McCain 18, Huck 15, Mitt 14, Rudy 12 — in California

posted at 8:45 pm on January 9, 2008 by Allahpundit

I’m thinking maybe we suspend our political coverage for a few weeks. Cold turkey, no looking back. I just can’t handle the depression anymore.

Is Huck going to take LA?

The private poll, which we just obtained from a leading Democratic state strategist, goes like this:

On the Republican side, Arizona Sen. John McCain leads the California pack with 18 percentage points; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee now in second place with 15, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has sunk to third place with 14. Here’s the shocker: former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani — once the frontrunner here — shows up with 12 percentage points, with Fred Thompson, the former Tennesee Senator, back in single digits with 9 points, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul in 5 percent. Undecided GOP voters are a huge number — 24 percent.

“I’ve never seen anything like this” so close to a major election, said the strategist. “This is a fight to the finish…it tells me that not only is the Republican field extremely unsettled, but many Republicans find this entire crop of candidates unsettling.”

The good news: Nonpartisan polls show Rudy with an eight-point lead. The bad news: That data is three weeks old, before Iowa and New Hampshire and Giuliani’s national cratering. And Huck was already running second at the time. This result isn’t far-fetched, in other words.

Which brings us to our latest HA poll. I’d hoped it wouldn’t come to this, my friends, but I fear we must prepare ourselves for the worst. All the policy papers — and money — in the world have been ineffective thus far against this date with destiny. I ask nothing more than that you choose as you would on Super Tuesday, knowing that Hillary or the Messiah awaits. Below the poll you’ll find a pearl of wisdom from Charles Krauthammer for inspiration.

The New Hampshire GOP polls were perfectly sound, boys. Hate to break the denial bubble here but the fact remains.

Given the choice between the two of them I choose The Grinch.

Seeing as the Grinch is not in the running, McCain is infinitely superior to Huckabee in that he isn’t a religious demagogue complete with no head for foreign policy.

You would be INSANE to vote McCain over Huckabee. If you don’t know why, I don’t know what to do with you. I’ve laid out McCain back at the blog, to remind you.

As far as Huckabee goes. He is pro-life and pro-gun. There was a time when we would have given our right arms for someone like that. Now you’re complaining about economic crap? If he’s right on life, guns, and (because of that), judges, stop the bellyaching already!

If he’s the candidate, he’s got my vote. To me life, and guns trump the other issues. Taxes and regulation come and go, but life and self-defense mean more to me

Rudy is a much worse choice for the GOP than the Mac on all sorts of issues, so are the Paulian and Huck. Plus Mac stands a much better chance than Romney in the general. After Thompson, he would be my second choice. All the poison and sneering is getting a bit much – he deserves better than the jeering he’s been getting around here.

Let’s leave the bitching and infighting to the Democrats.

I actually choose McCain rather than “stay home.” But that should be interpreted more as an anti-Huckabee vote (I would vote to castrate myself before I’d vote for him) as opposed to a pro McCain vote.

bert169 on January 9, 2008 at 9:00 PM

McCain is no conservative.

1) He opposes freedom of speech/expression (McCain-Feingold).

2) He voted against the Bush tax cuts.

3) He sposored and supported the scamnesty bill.

4) He apparently has thrown in his lot with the enviro-kook crowd.

I could grudgingly vote for McCain in the general, though I still hope Rudy or Mitt pull it out. McCain is better on the war than any Democrat and talks a good game on reducing government spending, although that is where his appeal ends. I could never vote for Huck. But one private poll from a democratic strategist is not sufficient evidence to declare Rudy dead in California.

Huckabee/Thompson 08?
Fred is low key enough not to outshine Huckabee. Which I’ve heard is important when selecting a vice president. And Thompson would get a lot of conservatives who have said that they would stay home. He shores up mikes weak points with conservatives, and hopefully would work in the background like Cheney would. But lets hope it won’t come to this.

