOT LET THE BURGLAR KEEP THE TOOLS AND JEWELS!
McCain, Guliani, Huckabee, Bush, Kennedy, et al, all want to give your jewelry and your husband’s power tools to the illegal aliens. Very simple. And outrageous.
Can you honesty say that these two scenarios are different?
1. An (about to be) illegal alien bribes a BP agent to get into our country – cost: $3000
2. An illegal alien is allowed to stay in country by paying a $3000 fine.
As Thompson (and Romney and Hunter) says, “Ya gotta go home!”

jerrytbg on January 9, 2008 at 4:18 PM
Amnesty is Congress, with the signature of the POTUS, allowing people who are in this country illegally to live here without first going back to their countries of origin in order to apply for a legal visa-with all of the penalties that process might entail. Whether they are fast-tracked to citizenship, a la Simpson-Mazoli or the McCain-Hagel-Kennedy fraud, is another matter altogether.
All of the major Republican candidates, with the exceptions of Thompson and Giuliani, are in favor of that.

The VISA needs to be re-addressed while the border is being, secured. Along with a verification system.
All these issues can be worked out, what we need not do is have people get overly emotional on these topics, then NONE of it will get solved.

I politely beg to differ. Do you remember Fred and Rudy arguing over and over about this?
Rudy – “Pay a fine, have to learn English, etc, etc.”
Fred – “Do they get to stay?”
Lather, rinse, repeat above exchange.
Rudy, McCain, Kennedy, Bush, Huckabee (a few weeks ago), all allow illegal aliens to keep the ill-gotten goods.
Thompson, Romney (now, at least) and Hunter do not propose to give the stolen goods to the thieves. Check the NumbersUSA candidate list.
Illegal immigration will NEVER cease, no matter how high you build a wall, unless we stop REWARDING illegal aliens with what they stole – presence in our country – and thereby encouraging more illegal behavior. It is as simple as that.
Ya gotta go home. Period.

My mistake.
That should have read “Thompson and Romney,” of course.
They’re all starting to morph into one unappealing borg I suppose.
None of them have adequate positions on immigration and securing the borders, with the exception of Duncan Hunter, and I don’t see him compiling more of those delegates any time soon. Unless Wyoming is planning on holding another primary.

Second look at rejecting Rudy?

12 to 20 million. You. Are. Dreaming.
Not with ICE, not with self-deportation. Your federal government literally told them if they get past the border they are home free. Your federal government looked the other way when they took over jobs and became an essential part of our economy. Your federal government requires hospitals to give them emergency medical care — far better than they receive at home. It is your federal government’s fault they are here. This is an impossible task — much like governing NYC. You have to tackle it with reason.
Deport the criminals — all of them
Secure the border — completely
Identify all aliens coming into the country with biometric ID — they can work
Establish mandatory reliable easy to use employer verification
That will stop the bleeding but leave us with the 12 to 20 million illegals already here (and its our Federal government’s fault) — Nevertheless, many are worthy contributors to our economy and country.
Offer the good ones a path forward — pay a fine (high enough that it is not considered amnesty), require them to hold a job and pay taxes for at least 5 years, know American history, and speak English — make it far tougher that McCain’s plan with its absurd Z-Visa — but give the ones really committed to staying here, assimilating and becoming productive tax paying citizens a chance to legitimize themselves.
Those that cannot or will not seize this opportunity? Deport them or force their self-deportation by preventing them from working. After you have biometric ID, mandatory employer verification, and an offer to legitimize the 12 to 20 million among us, then you can crack down on employers.
It is easy to say over and over again, “ya gotta go home.” It feels good and feels right but IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. The massive population wave allowed by your federal government is just too great. That Genie will not go back into its bottle. We have been dealt a bad hand. We need to cut ourselves the best deal possible — unless, of course, you want to be accused of genocide.

