Duncan Hunter to make “major announcement” at 2 p.m.; Update: Hunter’s still in

The other “true conservative” in the race bids us a fond adieu within the hour. With Fred staggering into South Carolina, it may well be that first three Republicans out of the pool as primary season heats up are … Tancredo, Hunter, and Thompson. RINOmania!
Even sadder is the fact that Hunter’s carrying such a low percentage that his endorsement almost doesn’t matter — except maybe to Mitt, since that will give him a vote of confidence on immigration from another border-enforcing stalwart. Anyone betting another way?
Update: MM wonders why Hunter never caught fire. Too much anonymity in a field of Giulianis and McCains and not enough charisma in a field with Huckabee, I think. Switch his bankroll with Romney’s and each of them would probably be polling where the other is now.
Update: False alarm. All he wanted to do is criticize ABC and Fox for excluding him from the debates; he’s still in the race, for reasons I’m sure I just don’t know.

The question ought to be, how can Israel prevent Syria and Iran from doing X, Y, or Z to it? We tend to forget how powerful Israel’s military is. The joke is: “A Jew says, there was a war. We won. When do we eat.” Or some such thing.
It is my belief that Israel is shackled by the US; that contrary to the anti-Israel lobby folks, Israel is used by the US and not vice versa. If Israel were allowed to do what was in its best interests and not what is in its best interests as OK’d by the US, it would practically be untouchable by its neighbors.

Furthermore, it has become embarrassing and not a little frightening that big bad Americans feel so desperately threatened by puny countries like Syria and Iran. I mean, give me a break! Even the article today about the Iranian “fast boats” harassing the gigantic US warships. I mean, this is like a Chihuahua harassing a Pit Bull and yet the MSM puts it off as if we were in some sort of danger. Granted, remember the USS Cole and all that. But still … come on, are we that weak?

I agree. Romney made a pro-forma move, let it languish as he left office. I’m not defending that; that’s why he’s my 3rd choice. Romney also showed little common sense when he wasted a year not checking that his landscaping contractor didn’t get rid of illegals after he was first caught – the Boston Globe staked out his home a year later and busted him.
Again, why he’s my 3rd choice. AZ, OK, and TN now have state laws to do this. It should be national. And bust all the employers. And the sanctuary cities. And the sanctuary states. And the sanctuary churches.
No amnesty. No rewards. No in-state tuition. No benefits of any kind. No footnotes. No ifs, ands, or buts. Secure the borders. Illegals have to go home. Period.
If it included a firm “Illegals have to go home. Period.”
I’ll take a second look, but Huck has consistently and fervently argued for compassion for the children and not to “punish” them. It’s not punishment to not give them a discount that is denied to legal residents of adjoining states.
As far as I am concerned, parents and their children have to go home and resume their education in their own country – and not on my dime.
I work for a living – and my PST lunch is over.
It’s been fun.

It is tricky but Huckabee has a history of attracting democrats and African Americans (nearly half) to vote for him. Arkansas is a state where 90% if elected officals are democrats and he managed to get elected twice. Immigration might lessen his appeal to some liberals however I don’t think too many union members, working class whites or African-Americans,who are the people loosing their jobs to illegals, will be too turned off by a tough immigration plan. Why do you consider him a populist? If he runs making abolishing the IRS and corporate taxes, energy indepedence, strong national security, and social issues I don’t think too many conservatives will just stay home and let Hillary or Obama win.

There’s a fatal flaw in your argument. Your argument is based on the current reality that Syria, Iraq, and Iran are third world nations with no nuclear capability.
If Ron Paul had his way, this would drastically change. Do you think these countries have failed to obtain nukes simply because they’re stupid, or do you think it’s because we’ve prevented it by interfering politically and militarily, using organizations such as the CIA and FBI?
Do you really believe Israel will be able to “prevent” the entire middle east from obtaining nukes and other military needs from North Korea and Russia? What about if Pakistan loses control to the radical majority?
You’re not dealing in reality.
Israel continues to exist today simply because the surrounding countries have been prevented from advancing by using methods which Ron Paul wants to eliminate.
Gregor on January 7, 2008 at 3:48 PM
Once again, you might consider the fact that the ONLY reason these countries are considered harmless is BECAUSE of our interference using agencies and tactics that Ron Paul wishes to eliminate.

A US warship is very justified in not taking lightly the existence of a boat with unknown intentions within 200 yards in the Gulf, particularly when that boat is playing brinksmanship games.
Quite frankly, the Navy I once knew would have vaporised those boats. But then, that Navy wouldn’t have had to worry about such things to begin with. So to answer your question…either some Iranian admiral or the crews of those boats thought we were pretty weak, so weak that they could do such things without fear of retribution. And it looks like they were right.
All the shells in the world are meaningless without the will to use them.

