Video: Influential Baptist Paul Pressler endorses … Fred!

Actually, he endorsed him a month ago but they’re rolling out the video today to counter the revival (pun intended) that Huck’s planning for South Carolina. Here’s the background on Pressler; read it or else you won’t grasp the significance of him bypassing Huck. Bob Novak wrote about a recent run-in between the two not long ago, in fact:
When Mike Huckabee went to Houston on Tuesday to raise funds for his fast-rising, money-starved presidential candidacy, a luncheon for the ordained Baptist minister was arranged by evangelical Christians. On hand was Judge Paul Pressler, a hero to Southern Baptist Convention reformers. But he was a nonpaying guest who supports Fred Thompson for president.
Huckabee greeted Pressler warmly. That contrasted with Huckabee’s anger two months ago when they encountered each other in California. The former governor of Arkansas took issue then with comments by Pressler, a former Texas appeals court judge, that Huckabee had been a slacker in the war against secularists within the Baptist church…
Pressler is known to be concerned that Huckabee plays to the establishment and would be subservient to the State Department and the New York Times.
On Oct. 26, John Fund of the Wall Street Journal quoted Pressler as saying: “I know of no conservative he appointed while he headed the Arkansas Baptist Convention.” The next week, during their California encounter, Huckabee confirmed reports from people who know him that his good-natured facade conceals thin-skinned irritability. The candidate jumped Pressler with bitter complaints.
Does Fred have enough money to get this on the air in SC, or is it part of his super-keen “Internet” strategy of campaigning?
Update (Bryan): Another fun fact that the Fred Heads can trot out: Arkansas Republicans didn’t endorse Huckabee either. Because, among other things, he campaigned for Democrats, helped them win, thereby screwing over the state’s GOP.
In 2003, Huckabee not only begged lawmakers for new taxes to make up a budget shortfall, but he rebuffed conservatives’ (Republicans and a couple of Democrats) plan to cover the shortfall by tapping one-time money and cutting pork. In 2004, President Bush won re-election, but Huckabee campaigned for some Democrats – even some who had Republican opponents – and Republicans lost state legislative seats for the first time since 1990.

I think we’ve all seen a bit of this now.
Fred should run a contrast ad with Pressler’s endorcement for him vs. T.Haggard’s endorsement for Huck. Surely Fred has enough $ to pay Haggard to make that endorsement;)

When a vistiting evangelist was at my church back in September, he flatly stated that “Fred Thompson is going to be our next President.”
He didn’t preface it with “Thus sayeth the Looooord” though, so your mileage may vary.
Go Fred!

Just released today is Fred’s policy paper on reducing government spending. I think there is no one else out with a plan this detailed! Hope Fred can start selling these.

RB, that’s his best video yet! I like the auto-play too. Doesn’t look like he’ll make the friends goal, but maybe that’ll surge after the debate in SC.
Just as an aside, in that video he had his forehead wrinkled the whole time – looked like a Klingon:)

I know we say this all the time, but honestly – this guy is a heartbeat away from the Republican candidacy? Really? Not to go all nut-rootsy, but – there are lots of things that can be said for Republicans who campaign for Democrats but “party leader” isn’t one of them.

True. Huckster can’t be trusted, and in this regard neither can Rudy- he campaigned for uber-liberal Mario Cuomo. Not that it matters anymore- Rudy’s ship is sinking fast.

broker1 on January 9, 2008 at 6:00 PM
Huck is not a conservative, but a liberal and the facts support it. It was noted that 75-80% of conservatives voted for Mitt in NH. and that 20% of those that called themselves liberals voted for Huck. If does not perform well in his own backyard of MI, I think he is toast, and he should drop out and support the only other real conservative in the race, Fred Thompson
ConservativePartyNow on January 9, 2008 at 6:02 PM
Why do you think the Huckster keeps proclaiming how he was able to get elected in a state that votes Democrat?

So we should just throw the rest out eh?

kerrhome on January 9, 2008 at 6:08 PM
Who?
eanax on January 9, 2008 at 6:10 PM
Fred has to convince the very evangelical Upstate of South Carolina (Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, etc) to vote for him instead of Huckabee. That’s a tall order, but if he does he has a shot. If he hammers Hucky on illegals it’ll help. He must do well in Lexington County (Columbia suburb county) and the suburb counties of Charlotte, NC that are in SC. I would be stunned if Mitt comes in 2nd in South Carolina simply because many view Mormonism as a cult. It’s gonna be Fred or Mike.
SouthernGent on January 9, 2008 at 6:12 PM
No, I read it (which is why I said thanks, as in thanks for point that out so I could read), but I wasn’t aware I was supposed to comment on each point, I just noted that one b/c I didn’t know that about him, kind of disappointed, kind of expected b/c of McCain.
I hope Fred drops that ARRA bit in the next debate. That’d be another Gitmo-like moment for Huck.
Spirit of 1776 on January 9, 2008 at 6:13 PM
Funny, never liked Huck, but the more I see him and learn about him, the worse he looks. I wish this stuff about supporting Democrats against Republicans had been out sooner. If only his supporters will wake up (assuming they care). Fred needs to get facts like these up in lights ASAP. He’s not as bad as I thought he was…he’s worse.
Hang in there Fred…sending you some more coin now!

