Video: Luntz focus group raves over Romney, rips Fred to shreds

Lest this post be enlisted by Hugh Hewitt as evidence of Mittmania the way one of MM’s was earlier today, let me answer the question posed by Luntz at the end by stressing that Obama would kill Romney head to head. As phony and constipated as Mitt often seems, Obama is equally confident and authentic. The contrast between them would be fatally stark. Sad to say, it’s probably Huck who would best blunt Barry O’s advantages; if it’s Hillary, Mitt would have a shot.
I’m surprised to see all the animus for Fred, although I guess after snubbing the state it was to be expected. Note well the pointed criticisms of Huckabee’s religious demagoguery. Interesting, and ominous for Huck, to see how far that’s penetrated among the electorate.
Update: MKH agrees with the group about Mitt and disagrees about Fred.

What struck me about this was the unanimity. Definitely the crowd affect at work. Either that or the polls are meaningless.

The NH snub? I disagree. They had the exact proper read on Fred’s performance. It is the reason his has been on a steady fall since he announced.
csdeven on January 6, 2008 at 10:18 PM
I think sometimes Frank kind of leads the people. He never asks those who disagree why they disagree. I guess he is trying to come up with a narrative, but I would like to see what they would say in a secret ballot.

William Amos on January 6, 2008 at 10:19 PM
He isn’t competing in Michigan though, it just depends on how much momentum each candidate has. If McCain wins this one, but Romney wins Michigan, then we’re in decent shape…

I agree that Mitt was the debate winner, but I don’t think Fred did as bad as the focus group suggested. btw I think Mitt could very easily beat Obama (and even more so Hillary) in the general.

Dunno about that. If the electorate want style over substance, you could be right, but it’s a long time till November, and at some point Obama’s gonna have to do better than vague pie in the sky. Mitt isn’t my first choice, but anyone with a brain can see he’s a hundred times more competent and experienced than Obama. Lots of variables in the equation, though.

There probably is a component of Fred blowing off NH in the response. Earlier on Fox, Fred said that he was not focusing on NH and had no expectations to do well. Came off as “who cares?”. But the specific criticism of him was not what he was saying, but how he said it. He needs to crank up some enthusiasm on his part, rather than siting with his hands folded in front of his face and talking blandly about his ideas. Take some vitamins, and keep yer hands on the table when you talk, Fred!
iurockhead on January 6, 2008 at 10:24 PM
About Fred according to focus group member: “He’s got a good thought process but has trouble communicating.”
More proof that regional prejudices govern our feelings about the candidates. IOW, north easterners think southerners are stupid. Mitt is one of them so I wouldn’t take too much out of this other than they like their own.
Bill C on January 6, 2008 at 10:24 PM
Yep, and Cris Wallace just admitted that he directed most of the focus towards McCain, Mitt, and Huck.

heh heh heh I still got your number…
doriangrey on January 6, 2008 at 10:29 PM
Besides Fred’s downward spiral since he announced, why would Wallace give Fred lots of time when he disses the media the way he does? They aren’t his 8ithes and it’s careless of Fred to expect them to be. And Jeri’s attitude on Bill O the other day doesn’t help. It just looks like they sit around complaining about the media to each other.
Fred has the message and instead of being confrontational with them, he should use them to his advantage. I think he’s just being stubborn and cantankerous.
csdeven on January 6, 2008 at 10:29 PM
Mitt’s weaknesses in the primary will turn into strengths in the general. Middle of the road voters will not be interested in who has been pro-life the longest or who was first to be in favor of sealing the border. They will want someone who is not a conservative idealogue.
The best way to counteract the flowery hope talk of Obama is to give real hope through experience in turning around companies and the Olympics, and in keeping taxes down.
pedestrian on January 6, 2008 at 10:29 PM
Mitt Romney is competent. That’s what came across in this debate and why those Republicans went for him.

doriangrey on January 6, 2008 at 10:33 PM
Yet another focus group of “sophisticated voters” who claim to be all about the issues, yet they promptly reveal that they really make their decisions based on style, presentation, and looks rather than issues and substance. Sigh. They just dialed their little hearts our for Mitt–went right off the top of the chart–when he was just ticking off bullet points of generic conservative talking points. When asked why they overwhelmingly liked Romney, as usual they said he “looked” good, “sounded” strong, and “seemed” presidential. That’s what good hair and a smooth speaking voice do for ya, I guess.

