Open thread: Primary results; Update: Silky staying in?

I don’t know when the exit polls are going to be released but the fact that CNN is starting to release stuff like this makes me think “soon.”
Something to ponder while we wait: Would an enormous Obama blowout on the Democratic side change your GOP primary vote at all? The bigger his victory, the more one has to start planning for him in the general. McCain and Huck match up reasonably well (although not all that well). Mitt, I think, less so.
Update: Fox News says 59% of independents are breaking towards Democrats, which means a big win for Obama. He’s leading Hillary 44-30 among them. Among independents voting Republican, McCain leads 37-26.
Evangelicals make up only 21% of the vote.
Update: More exit-poll mania from CNN. 18% of Dems and 15% of Republicans decide at the last minute. More good news for Obama, probably.
Update: Here’s Politico’s vote-count page. They did a crappy job with Iowa. Hopefully they’ve worked out the kinks.
Update: Is campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle the first woman overboard on the USS Clinton?
Update: The Politico page up above is showing very, very early results, although I don’t think we get any official tallies until 8 p.m. Expect Obama to be called the winner instantly and a too-close-to-call situation between McCain and Romney when the networks take to the air.
Update: Spare a thought for Rudy, who doesn’t otherwise figure into today’s proceedings. And that word is … crater.
Update: As of 7:35 ET, 4+% of the precincts have reported. Politico has results.
Update: No Hillary hate, no money.
I just got a call from a conservative marketing consultant I know. He is in a panic. “I am in the midst of a major crisis with a lot of people,” he said. “Hillary Clinton is going to die today. Do you know what that means for conservative fundraising all over America?”
Update: The exit polls are out. Good news for Hillary, per Fox News — Hillary’s within five and McCain leads Mitt by five.
Update: McCain staffers are very optimistic.
Update: An insider tells Geraghty that Hillary’s lead is somewhat misrepresentative and should correct itself over the course of the evening.
Update: Two races down, 48 states left to go, says Silky in his concession speech, hinting that he’s in it for the long haul. Juan Williams speculated earlier that he might stay in it as long as he can just to antagonize Hillary, the “status quo candidate.” That’s exceptionally stupid if true since he’s almost certainly pulling more from Obama than from Clinton. Call it a double victory for the Glacier if she pulls this one out.
Dean Barnett e-mails: “98% of America will get the opportunity to reject John Edwards! My turn will come on 1/29 – can’t wait!”

I will drink tonight until BHO beats HRC by 12 (twelve) or more points or I pass out, whichever comes first.
Pass the popcorn.

Oh man, this is going to be a blood-bath for Shhhillary.
Obama 60%, Shillary 10%, Edwards 10%
Now if only she would finish 3rd behind Edwards.

I’m glad that Mitt has lots of money so I can get behind him when Fred drops out. I think that Fred has the best positions, but is not very interesting to the American people.

What is that? A small rebutt?
fourstringfuror on January 8, 2008 at 7:15 PM
Why would Sky News have the exit polls first?
froghat on January 8, 2008 at 7:15 PM
Shouldn’t we be careful about what we wish for here? After all, the economy is slumping and B.O. and Phony Boy want to raise taxes. And for some reason — despite this — B.O. is popular with Indies. Maybe the Hill is our best hope (assuming we beat her in the national election).
Spolitics on January 8, 2008 at 7:16 PM
Huckabee’s definitio of momentum (this is a real quote):
“If we finish even in fourth place, we’re still definitely moving forward with momentum,” he said while chatting with a crowd of supporters in front of a polling place. “Because everything we show above sixth place is momentum for us.”

That is the gamble Rudy took, but he is betting that the other Republicans beat up on McCain so much that McCain will be pretty much out of the race when he gets in, and Romney will have been sorely beat up.

Romney has the best chance against Obama in the general. Both can compete as Washington outsiders, and both can make an argument for changing Washington. The question then becomes – what kind of change?
Romney is big on specifics and has 73 page booklet of his agenda on his website, while Obama talks in very vague terms. Obama has never done anything successfully except campaign, while Mitt can point to his accomplishments in business, the olympics, and fixing the budget crisis in Massachusetts, as well as being the only politician in America to offer a conservative solution to health care.
If Romney finishes 2nd in New Hamshire- he will be in first place in terms of number of delegates. Why would you drop out when you have the most delegates?
The MSM is always in a hurry to declare a front runner because it makes a good story. Also, I think they are about as tired of the campaign as the rest of us political junkies, but this one might go the distance.

The press has characterized NH as a must win for Romney. Is that just pro-McCain spin? It’s clear the press is rooting for a McCain come back. At least until (if) he actually comes back and then they’ll probably go back to pushing Huck.

Fred is up to 2%!! haha Go Fred! 5% would be a victory there for him
UKFB2 on January 8, 2008 at 7:46 PM
I think that the MSM would like to shut Romney down because he would run well against Obama. I can’t understand why conservatives don’t line up for Mitt….I’ve been for Rudy and I’ve been for Fred, but I don’t think Fred can win and I think Obama would just blow Rudy out in the general. If the Dem nominee were Hillary, I might go back to Rudy.

Romney had an early state strategy from the start. He’s spent boatloads in IA and NH in the hopes that it would build enough momentum before Super Tuesday. Remember- until recently, he was very weak in the national polls. Unfortunately Huckabee shook things up and the national numbers amongst the frontrunners are relatively close.
Hollowpoint on January 8, 2008 at 7:50 PM

OT: Fred was just on Fox News (live), and called SC his “firewall”. He said what many of us have been thinking- he needs to win or at least do very well in SC.

Sue on January 8, 2008 at 7:54 PM
Yeah, but as any good businessman knows, if your first strategy doesn’t work you alter the strategy, you don’t quit and say, “that didn’t work so I’m done”. He still has the money and the delegates and what he has spent has brought him national attention and he is polling well nationally now.

Sue on January 8, 2008 at 7:55 PM
I’m scared of Obama being their candidate, because enough people have been fooled by media Messiah making of him, and the whole “he’ll reach across the aisle”/”change” BS.
We need Hillary because she’s virtually unelectable in the general election.
The one reason I’m not panicking (YET!) is because at last check, Hillary still had something like 20 points on Obama in national polls… which to me means that she should take some of the bigger, more important states… I’m sure Barry will get a bump if he wins NH (and the media certainly seems intent on making the bump as big as possible), but 20 points is HOPEFULLY a big enough gap that Hillary will still wind up taking this thing… and as always I have to say – the Clintons play dirty (VERY dirty) and if I was Obama (assuming his momentum continues) I’d hire a food taster, etc. ASAP.