Fred Thompson was in the senate for 12 years? That’s not what Wikipedia says.
But if a sixth generation Texan says, it must be true…

All the NE elites think that Romney or McCain or Rudy can stop Huck.
They’re all wrong.
The ONLY one who can stop Huck is Fred. Ya’ll make the mistake of assuming that because a southerner talks in an aw shucks manner with a smile on his face that he’s ‘nice’ or soft or stupid. Don’t be fooled. Huck is not an ‘amiable fool’. Folks in the South are just better at keepin’ a smile on their face and not lettin’ ya know what they’re REALLY thinkin’.
Underestimate Huck at yer own peril. You don’t want Huck? You’d best git behind Fred before it’s too late. (Learn the lesson of underestimatin’ GWB.)

This is big news about Pressler. I am a Southern Baptist and remember my Pastor telling me of the struggles he and others went through to keep the liberals from taking over the SBC. When the Baptist Pastors get hold of this, their congregation will quit salivating and stop looking love sick over Huckabooboo shockazooloo. This of course, will require Fred (I’m to proud to back down) Thompson to make ammends with Dr. Dobson. Doubt it all you want, but Dobson is a huge influece to evangelicals, me included.
Huck is romancing the evangelicals and homeschoolers in NC like you wouldn’t believe. He will take NC by 60% or more if he isn’t stopped.
livermush on January 9, 2008 at 6:59 PM
Don’t look for Fred to attack Huck directly, a la Mitt/McCain/Rudy/Huck – remember, he is the true conservative in the pack, and he does hew to the Reagan maxim of not directly speaking ill of another Republican.
And these things will come out. Fred doesn’t need to waste his air time or his ink repeating them.
One thing that is apparent through all of the coverage of Fred since he started this journey. While he’s been the most upfront in publishing his positions and ideas – there’s been virtually no coverage of this, and certainly no one has appeared to (publicly, anyway) engage his positions on their merit. And as such, Almost all of the Fred coverage has amounted to speculation and second guessing about his immediate tactical game, or development of the “lazy” meme/narrative.
The logs are loaded in the fireplace – South Carolina provides a match…even a spark – there’s gonna be a bonfire.

You may not like him but if you’ve paid any attention to the race thus far, you will understand that your statement is completely backward.
The more people see and hear Huck, the better he will do. The people that don’t like him are the ones that read Hotair, NRO’s The Corner, The Weekly Standard, etc. In other words, people that can’t think and research.

Sorry, you are wrong. Those of us that post on these sites are the ones that do research before we back a candidate. I have researched every GOP candidate and since I know some of the people who have posted on this thread, I can tell you for them that they have done their research.
Our research revealed the truth about Huck and that is the fact that he is a prolife liberal and his redefinition of conservatism will be liberalism, but he will still be prolife.
The majority of the people supporting Huck are Evangelicals who think because he use to be a minister that he is automatically a good guy. Too bad that isn’t true.
The people who aren’t political junkies need to learn to do the research instead of believing pithy soundbites.

No problem, we all have our off days..plus sarcasm doesn’t always translate well on a forum..But looking at what this guy posted, I almost suspect he works for somebody other that Huck…if not, he’s done far more damage for his candidate that anybody else could have. Seriously, he’s crying about bad coverage from the very best conservative political minds in the country. Get it?
AUINSC on January 9, 2008 at 9:13 PM
Huckabee is a populist and has no conservative principles. He took speaking fees recently while on the campaign trail and also took fees from a pro embryonic stem cell research group. Strong moral values indeed.
I tell you what, my friends and family wouldn’t vote for Huckabee if he was the only candidate running. We are conservatives in every respect, in fact my father is a UM minister. I and many I know in the conservative community will stay home if he is the nominee. It’s just that simple. If I want to vote for liberals, I’ll vote for a Democrat.

Huck is a misfortune that has befallen this country: a lying scheming populist who will use his faith to split the Republican Party among partial Conservatives of various stripes. The most gullible among the Evangelicals will fall for him, perhaps giving him the nomination. He will then revert to his high-tax, pro-illegal, ignorant on foreign policy profile trying to out-pander Hillobama thus making the choice between the Republicans and Democrats in the general election almost academic.
Igor R. on January 9, 2008 at 10:19 PM
Visualize the Huckabee administration: what will it accomplish for America? Are you highly concerned about preventive health care on the Federal level? Is an anti-abortion amendment an all-consuming theme for you? Are you excited about an ignorant provincial governor attempting to confront the Islamic threat, China, and Russia? Do you want to bet the sanctity of this country’s borders on Huckabee not flipping one more time? Do you trust the guy who increased taxes like that was his goal in life and is now obfuscating his record to actually lower Federal taxes? Do you really believe he has any chance to pass the FairTax? Do you really want the FairTax?
But yeah, he is pretty quick with a little wink and a joke, and man is he good with a guitar! I give you the President of the United States, panderer and illegal child educator in chief Mike Huckabee!

I see your point. People who don’t agree with you are obviously not thinking independently. So we need to quit thinking for ourselves, because then we’ll be thinking independently.
I wonder how many people have been persuaded by this “logic.”
I also wonder if this level of reasoning is typical of Huckabee supporters. Might explain a few things. Like being Huckabee supporters.

common sensineer on January 9, 2008 at 11:07 PM
I try to be tolerant of such people. It’s those who can’t tell the difference between a conservative and a liberal that kind of bother me.

91Veteran on January 10, 2008 at 1:29 AM
Okay. But I was speaking of Huckabee, Clinton, and Carter, who ARE.
Do you consider not being Southern Baptist relevant to why you’re for Giuliani?
Anyway, my point is just that Huckabee, Clinton, and Carter claiming to be Southern Baptist means that claiming to be a Baptist is less significant than it used to be. Which I think is still true, whether you’re Southern Baptist, Northern Baptist, Missionary Baptist, etc.
