Video: Dick Morris says Hillary will use race to beat Obama

This is from H&C last night — well known ex-Clintonista turned Hillary hater Dick Morris cites Bill Clinton’s Sister Souljah moment to predict that Hillary will use race to defeat Obama. But among the points he expects Hillary to use against Obama is that he’s “not experienced enough” to be elected. That’s not a racist statement, and it happens to be true imho. It’s also true of Hillary, for whatever that’s worth. If she or a surrogate says the country “isn’t ready” to elect Obama, well, that’s closer to making a race-based case against Obama. But it runs the risk of backfiring badly, as it may prompt uncommitted voters to back Obama just to prove that they’re not racists and that the country is “ready” to elect him. It’s thin gruel. I’m not saying she won’t do this or that she’s somehow above it. She has to do something to knock Obama down a peg, and the Clintons do fight dirty. I’m just not convinced that Morris knows which way her inevitable attack is going to play out.

Besides all of that, just how credulous is Alan Colmes? Totally credulous, at least when a Clinton is the topic. You’ll see that in the second half of the clip.

Exit thought: Who could be Hillary’s Sister Souljah? This potential one also runs certain backfire risks, though the nutroots would eat it up. How about Akon?

Morris pwnd Colmes last night on Clinton’s 1992 Sista Soulja tack. Why he would try that crap against a former Clinton aide is beyond me.

As for HRC, I fully believe she will stoop to whatever level to smear her opponents and win the nomination. I wouldn’t put anything past her.

fourstringfuror on January 7, 2008 at 10:20 AM

Hillary has the character of a street mugger and the value system of rabid animal. Using race a political weapon should be no surprise.

rplat on January 7, 2008 at 10:21 AM

Check Drudges siren. The media is really stirring the pot.

swami on January 7, 2008 at 10:25 AM

A couple of days ago MKH was on Fox News carefully talking about this. Its clear that people are so careful about bringing it up that no one wants to accidentally brand themselves a bigot for bringing up race. I’ve seen both sides of this though. There are more than enough people in America that genuinely aren’t concerned with color, but I’ve met plenty that won’t vote for Obama regardless of what he says. Silly racists. The fact that Obama is a socialist is more than enough of a reason not to vote for him.

blankminde on January 7, 2008 at 10:25 AM

This can’t be coming from the most ethical administration in history.

Thursby on January 7, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Like the “cone of silence”, Obama’s blackness will guard him against all attacks. Hillary tried to play the “girl” card, but was trumped by the “race” card.
He isn’t qualified, well if we weren’t such a racist country, he would have been able to be qualified. People like her kept people like Obama from obtaining everything they need to be successful…
Hillary, you won’t win on this one, the little Dick is wrong.
Obama has the:
Race card
Guilt card
Friendly card
Aw Shucks card
Anti-war card

Wow, she’s going to use race against Obama?

I thought for sure she was going to say, “I was born a poor black child”.

fogw on January 7, 2008 at 10:33 AM

Republicans’ only shot to defeat Obama is… McCain.

Michael in MI on January 7, 2008 at 10:35 AM

here’s an email i sent in response to someone contending that…

Hopefully, CTU will not need to dispatch Jack Bauer to protect him down south.

It will be interesting to see which America is more ready…a black president or a woman president. I think it’s a woman.

not to butt in, but in the spirit of the “polarized nature of american politics”, i figured i’d note that i think the idea that oobama needs any more protection than any other candidate is kinda tacky. the point of saying so isn’t to actually speak to a genuinely held concern, but to smear an entire half of the country (not even a political/confessional half, but a geographic half) as being prone to hate-based violence. fact is, most hate-crimes are reprted from northern cities.

the thing which really concerns me is that this conceit that “the american people are more ready for a woman president than a black one” is a rather clintonite one. it’s meant to be understood that the speaker of it is just looking out for obama’s safety. you know, like when the clinton camp went out there with their statements to the effect of, “…if only obama weren’t so open to republican smear tactics, who will surely mention that he WAS A COKE PUSHING PIMP IN COLLEGE!!” one gets the sense from such helpfull cautionings that there might be some self interest involved. something like a scare tactic. and a smart one. it is after all more clever than saying, “if my opponent wins, i’ll assasinate him.”