This was Hunter’s big middle finger to the media. Hoo-ray!
RobCon on January 7, 2008 at 4:03 PM
He speaks in general emotional rhetoric, much like Democrats. He spoke of our president’s “arrogant bunker mentality.” He once said that immigration opponents are “demagogues and racists”. He stirs up resentment much like John Edwards.

Good for Hunter. Got some media attention & a few folks talking about him again. Unfortunately, it probably won’t last, but it’s good to see that he’s not going down without a fight.
He’s definitely my 1st choice.
Tim on January 7, 2008 at 4:18 PM
Come on Dunc. It’s time to drop out man! You’re starting to remind me of Bill Richardson(albeit a sane and cognizant version) just hanging around hoping for a VP nom.
HaraldHardrada on January 7, 2008 at 4:31 PM
Glad to see that he’s still willing to stick it out. Surprised he has not gotten more recognition.
Could it be that we really are afraid of a true conservative? If not, why have Hunter, Tancredo, and Thompson had such a poor showing? If were just going to go for glitz and showmanship, well that is apparent in both parties top choices.
N4646W on January 7, 2008 at 4:37 PM
This was a bit of a silly stunt. CNN cut away as soon as he announced he was not going to quit. At least he has one delegate. That’s more than some of the other candidates.
Psycheout on January 7, 2008 at 5:07 PM
That should be your first clue.
sleepy-beans on January 7, 2008 at 5:15 PM
As far as public voting records go, Hunter is by far the best on illegal immigration and conservative values as a whole.
That being my number 1 issue, since it encompasses every other issue (national security, infrastructure, schools, jails, health care)besides guns (and Hunter is great on that too) means he’s the easy winner in my personal race. It’s such a joke that the Establishment Republicans dismiss him just because he won’t dance to their tune.

Have you even taken time to read his position papers? May I suggest you go to fred08.com and do so. But in this sound bite world where everyone wants everything in 30 seconds or less, he gives that a whirl and you don’t like that either.
I’m sorry but Huckabee is a joke.
Oink on January 7, 2008 at 6:19 PM
rats… I knew deep down that it would not be a “im leaving the race and endorsing X” statement, and I left a comment to the contrary anyway.
Hunter didn’t catch on because he is dull and his debate performances were seldom more than blah, even if the answers were correct.
I also defy anyone to find a dumber answer any candidate has given to any question than Hunters reasoning that we cant have gays in the military cuz soldiers come from anti-gay households.

I still think if we can put a Hunter Thompson ticket together we would get a strong Bill Murray vote.

Stage three of the kubler-ross model.
csdeven on January 7, 2008 at 7:32 PM
That is a lie. Mitt hired a legitimate firm to mow his lawn and that firm hired the illegal.
csdeven on January 7, 2008 at 7:36 PM
In AZ, only registered R & D can vote in the primaries. I changed my affiliation today from Ind to R solely so that I can vote for Mr. Hunter in the primaries here. I love his ‘never give up’ attitude – we need him!
arizona on January 7, 2008 at 7:39 PM
csdeven is right. I’m a Fredhead, but its not Mitts fault his landscaping people hired illegals. I dont even know if my lawn guy is legal to be quite honest.
NickTx on January 7, 2008 at 7:39 PM
Hunter’s major announcement is that he’s still in?
I’ve got a major announcement as well…I need to take the garbage out before the garbage-man gets here tomorrow.

Fox truly was bush league for excluding Paul and Hunter this past weekend in New Hampshire. Smacks of arrogance indeed.
sanantonian on January 7, 2008 at 8:55 PM
Hmmmm. Very intriguing thought!
sanantonian on January 7, 2008 at 8:56 PM
When are the RINOs going to start dropping out? I’d like to see Huckabee, Rudy and McCain drop out.
Frank DiGiorgio on January 7, 2008 at 1:04 PM
The OPEN BORDERS ZEALOTS have the Wolfpack Media still pulling for them. But there sinking…slowly…but still sinking. I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama sent some of his supporters to vote for McCain. Not surprised at all. Keep workin’, we have a chance to knock them out!!!

What Hunter needs is all those who say they really like him, to get behind him. I can’t understand why so many say they really like him, but can’t support him because others aren’t.
The only thing I can think of is that too many are letting themselves be manipulated by the media, as it is they who determine who gets press and who doesn’t.
Even this announcement gets little press in the media.
If you are as tired as I am of media manipulation and having our choices cherry picked for us, get behind Hunter and build his support. If you don’t like him, then ignore this.
We need to decide based on conservative record, not media popularity.
