Video: Jeri Thompson talks up Fred’s South Carolina stand
posted at 6:14 pm on January 9, 2008 by Bryan
Lots of standard campaign messaging here, but delivered smoothly and with style. The subtle dig on Mrs. Romney’s contribution to Planned Parenthood is well played indeed. There’s some steel in this magnolia. And does Heather Nauert almost call John McCain “McVain?”
Did Fred really never watch Law & Order until he heard from the show’s producers? He and I have that in common, because to this day I’ve never sat through more than half an episode, pre or post the advent of Fred.

You think so…his universal healthcare scheme is imploding…he admitted that he betrayed them by claiming a pro-life stance and then “Coming down on the side of life in every decision he made in office.”…MA voters wouldn’t be that dense again, would they?
ihasurnominashun on January 9, 2008 at 7:46 PM
Keerful. Ah’ll get mah packup trook and mah shahtgun (Ah call her Daisy Mae, she’s so purty) and chase you off lahk revenooers, BOY!
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 7:46 PM
But Fred is the clear conservative choice.
Just not for, you know, the areas that need it the most.
BKennedy on January 9, 2008 at 7:46 PM
They keep voting Kennedies in. Yes, they’re that dense.
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 7:47 PM
Yeah, there is that…and John Freakshow Kerry.
ihasurnominashun on January 9, 2008 at 7:48 PM
Ah. Logic defeats you, so you snark platitudes. You know Mitt will get the delegates, Giuliani would pick up slack, and Massechusetts would be a bust for Fred no matter how much time he spends there. Your attitude towards southerners really punctuates how pointless it would be. New Hampshire was much the same. McCain had the influence going in, and was set to take it, and he did. Romney picked up the slack. Where’s your rebuttal?
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 7:50 PM
Damn. She’s hot.
Agrippa2k on January 9, 2008 at 7:51 PM
And here I was this whole time thinking your handle referred to the Federalist Papers…
Tzetzes on January 9, 2008 at 7:51 PM
We have the minor problem than no one ever runs against them.
Mitt was the last, IIRC. And it would have been baaaaaad if he unseated Uncle Ted.
BKennedy on January 9, 2008 at 7:53 PM
No one serious anyway, and no Democrat has ever tried to knock their incumbencies away from them.
BKennedy on January 9, 2008 at 7:53 PM
Sharp guy! That could also be inferred correctly, as I do prefer a federalist system. Hence the Fredhead status.
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 7:56 PM
Jeri Thompson actually seems smarter than her husband. I think she should run for office. I’d be more inclined to vote for her over Fred.
Plus she’s hot. :)
popularpolitics on January 9, 2008 at 7:56 PM
I’ve never seen an episode of Law and Order—-ever.
But I remember how dissapointed I was when Fred announced that he was leaving the Senate. He was one of the few that I actually liked and trusted.
FloatingRock on January 9, 2008 at 7:57 PM
And you wonder why Fred might skip it. Can’t imagine why he’d turn down a chance to talk heating oil deals with Joe.

Hey I resemble that remark!

LOL! Good timing dufus. You’re obviously too stupid to realize you just made that statement on the same day that your own candidate Mitt Romney announced he would not be running any ads in Florida or South Carolina. Dumb a$$!
Guess Mitt only wants to be President of the East Coast, huh?
Yes Mitt, screw everyone south of New Hampshire, you idiotic arrogant yankee elitist.
What’s your point? Does anyone other than you, Mitt, and John McCain care about New Hampshire?
No, it wasn’t out of character for him at all. He’s always been an arrogant a$$ and the definition of east coast elitism.
No, you simply can’t stand southerners you creepy grandma’s basement-dwelling sock-puppet Romney troll.

BKennedy on January 9, 2008 at 8:01 PM
By jilting Delaware and everything north of the Mason Dixon line, how’s Fred going to do in this “brokered convention” scenario?
What are the delegates going to trade for?
Any bets?
A) the red truck
B) Fred’s Cuban cigars
C) Interview with Jeri
D) Fred’s house
E) Straight jacket for Fred

Jeri did quite well in this interview.
Fred! watches Sportscenter like the rest of us, that’s comforting.

