Hot Air poll: Obama vs. Huckabee

posted at 4:50 pm on January 7, 2008 by Allahpundit

Inspired by today’s page one WaPo splash. My worry is that no one on our side matches up well with the Messiah: Romney’s too plastic, McCain’s too old, Rudy’s too one-note, and Huck’s really just selling a less historic, less charismatic version of what Obama’s selling himself. Fred would present the starkest contrast but I’m not confident in his abilities on the trail and a “tradition vs. change” campaign smells like a loser to me this time. Bill Kristol thinks Huck would stand a chance, especially if Bloomberg jumped in to pull votes from Obama, but would a de facto Democrat like Bloomberg really jump in if Obama’s the nominee? He won’t beat him; at most, he’d play spoiler for the Republicans.

The world’s leading “conservative of doubt” expects plenty of aisle-crossing come November by disgruntled Republicans who aren’t “anti-immigrant,” so let’s test that theory with the following poll. All I ask is that you vote how you expect to vote in the winter. Don’t just hit “I’m staying home” in a fit of pique over Huck. Imagine yourself faced with the very real possibility of a Democratic victory. Hop to it.

Blowback

I dont really understand why conservatives hate the Huck so much, cuz he’s not THAT liberal on the record and his platform sounds pretty alright on all the right wing check points. -Richard Bushnell

When you’re running swearing to everyone that you’ve got heart and that you’re the average man’s champion there is something very sour about lacking the true conviction to be anything other than a series of politically motivated “check points”. He’s also a weasel.

blankminde on January 7, 2008 at 5:36 PM

Huckster, but then I take a hot shower and feel shame for a long time.

Laddy on January 7, 2008 at 5:31 PM

A common answer here. But why not just abstain or vote third party, and then forego the four years of shame?

Tzetzes on January 7, 2008 at 5:37 PM

One thing for sure is that I won’t vote for any damn socialist democrat regardless who it is, and I will vote on election day.

docdave on January 7, 2008 at 5:37 PM

I guess I can’t vote in the poll, but Huck and Paul are the two Republicans who could keep me home or voting a write-in.

I understand my not voting for Huck would mean I’m helping Obama win, but I just can’t vote for him. I’m willing to compromise on a lot of issues, but I just don’t see where Huck aligns with me on more issues than Obama does.

Plus, I’m beyond sick of seeing Republican ideals insulted on such a regular basis on TV shows that used to be funny. At least with an actual Dem in the White House cartoons can quit writing about politics.

Repubs/Conservatives in the Congress and Senate and outside Washington on talk radio, can put the heat on Huck and keep him from doing too much Liberal stuff, if he tries!!!

One of Huck’s campaign people insulted Rush Limbaugh. What makes you think Huck would care at all about talk radio people? History would say otherwise.

Esthier on January 7, 2008 at 5:37 PM

O/T – MM is on Fox News right now discussing Billary, getting off some very good and pointed one-liners.

Laura on January 7, 2008 at 5:37 PM

IS there an actual poll for us to click on, or are you just counting comments?

Huck.

No matter what, I will NEVER vote for ANY dimocrap EVER.

Mazztek on January 7, 2008 at 5:37 PM

Hold my nose for Huck.

inchdeep on January 7, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Huckabee definitely stands the best chance of beating Hussein Osama! Time to start the 180 on the anti Huck propaganda.

HaraldHardrada on January 7, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Obama vs.the Huckster, I would really vote for Obama because then the poor economy, tax raises, and other malfeasance could be blamed on the Democrats.

The only positive of a democratic presidency would be the resulting long-term Republican reign in Washington that would be the result. If the stakes weren’t so high at this point in time I may not be so concerned.

henzou on January 7, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Not just that, but whatever Rs remain in Congress will at least fight a Dem rather than go along with Huck for the party’s sake. So, yes, Obama.

Laura on January 7, 2008 at 5:17 PM

Yup. Sorry guys, I think Obama can do us less damage as conservatives and as a nation than Huck. I will “cross over the line” as it were. If its Huck, I am voting Obama.

Either way we get higher taxes, amnesty and more entitlements/debt. I’ll probably stay home.

Romney’s too plastic, McCain’s too old, Rudy’s too one-note, and Huck’s really just selling a less historic, less charismatic version of what Obama’s selling himself.

Gee… we just might have to campaign on the issues. Too bad that we’re wrong on all of them. Oh… wait… we’re not? I guess we’re not so screwed then.

As to the question, I’m not sure about how badly a Huck-a-Chuck administration would actually implode vs. Obama. Hypothetically, if there’s going to be a disaster in the White House, I’d rather it be a Democratic disaster. As a practical matter, I live in California so it isn’t likely to matter how I vote. If these were the choices, I’d most likely go to a third-party conservative candidate, or just write in Duncan Hunter.