NickTx on January 6, 2008 at 10:34 PM
To borrow your line… Dude!
You think Mitt would have no chance against Obambi? For heaven’s sake, it would be the greatest possible differentiation the GOP could put up. One’s an unbelievably accomplished business man who has a long and proven history of being successful in everything he puts his mind to. Obama talks reeeal purty. It would be an election of the adults vs. the adolescents. Good grief. Bring it on.
Most of the country is not nearly in love with BHO as the democrats who are DIEING to be able to nominate anyone but Hillary. In the general, the school boy gets taken to school by Mitt.

A rich white man vs a poor black man yeah will really set a big difference that cant be exploited !
William Amos on January 6, 2008 at 10:36 PM
You got it wrong too. The first part of the segment they were very specific about why the will now support him and not Fred, Huck, or the others. The style responses were in response to why he would beat Obama. They, like all very smart voters, realize the general election is about style and presentation and since that is all Obama has, Mitt is better AND he will decimate him on experience.

I’ll take that matchup between Obama and Romney. The electorate is very polarized as the last 2 elections have proved. The winner either democrat or republican will be the one that energizes their base more, and gets out the vote better. Just as it was last time. I don;t think you can play matchups, becuase the electorre is pretty set in their ways, I dont think their are as many “swing” voters as the press has us beleive.
paulsur on January 6, 2008 at 10:43 PM
The race in New Hampshire has always been between Huck, Romney, and McCain. New Hampshire was never intended to be a hotbed of Fred! supporters.
So, With Frank Luntz, the telemarketing survey guy, conducts his focus group, comprised of New Hampshire people, what do you think they are going to say about Fred!
Fred! has no interest in campaigning there so they people of New Hampshire feel slighted.

Sorry AP, but if Huck is the nominee, I’ll either sit out or vote Democrat. I’d vote for Mitt, Rudy, Fred, and even McCain over any Dem. While Mitt (or Rudy) may lose those who love the baby Jesus, I suspect that given the choice, many will lose their single issue myopia and vote for a conservative over a liberal. Huck’s populism won’t win a single state.

I’m waiting to see if Iowa was alone in showing that they want some serious change in politics. If it’s a national trend then we’re going to suffer for running a bunch of old white guys spitting out old white guy ideas. They really do need to know that no matter how much they chant that the economy is so freaking great it isn’t making headway with those whose income has been flat for years while watching jobs go away and costs go up. Sure it’s great for those who make their money investing in huge corporations, taking payoffs from fat lobbyists as supposed public servants, or owning companies who pay Chinese 25 cents a day as opposed to Americans at 17 bucks an hour but it ain’t great for the rest of us voters.
That’s exactly why even though their social programs suck and taxes will go up a lot of folks are going to vote for Obama or Edwards in 2008. Just like in 2006, people are tired of the big business Republicans spending money and ignoring the people.
It doesn’t matter that the DEMs are exactly as bad if not worse at the same thing. They, at least, act like they’re for the average guy or gal and anymore perception is absolutely everything.
Remember, it don’t matter what flies here on HA or among those who really follow politics. We’re an incredibly tiny part of those who vote.
Buzzy on January 6, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Heh, I see a new meter has surfaced. When a certain candidate is supposedly up, a certain commenter is snooty, and the reverse is true too.
Entelechy on January 6, 2008 at 11:02 PM
Although I think Romney is one of the two best, in terms of style, to go up against Obama (the other being Giuliani), Romney against Obama largely neutralizes one of the GOPs biggest strengths – Obama’s complete cluelessness and lack of experience in national security.
Romney isn’t clueless, but I think Rudy would be better able to (properly) focus the general election on national security, and Obama’s tremendous weakness in that area, to our great advantage.
LagunaDave on January 6, 2008 at 11:02 PM
Just don’t stick your tongue out – that last picture of Dean on Druge…puke-inducing.
p.s. a while ago, here on HA, we had a thing going to give feedback to his establishment. Since then he sends me e-mails. With each I’m so tempted to write back a certain profanity (yes, I can) – but I’m smart enough to wait until the Nov. election is over.
Entelechy on January 6, 2008 at 11:06 PM
I agree. I have hoped the last few elections that a viable Republican woman or minority candidate would rise to the top, but none have yet. I just love it when we’re first on that kind of thing. I found it amusing and disgusting how the Dems and African American groups put down highly-placed Republican appointees like Clarence Thomas, Powell and Rice as “Uncle Toms” or “not really black” because they were conservative or appointed by Republicans. It would have been nice to have the first black president come from us. Might still happen, I guess, but it’s looking an awful lot like Obama’s on an unstoppable roll at this point.
Anyway, maybe the old white guy we choose will pick a dynamic young female and/or minority running mate. That would be interesting. JC Watts, perhaps?
It’s seeming like we’ll almost have to have a woman or minority in the VP slot since two rich old white guys would have to walk such a tightrope so as not to come across in any way, at any time, of being racist or sexist. There will be people hanging on every word and gesture, just waiting for it–they will fabricate discrimination if they have to. Having a woman or minority on the ticket might keep that from happening.