Jeri Thompson for First Lady!
someguy on January 9, 2008 at 8:17 PM
I think Fred and Jeri’s chance would be appreciably higher if they would join hands and weep.
Captain America on January 9, 2008 at 8:22 PM
Oh, give them a break. There are parts of this country that supposedly call a water fountain a “bubbler” and call soda “pop”. Wisconsin’s supposed to be one of them, but I really haven’t noticed much.
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 8:23 PM
BKennedy and I have had our fair share of disagreements, but I agree with him on this premise. He was a little harsher than I might have been, but Fred should have been more available and visible in NH and he would have won. Same with Iowa.
But now they are about done anyway BK and this is really his ‘hail mary’ because he MUST win SC now. I think they are learning as they go.
It is POSSIBLE for him to win SC, get some money and get competitive in FL, but highly unlikely. If he doesn’t win SC, he’s done. It’s all in for him here now.
And by the way, I love Wisconsin too. The people there are great and the land is nice and they have yummy cheese! Go Packers!
ThackerAgency on January 9, 2008 at 8:23 PM
You really think so? I can’t believe that for the life of me. McCain won it before, and he did so now. Do you really think a few days would have put Fred in first?
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 8:25 PM
My personal chef is a Catholic from Wisconsin and he hooks me up! If it wasn’t for him I’d starve. But I eat like a king with his help. Actually the only time I’ve been in a Catholic Church was for his wedding. And I was pretty mad that they distinguished between Catholics and non-Catholics during communion. Everyone is welcome for communion in non-Catholic Christian churches. I was a bit shocked and a lot put off. . . so I didn’t even partake in communion.
But my chef is a great friend. He’s been cooking for me for about 5 years. . . just gave me another yummy batch of food in my fridge today. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
ThackerAgency on January 9, 2008 at 8:30 PM
A few days, no. But he started out on a bad foot announcing on Leno during the first NH debate. NH people are open minded, but they want to believe that you care about them. His skipping that debate put them off a LOT. But he had months to be there and meet the people. They say he spent ZERO time there. It was a big mis-step. He could have won NH if he had put in face time there and given his message. But more important than giving his message, he needed to give them the message in terms of how it would help the people of New Hampshire specifically – he’d have won in a landslide.
ThackerAgency on January 9, 2008 at 8:32 PM
I know what you mean. I was sent to the Catholic school across the street because my parents knew how much public school sucked. Only real thing I took away from it was that Catholics were hypocrites and I never wanted to be one. Probably didn’t help that I was both the only non-baptized kid in the school, and pretty much the only one without a trust fund.
Dude, you’ve got a personal chef? You could afford that Erin girl from MSNBC! Whaterface that Rush likes and is the biggest gold digger I’ve heard of.
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 8:34 PM
Did you notice how Hillary framed her health care in NH? She said, my work helped get 7,000 children of NEW HAMPSHIRE health care. My work helped ‘x’ number of military from NEW HAMPSHIRE medical care. That’s what works in NH. It’s sort of pandering, but it’s more telling the people how you will help them specifically.
ThackerAgency on January 9, 2008 at 8:36 PM
What? I think I’ll go read another blog.
jerrytbg on January 9, 2008 at 8:36 PM
I’ll definitely grant you that had he gone to the NH debate he would have had a better chance. However, you know that his whole campaign has been essentially about breaking the rules. Again, he’d still be dealing with reigning champion McCain when the time came along.
However, I still stand by the theory that given Fred’s circumstances as of last Friday, his best shot was to skip NH and go straight to SC, which he did. He’s being admonished for that by the same guy who claimed he was incompetent. Incompetence would be going to NH, in my opinion, when he would have gained more by going to SC and getting his support up.
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 8:40 PM
Don’t think you were being singled out. While Catholics may be allowed by other churches to partake in their Eucharist, our own Catholic Church forbids it.
The Catholic Church puts a lot of emphasis on the Eucharist being the literal body of Jesus and the wine being the literal blood of Jesus, not simply symbols of Jesus’ power of transubstatiation. Therefore, it is a sin for Catholics to partake of the Eucharist is churches where it is not blessed by a priest as the literal body and blood of Christ.
We have many sermons on the topic of how Jesus wasn’t kidding about the whole “this IS my body, this IS my blood” thing. Unlike Bill Clinton, Jesus knew what the meaning of is was.
BKennedy on January 9, 2008 at 8:41 PM
Yeah, and the first thing Fred would tell them would be that to fix Social Security, they have to suffer for a bit to make future projections for retirees economically feasible. Now, given that NH residents like to hear Hillary talk about how she got them government subsidized health care, how do you think that would have come across?
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 8:42 PM
How about the meaning of saw?
MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 8:43 PM
New Hampshire liberals want to hear about Hillary’s vast array of promises, New Hampshire conservatives and independents are rather tired of the lefty Massholes that moved in after they screwed up this state, and would rather the government just leave them alone altogether.
BKennedy on January 9, 2008 at 8:44 PM

TA,
With all due respect, who gives a rats a$$ about NH? Seriously. McCain won NH in 2k, how’d that turn out? He had the organization still in place up there and it would have been a huge waste of resources for Fred to go there with very little chance of any meaningful returns on the investment.
A personal chef from Wisconsin? So does everything come out with cheese and bacon? ;)
burnitup on January 9, 2008 at 8:50 PM
Errr … the definition of conservative in New Hampshire sorta blends with “liberal.”
There might be two or three real conservatives in New Hampshire.

How many ways can you fix cheese…and how many ways can you serve Point beer?
Oh, forgot about the fish fry’s…
right2bright on January 9, 2008 at 9:05 PM
ALL people of New Hampshire HATE taxes. Fred would have told them that he was going to fix social security so that they wouldn’t have to raise their taxes to fund it in 10 years.
It would have worked out so that he wouldn’t be hanging on to SC for dear life. If he had won in Iowa, which he could have with 30,000 caucusers, and won in NH which he could have with a staunch NO TAXES (federalist) rhetoric (or come close to winning) SC would be a given and he could have spent his resources elsewhere.
As it stands now, he has to waste time in SC which should be an easy win for him. And odds are he won’t win. That is why campaigning in NH wouldn’t be a waste. He’d be getting a lot more donations and he’d be the clear front runner.
You have to compete against the other candidates, not the other states. You want to beat the other candidates, you don’t want to necessarily ‘win the states’.