ErikTheRed on January 7, 2008 at 5:41 PM

One of Huck’s campaign people insulted Rush Limbaugh. What makes you think Huck would care at all about talk radio people? History would say otherwise.

Esthier on January 7, 2008 at 5:37 PM

the people that put him in office, would likely be listeners…as well as these blogs. He has to keep a certain amount of support, or “Political Capital”, to get other things done. This doesn’t apply absolutely, but politicans do all sorts of things they may not agree with for political reasons and pressures. They aren’t Dictators.

Speaking of Rush, interesting article: Huck to Rush: I am a true conservative

jp on January 7, 2008 at 5:42 PM

Huckabee definitely stands the best chance of beating Hussein Osama! Time to start the 180 on the anti Huck propaganda.

HaraldHardrada on January 7, 2008 at 5:38 PM

No thank you.

Esthier on January 7, 2008 at 5:42 PM

Obama verses Huckabee? That’s preposterous. If we’ve sunk that low I’m going to run for President myself! I’m only glad that we haven’t sunk so low and that Fred Thompson is still in the race.

I think Republicans underestimate the appeal of Americas founding principles at their own risk.

FloatingRock on January 7, 2008 at 5:42 PM

I’d vote for Obama… or Clinton if Huck was the GOP nominee. Overt opposition is a whole lot easier when the Prez is from the other party.

That said, I would have to vote for Huck were Edwards the Dem choice.

bains on January 7, 2008 at 5:44 PM

AP, did you intend to pick a Brokeback Mountain pic of the two of them, or was that just coincidence?

Esthier on January 7, 2008 at 5:46 PM

OK I finally voted, just now was able to see the poll. Hey AP, the site is really-really bogging down.

Are we trying to melt the servers?

conservnut on January 7, 2008 at 5:48 PM

I’d go with Obama. I know Huck is going to destroy the Republican Party, and maybe, just maybe if Obama gets some decent cabinet advisers he won’t royally screw up the planet.

Obama has proven himself not to jump for every identity-politics loving race-baiting troll, and he’s so fresh that it would actually be possible to influence him towards conservatism. Maybe.

He’s also so new and inept that if we get a Republican congress, blocking him will be a piece of cake, whereas Huckster is just going to encourage more punch-drunk Republicans to keep acting like Democrats, and his pro-amnesty true colors is basically going to make Amnesty very, very real.

Huckabee also doesn’t know how to spell “strict constructionist,” so I’d suspect more Harriet-Miers like nominations to the courts. Huck is a pushover squish.

Never mind that Huckabee would probably pardon every inmate on death row.

Sorry folks, I’m not voting in a religious demagogue whose only positive quality is that he’s pro-life and pro-family values. Jimmike Huckacarter can take his demoagoguery elsewhere.

BKennedy on January 7, 2008 at 5:48 PM

I would without doubt vote for Obama in this situation. I think Obama is a more classy guy, better schooled (in every area excluding bible study), and I trust him more then I trust the Huckster.

So far, in this campaign Huckabee has proven to me that he is a complete lying sleezeball. Obama has not proven this to me. In fact he strikes me as a class act. All I know about him is he is politically liberal. I will vote classy liberal Democrat over liberal sleeze with an “R” infront of his name any day of the week. And I will walk through snow to do it.

Zetterson on January 7, 2008 at 5:49 PM

In all good conscience, I can’t vote for Huckabee who looks like a Clinton, quacks like a Clinton so…
That leaves Obama whom I have some respect for but he isn’t selling anything I want either…
So that’s third party or none of the above for me. If Huck at least panders to my side of the aisle (and he’ll have to) I’ll probably hold my nose and vote for him.. but I won’t like it.
Unless Obama panders first…

Skywise on January 7, 2008 at 5:51 PM

Decent third party, or I’ll stay home. Huck vs Obama? I’d rather vote third party Ron Paul. He may be a fruit loop on foreign policy but he’s more conservative on individual rights than either of those two socialists.

MadisonConservative on January 7, 2008 at 5:55 PM

Absent a third part candidate like say a Lou Dobbs, given a choice between Obama and The High Reverend Huckster or Juan Plantation McShamnasty or Rudy Capo, I will probably vote for Obama.

Rudy might, just might be able to win me over.

Huckster is saying the right things on illegal immigration now, what he has on his web site is great, but with his un-Christen, un-American, anti-life rant as Goobernator of Arkansause against those who did not want to roll out the red carpet for illegals I don’t know how I can believe him.