on another point, many seem to derive a weird sort of comfort from taking the dozen kkk dudes left in alabama and the eight neonazis left in virginia and recreating them into a well-organized underground which is responsible for and capable of much and which demands the constant vigilance of all decent-minded people. the actual fact of the matter is that the white racist militant can hardly be said to exist. the national socialist party u.s.a., recently broke up because their “information minister” hit on the owner of jew-watch.com’s girlfreind. these people are precisely that silly.

what does a presidential assasin look like? well, jack kennedy was assasinated by a radical progressive named lee harvey oswald who was frustrated with kenedy’s liberal anti-communism. his brother bobby was assasinated by a palestinian rights activist. dacades ago, there was an attempt on fdr’s life by a leftwing anarchist, who managed to get the mayor of chicago instead.

and there’s an unsettling story i’ve never really found the time to tell. it goes like this. about a year ago i moved down to the south side of chicago to a neighborhood called bridgeport nearby sox stadium. bridgeport is basicly identified as the seat of the urban, blue, union democrat machine. guys have nice houses and nice trucks. their daughters are hot and you cant date them. their moms have back problems and could kick your ass. bridgeport is a union hood. i tried fitting in there, but the local folk sure have a way of putting it out there that they hold that there’s some sort of integral linkage between indifference to sports, high income and homosexuality, and that they’d gladly kick your ass for any of those three offences. i tried hanging out in a bar there one evening and i tried to start a conversation. this one guy spoke to me for a while. eventually he got around to talking about his son, who had just recently joined the plumbers union.

“you know, they got him learning the calculus and the triginometry. the fuckin’ kid’s almost taken a whole four year college degree just to qualify to stay on the list and sit in the hall. i tell ya, these guys at the plumbers union are smart. that’s how you keep these fucking niggers out, right?”

that’s who hilary’s base is, and that’s why clinton’s people are eager to put out the idea that nazi death squads, republicans, or “the american people” posed in the most nebulous abstraction possble, are “not ready for a black president”.

jummy on January 7, 2008 at 10:37 AM

If Hilly PO’s the black vote and wins the nomination without it, she’s dead in the water in the general.

snickelfritz on January 7, 2008 at 10:37 AM

She has to do something to knock Obama down a peg, and the Clintons do fight dirty.

The Clintons do, indeed, fight dirty and will do anything – ANYTHING !! - to win the fight.
This includes ….. Oh you know !

OBX Pete on January 7, 2008 at 10:37 AM

Clinton will use a surrogate to use race against Osama. Mostly likely this will be passed thru a filter of some republican unsuspecting patsy.

TheSitRep on January 7, 2008 at 10:38 AM

Drudge says that the new media story is when she pulls out. Maybe we need a Hillary/Fred or Fred/Hillary fusion ticket running on an anti-media theme.

Spirit of 1776 on January 7, 2008 at 10:38 AM

I’m new here so I hope I’m not breaking any rules by saying I find Dick Morris to be completely disgusting. Furthermore, I have no idea why he’s given so much air time on Fox News!

right2bright on January 7, 2008 at 10:26 AM

Hil can discover that her husband has been unfaithful. Then she can play the wronged woman card. That’s worth 5 pts. If she divorces him, because she finds out he has done it before, another 5 pts. Maybe have someone write a country song about it. Better get hopping. S. Carolina primary approaching.

JiangxiDad on January 7, 2008 at 10:40 AM

she’s already been doing it. the meme’s already out there. “america isn’t ready for a black president, but they’re ready for a woman president” and when they elaborate on it, the extended version goes something like, “if obama is elected, he’ll be assasinated by a racist republican, causing a divisive national tragedy (which can be avoided here in the primary).”

jummy on January 7, 2008 at 10:46 AM

You can’t trust Dick Morris for everything, but he’s usually dead-on when it comes to the Clintons. It will be interesting to see if this pans out.

