Hey baldilocks,

I’ll be honest I haven’t read extensively on the CRA.
Probably the truth is that both parties Dems and Republicans had supporters of Civil Rights Act and also segregationist. It’s probably not fair that either party claim they have a clean civil rights legacy. The media, however, does make it was the Dems are the party of civil rights.

In defense of Hillary, it *DID* take LBJ, not JFK, to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Bill. And LBJ did it by reaching across the aisle to Republican Senators, and cajoling members of his own party who were very reluctant. Southern Democrats by and large were solidly behind segregation.

If all it took was a campaign of civil disobediance and speeches, the Civil Rights Act would have been passed after the Montgomery Bus Boycott ended in 1956 (Rosa Parks). Dr. King’s bravery was not enough — it took a professional pol in the White House willing to go all out to do it. LBJ has a lot of bad marks but IMHO deserves credit where it’s due.

Obama is getting a lot of play now because people feel “safe.” The NYT had a link to this story on one of their caucus blogs, commenter after commenter talked about “fear mongering.”

The world IS a dangerous place. Pakistan could go belly up for Osama any moment. Iran light off a nuke or sink a US warship. Kenya devolve into Somalia South. Another mass casualty terror attack here or abroad. Obama has in response to any of that — West Wing style speeches. In times of crisis people want a tough guy. Not “President Bartlett” rushing around Aaron Sorkin style.

Hillary was the toughest candidate the Dems had in the general, because people figured she’d pull the trigger if she had to. Obama would hug someone. In the general election that’s a disaster. Because a crisis *somewhere* is sure to come.

I had placed myself with the “Anyone but Clinton” camp for President. I’ve joined another group to be safe. It’s the “Anyone but Clinton for Vice-President” camp.

Join both. It’s necessary. I have a sneaking suspicion that Obama will make Hillary the VP on the ticket due to pressure from the DNC and the all the old Democratic Machine money that is already inside the Clinton campaign coffers. Ergo, Obama will raise money, but in order to tap into all the Hillcash he will have to offer her a position of stature within a potential Obama administration.

The fact that the other Dem candidates (Silky, Shrill) are all trying to jump on Barack’s “change” message now just makes them look like desperate hacks. Barack’s message is resonating, and he is an incredible speaker who can always get them “riled up”, and Silky and Hill just aren’t going to be able to do that by being copycats. It will turn people off. Also Barack has turned this election into a “positivity” campaign. People like him, he is all about good vibes and hope. Watching Hillary attack him only makes her seem jealous, desperate and mean and focuses her campaign on negativity which will turn people off. If all you can do is bash someone for their “inexperience” or “great rhetoric, wanting record”, what are you bringing the table? People want a positive campaign. I think people are supporting Barack because he seems more interested in ideas and dreams than personal ambition or self-preservation. And listening to John Edwards sprinkle the word “change” 34867256 times in all his speeches now makes him just look like a cheap Barack imitation who showed up late. At this point Hillary is not going to be able to try to halt Barack’s rise by attacking him. Especially considering the titanic Clinton political machine of which she’s at the helm, the fact that she hasn’t been able to knock him down just shows how remarkable what’s happening with Barack is.

Friend, I don’t mean to be obnoxious but please educate yourself on the facts regarding the CRA. There was an excuse for “minorities”–especially conservative ones–not to know this stuff before the Information era. There isn’t now.

True! People forget that Dr. King was a Republican and that the Civil Rights Act was started under the Eisenhower administration. LBJ, as Senate Majority Leader, stripped the bill of any enforcable criminal provisions.

I’m surprised the Clinton machine hasn’t gone after Obama. It’s not as if there’s nothing out there to use against him — like his membership in the black supremacist church. They took a stab at him a few weeks ago — pointing out his less-than-stellar record as a state senator (lots of good for nothing “present” votes — not likely to generate much positive “change” with those, was he?), but there was no follow-up. They need to go after this guy hard, but they seem to be afraid to do it. With the media fawning all over Obama like he’s the second coming, and with so many voters buying into the media hype, it’s now or never time for the Clintons. The meek may inherit the earth, but they aren’t going to win any elections.