As for McCain, I would vote for the Devil before I would vote for him.

Esthier on January 7, 2008 at 5:37 PM

I agree.
Obama’s appeal is in his lack of accomplishments, thus no record to show he is a waffling weasel like Huck. Huck left a trail of liberalism, and now is trying to talk it away. Obama appears, I say, appears, to be more trustworthy, even if he is a doofus.
So for me, would I rather vote for a naive doofus who seems sincere most of the time, or a scheming, slick, manipulator with a lousy track record? I suspect Obama would get some sense slapped into him real fast on foreign policy, and Huck would be right at home in the corrupt, earmark loving, D.C. enviorment. Better the naive waif with good intentions who may be teachable than the proven shyster/con man. Either way, it sucks.

a capella on January 7, 2008 at 5:56 PM

Obama.

I felt the same way if it came down to Hillary and J-Mac. Might as well be consistent. If we’re gonna get four years of crap I’d just as soon see the Dems blamed for it, and see the Rs wake the hell up.

daveintexas on January 7, 2008 at 5:57 PM

I got the distinct impression watching Fox News after the debate that Bill Kristol and Fred Barnes weren’t thrilled with the fact that Mitt Romney won the “undecided” voter poll conducted following the debate. I certainly thought Romney won.

I just don’t believe that Huckabee can win against Obama or Hillary. He’s just not up on the issues and he whines and makes childish excuses the moment he’s challenged.

I certainly hope that Romney or Thompson end up being our candidate.

McCain, in my opinion, is anything but a republican and his claim to fame is being a Vietnam War hostage. God bless him for his service to our country but it would seem reasonable to me that if we were going to support a person with a purely military mindset the he’d be the guy that didn’t get captured to be the next Commander-in-Chief.

Gotta go Huckabee.

Hawkins1701 on January 7, 2008 at 6:01 PM

McCain has a lifetime ACU rating of 83
he picks certain issues to pander to left and keep his “maverick” title….granted he’s a pain in the ass

83 is not perfect, but Obama has a 8 ACU rating

http://www.acuratings.org/2006senate.htm

Paultard has a 73 though, and in his case I’d go 3rd party over foreign policy alone.

jp on January 7, 2008 at 6:01 PM

a Republican contingent in the congress can provide restraint on a Democrat in the White House, while “rubber stamping” many questionable moves for a Republican.

Socialist [Obama] vs. blue dog liberal [Huck] Pretty easy choice.

Huckabee/Thompson.

Griz on January 7, 2008 at 6:03 PM

I’d go with Obama as well. If we have to have a train wreck in office, I’d rather it be branded Democrat.

And as a side note, the election of Obama could have a positive impact on our society as a whole. Maybe it’d help the African American community realize that they have as much of an opportunity as anyone to succeed in America. The meme that states that America is an inherrently racist country would be hard to justify if there is a black person in the White House.

krabbas on January 7, 2008 at 6:03 PM

Voted I would stay home but most likely would look for a semi-likeable 3rd party. Huckster keeps touting what a great accomplishment it is that he was 10 year Governor in Arkansas a notoriously Dem state. Someone should tell the idiot that all that says is that his policies are much more in line with Dems and Republicans. I’m starting to feel very bad about ’08.

b4itsover on January 7, 2008 at 6:04 PM

Well if either every talked about the issues versus empty slogans or disingenuous sermons maybe I could find out which one is less liberal. But somehow I think the third party option or staying home thing sounds good. Eventually we will have much freer countries abroad to emigrate to considering the current state of both parties, consisting of socialists across the board.

RushBaby on January 7, 2008 at 6:06 PM

Thinking of Huck as the nominee – you thought the media gave GW Bush a hard time, wait until they start sharpening their knives for a self described “Christian leader.” And when they get hold of his old sermons – and they will, if they don’t have them already – they will twist them beyond all recognition.

One good thing about the probability that we’ll have a Dem president – overnight (literally), the economy will improve and Iraq will be a success.

Laura on January 7, 2008 at 6:08 PM

What’s the difference RushBaby? Seriously, with liberals like Huckabee and McCain to choose from at this point does it really make a difference? Afterall, McCain voted FOR Ruth Bader Ginsberg. But for that, McCain/Kennedy, McCain/Feingold, etc we are going to prop him up on top of the Republican ticket. Republican!!

Zetterson on January 7, 2008 at 6:11 PM

I finally took the plunge and voted for Huckabee because I read Baraka Hussein Obama’s somewhat fictitious autobiography “Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance” and Obama’s a member of the same church the Reverend Barry Lynn is affiliated with, if I am correct.

