Open thread: You know what we need? Another debate

8 p.m. ET on Fox News. The Paulnut has been put out to pasture for this one, depriving America of yet another opportunity for the other candidates to score hawkish points at his expense. Romney vs. McCain should be the main event; Mitt will be tempted to toss a few hastily written one-liners his way just to prove that he can scrap when he has to, but he should reconsider. McCain’s stand-up performance last night seems to have bombed and may bode ill for Tuesday given his surprisingly dwindling lead.

Last night’s debate thread is the biggest we’ve ever had on HA (even bigger than the defeat of the amnesty bill last summer, if you can believe it) so continue to sound off below — but try not to break the site. While you wait, enjoy this helpful NYT scorecard comparing the world’s richest nanny to the various candidates on both sides. Verdict: “If you want to place him in the spectrum of American politics, he’s a liberal Democrat on all the major litmus test issues, and he’s a liberal Democrat on taxing and spending. I don’t see the product differentiation, except for the $4 billion bank account and the aura of the philosopher-king.”

Watch this, too. The Green Mountain Politics concludes, on the basis of what evidence I surely don’t know, that the malfeasors are Romney staffers. Given the fact that there are two cameramen taping them while they perform, isn’t the much sounder assumption that it’s a false flag operation? Click the image to watch.

Huck for Prison warden !

William Amos on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Wait, Huck wants to close down Guantanamo because it’s too nice? And Fred’s exactly right about habeas corpus…

Vizzini on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

That’s it. No more adult beverages for you. Prune juice only from now on.

RushBaby on January 6, 2008 at 8:55 PM

csdeven on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Huckabee looked like he didn’t even know where he was when Fred! hit him with the habeas corpus argument

John_Locke on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Holy crap Huck spun that beautifully… he wants to close Guantanamo so they don’t have it so good. Huckabee voodoo.

joewm315 on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Huck went there to see if there were any prisoners he could pardon. Tell the truth now.

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Huck: “I visited every prison in my state.”

Probably to see if he missed anybody who wanted to get out…

LagunaDave on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Huck’s been to lots of prisons.
Uh Oh, Fred’s going after him. Nicely done, too.

NellE on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Eat him alive FRED!

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Huck “visited very prison in my state”… to go on a pardoning tour.

Hollowpoint on January 6, 2008 at 8:55 PM

LOL dang it now I need a paper towel.

RushBaby on January 6, 2008 at 8:57 PM

And now comes the Illegal Immigration Crisis. Let’s hear about the Z-Visa NOT being AMNESTY.

DfDeportation on January 6, 2008 at 8:57 PM

I like Rudy. He was a good mayor, and he has management skills.

joewm315 on January 6, 2008 at 8:33 PM

Yup, Kerik and Chertoff would sure agree.

MB4 on January 6, 2008 at 8:57 PM

John_Locke on January 6, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Huck: Habeas whobee-whatee??

csdeven on January 6, 2008 at 8:57 PM

I hope my home state of South Carolina is paying attention!

SouthernGent on January 6, 2008 at 8:57 PM

lan astaslem on January 6, 2008 at 8:57 PM

Ohhhhh Immagration time!!!!!!

conservnut on January 6, 2008 at 8:57 PM

McCain is right about bin Laden. He talked like this before the surge to. I think he is on to something here.

bnelson44 on January 6, 2008 at 8:57 PM

Watch McCain squirm.

csdeven on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Freds comment to Mitt about Kennedy,OUCH!

canopfor on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

McCain blinks very fast when he lies.

lan astaslem on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

OH!

OHHH!

Just linked Romney with Kennedy.

BBBBBBUTTSLAMMED!!!!

MadisonConservative on January 6, 2008 at 8:55 PM

doriangrey on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Here we go on immigration. This is gonna be GOOD.

RushBaby on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Fred- John Do they get to stay in the country?

abinitioadinfinitum on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

lair liar pants on fire

Mojack420 on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

McVain. Blinking like a strobe light.

wccawa on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Yeah McCain, you never supported amnesty and were so eager to build that wall. Riiiiight.

Hollowpoint on January 6, 2008 at 8:59 PM

Dude. Fred definitely needs to kick the mess out of them. There’s an opening wide enough to drive a truck through.

