Fox News calls it for McCain; Update: NBC, CNN too

Disaster for Mitt!
Update: NBC’s calling it too. Who could have guessed the GOP race tonight would be over before the Democratic?
Update: And now CNN’s calling it.
Update: McCain vs. Huck vs. Romney’s last stand in Michigan. What’s the best outcome?
Update: At least the nightmare scenario is averted. Showdown in Michigan!
Update (bp): Michael Barone was just on Fox and said that it’s possible that Hillary’s lead will hold and she would win. That seems unlikely, but it would be good news for the Republicans if she hangs on. The Democrat race would keep going. The Clintonistas would keep getting uglier. The downside is we’d get another “Comeback Kid” meme started. Ugh.
A Hillary win also keeps Giuliani viable, for the Rudy fans out there. He needs Hillary as a foil and would run poorly against Obama imho.

McCain
Romney
Huck
Makes things flattest for Fred in SC, esp. if Romney is hurting and Huck is bleeding internally. A nasty dust-up between these three in MI could also serve to sour voters on them as a group.

No… By my logic you can either guarantee sh***y times to come (by staying home and bravely “sending a message to the GOP”), or you can support a chance of that kind of America, or of possibly less sh***y times to come. Sorry, but I’d rather not be selfish and just say “f**k it, let’s flush the country down the toilet”, when there is at least a slight chance of saving it if we don’t give up complete control to the Soros/UN owned Democratic Party.

It seems my misgivings about Mitt (wot)are running along the same lines as the voters in NH.
Mitt has been ignoring the WOT and is ignorant of what military families go through. I have yet to get a response from them on my various emails. I will be sending another email and making another call to explain it to him again.
And here he is, with the same rhetoric and the WOT is always an afterthought. Wise up Mitt. It’s the war stupid.

What’s with FNC’s 37/28%?
14/25 = 0.56
10/25 = 0.4
With 24 odd percent voting.
If the differential stays the same, Mitt’s going to climb into the low 30’s and McCain is staying in the mid 30’s.
BKennedy on January 8, 2008 at 8:52 PM
He also lacks Romney’s money and Huckabee’s personality (which is what’s winning it for him). So there’s that.

I’m listening to Mitt’s speech right now. I haven’t heard ONE SINGLE mention of the war. Not one.
He talks about families but ignores the issues that military families face.
OK, there is one mention of the military. In the very last sentence. Weak Mitt. Real weak.

Spirit of 1776 on January 8, 2008 at 8:54 PM
LOL! Wisen up people. The longer it takes Fred and Rudy supporters to realize Mitt is the best option to beat Huckabee and McCain, the more likely it is that one of them will be the nominee.
davenp35 on January 8, 2008 at 8:55 PM
Disaster for Mitt?
Did you people flunk math?
There is no “favorite son” on the GOP side.
Mitt Romney won Wyoming, came in second in Iowa and will do the same in New Hampshire.
If you total the votes cast thus far, Romney has the most.
If you total the delegates awarded thus far, Romney has the most.
Mitt Romney has the most money with which to campaign.
This is a man whose name was only known to 5% of the GOP this time last year.
It would be foolish to count him out at this time.

William Amos on January 8, 2008 at 8:57 PM
How wise is it for Mitt to keep saying that what is needed is a Washington outsider to get things done when he trails Huckabee in poll after poll? Huck, another outsider, was governor more than twice as long as he was and is much better on the stump.
Also, if people in his backyard aren’t excited by Romney, what makes him believe he can excite people anywhere?

Mcguyver on January 8, 2008 at 8:58 PM
I very much hope that Romney wins in Michigan. Not just because Romney is in my top couple, but because I think the race needs to remain wide open for longer. More time needs to pass for the fads to fade, so we can objectively choose a candidate without falling for emotion or herd mentality.
viking999 on January 8, 2008 at 8:58 PM
Seems roughly 1/2 the people that live in NH are probably Massachusetts transplants, so the word Independent voters in NH doesn’t mean a lot. Just guessing, overall there will be more votes for Democrats, they get the majority and though Mc Cain might win with 15% reporting, Mitt will do fine once it’s out of the more left leaning bias states. I truely hope McCain won’t last long as we move onward. Myself living in Massachusetts, I’m bummed because people such as Romney, Fred, (or Healey) who make (made) sense are a just a dream to me. I hope can only hope someday that will change- Yeah to that ‘new’ buzz word ‘change’… PLeeazeeeeeeeee let’s start with Massachusetts! Thank you Mitt for 4 years of hope I had with you being govenor

C’mon folks. This process has a ways to go, and it’s still wide open. We all know Iowa (my birth home – but been gone longer than I lived there) and NH rarely reflect what the end game brings.

