Follow up on the Al-Rueter-CNN breaking news with this bit from MSNBC

WASHINGTON – Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats harassed three U.S. Navy warships in the Strait of Hormuz Sunday, in what the U.S. military considers a “significant provocative act.”

Military officials told NBC News that two US Navy destroyers and one frigate were heading into the Persian Gulf through the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz when five armed “fast boats” of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard approached a high speed, darting in and out of the formation.

At one point a radio message from one of the Iranian boats warned, “You are going to blow up within minutes.”

Re the Ron Paul WoW clip….

I can say from personal experience that if there really were a lot of people gathered on that server for a Paul rally then the server would have crashed.

I’ll give it to the Paulians; they are very adept at using the internet to generate hype. But hype is all it is.

Also, welcome all new commenters.

Now can we get a more sophisticated comment system? I suggest being able to reply to commenters under their posts. I also like a soft rating system. Joystiq has both, and I think Hot Air should copy it shamelessly.

CNN said the Iranian vessels came within 200 yards (meters) of the U.S. ships in the strait on Saturday.

A radio transmission from one of the Iranian ships said, “I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes,” CNN reported, citing a U.S. official.

Why the hell didn’t we blow them out of the water? 200 yards is pretty dang close.

Ron Paul the only man that can save the World of Warcraft.

Pretty much everything I know about WoW is from Ace’s occasional referencing posts, but if this wasn’t on a server where you can get killed by other people, it’s not exactly representative of the threats we face in the world is it? Try it on a server were people can attack each other and we’ll see exactly how the RP foreign policy works. My guess is that a lot of people would quickly see the merits of strategic placement of assets and Reagan’s Peace Through Strength.

Spirit of 1776 on January 7, 2008 at 9:26 AM

Fox just confirmed the reports via the Pentagon, who stated our Navy was “very close” to opening fire. I’d say they took the situation very seriously.

O.K. very simple posting instructions for the newbies:

When you desire to highlight a text like I just did above, just select the specific text you want in bold and hit “strong”.

Same way with the other commands, simply select the text with your curser and hit the desired command at the top of text window.

Sorry to be redundant if you already know this stuff.

We still have some commentators who misuse it naively and it makes it hard to read your comments.

Just trying to be helpful.

And don’t be afraid to ask, we’ll gladly help you.

If you’re not sure and want to practice, go into the archives and post a comment with the headline: This is just a test.

No one will mind because they won’t see it and you don’t have to be embarrassed.

Your welcome.

You underestimate the threat. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy is built specifically to attack our fleet and exploit its vulnerabilities.

Our biggest weakness is our difficulty in attacking large number of small ships. Our destroyers and frigates have primary weapon systems designed for sinking large ships rather than boats. In fact, they have very few weapons that can even hit a boat that is close in (closer than 200 yards).

Had a dozen or so boats made it much closer and been intent on attacking, we very well may have lost a ship.

But, saying that, you sound like you know more about our Naval capabilities than this ol’ gal does, so I will bow to your knowledge.
