Fox News calls it for McCain; Update: NBC, CNN too

Disaster for Mitt!
Update: NBC’s calling it too. Who could have guessed the GOP race tonight would be over before the Democratic?
Update: And now CNN’s calling it.
Update: McCain vs. Huck vs. Romney’s last stand in Michigan. What’s the best outcome?
Update: At least the nightmare scenario is averted. Showdown in Michigan!
Update (bp): Michael Barone was just on Fox and said that it’s possible that Hillary’s lead will hold and she would win. That seems unlikely, but it would be good news for the Republicans if she hangs on. The Democrat race would keep going. The Clintonistas would keep getting uglier. The downside is we’d get another “Comeback Kid” meme started. Ugh.
A Hillary win also keeps Giuliani viable, for the Rudy fans out there. He needs Hillary as a foil and would run poorly against Obama imho.

HOW? How many precincts?
John_Locke on January 8, 2008 at 8:14 PM
12% of the vote. Yeah, it seems early to me too.
Bryan on January 8, 2008 at 8:14 PM
12% of the vote and all three 24 hour stations call it. He might win, but this is still pathetic.
Nonfactor on January 8, 2008 at 8:15 PM
Wow… what took them so long…
/extra snark
mo_gunslinger on January 8, 2008 at 8:15 PM
With 11% reporting?
John_Locke on January 8, 2008 at 8:15 PM
CNN and MSNBC are calling it also. The Mac is back?
Complete7 on January 8, 2008 at 8:16 PM
SECOND LOOK AT BIG MAC!!
Good Lt on January 8, 2008 at 8:16 PM
If McCain wins the nomination I won’t vote for him
jacobh on January 8, 2008 at 8:16 PM
There’s no way. Romney could still pull it out. For God’s sakes with that little in, Fred could pull it out of his a$$
John_Locke on January 8, 2008 at 8:16 PM
Hillary up by over 1,000 votes still
William Amos on January 8, 2008 at 8:17 PM
Less than 1/2% of the electorate has had a chance to vote in a primary. please tell me how this results in a disaster for anyone? Don’t the other 49.5% have a say in picking our candidates?
paulsur on January 8, 2008 at 8:17 PM
Yeah, I had just flipped to CNN to see how they were covering things (comparing numbers to Fox) and they announced McCain as winner.. I quickly flipped to both Fox and MSNBC and all were calling it for McCain.
I’ll accept that this is true… but can anyone explain to me how they can call it with only 12% precincts reporting? I never understand that.
RightWinged on January 8, 2008 at 8:17 PM
If McCain holds this 9pt lead, he is going to have big mo into Michigan and SC.
Complete7 on January 8, 2008 at 8:17 PM
And now it’s the Mitt supporters turn. :)
This reminds me the scene in the movie Clue, when everybody keeps running from one room to another reviewing all of the evidence.
FloatingRock on January 8, 2008 at 8:17 PM
I’m terrible with statistics, but even this doesn’t seem right.
John_Locke on January 8, 2008 at 8:18 PM
based on exit polls
Vagueperson on January 8, 2008 at 8:18 PM
Interestingly they arent calling the Dems race. That is telling
William Amos on January 8, 2008 at 8:19 PM
Good for McCain. I’m from NH. This was predictable from the start for us local folk. Never understood why national pundits kept calling Mitt the local boy and that he should do well in NH. We can’t stand Mass-h*les and their bureaucratic mess of a state, even despite Mitt’s attempt to clean up that state.
yojimbo30 on January 8, 2008 at 8:19 PM
FOX News is starting to get on my nerves! Their slogan “We report, We decide”. Notice, they don’t even show the totals except for the top two in each party. What’s up with that? MSNBC shows all of them. Hopefully when they get the RINO’s off the air and bring on Hannity he will have them do better.
livermush on January 8, 2008 at 8:19 PM
I know, I mean Hillary has a huge lead like McCain… /snark
John_Locke on January 8, 2008 at 8:20 PM
Man, they are as slow as maple syrup running up the tree in January.
Mcguyver on January 8, 2008 at 8:20 PM
Explain to me how not voting for McCain if he`s our guy, makes things better?…….HOW?
ThePrez on January 8, 2008 at 8:20 PM
Romney… I guess? He’s definitely picked up a lot of his conservatism recently, which makes me question it, but I still trust him more than McAmnesty for some reason. Fred didn’t decide until this week that he actually wanted it, so I think he may be done unless he pulls off SC.
RightWinged on January 8, 2008 at 8:20 PM
I can’t back McCain based on his bullheadedness on immigration. I’m disgusted.
swami on January 8, 2008 at 8:20 PM
It’s based on exit polls which are then compared with a sampling of raw vote totals. As much as I hate to admit it, the media guys who do this know what they are doing. Statistically, there is less than 1% chance of them making an error.
flyfisher on January 8, 2008 at 8:21 PM
Get some big MOJO Mav!
He can take the big race from bOregasm Boy, I really believe it. Mitt is just too fake, he reminds me of Kerry.
Meanwhile, look at hillary hanging tough. Wouldn’t that be nice?