Well, come on now. Less than 120,000 people voted for Republicans in the caucus. He would have had to either get another 25% to get to first, or take a lot from Huck who obviously struck a chord that Fred wouldn’t have (the evangelical angle).

I want Jeri as First Lady. She has the style of a Jackie Kennedy, the wholesomeness of a Bess Truman, the charm of Betty Ford, and I think the resolve of Eleanor Roosevelt.
Quite the package.

Yes, I know the math will make your head explode. It’s OK. I know things are in Wisconsin.
wccawa on January 9, 2008 at 9:23 PM
Huckabee’s win proves that Thompson could have won. Fred is evangelical too. He could have used the same type of imagery in his commercials. He could have made the comments about Merry Christmas too. They didn’t vote for him because he was a minister, they voted for them because he championed the ideas that ‘evangelicals’ care about (which Thompson could have done as well).
It also wouldn’t have hurt to have gotten a Hollywood buddy to come out with him. While his message would have been the same, if he would have had a ‘famous person’ with him at his events, there would have been more buzz. Instead of a ‘lets go to a Thompson event’, it would have been ‘did you know Angelina Jolie is in town? Yeah she’s at the Thompson event’. That’s how he gets his message to more people who might not have otherwise known what he had to say.
The whole campaign was just poor from the beginning. As I said, they are ‘getting it’ now, but it’s probably too late. They MUST win SC, and then they MUST turn that into a WIN in FL. Otherwise, they are done. It didn’t have to come to this if they had played well earlier.

Well, I am a new person on here, but I can definitely tell the flood gates opened and some awfully smart-alecky, insensitive people came in.
“Clicker?” Who really cares? Is there an official name for it? Is there a north of the Mason-Dixon line name for it? Is there a NE United States name for it? FYI, my family calls it a “tat” because that’s what my daughter called it when she was a toddler. Does that date me or illustrate my intelligence or lack thereof?
And now that I can comment, I finally get to ask… for those who get on here and do NOTHING but slam others – the members here and the candidates they support – what are you doing? Do you just hang out here? Do you support someone? Why can’t this be a discussion of ideas and issues? Those of you who do that may be very smart. You might be geniuses for all I know, but you definitely do not give that impression. And you have the nerve to mock the accent of fine Americans yet have no comment on their words or message?
Oink on January 9, 2008 at 9:31 PM

MadisonConservative on January 9, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Uh, Thompson’s not evangelical. C’mon. He’s not Christian enough to be president, according to James Dobson and a fair number of other knuckleheads.
I was looking at a site that showed number of delegates for different states’ primaries, and there were lots of states where only one or two candidates were entered in the primary. I think Mitt was the only one who entered the IL primary , according to that site at least. Rudy wasn’t entered in quite a few of the small states, and neither was Fred. Is that normal?
funky chicken on January 9, 2008 at 10:07 PM
But it only works when we can tell the difference. Is that kind of like saying “I’m not laughing at you, I’m laughing with you?”

I’d just like to point out that, according to the Politico, Fred Thompson is in 3rd with 3 delegates so far.

All the sudden, the “South Carolina stand” makes perfect sense. Mitt has pulled his TV adds from SC and FL.

Well, once again, I just dropped a C-note into Fred’s gas tank. He and Duncan are the only two conservatives in the race. I wish they could get more positive attention in the media, but THAT would be very unlikely, since the majority of the media does not want a conservative elected. The liberal media would prefer a liberal dhiminicrat, but would accept a RINO.

Not only that, but if the Republicans run a stalwart conservative, the kind that makes people feel safe and that all will be right with the world, the Democrats aren’t going to be able to run as far left as the KOS types expect them to. The Reagan-Democrats won’t buy into it and will vote for the more familiar conservative candidate.
The more liberal the Republican nominees platform is, the deeper into socialism the Democrats can safely wade. It’s an issue of contrast. Change is good but too much change, especially uncertain change, can frighten people.

Back to the Fred as an ‘evangelical’ issue again. You say that Fred said he wouldn’t use ‘religion’ as an issue. The only reason Huck did so much was it gave him free press. The media couldn’t stop talking about it.
The reason he won is because he cared about the issues that ‘evangelicals’ (I still feel strange using that term because it is not descriptive) care about. It’s not about using religion in a campaign. It’s about understanding that ‘evangelicals’ care about ‘god (abortion), guns and gays (marriage)’. Focus on those issues in Iowa, be on their side, and you win the ‘evangelical’ vote.
Huck didn’t win because he was a minister, he won because the people of Iowa agreed with him on the social issues they cared about. Which, incidentally, are essentially identical to Thompson’s positions and why he came in 3rd without putting much time in there.