But he’ll probably miss another golden opportunity

John_Locke on January 6, 2008 at 8:59 PM

McCain blinks very fast when he lies.

lan astaslem on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Was just thinking that too. Tuesday on O’R.

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2008 at 8:59 PM

MB4 on January 6, 2008 at 8:57 PM

Whoah, lemme clarify Huckabee style. I’m not voting for him, but he did a good job in New York. What works in New York is not neccesarily the best for the country.

joewm315 on January 6, 2008 at 8:59 PM

McCain goes for the emotional approach to immigration and draws the troops in. Desperate measures.

Mallard T. Drake on January 6, 2008 at 8:59 PM

Why the heck don’t you interrupt John like you did Rudy last night on immigration Fred?!

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2008 at 9:00 PM

PLEASE someone ask McCain WHY the Senate voted to defund the FENCE this week!!!!! Score some points Fred! or someone!

CrimsonFisted on January 6, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Mitt’s just picked up Fred!’s line from last night

John_Locke on January 6, 2008 at 9:00 PM

McCain still doesn’t get it. He’s saying border first, amnesty later. Should be border first, amnesty NEVER.

P. James Moriarty on January 6, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Freds comment about radical muslims,at least he’s honest,
and it’s the truth political correcters don’t want uttered!

canopfor on January 6, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Freds comment to Mitt about Kennedy,OUCH!
canopfor on January 6, 2008 at 8:58 PM

It had no context and means nothing. Fred uses “Kennedy” the way he used “mandate”. It’s an attempt at debate through emotional buzzwords. Never effective.

csdeven on January 6, 2008 at 9:00 PM

McCain blew EVERY word of that.

RushBaby on January 6, 2008 at 9:01 PM

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Because they’re friends.

It’s his ONE WEAKNESS.

John_Locke on January 6, 2008 at 9:01 PM

Why the heck don’t you interrupt John like you did Rudy last night on immigration Fred?!

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2008 at 9:00 PM

He won’t. Loyalty is an admirable trait, I suppose, but McCain deserves to be called on this.

joewm315 on January 6, 2008 at 9:01 PM

McCain says the Z-Visa would be earned! You’d have to have a job! How the hell does the Illegal Alien get a job?

DfDeportation on January 6, 2008 at 9:01 PM

McCain is quite flustered.

csdeven on January 6, 2008 at 9:01 PM

McCain is starting to get aggravated! lol

broker1 on January 6, 2008 at 9:01 PM

McCain has not and will never learn. Rewarding bad behavior will only lead to more bad behavior.

fourstringfuror on January 6, 2008 at 9:01 PM

Uh-oh…McCain is getting grumpy!

SouthernGent on January 6, 2008 at 9:01 PM

McCain…Shut up about illegal immigration…Nobody believe a word you say…

doriangrey on January 6, 2008 at 9:02 PM

McCain does not look “presidential.” Reminds me of a hamster.

Mallard T. Drake on January 6, 2008 at 9:02 PM

yeah they pay a fine for breaking the law in the first place but you still get kicked to the back of the line and if you don’t pay the fine you never get to come back .

Mojack420 on January 6, 2008 at 9:02 PM

PLEASE someone ask McCain WHY the Senate voted to defund the FENCE this week!!!!! Score some points Fred! or someone!

CrimsonFisted on January 6, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Agreed, that needs to be brought up, pronto.

joewm315 on January 6, 2008 at 9:02 PM

Mocking tone does NOT become you, McCain.

RushBaby on January 6, 2008 at 9:02 PM

McCain says we need to get beyond this. I’m sure he feels that way. More like forgeet about it!!!

DfDeportation on January 6, 2008 at 9:02 PM

Mit with that immigration statement is close to getting MY vote!!!!!

-Wasteland man.

WastelandMan on January 6, 2008 at 9:03 PM

SECOND LOOK AT THE HAMSTER!

wccawa on January 6, 2008 at 9:03 PM

It’s his ONE WEAKNESS.

One of his weaknesses. Kind of hypocritical.

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2008 at 9:03 PM

I wish Huckster lived in the shadows

conservnut on January 6, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Fred. It is your duty as an American to KILL HUCK.

John_Locke on January 6, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Awww… Huck feels bad for those poor illegals “living in the shadows”.

