Granite fault lines Update: Tears of a Clinton

Well, it’ll be entertaining watching pundits and pollsters do backflips trying to explain what happened in New Hampshire last night. Allah already linked to Kaus’ four theories. Kaus links to Mark Halperin, who has a whole bunch of theories up. Head over to Memeorandum and you’ll see a whole lot more theories. There will be no shortage of theories over the next couple of days, at least until the South Carolina GOP debate. Which is tomorrow.

As for me, I guess I need to recalibrate my Clinton Reactor. I never buy their act, never have, and even remember having a visceral reaction to Bill Clinton the first time I saw him on TV. He struck me as a cross between a snake oil salesman and a class president wannabe at the time, and over the years my opinion of him only went south from there. But clearly, there’s a huge chunk of the country that doesn’t see him that way and when he bites his lip, their hearts bleed.

Expect to see more of that lip-biting, emoting stuff. He has already deployed emoting since the win in New Hampshire. Heck, this time around the emotion might even be real. There I go again.

bill-emotional.png

Maguire says the press will go into self-recrimination mode now since it got New Hampshire so wrong, and what this means in practical terms is much more skeptical coverage of Obama. Well, the pendulum was due for a swing in that direction after the press drooled all over the Messiah, and the New Hampshire results are as good a reason as any for the press to generate a little skepticism.

Update: I got a request to add this infamous clip of Bill Clinton fake crying at Ron Brown’s funeral. Rush’s play-by-play on it is priceless, and paired up with the clip above, well, let’s just say that Clinton’s emoting turns my heart right back into stone.

Blowback

I’m telling you all, it’s ROVE!

oh, and my first First.

NoFanofLibs on January 9, 2008 at 9:24 AM

Bill’s got that act down pat and his cult following of mindless dolts eat it up every time. Everything about the Clintons is phony, always will be.

Hillary won. Oh yeah baby.

See ya in the general election.

fogw on January 9, 2008 at 9:28 AM

That man makes me feel ill every time I see him. I don’t believe anything he or his wife do is authentic.

Eclectic on January 9, 2008 at 9:29 AM

Ace made comment that all the warning signs were there and nobody paid attention or took them seriously. Some polls showed her ahead and others were a statistical dead-heat. She won 40% to Obama’s 36%. A actual separation of 4 points falls in the reasonable range.

The real question is why the MSM didn’t play NH for the facts verses calling an early defeat for Clinton.

natesnake on January 9, 2008 at 9:29 AM

Hillary has to win…fresh intern meat for Bill.

right2bright on January 9, 2008 at 9:35 AM

While the thought of Clinton losing again certainly was exciting, I’m glad to see she won. Debating her in the general will be a treat to watch.

fourstringfuror on January 9, 2008 at 9:35 AM

right2bright on January 9, 2008 at 9:35 AM

That explains the tears. They were tears of happiness, from visions of disrobing interns in his head.

fogw on January 9, 2008 at 9:38 AM

Come on, New Hampshire residents are a bunch of contrarian cranks.
I don’t think this is an indication of anything.

Your Jewish Master on January 9, 2008 at 9:38 AM

He struck me as a cross between a snake oil salesman and a class president wannabe at the time, and over the years my opinion of him only went south from there.

You know, that’s exactle the feeling I got when I first saw Kerry in 2004, before I was even a serious Republican or conservative. I saw him making loads of promises to college students, and knew he had already promised sunshine and good health to senior citizens. He struck me as a complete phony who would sell you anything to get elected.

BKennedy on January 9, 2008 at 9:38 AM

Amazing their followers still fall for the biting-lip, teary-eyed act. But, I gotta say, I am glad she’s still alive in this and hope she gets the nomination. The rest of the country is sick of this family.

fourstringfuror on January 9, 2008 at 9:35 AM

Yes, the problem is that her team is so experienced at setting up these debates that she will always have the upper hand, regarding content, questions, positioning, time, etc. She will have a huge advantage even before the debates begin, and the content will be aimed at her strength…or there will be no debates. Do you think Fox will host a debate?

right2bright on January 9, 2008 at 9:41 AM

It is amazing how people’s emotions and ideas swing at the outcome of one primary vote. If you look at New Hampshire. They are a bunch of psycho liberals. What they say it does not matter and in no way reflects the opinion of the American population. Obama will win the Democratic nomination, if for only one reason, he is not Hillary Clinton. There have been too many Democrats that have jumped off of the Clinton ship. The only chance that the Republicans have is if Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney run against Obama. And even then, that chance is slim.

The media have been pounding their message into the American populace for eight years, it will be a tall order to overcome that.

TheSitRep on January 9, 2008 at 9:43 AM

You have to remember this, when the Republican candidate takes on his Democrat opponent, he is not only fighting his opponent, but also every major news outlet, including Fox news.

TheSitRep on January 9, 2008 at 9:45 AM

Man, the Clintons continue to lower the bar for Political discourse.
From todays Upper Valley Spectator,

On the Campaign trail….
…..a top Clinton political operative was seen holding court at a local eaterie here in Hanover this weekend. While entertaining a tableful of young HRC volunteers, he was overheard responding to criticism that the Hillary Campaign was recycling political retreads like Carville and Begala in an effort to revive her sagging poll numbers. He stated that he understood that the Obama Campaign was also shuffling staff and that they were bringing in Johnny Sheffield to be one of his handlers……

there it is on January 9, 2008 at 9:46 AM

Yes, the problem is that her team is so experienced at setting up these debates that she will always have the upper hand …

Stay tuned to find out who the Clintonistas inject into the race as a third party candidate. Another Perot is a necessary ingredient for any chance of winning. Hill can’t win alone with 42% of the votes.

fogw on January 9, 2008 at 9:48 AM

The thing is the polls were pretty much right when it came to the republicans. Most showed McCain by 4 or 5pts. But who knows now.