The “messiah” is a mile wide and an inch deep. The guy needed a newspaper to conduct a hit job on the incumbent (digging up and publicizing details in his divorce records that should have been private) to even get the job he has now. For all purposes, he ran unopposed for his Senate spot. Now, truth be told, I will always consider him my unintentional hero if he takes out the Hilderbeast before the general. But he simply will not “mesmerize” non-haters like he has the easily impressed dims. Romney would pwn him in debates.

Mitt did that in Massachusetts. He dumped a really solid conservative leading Lt Gov. candidate and picked a seriously hot looking nobody as his running mate. That’s why there is now a Democrat Governer in Mass. At least he’s played the game and knows the numbers. His opponent was also a screeching 4th generation pol whose was claiming to be an outsider, so he knows how to run against Hillary, if she is still around.

Obama/Edwards terrifies me, especially with Obama’s newfound dominance in the polls against all challengers. Romney/Thompson sounds good, and I think Thompson may go for VP. In one debate he almost sounded like he was auditioning for it (The YouTube debate, when asked a question by the Dick Cheney cartoon.) Sounds good to me. Fair enough, but I suspect that his position on the 2nd Amendment will earn him the hearty approval of the NRA in a general election against either the Pantsuit or Osama; don’t you think?
As for his position (”nationalized healthcare”) on health care, I don’t know much. The site ontheissues.org addresses the Massachusetts healthcare bill and compares it to other proposed legislation, especially Hillarycare and Obama’s plan, and says it is similar. They also confirm that Romney has never proposed a nationwide plan, but has suggested that the model used in Mass should be effective for any state to work off of.
At least that’s what I think they said.
muyoso, I think your biggest beef with Romney might be that the Ron Paul foreign policy that you seek would be much more in line with Hillary or Obama.

My BIGGEST beef with Romney is the 2nd Amendment Issue. Looking at my gun cabinet as I type this, he wants to ban about 2/3’s of what I own, because they are “weapons of unusual lethality”. I don’t purport to know the NRA as well as I should, but I cannot see how they could endorse someone who is for the assault weapons ban. I have a feeling they would simply not endorse anyone.

Just people who were pissed that their candidate was excluded from a debate by a corporation, when several candidates in the debate have done worse and are projected to do worse in the very primary the debate was being held for. Are the Republicans really that afraid of the Socialist-Democrat Party? Yes, of course. So far, this year you’ll be able to count on one hand the number of Americans earning less than $100,000 a year who’ll be voting Republican on any platform other than abortion. Sad deal.