This ad is a boilerplate campaign ad, and it has nothing to do with illegal immigration. It’s just in Spanish and says Rudy cut taxes, created jobs, etc. when he was mayor.
I just love how the immigration hard-liners always assure us, “Oh no, we’re not racists, we love legal immigrants, in fact the reason we have to deport the illegals is because amnesty is so unfair to the people who want to come here legally.” I’ve always been a bit skeptical, but I don’t like to question peoples’ motives without good cause.
Then a candidate runs an ad asking for the votes of American citizens, who are not just legal immigrants but have every right the rest of us enjoy, including the freedom to speak Spanish, or Navajo, or Hebrew, or Hawaiian, or Swahili, or any other language they damn well please, and all these (alleged) lovers of legal immigration, these stalwart defenders of the constitution and the American way, who have never (they insist!) had a racist or bigoted thought toward a Latino in their lives… proceed to go utterly apeshit.

If you’re going to do a campaign ad in spanish, you *must wear a military uniform*
Preferably with loud colours and lots of decorations

The Continental Army didn’t fight for the right of future generations to speak Spanish, Senor Dumb-ass.
And who said that our policy of unfettered immigration is positive? Just because someone correctly identifies the primary problem, i.e. the porousness of our borders and the influx of illegal aliens, does’t mean that he or she can’t also critique our broken system of legal immigration, which is more generous than any other nation on the planet.
We aren’t as myopic as you open border clowns, trust me.

Don’t generalize. I have lots of like-thinking friends who are convinced that rewarding illegal entry into our country only encourages more of the same, while welcoming LEGAL immigrants from all countries. I have a customer from El Salvador who entered legally on a visa and spent lots of time (9 years) and lots of paperwork and fees getting his green card. He had to go through TSA hoops to take flight training – passport, photos, fingerprints, etc. He is also pissed that others who cheat get rewarded.
Why do so many think that rewarding bad behavior won’t encourage more of the same? Never trained a dog, I guess. The same applies to humans. The meter maids have you trained to put your nickle in the meter for fear of a ticket, don’t they? And if you were a patient foreigner waiting in line, wouldn’t you be pissed if your fellow countrymen who cheated obtained precious residency and possible citizenship by paying a $3000
finebribe after the fact?fred5678 on January 9, 2008 at 9:03 PM
It’s not MY nor YOUR government’s fault for the present sad situation; it is OUR government’s fault. Come, let us reason together:
You. Are. Insane. if you think repeating the same thing over and over again (SEVEN amnesties since 1986) will ever change the result: ever-increasing numbers of illegal border crosings.
Oh, but most emphatically, YES. New state laws in AZ, OK, and TN are causing illegals to flee those states, often BEFORE the laws went into effect. Check Outraged Patriots dotcom for LOTS of news stories, plus this post by our lovely and oh so intelligent host.
I agree. We have to stop doing this. NOW.
I agree – stop the rewards – completely. No residency, no earned legalization, no drivers licenses, no in-state tuition, nothing but emergency medical care on the way home. Anything more is a reward.
Sounds like Rudy’s sound bites. No, it won’t stop the bleeding; not without also STOPPING THE REWARDS. See ‘dog training’, previous post. Also see ‘SEVEN amnesties’, above. Also see ‘insane’, above.
By sending cash remittances to their home country, instead of recirculating the wages back into OUR economy, at over $20 B a year??
The ones avoiding taxes by accepting only cash (the IRS frowns on me doing this), using a stolen soc. sec. number (a felony), or a made up soc. sec. number (a $250,000 fine)?? Which method do the “good ones” use??
Legalized residency? The same residency he already stole? Granting residency to an illegal alien is the same as a judge giving the stolen jewels to the robber.
A one dollar fine makes it not an amnesty. It’s the REWARD of residency that’s the problem, not the $3000
finebribe.blah, blah, sound bite, blah. I am all for granting complete amnesty to every illegal alien – I don’t want them in jail, I don’t want them in court, I don’t want them to pay a
finebribe – I just want them to leave. And I want those not yet here to stay home and improve their own country – and that won’t happen if we entice them with the example of an EIGHTH repeat of “legalized earned residency.”See above for lots of examples of this working already at the state level.
It will be even greater using your proven, flawed strategy.
GENOCIDE?? AZ, OK, and TN are committing GENOCIDE?? Better get the ACLU on that. Stat.

This whole thread says a lot more about the people doing the criticizing than the person being criticized. Being for a sane and legal immigration policy is not the same as being zenophobic.