HarryBalzac on January 8, 2008 at 9:09 PM
Whomever gets the Republican nomination in the end will be my choice. The very worst of the GOP field is better than the best in the Democratic field. Those of you who will sit at home if your ideal man does not get in deserve the higher taxes and policy disasters that will follow with a Clinton or Obama in office.
carbon_footprint on January 8, 2008 at 9:09 PM
Hmmm what you say is interesting. I’m Mr. Hawk, fully understand the nature of our enemy, and recognize the global war we’re in as the transcendent struggle of our time.
Yet, I don’t see any issues with Mitt Romney on that as you do. I would argue Rudy Giuliani is better than McCain on these issues, and Thompson and Romney are just as solid as McCain, without the torture/Gitmo opposition. The only Rep I would have serious concerns with is obviously Huckabee, and his foreign policy alone is a deal killer with me.
From what I’ve seen and heard Romney has spoken often on the war against the jihadists we’re in, etc. How come you say he doesn’t? But interesting that’s your perception nevertheless. On one hand I’d say it’s refreshing and good to see Republicans priorities right and voting as that the number one issue, but polls and Huckabee’s rise and continued support sadly refutes it.

McCain’ll work. He can beat the dhimmicrats. No problem. And I do appreciate his steadfast support of our troops, and of the Iraq Cause in general (this is a man that knows the true lesson of Vietnam). I just hope that he did learn his lesson on ILLEGAL immigration — but if he did not, I am confident that The People are primed to remind him. I’m stilll a Mitt man, but I am not downcast by this result. Mitt can beat the dems. McCain can beat the dems. Rudy can beat the dems. Fred could have beat the dems if he’d got his act together in time. Huck is a dem, for all practical purposes (aside from abortion) and Obama would whoop his ass on “likeablility” points. So let’s get our heads together and back the man who can beat HIllary/Obama.

The real story here is the Dem race. Hillary is hanging on by a thread and we NEED her to be their nominee.
And I’ll repeat my joke from earlier (based on Hillary being up at the moment with 38% reporting), even if I was the only one that thought it was funny:

There is also something wrong with the primary system when 90+% of the people in the country might not be able to vote for their candidate in the primary due to the staggered primary system. It’s odd and problematic in so many ways.

christophercube on January 8, 2008 at 9:22 PM
Man, I keep hoping that in my lifetime I’ll have a conservative candidate I can get excited about, rather than having to swallow a “lesser-of-two-evils, pick-one-or-the-dems-win” scenario.
At some point, principle matters and staying home – even if it yields undesirable results – is worth it. The alternative is that we continue to get cold-fish candidates who are nothing but democrat/liberal-lite. Maybe if we stay home and let the thing devolve into liberal lunacy faster, we’ll be able to get about the business of building it back up correctly that much sooner.
This crap-for-candidates routine is getting old. Fast.

BKennedy on January 8, 2008 at 9:24 PM
Looks like on both sides, Dem and Rep, this will go on.
Obama-mania did not crush Hillary. So yes the Messiah vs. the Pants suit. Romney is still in this, most money and delegates, McCain out of money and Huck third. Even Rudy has a shot to make something happen in Florida, and Fred! in NH.
I don’t like McAmnesty or Hucka-fool. I like Romney a lot and also Fred (I’m conservative). I respect Rudy and while he has lots of baggage for me I would happily vote for him against any Dem.
My guess on why Mitt has not talked about the WoT: immigration and economic issues are polling higher than that now for his samples, so he’s responding to that. It’s a crap-shoot, something could change tomorrow ala Ralph Peters column in the NY Post. But Mitt is a guy who runs by “the numbers” and he’s done reasonably well by that. Just like Fred he is who he is.
whiskey_199 on January 8, 2008 at 9:25 PM
Curious why you think that. Giuliani and Romney are the only two who I think could avoid getting lost in Obama’s fog of rhetoric. And I think Rudy will do much better than Romney at reminding people of Obama’s goofiness on national security.

Even with his fortune, you gotta admit that Romney is finished. Mitt spent massive amounts of cash very early in both Iowa and NH with attack ads galore. These were two states Mitt HAD to have considering his massive effort.
Nationally Mitt is polling 9 or 10% (latest Gallup). With such dismal numbers natioanlly, and two crucial defeats, what does Mitt do now except to fruitlessly spend his fortune on more and more attack ads?

Igor R. on January 8, 2008 at 9:27 PM
Simple. It’s a defeat for Mitt if Mitt is defeated. It’s bad for him if he keeps coming in second. He’s got the advantage of money, organization, and a decent executive record, and has adopted all the “right” positions. He’s certainly made no lack of effort at Iowa and New Hampshire. He’s basically had all the advantages, but the only state he’s won so far is … Wyoming.
Is it a disaster? That’s not simple. It will be a disaster if the electorate decides that he can’t win even with all the advantages.
If that happens, one of the also-ran candidates could suddenly get most of his voters and run away with it. Most likely beneficiary of that: Fred! But even Duncan Hunter is not entirely out of it yet.