Hollowpoint on January 6, 2008 at 9:03 PM

where are these shadows?
or is it these idiots just refuse to open their eyes.

Mojack420 on January 6, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Mccain just said it would be “unfortunate” to deport illegals. He quickly covered, though.

SouthernGent on January 6, 2008 at 9:03 PM

no special pathway thank you MITT!

WastelandMan on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

The Huckster stand up for the Anchor Babies….don’t punish a child for what the parent did. Let the rapists and murderers out o parole tooooooo….

DfDeportation on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Holy crap Huck is losing it!

broker1 on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Huck is afraid to engage Mitt.

csdeven on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Huck is screwing up big time!

conservnut on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

huck does a blowout

allrsn on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Whoa. Huck is opening up a can of whoop ass for himself.

wccawa on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Mitt is soooo right about illegal immigration…

doriangrey on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Mitt and Huck throwdown? Imagine how tough Huck would be with terrorists. /s

Mallard T. Drake on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Oh Huck… geez. Yes, what about the children?

Vizzini on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

McCain is about to lose it like Hillary did last night.

abinitioadinfinitum on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

LOL. Now Huck won’t even talk to Mitt. What a wuss.

Hollowpoint on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

I think Huck just pi$$ed himself.

John_Locke on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

The parents will take their kids back? Not Elvira Arellano!!!

DfDeportation on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Huck is petty. I mean, he is genuinely petty.

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2008 at 9:05 PM

huck does a blowout

allrsn on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

He most certainly did. He sounded like a child.

Connie on January 6, 2008 at 9:05 PM

How do make people illegals go home?

It’s unenforceable. No one mentions that point.

Zach on January 6, 2008 at 9:05 PM

Huck is kind of mad about immigration.
Can’t blame him. It’s hard for governors.

NellE on January 6, 2008 at 9:05 PM

oh,okay.
csdeven, sorry if I’m not responding quicker,I have to loose the link and comment, then get fox back on,this is like watching tv in the back yard, then running into the house to comment, sorry guys!

canopfor on January 6, 2008 at 9:06 PM

Fred. It is your duty as an American to KILL HUCK.

John_Locke on January 6, 2008 at 9:03 PM

I’m Fred Thompson and I approve this message…

doriangrey on January 6, 2008 at 9:06 PM

What is he saying? The parents could leave their senior in high school there?

John_Locke on January 6, 2008 at 9:06 PM

Huck is dead. Long live Huck.

wccawa on January 6, 2008 at 9:06 PM

I think Mit and Huck look like fools when they take jabs at each other. There is only one presidential man here.

Fredalanche!©

TheSitRep on January 6, 2008 at 9:06 PM

Reagan signed on the condition that the border would be sealed you dunce.

Zach on January 6, 2008 at 9:06 PM

The parents will take their kids back? Not Elvira Arellano!!!

DfDeportation on January 6, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Good one.

RushBaby on January 6, 2008 at 9:07 PM

Huck is a Reagan conservative after all re: immigration???

Mallard T. Drake on January 6, 2008 at 9:07 PM

The people who are coming to “escape poverty” are the ones who could be making a difference in their home country. Instead they give up and leave.

Connie on January 6, 2008 at 9:07 PM

Damit Huck the US cant take care economically of the entire world. Let people stay in their home countries and try to make it better we drain those nations of good people

William Amos on January 6, 2008 at 9:07 PM

Interesting that none of them so far have offered to severely fine companies that hire illegals.

SouthernGent on January 6, 2008 at 9:07 PM

Does Rudy explanation square with reality? It sounds good, but isn’t it still encouraging sanctuary cities?

csdeven on January 6, 2008 at 9:07 PM

Ronnie made a mistake. Stop dragging him into this to cover yours.

Spirit of 1776 on January 6, 2008 at 9:07 PM

that looked bad HUCK real bad….

WastelandMan on January 6, 2008 at 9:08 PM

Is guiliani praying putting his hands together?

And they are wrong, Reagan agreed to that if the Dems promised to secure the border and they didnt do it.

Lesson learned

broker1 on January 6, 2008 at 9:08 PM

Huck just said Ronald Reagan made mistakes.

Fork. Stick.
Curb. Kick.

RushBaby on January 6, 2008 at 9:08 PM

Huck: sending people back is punishing them. But not when I do it!
