Is Hillary going to win this thing? Update: Diebold! Update: Hillary rebounds among women

A steady four-point lead with fully one-third of precincts of reporting. Geraghty’s source says the early result is misrepresentative, but Michael Barone thinks she’s in the game and there’s some word of exit polls being “re-weighted.”

Has the Second Coming of the Messiah already been aborted? And if so, how many times are we going to hear the “15 percent lie” cited as an explanation tomorrow? Looks like America might be racist again.

Update: Obama’s already cut it to two in the past few minutes. Any loss within single digits will be spun by Hillary, not entirely unreasonably, as a momentum-stopper, so it’s a fairly good night for her already.

Update (Bryan): Hold the phone, she’s back up to a four-point lead. Comeback Kid’s Revenge in the making?

Update: Hmmm — Fox News is reporting that the college towns have yet to be counted.

Update: Spin or omen?

Update: The either/or excuse to go with the “15 percent lie”: Diebold!

Update: The secret to Hillary’s surprise? She recaptured the women’s vote that Obama won in Iowa, taking New Hampshire’s women by 13 points. Did the tears do the trick? As for independents, surprisingly, Obama’s lead is only seven points.

Update: Lowry offers an intriguing, staggeringly ironic theory. Did press hype for the Messiah suppress turnout among independents?

The Crying Game

Jaibones on January 8, 2008 at 9:55 PM

Brilliant. All the radio shows need to pick that one up!

Warning: Not for the faint of heart.

RushBaby on January 8, 2008 at 10:05 PM

From the Texas Rainmaker link…

A post here in DU informed that Black Box Voting’s hacker Harri Hursti was able to hack the Diebold optical scanners in NH this week.

The news really isn’t that the nutroots are again blaming electoral defeat on conspiracy theories… but that they’re highlighting the fact that Democrats are out there trying to commit election fraud today. Quite the admission.

I have long suspected that the threat of hacking is far greater from the left than from the right. I also suspect that several senate races have been “hacked” in favor of Democrats in the last two election cycles. I think Webb’s victory in particular is highly suspect. I also think the Clintons helped Obama win his senate seat, which is why they are so p*ssed at him now…it’s like “we MADE you, d*mnit, so who do you think you are to challenge Hillary for the presidency now?”

Just my opinion, but I think it’s highly likely that I’m right.

I think it’s possible that Democratic women are just really, really gullible. However, Obama’s useless on foreign policy, so whatevah. Whoever they want to lead their party is their biz.

that was open outcry, not secret ballot, so the fashionability of voting for a minority for sake of doing so (and the fear of being cast a racist) was still in play. Iowa may have been the anamoly

My dream? Hillary and Obama battle it out in every primary state with Obama coming out say 1-3% ahead overall. Then the Clinton machine strong-arms all the SUPER-DELEGATES to give her the nomination in Colorado. That way Repubs get to face Shillary after the Dems b***ch-slap Obama back to the plantation where they really think “people of color” belong doing their assigned work of voting for the Democrat establishment.

Spirit of 1776 on January 8, 2008 at 10:23 PM

Not Diebold, but perhaps “massive polling error” regarding the first-ever black candidate (i.e. people voting differently from the way they white-guiltily answer phone polls). I was expecting we might see a big polling overestimate of Obama in Iowa, but then again, that was open outcry, not secret ballot, so the fashionability of voting for a minority for sake of doing so (and the fear of being cast a racist) was still in play. Iowa may have been the anamoly and HRC was never truly in jeopardy.

flip on January 8, 2008 at 9:58 PM

I have thought this for a while now.

The polling phone call comes: “Would you vote for Barack Obama for president?”

The respondent, who has probably been called “racist” a time or two (you know, for, like, being opposed to affirmative action or something) or who has been forced to sit through “diversity training” at work: “Uhhhhhh…sure!”

Then the voter closes the curtain on the voting booth and does what he damn well pleases.

Wind Rider on January 8, 2008 at 10:24 PM

It looks like a stalemate in the Democrat primaries. Why don’t the Dems go ahead and call it a quagmire and immediately “redeploy”? Or will they invoke a surge strategy? Funny what is bad in political campaigns is supposed to be good for military campaigns. I don’t see the Dems calling it quits just because no clear cut winner can be determined. Why are they so eager to cut and run in Iraq but not on their political ambitions? C’mon do what is good for America, all of you quit.

Just A Grunt on January 8, 2008 at 10:24 PM