Man, as a Rudy fan this is getting frustrating. I wish I knew what they have planned for Florida. It better be worth the wait! I’m trying to be patient, but if he took Iowa and NH serious I think he could of had a chance to at least win 2nd. John Fing McCain and Huck are so weak and Rudy could of used Mitt’s flip flops to win some voters over. Does anyone know if Rudy is going to stay in Florida for the next 3 weeks or is he gonna make a lame appearance in the states before Florida. If he’s putting on his chips in the states starting with Florida, he might as well stay in FL 24/7 the next 3 weeks instead of wasting time in states he’s not serious about anyways.

Look guys, when the data is bad, the data is bad. If some of the data happens to be close to actual in one area only, that’s called luck, not a valid scientific result. It’s pure chance.

The Polls are off for lots of potential reasons. The methodology no longer fits the way we live. Telephone polls don’t work when people have caller ID, call blocking and cell phones. They don’t work when pollsters start screening out voters too quickly simply because they aren’t “regular” voters (as Dick Morris suggested tonight). They don’t work when people intentionally mislead. They don’t work when the people reimplementing them intentionally or unintentionally bias the samples as happened during the exit polling of 04.

The real problem however is much more insidious and that’s the unwillingness or inability to look at the raw data and sanity test it. People want to believe. They want certainty and the accept anything that looks and sounds certain.

TheBigOldDog on January 9, 2008 at 9:23 PM

John McCain was the leader on the other side of the aisle. John McCain was the guy who was working with Ted Kennedy to drive it down our throats, and lectured us repeatedly about how xenophobic we were, lectured us, us being the Republican conference, about how wrong we were on this, how we were on the wrong side of history, and that you know, this is important for his…because having come from Arizona, knowing the strength of the Hispanic community, that we were going to be seen as racists, and he wasn’t going be part of that, that he was not a racist, and that if we were for tougher borders, it was a racist thing.

Look, John McCain looks at things through the eyes, on these kind of domestic policy issues, looks at it through the eyes of the New York Times editorial board, and accepts that predisposition that if you are not, if you stand for conservative principles, there’s some genetic defect.

Those poll numbers out of Cali are still raw- there’s still Michigan, SC, Nevada, and Florida to be contested before we get there on Super Tuesday. I’ll wait and see how these contests shake out and what effect they have on the field before I start pressing the panic button.

As for this Hot Air poll, like I said in a previous post, the only way I vote for Juan is if forced into my default “Anybody But The Democrat” mode. Well, Huck’s a Democrat and he’s got the record to prove it. So in this scenario, I’ll hold my nose and vote for Juan. Way I see it, Juan only cozies up to the Kennedys. Huck could be a Kennedy.

SuperCool on January 9, 2008 at 9:31 PM

You’ll need the guns with all the roaming criminals Jesus tells Huckabee to let free, and all the roaming Islamists enjoying his love thy enemy foreign policy.

I heard Huck denied 90% of clemency or pardon requests that came to his desk. And that he had thousands compared to Romney’s 100. If you think pardons or clemencies should NEVER be granted, then that’s one thing. But to act like Huckabee granted an exceptional number of arbitrary clemencies & pardons is something else – disingenuous in fact.

And Huckabee never said to love enemy nations; only that humility as opposed to arrogance is preferable.

And to defend your property against Huck’s big government spending.

The first Governor of Ark. to sign a broad based tax cut, and Government spending was actually not very high considering the road revamps and education court orders.

McCain has campaigned endlessly against Pork Barrel spending of the kind Huck loves, and has one of the strongest pro-life records in the Senate.

Probably correct, but most people have already picked their favorite guy and are just trying now to decide how much they are willing to give up in order to remain loyal to the party, if they really, really detest the winner. Most of us don’t want to make a decision in the voting booth, so try to work out the hard stuff ahead of time. I’d rather have Fred, but if I can’t have him, I can cheerfully go with Mitt or Rudy. After that I’m not cheerful anymore. Want to get the heartburn out of the way early.

McCain is far superior to the Huckster. I don’t think either will be the nominee. McCain would actually be a great Sec Def. Romney would be a great Sec Treasury. McCain would have been a better choice in 2000 on the issues that have caused the GOP huge problems the last few years, namely pork and insufficient active duty size for the military. He’s equally as bad as Bush on immigration, and is equally as comfortable cozying up to Ted Kennedy, so that’s a wash.