A metaphor for the Clinton campaign (This is my first HA post, so I am going out on a limb here): Clinton ‘92 had a brand new SNES that all the kids in the neighborhood wanted to come over and play. Since then, Obama ‘08 got a Xbox 360 AND a Wii, while Clinton ‘08 still has that SNES and is wondering why no one wants to come over anymore. Sad, but I am definitely feeling that Schadenfreude.

If it does happen, it will be the first time that the toe sucking pimp wannabe was right about anything substantial.

sweeper on January 7, 2008 at 10:47 AM

Seriously I think it was the mid 90s the last time Morris was right about anything. You could make a solid and more accurate career of political punditry by just saying the opposite of what he says.

Well, give him a minute and he’ll change his mind!

toe sucking pimp wannabe

Did Hillary reveal that? Is that why Morris hates her?

JiangxiDad on January 7, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Morris is wrong sometimes but I like the inside dirt he shovels about the Clintons. He has been hedging his bets on Hillary but he has always said that the sheer viciousness of these people would finally catch up with her. Appears it is all hitting the fan now and blowing back in their smarmy faces.

JonRoss on January 7, 2008 at 10:51 AM

For me, the jury’s still out on Dick Morris as a political pundit, but when it comes to the Clintons, I believe everything he says because he was their Karl Rove in the 90’s, until he got involved in his own sex scandal (Oh, the irony!).

Kafir on January 7, 2008 at 10:51 AM

I have been saying for over a year Hillary may not get the nomination, but my question is this: what will she do if not nominated? she has been working towards this for “35 years” as she puts it….

Josh on January 7, 2008 at 10:57 AM

Ah, grasshopper. Just wait for the disillusionments of middle and old age.

Fort Marcy Park is still an Obama option for Cankles.

NoFanofLibs on January 7, 2008 at 11:01 AM

I think Morris is exactly right here.

He shouldn’t tell Colmes to “Get a life,” though, it sounds so 1985.

Shrewd analysis from a seasoned campaign operative, some elbowing from a rival campaign, or just good old fashioned spite?

NoFanofLibs on January 7, 2008 at 11:18 AM

She cant be the first female black president because she didnt grow up with a drunken stepfather, she doesnt qualify as “black”, she has gone through enough (you know what)….Thanks to Mr. Young for setting down the ground rules.

Josh on January 7, 2008 at 11:24 AM

If I were Obama, I’d be doing my own aircraft maintenance these days.

Seriously, I think that the nation is ready for a QUALIFIED female/minority as President. The thing is, they’ve got to be qualified first and a female/minority secondly. This is the inverse in what we have with either Hillary or Obama. They essentially want to vote them into power because they are “ground-breaking” candidates. We are expected to overlook the paucity of their national policy-making experience and just vote for them because of their demographics.

Put another way, everybody likes the idea of electing Obama but the reality (soon to come to light IMO) is that he is utterly out of his depth when it comes to the serious questions about international affairs, national security, or even domestic economic policy. What he’s done in his stump speech is promised everything to everybody without being held to task in explaining how exactly all his plans would be funded. Ditto Hillary.

highhopes on January 7, 2008 at 11:25 AM

Colmes cannot be that stupid — I have always said the only reason he is on the show is to make Hannity look smarter then a mushroom. HRC, like Bubba, is above nothing in order to get elected.

jimwesty on January 7, 2008 at 11:31 AM

Obama five minutes ago on CNN, live carriage of his speech in NH.

I made a mistake this morning. I was speaking before another group and said, “The time for come has changed”.

Hey Bill and Hill ……………. ZING!

It’s always fun to watch Alan Colmes get taken down a peg. I get the feeling Morris just dosen’t like the guy.

Tim Zank on January 7, 2008 at 11:52 AM

Has anyone else noticed how WRONG Morris often is… he switches his position more that John Kerry does. For months he insisted that Hillary was inevitable and that we could all bet our life savings on it. Now he seems to be backing away. He always does this. I don’t doubt that Hillary will turn to racism to win, but he always speaks as if he’s some sort of Delphic Oracle… he’s not. Of course, if she does go racist, she and her minions (like Colmes) will deny it and blame the Republicans… just like they did when they raised to Obama-is-a-closet-Muslim issue.