I am still holding my nose, however. Sigh.

Under the last three scenarios, I only hope Fred, or maybe Mitt, is the VP. If the person nominated can’t beat the Obomination that’s not my fault, and I’ll just have to live with it. I don’t think that is what is motivating people to put Huckabee on the top of the ticket. I think right now that fraud has Republican voters tricked into thinking he’s not as liberal as he is. Huckabee is a lier. His days at the top will end the same way all liers do – getting chased down the street by an angry, torch weilding mob. Its just a matter of time. Hopefully sooner rather then later.

I think if you did a Fred vs Obama poll the results would be 100-0. I think it would be pretty much the same if you did a Romney vs Obama poll as well (100-0). Same goes for Guiliani. Well probably about 98-2 for Guiliani.

Actually, this might be exactly the right answer. Not only will the GOP LOSE the election as they deserve, but the correct message will be sent loud and clear.

“Give us a conservative!”

That message has to be sent, and writing-in Thompson’s name will accomplish that. Especially if Huckabee loses by 8% and 16% of the votes are write-ins for Thompson.

Gregor on January 7, 2008 at 6:29 PM

This is not the time to stand on “principle”, or to wait for a future “true conservative” if Huck is the nominee. The Supreme Court is too important, and I think trumps all in the “Will you vote republican if the ‘wrong’ republican gets nominated” debate

exactly; WAY TO MANY PEOPLE dont understand the power of the supreme court and 2 and more than likely 3 nominations by a democrat would set us in a tale spin.

I have always said that not voting because the Republican candidate is lousy, is actually a vote for the Democrat; usually a bad choice. Any bad Republican is better than the Democrat. However, I now stand corrected. I don’t know if I could in good conscience vote for Huckabee, the slimey Clinton/Carter clone. It’s beyond voting for the better of two bad choices. I think I would have to stay home. If this is the best the Republicans can do, they deserve to lose and we need a third party.

kara26 – how do you propose the GOP not just stop the leftward drift, but return back to our conservative principles? I’m not being snarky, this is a serious question. It is a truism on conservative blogs that rewarding illegal immigration with benefits and amnesty increases illegal immigration. That’s a concept that Republican voters “get.” But… We keep voting in RINOs.

So what’s your plan to get the GOP back to our traditional conservative values?

Laura on January 7, 2008 at 6:36 PM

Sorry for the duplication. Computer problems.

katieanne on January 7, 2008 at 6:36 PM

A three Dem slate (when you add the inevitable Bloomberg) + living in Connecticut’s first congressional district = No reason to for me to bother leaving the house on election day ’08.

If it’s Huckabee, I say we ram Dobson’s own threat right back down his vainglorious, self-righteous throat.

Barry’ll go four and out, the Republicans can do some house cleaning in the interim, and come back in 2012 with a vengence…and an actual Republican at the top of the GOP ticket.

RightWinged, I’m not going to stay home if its Huckabee vs Obama. I’m going to walk through the snow to vote for Obama. I trust him more. I think he’s smarter. And I think he’s more of a class act overall then the Huckster. As I said above, I’ll vote for a left leaning class act democrat then a sleezy, lying, untrustworthy, scumbag fraud of a republican any day of the week.

Really, whats the difference? Ask yourself this, if Huckabee decided tomorrow to switch parties (that should not require a vivid imagination) and change the R infront of his name to a D. We know Huckabee is a lying, pandering, scumbag of a politician. He is as sleezy and Clintonesque as they come. He’s Jimmy Carter with Bill Clinton’s sociopathic scummyness. If the new senario I was looking at was a probable democrat victory in ’08 and Huckabee and Obama battling it out for the top of the Dem ticket, I would be pulling for an Obama victory. At least Obama hasn’t lied to my face. At least Obama hasn’t plunged down to the level of race baiting politics the way Huck has flaunted his religion. I will without doubt vote Obama over Huckabee.

But by all means folks you “teach the GOP a lesson” and make them get back to their routes.

RightWinged on January 7, 2008 at 6:27 PM

People such as you have put us in this position in the first place by making it clear to the GOP that you’ll support whatever loser they throw in your face.

SUCKER!

Keep pleasuring them tool.

Every election they force the person they want down our throats. They’ve spent the last eight years flipping us off on amnesty and border issues. They continually tell you that what you want doesn’t matter, and when election day comes … you routinely step in the booth and place your vote next to whichever name has the little ‘R’ next to it.

Keep on standing tall.