McCain would have vetoed many of the pork-laden bills that Trent Lott and Denny Hastert shoveled over and got signed by Bush.

No not Bolton, but Sigmund Freud as he could keep either of them heavily medicated.

MB4 on January 9, 2008 at 9:42 PM

if it comes down to those two, I’d vote McCain over Huck.

But I sure hope it doesn’t come down to those two.

Hitler’s doctor, Theodor Morell, kept him heavily medicated and hopped up on meth…maybe that would work? Not to compare our next 4 years to Nazi Germany, but it would definitely make “Meet the Press” interesting.

I hear Huck campaigned for some Democrats over Republicans in state elections while governor. Is that why the Arkansas Republican Party didn’t endorse him? Is he considered a loyal Republican down there?

Yep, he is actually. Read this.

popularpolitics on January 9, 2008 at 9:45 PM

We should just call this the “The Gary Gilmore election” as we appear to have only the choice of being shot [McVain] or being hung [Huckster].

MB4 on January 9, 2008 at 9:48 PM

Your Jewish Master, how can you like this guy, the basis of his whole candidacy is that he the real ‘Christian’ candidate. I can see people supporting Huckabee, if they’re…Christian.

God, he’s fooling everybody. I’m not even sure he’s a Christian to be honest about it. Now, this just may be me, but I’ve never met a pastor who wanted to be President…And, god love em, I’ve never met a pastor who I wanted to be President.
That’s a very important thing to take note of here. This guy is ‘different’, no matter which way you slice it…and by ‘different’, I mean ‘off’. Some goofballs may vote for him because they think it’s a good idea to have to a local preacher be President, but that would be so far out of the American experience of the last 219 years as to be outrageous. The founding fathers would be turning over in their graves over this, with good reason.
Plus, this guy is so all-over-the-map about what he says from one day to the next, that I think he makes McCain look stable. I think the MSM wants him to be the Republican nominee because they know how badly he’ll lose. And if he doesn’t lose, his past performance and Governor of AK would be the next best thing for them.

Thank you Pax Americana.

Your Jewish Master, your right, we will need all the guns in the world when the Huskter activates his Fair Tax plan. Since you don’t know the difference, I’ll tell you instead of paying your taxes on gross income we’ll all pay through commodities like bread. So when your loaf of bread costs you 10 bucks you’ll need that Uzi of yours to protect everything you own so you won’t get robbed yourself.

When someone’s economic plans are to the left of Billy Jeff you really have to think, is this guy I want to win the office of the presidency. Like some of posters stated above, I rather have a Dem in the WH rather then the Huskter. So when the country gets messed up we can all blame the Dems rather the Republicans.

Wasn’t Sigmund Freud addicted to cocaine?

I bet one McCain supporter voted over a hundred times in that poll. Who the hell would vote for either of those guys?

You didn’t build a Year 2000 bunker, did you? ;)

McCain > Huck

At least McCain gets it right on the war and defense, unlike the “give the world a hug” attitude I’m worried Huck would bring.

It’s always the lesser of two evils…

brak on January 9, 2008 at 9:55 PM

I’m actually not terribly surprised by the 15% for Huckster. CA is full of people who would stand up and cheer to hear a candidate talk about a nationwide ban on smoking and trans fats. The Rick Warren endorsement will get him some votes too, unfortunately.

funky chicken on January 9, 2008 at 9:58 PM

Huckabee is a liberal Southern Baptist. It’s the super conservative Southern Baptists who are strong backers of Israel. The liberal ones are no better than liberal Methodists or Presbyterians from what I’ve seen.

Jeb Bush, we need you.

That sounds like a good plan, except I would substitute heroine for meth. I think that McVain may already be on meth.

MB4 on January 9, 2008 at 10:03 PM

I also believe that California has a blanket primary, so this poll might underestimate the vote for McCain and Huckabee since they both appeal to independents and moderates.

Only registered Republicans can vote for a Republican presidential nominee in Cali, but independents can vote for Dems.

I’ll take McCain anyday, Huck’s foreign policy is frightening.