SouthernGent on January 7, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Hillary will dig up information disclosing that Obama beat someone up back in Kindergarten.

NNtrancer on January 7, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Obama is no Jesse Jackson. Jackson himself was a racebaiting clown who few took seriously except for the PC media.

Hate to say it but Alan is right at the end… the dems got wind of all the excitment among conservatives at the thought of going after hillary if she got the nomination and they went with obama. He will be tougher to beat than hillary.

irish_infidel on January 7, 2008 at 12:29 PM

As Hillary fades, the Clinton tactics will get sharper. Hillary’s tall tales keep getting crazier. Now she is claiming that she was the real peacemaker of Northern Ireland. But I think I have got to the bottom of Hillary’s most bizarre desperate boast. That was her boast that she went on a dangerous mission deep into the Balkans and her airplane had to do a corkscrew landing and it was death defying. Her “dangerous-secret mission” fib collapsed when it turned out that Chelsea and comedian Sinbad were on board. But as to the supposedly “corkscrew landing”, I wondered where on earth could she concoct that fiction. Now I have the answer. In the 1990s, there was a popular political thriller-potboiler called “The Plot Against America”. It was popular, the kind of book people bought at airports. And in the novel, Charles Lindbergh becomes president and at the end of the book, he goes on a harrowing airplane ride which ends in great mystery. I believe that Hillary must have read the novel and then the ending stuck in the back of her mind and when the time came to tell yet another Clinton tall tale, it all came back from her subconscious to her conscious mind and now she thinks it happened.

Larraby on January 7, 2008 at 12:31 PM

I believe Dick.

RobCon on January 7, 2008 at 12:38 PM

irish_infidel on January 7, 2008 at 12:29 PM

Think so? I really think that depends on who the GOP ends up nominating. Face it, B. Hussein really can’t hold up to legitimate scrutiny because he has no experience in national security, international affairs, or domestic economic policy. Obama’s real hope is that Huckabee or Thompson bleeds the GOP of support from within.

My guess is that Romney is probably Obama’s worst fear.

highhopes on January 7, 2008 at 12:54 PM

I thought Jesse endorsed Obama.

They essentially want to vote them into power because they are “ground-breaking” candidates. We are expected to overlook the paucity of their national policy-making experience and just vote for them because of their demographics.

We’re not doing much better on our side. We’re going to end up with someone who is weak on immigration, which for me totally decimates the amnesty outrage experienced this Spring.

Also, you’re not supposed to vote for them because of their demographics. You’re not supposed to vote for Democrats. Republicans are just as hung up on race as Dems. It’s getting old and tired.

The Race Card on January 7, 2008 at 12:54 PM

Wasn’t hillary married to the first black president…???…thought I heard that once…

areseaoh on January 7, 2008 at 1:14 PM

Dick Morris was spot-on when he told Bill O’Reilly to watch Huckabee as the candidate who’d take off on our side.

But I think Dick’s wrong on this one. The issue is not that America isn’t ready to vote in a black president, male or female. Nor is it about whether the country is ready to vote in a female candidate.

Instead, the issue is that America will never be ready for that one particular female candidate. Racial considerations don’t even come into consideration in this case. So many people hate both Clintons, but particularly Hillary, that I truly don’t think she’s got a shred of a chance left. (I hope I don’t have to eat these words later…)

In any event: FUEL THE STOP HILLARY EXPRESS 2008!!!

Ludwig on January 7, 2008 at 5:22 PM

If I were Obama I’d probably open the door myself first. Bring up the fact that he’s black (like no one has noticed) and the country is ready (I really don’t think so……not yet) to vote for the brotha. Then if Hillary wants to beat the race drum it’ll take more than a mere mention. She’ll have to give an example of why a black isn’t ready to be voted in, and she’s bound to say something stupid that’ll hang with her to the end…