John McCain is our worst nightmare….
therightwinger on January 8, 2008 at 8:22 PM
Wow…the guy that wiped his butt on the Constitution (McCain) wins New Hampshire.
CABE on January 8, 2008 at 8:22 PM
Haha, but are they worse than us Vermonters? I remember going to Mass with my cousin to buy his boat 2 summers ago and chatting with the dude who was selling it he was bitching about Taxachusetts, and I was like dude, who do you think you’re talking to? Vermont has the highest taxes per capita in the nation!
RightWinged on January 8, 2008 at 8:22 PM
They have Hillary at 40%
Do people really think this is how it will look when the other 90% of the votes are counted?
EJDolbow on January 8, 2008 at 8:22 PM
I am trying out a chat room on my site for primary nights and such. Come over and chat with me! You don’t have to register or anything!
Rightwingsparkle on January 8, 2008 at 8:22 PM
The real question to consider is how did Romney let this happen? He owned New Hampshire even a month ago. Since he is supposed to be a great manager, shouldn’t he have been able to manage to hold on to his significant lead?
flyfisher on January 8, 2008 at 8:23 PM
So you and all like-minded voters will stay home, hand it to Obama or Clinton (who will do amnesty above and beyond).
I`m not firmly behind anyone, but once more, how the hell is that better?
ThePrez on January 8, 2008 at 8:23 PM
Why did you vote for Senator McAmnesty?
paulsur on January 8, 2008 at 8:23 PM
Because I would rather lose then sell my soul
jacobh on January 8, 2008 at 8:23 PM
Where’s this big blowout Obama victory? 12% of the precincts are in, and Hillary’s up by 2%….
Curious why more isn’t being said about this. Weren’t people predicting Obama would win by as much as 20?
Purple Fury on January 8, 2008 at 8:23 PM

RightWinged on January 8, 2008 at 8:24 PM
National security and the war against the islamofascists is far and away my number one issue, but I don’t think McCain is any better on that than any of our candidates other than Huckabee.
Patriot33 on January 8, 2008 at 8:24 PM
LOL, check out FOX News’ delegate count…
malan89 on January 8, 2008 at 8:24 PM
I can see that McCain wins NH, but I’m surprised to all hell to see HRH Clinton up over Obama, pleasantly surprised, I might add. Better her than B. Hussein Obama. If I’m going to be forced to live under a Dem pres, as bad as she is, she’s still better than that liberal a-hole.
Mercutio on January 8, 2008 at 8:24 PM
I could not say it better
KBird on January 8, 2008 at 8:25 PM
If this is true that means Romney came is first in Wyoming which has the same number of delegates as New Hampshire.
Also Romney came in second in Iowa and will come in second in New Hampshire which will make him the leader in winning and delegates.
Why do people think the guy leading should get out and the losers should stay in?
EJDolbow on January 8, 2008 at 8:26 PM
Hillary cried, Obamamania died?
RightWinged on January 8, 2008 at 8:26 PM
Yeah, I’m pretty much a Hillary fan* for the night. The more I read about the Messiah, the more I see he’s the Marxist Manchurian. Or wait – “Manchurian Candidate” would mean he’d be hiding it, right?
Not that she’s any less scary, but the Obama has already turned half the country into a frothing Oprahfied Red Guard is causing me more than a little concern.
Hannibal Smith on January 8, 2008 at 8:28 PM
this…. makes us sad…
Drunk Report on January 8, 2008 at 8:28 PM
The problem with Senator Mcamnesty on the War on terror, is that he thinks it is all hoppening somewhere far over there. He is oblivious to the jihad right in his front yard.
Add to that, he hates the Bush tax cuts, will probabaly raise our taxes, and a lot of New Hampshirans did not bother to do their homework. Might as well voted for a democrap.
paulsur on January 8, 2008 at 8:28 PM
Statistically, there is less than 1% chance of them making an error.
I’m not saying they are wrong this time, but didn’t they erroneously call several states for ol-what’s-his-name early during the ‘04 presidential election.
AUINSC on January 8, 2008 at 8:29 PM
McCain– the perfect reason to stay home in November.I refuse to ever again vote for a RINO