Complete7 on January 9, 2008 at 9:49 AM

It’s better for the “R’s” that she won so the attacks against Obama will contunue and get nastier. We need an all out war on their side. Obama needs to be tarnished and she is…well way beyond being likable.

As for Bill getting teary eyed, aside from him being a 100% phony, I seriously wonder if he would be happy or disappointed about her winning. As much as he wants to think the country bows to him and he can pull her through, his ego might not let him be number “2″ to her. Interesting situation for an egomaniac like him.

Good point…Hmmm, who would that be?
However, if it is Huck or Romney, they won’t need to do that.

right2bright on January 9, 2008 at 9:58 AM

Stocks are rising today on the news of Hillary’s victory!

fogw on January 9, 2008 at 9:48 AM

I have no doubt Clintons would finance a third-party candidate. But who can you suggest who would run for them, and also be popular enough to siphon off enough votes for Hillary to win? (I’m thinking Ron Paul’s base has as many lefties and it does libertarians who might otherwise vote GOP.)

petefrt on January 9, 2008 at 10:05 AM

I’m surprised the geriatric bunch was able to stay awake past 8 PM.

madmonkphotog on January 9, 2008 at 10:05 AM

No doubt Bill is celebrating with an Intern-ally glazed cigar…

I think there’s a lot of merit to what Rush was saying. Hillary needs to “fight” for the nomination instead of just being coronated so that she will be “battle tested” once the convention is over. Look for this “battle tested” storyline to begin real soon now.

No, that has to be because of Mitt’s second place finish.

I wish you hadn’t said that. Now I’m crying too.

ronsfi on January 9, 2008 at 10:15 AM

Huckabee, lovechild of the Clenis and Tami Faye?

ronsfi on January 9, 2008 at 10:17 AM

They will cry their way all the way back to the White House if Obama lets them.

Valiant on January 9, 2008 at 10:19 AM

No, that has to be because of Mitt’s second place finish.

Bryan on January 9, 2008 at 10:13 AM

I’m certain it was because of Huck’s defeat.

Self-recrimination mode? I didn’t know the press could do that! I expect a lot of ‘Well, I thought…”

Spirit of 1776 on January 9, 2008 at 10:28 AM

The real story here is the fall of Chris Dodd.

petefrt on January 9, 2008 at 10:05 AM

Ted Kennedy could probably talk his pal McCain into being the spoiler for the GOP, if McCain peters out in the next few primaries. McCain could run as the Maverick Party candidate. Problem is, he might draw away votes from Hill as well. The Dems love a Republican who defies his own party.

Then there’s Hagel too. He likes shooting his mouth off to get in the limelight.

fogw on January 9, 2008 at 10:33 AM

I’m telling you all, it’s ROVE!

Don’t laugh, dude. Some moonbat showed up on my blog and said exactly that!

OK, I take it back…go ahead and laugh. I know I did.

crushliberalism on January 9, 2008 at 10:42 AM

Then there’s Hagel too.
fogw on January 9, 2008 at 10:33 AM

That’s who comes to mind.

I’ve had it with McCain, but still I think if he runs third party, it’ll be his own decision, without much influence from camp Clinton.

Your point’s a good one. If Clintons see mileage in supporting the third-party sub rosa, they surely will.

petefrt on January 9, 2008 at 10:43 AM

Why is Bill not with his, um, wife on such an important night? Has anyone actually seen those two together, ever? They probably got married over the phone.

amkun on January 9, 2008 at 10:46 AM

Every time I see Clinton biting his lip or crying, I keep thinking of the time he was caught, on tape, laughing at that funeral. He saw the camera and went right to biting his lip and looking like a kicked puppy. Hillary has taken notes from him on trying to trick the masses into believing they actually give a rat’s ass.

Torch on January 9, 2008 at 11:06 AM

even remember having a visceral reaction to Bill Clinton the first time I saw him on TV.

A Howard Dean moment. “I feel your pain” did it for me. Like the town shyster just bought the used car lot.

Feedie on January 9, 2008 at 11:35 AM

You know what we will never see in this election? B&H Clinton sharing the stage with a beautiful woman. All it would take is one head turn and the photo-op would be plastered all over the Net. And her campaign would be distracted and overshadowed. See how many times Mad Albright is pictured with them at campaign stops; she’s safe. All you Wilford Brimley types who think Maddy is a hot patootie please forgive me.

Doug on January 9, 2008 at 11:47 AM

Brilliant! Now if she slips and lands on her knees…

Feedie on January 9, 2008 at 11:58 AM

Clinton’s tears could remove the chrome off a bumper.

realitycheck on January 9, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Bill and Hill, two examples of strong leadership………They cry ALOT, courage!

ThePrez on January 9, 2008 at 1:44 PM

Any tear Bubba Billy sheds should be viewed with a jaundiced eye.

pilamaye on January 9, 2008 at 1:49 PM

Man, I sure miss Rush on TV!

Afterimage on January 9, 2008 at 3:23 PM

It depends on what the meaning of the word “tears” is. If the –if he – if “tears” means is and never has been, that is not— that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement.