Gregor on January 7, 2008 at 6:44 PM

I think the “stay at home” crowd is missing what’s on the table for the country. I see the following 1) Supreme Court Justice(s), 2) Military, 3) Iran, North Korea, Radical Islam, 4)Immigration. I did not list them in any particular order, I’d say they are all important. I see flaws in all the GOP candidates, but I do see enough that I could rally around one of them in a gerneral election.

I do understand we all have own thoughts on these issues, but I’m willing to chance putting Obama or any lefty in office. just think about the Supreme court with more lefty judges? What about an open door at the borders?

You StayAtHomers better wake up and smell what’s on the table!!!!

cattekc on January 7, 2008 at 6:45 PM

I’ll hold my nose and pull the level for the Huckster. However, 4 years of Obama could be the cure for conservative principles but not sure that it is worth the risk especially with several SCOTUS nominations upcoming for the next POTUS.

azcop on January 7, 2008 at 6:47 PM

The cut-and-run republicans stayed home in ’06′. With this particular scenario it would be my turn to do the same.

DannoJyd on January 7, 2008 at 6:50 PM

Ow! Poked myself in the eye with a dull stick! OK, here’s the deal: Lesser of two weevils–had to go with Huckchuck. The Huckabomb is a socialist but not as much as Obambi (yeah, I know, like being “kinda pregnant”). Huck has some redeeming social value; anti-gun control, pro-life, and born-again border control. However his fiscal and foreign policies (if policies they can be called) bite big time. Between that stick in the eye and the clothes pin pinching my nose, I have to say, this HA poll has not been pleasant. Thanks AP.

second digit on January 7, 2008 at 6:50 PM

What, no write-in? Mickey Mouse would be getting at least one vote if the best the Dems and Repubs can do is Obama and Huckabee.

RightOFLeft on January 7, 2008 at 6:51 PM

I’m still holding out for a Thompson/Hunter ticket. But I’m not holding my breath.

I’m not sure how letting Obama win will get us a better choice in 2012. The same out of touch Republican leadership will just support even more “electable” candidates. And so the downward spiral will continue.

I wish I knew how to return the R part to its conservative roots.

Sgtmack on January 7, 2008 at 6:52 PM

I would follow AP’s lead and write in Fred Thompson. (/Little devil typing from my shoulder)
MoCoM on January 7, 2008 at 6:20 PM
********************************************
Actually, this might be exactly the right answer. Not only will the GOP LOSE the election as they deserve, but the correct message will be sent loud and clear.

“Give us a conservative!”

That message has to be sent, and writing-in Thompson’s name will accomplish that. Especially if Huckabee loses by 8% and 16% of the votes are write-ins for Thompson.
Gregor on January 7, 2008 at 6:29 PM

I typed that 1/2 in jest. In all seriousness, I may write in Fred Thompson if that is the choice. I’d also realize that a very serious confrontation in our country may be coming sooner, rather than later with the type of judges an Obama would nominate. Its not what I hope for, but I think we’ve been much more patient than Thomas Jefferson predicted.

MoCoM on January 7, 2008 at 6:52 PM

Huck is tossing out some red meat for fiscal conservatives, so I’d give him a chance to convince me he means it. But in all likelihood, I’d vote Libertarian. At least that way the Republicans would know why they lost my vote. If we vote for another big-government Republican we’ll just take another step closer to socialism.

And by the way… I can see Romney giving Obama a run for his money. He damaged Huck when he engaged him in the details of his plans. He could do the same to Obama and expose the fact that there’s not much “there” there (instead of shrieking about how you need experience to enact change, like Clinton did). The fact that he’s stiff and awkward can also be interpreted as he’s not a professional politician. And I think it’d be easier for Romney to coopt the message of hope and change than it would be for Obama to position himself as a talented exuctive. I think Fred (for reasons already stated) and Romney would have the best shots.

Spolitics on January 7, 2008 at 6:52 PM

You left the “write-in” option off the poll, so I voted “staying home” since it’d be the same thing.

flipflop on January 7, 2008 at 6:53 PM

You StayAtHomers better wake up and smell what’s on the table!!!!

cattekc on January 7, 2008 at 6:45 PM

I’m sorry cattekc, I beg to differ and I believe it is you who is missing the point. The point is Huckabee isn’t only equally bad. He’s worse then Obama. A Huckabee presidency would most definitely be more dangerous to our country then an Obama presidency. That is why if it comes down to those two I’m voting for Obama.

Zetterson on January 7, 2008 at 6:54 PM

The funeral and the wedding proceedings are premature.

Entelechy on January 7, 2008 at 6:55 PM

In a worst-case scenario, this is what I’d like to see happen.

Obama, Bloomberg and Huckabee split the liberal vote and a new conservative 3rd party sweeps the election.