Bambi and the Maverick will hit the wall on Feb. 5th.
oldvannes on January 8, 2008 at 8:31 PM
Seems odd to call it like this.
And if the media is so correct, why on earth did they practically give teh state to Obama, if Hillary’s going to win?
Vanceone on January 8, 2008 at 8:32 PM
What’s this? McCain people working for free?
Connie on January 8, 2008 at 8:32 PM
i wont vote in my first presidential election for a rino.
blatantblue on January 8, 2008 at 8:32 PM
If McCain is nominated, it means that independents and liberals have hijacked the party. The Reagan-conservatism of the Republican party will have died.
Go Mitt!
HYTEAndy on January 8, 2008 at 8:32 PM
Could the media-hyped near certainty of an Obama blowout have shifted a significant number of independent Obama leaners to McCain at the last minute, because they suddenly felt like they could safely get a win for both Obama and McCain?
a4g on January 8, 2008 at 8:33 PM
I will definitely NOT vote for McCain or Huckabee in the general. If the Fredheads actually wanted to stop the liberal tagteam Huckabee and McCain from leapfrogging through the states and ensuring one of them a nomination, they need to get behind the man with the money, the delegates, and the national poll numbers…Mitt Romney.
davenp35 on January 8, 2008 at 8:33 PM
Especially since they have admitted the numbers haven’t come in from the southern areas of NH which is closer to mass.
I can’t stand McLame and if these morons want an amnesty pusher running things, they need to come out to Californian and live here for a few years to see just what amnesty causes.
I am hopping for a long prolonged blood match with the pants suit and the messiah. Let them break their banks on ads for super duper Tuesday.
Mojack420 on January 8, 2008 at 8:33 PM
If Huckabee or McCain get the nomination, the Dems will have already won! They will have their wish of getting a liberal in office without a fight.
davenp35 on January 8, 2008 at 8:34 PM
If he was the nominee, I would actually vote for him. Not because I would want to, but I do think he might do alright on the WOT and National Security. Everything else, not so much.
AUINSC on January 8, 2008 at 8:34 PM
Then you will essentially vote for a Democrat, whether you physically do it or not. Hey everyone, if our nominee is a former shamnesty supporter who CAVED TO OUR PRESSURE, let’s all stay home and GUARANTEE AMNESTY BY ELECTING A DEMOCRAT!!!
/ridiculous crap that has been passing for logic around here lately
RightWinged on January 8, 2008 at 8:34 PM
Please dont insult us by attempting to say that Mitt is anything NEAR a Reagan Conservative. That is insult to the highest order.
broker1 on January 8, 2008 at 8:35 PM
This is a state where they decide on their candidate on the way to the polls. Who cares what these idiots think?
TheSitRep on January 8, 2008 at 8:35 PM
They realize their beliefs align more closely with the dems and all switch parties at the same time.
Valiant on January 8, 2008 at 8:36 PM
The democrats are outpolling the R’s by a lot…. 2:1 at least.
SouthernGent on January 8, 2008 at 8:36 PM
Wow, what an extrapolation. But, either way, I’m guessing your a Fredhead.
I was one, too, once. I learned real quick-like that he wasn’t a good candidate, and wouldn’t get the nomination.
HYTEAndy on January 8, 2008 at 8:36 PM
By the way, before anyone gets pissed… I’m not “supporting” any of these RINOs that we’ve been arguing about over the past few days… my point is we may have to choose whether we want to take the chance with a RINO who MAY make all of our worst fears come true… or a Democrat who DEFINITELY will.
RightWinged on January 8, 2008 at 8:36 PM
Polling 72 hours before, and exit polling, should be banned.
Free speech issue? Big government? BS……too much at stake with too many opportunities to bamboozle the voters.
Sheeple. They buy what the commercial tells em to buy.
No I don’t want Stalinists kicking in doors. No I don’t want Eichmann looking at my library records. Neither do I want Soro’s or Proctor & Gamble deciding who the ‘winner’ is going to be.
Limerick on January 8, 2008 at 8:36 PM
Let’s put this in perspective. Sen McCain won this state last time with double digits. He’s “winning” with 8%. As time goes on, he’ll fall out like he has the last 2 (or 3?) times he’s run.
As to the early projections by these news channels, Fox probably did it so they would be the first. And since Fox is out, the others are sure to follow. I think it’s dopey they project with such little % in, but they probably take a guess from the exit polling (we know how well those are) and the current results.

McCain is a cool curmudgeon that thinks a lot like I do. That should disqualify him immediately :).
McCain is wasting everyone’s time and needs to get the heck out of the way and help Romney/Perry take it to the house. It’s going to be a battle royale if the dims choose Obama and he chooses Richardson. One for the ages.
pc on January 8, 2008 at 8:40 PM
I pretty much expected McLettuce to carry NH, where a Republican wouldn’t be recognized as a conservative in most other regions.
The bad news is I’m hearing reconciliatory words toward him here in Arizona. Last year the Republican party lost big numbers of voters to the Independent Party due to anger at McLettuce and the state Republican party’s dogged loyalty to him. Now people are starting to mellow out.
Then again, many of Arizona’s Republicans are recent out-of-staters who don’t know his history.
I’ve always wondered, though, at his change of mind/heart in the Bush 2004 campaign. Bush screwed him in 2000 and believe me, McLettuce carries a grudge like no one you’ve ever seen. He suddenly popped up well after the start of the Bush campaign. I always wondered what kind of deal was made in exchange for that support that didn’t come at the beginning…sorry for the conspiracy theorizing but I lived and voted in Arizona before McLettuce was even a resident and I’m not naive about the guy.

So by your logic we should all vote for the Rino that doesnt even listen to his electorate, becuase after all he wears the “republican” moniker?
paulsur on January 8, 2008 at 8:41 PM
I’m with ya.
More like…
McCain wins = possibly recognizes (as he had to before) that we aren’t down with amnesty.
Democrat wins = GUARANTEED amnesty.
Then, consider what will become of our country (not to mention where those millions of new citizens will cast their votes). I won’t want McCain, but I certainly want him over any of these Democrats. Even if the only thing he differed on was his support for the Iraq war, you still have to go out for McCain. Or sit home and think “sending a message” will actually matter and do anything good for the country.

I think we still pick and support a strong 3rd party conservative candidate. We may still lose, but we won’t have compromised on our principles. Further, it will send a lasting message to the republican party. It’s just 4 years, and I am willing to sacrifice that if that is what it takes to fix this whole mess.
paulsur on January 8, 2008 at 8:47 PM
Hmmm, what could this possible mean???
Huck comes in first in Iowa
Mitt comes in First in Wyoming
McCain comes in first in New Hampshire… What it obviously means is that the GOP hasn’t decided on a nominee yet…
On the other hand…
Fred comes in second in Wyoming and third in Iowa…What significance could that possible hold?
The race is far far far from over and Fred Thompson is still in it…As the siterep would say…Fredalanche…
