Open thread: You know what we need? Another debate

8 p.m. ET on Fox News. The Paulnut has been put out to pasture for this one, depriving America of yet another opportunity for the other candidates to score hawkish points at his expense. Romney vs. McCain should be the main event; Mitt will be tempted to toss a few hastily written one-liners his way just to prove that he can scrap when he has to, but he should reconsider. McCain’s stand-up performance last night seems to have bombed and may bode ill for Tuesday given his surprisingly dwindling lead.

Last night’s debate thread is the biggest we’ve ever had on HA (even bigger than the defeat of the amnesty bill last summer, if you can believe it) so continue to sound off below — but try not to break the site. While you wait, enjoy this helpful NYT scorecard comparing the world’s richest nanny to the various candidates on both sides. Verdict: “If you want to place him in the spectrum of American politics, he’s a liberal Democrat on all the major litmus test issues, and he’s a liberal Democrat on taxing and spending. I don’t see the product differentiation, except for the $4 billion bank account and the aura of the philosopher-king.”

Watch this, too. The Green Mountain Politics concludes, on the basis of what evidence I surely don’t know, that the malfeasors are Romney staffers. Given the fact that there are two cameramen taping them while they perform, isn’t the much sounder assumption that it’s a false flag operation? Click the image to watch.

Dick Morris just smacked down Colmes. There’s nothing I enjoy more than seeing Colmes get called on his BS.

fourstringfuror on January 6, 2008 at 10:26 PM

Why? He’s got lots of money.

Entelechy on January 6, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Because Michael has talked us into supporting conservative candidates;)

Just one reason c/b that he jumped in so late…just a guess.

Why don’t we jump over to a Bryan thread, and continue? It sure will be quicker to post. Say the word.

VIGGO MORTENSEN SUPPORTS KUCINICH?!?! NO!!!!!!!!!!

I’m late, but approaching 1000 comments and if I were AP, I’d be cracking open another beer or at least champaign. Savor the moment my allusive friend. This Election year may be your glory, or gravy train.

Another debate, yes.

Entelechy,
The reason I make the statement that tolerance is the crutch of the weak, is because, the very essence of tolerance is to tolerate abhorrent behavior, weakness, or lies.
No one ever says or thinks. I cannot tolerate the truth. No, it is only wicked things or weak things that we tolerate. I will give you an example, no one would ever say, how can we tolerate this fair and benevolent government , for that doesn’t need to be tolerated. It just needs to be appreciated. But someone could say, how can we tolerate this Hugo Chavez regime? And you would know what they meant.
So, let us not be tolerant.

TheSitRep on January 6, 2008 at 10:49 PM

The best quote of the debate for me was McCain’s quote when referring to his experience he said.
“It’s my time deprived of America, when I really grew to love her.”

I have never heard him say that, maybe he uses it a lot but, dang it is a powerful statement.

doriangrey on January 6, 2008 at 10:55 PM

eh, I question Dick Morris sometimes. He’s the one saying Hillary is so smart etc. Well, we’re seeing she isnt, so what HIS deal?

Her comment on Putin today are just ridiculous. She is either trying to look like she hates Communism, or is stupid as hell to jab the leader of a country we need to get along with. She’s a piece of work I tell ya.

johnnyU on January 6, 2008 at 10:56 PM

TheSitRep, I get your reply. Why do we tolerate that…p….r…MadisonC, help!!!

Ok, out of here – this is too slow. I’m not that patient.

Romneygeddon!

krabbas on January 6, 2008 at 11:00 PM

The New Hampshirites also agreed that while Fred was good on policy, he didn’t set them on fire. “I just want to shake and wake him up,” one guy said. That’s a regular citizen saying that, ok? Not the Evil Conspiratorial Media.

Yea but if you’ve been on planet earth for the last 4 weeks, that’s ALL YOU HAVE HEARD from the MSM about Fred. Of course some people will follow that suggestion.

edgehead on January 6, 2008 at 11:04 PM

OK so I’m thinking Obama-Edwards vs Romney-Thompson. Eh?

Seixon on January 6, 2008 at 11:13 PM

After 8 years of Bush it’s nice that ALL the candidates can at least talk.

Rule # 1 – Dick Morris is never right, his predictions never pan out.

Mayor Bloomberg is in Oklahoma, wonder what this all means?

Bloomberg is an OPEN BORDERS ZEALOT. They need to get him in becasue the other three on the Republican side are starting to sink. What will the Wolfpack Media do then?

Fred Thompsons answer to the illegal immigrant issue had Huck mesmerized like a fith grader in civics class. BWAHAHAHAAAAAAA…….

Reposted from other thread:

I watched it late on TiVo so I’m a little late to the game on this, but some of my thoughts:

Romney was in a class of his own tonight. Some of you are calling him a RINO? No one on that stage tonight came close to competently and powerfully articulating consertatism as he did. And I find it interesting that when it is completely issues oriented he so obviously outclasses everyone else there–it’s no wonder last night the others resorted to personal attacks.

But I sit here almost aghast at some of these Fredheads in denial about so much (though credit to those who admit Romney was great tonight). While Thompson fumbled and bumbled his way with every other response, Romney was in total command, RIGHT on all the issues, and made a clear contrast between him and the real RINOs sitting left and right of him.

And yet, the one guy in position to stop Huckabee and McCain–the one guy who not only is a conservative (and articulates it better than anyone) but has the most formidable campaign–you continue to overlook and pledge your support for a candidate who has virtually no chance of winning. I just don’t get it.

Anyway, rating the performances tonight:

1-Romney; head and shoulders above the rest, helped himself tremendously
2-McCain; obviously he was told to tone it down, and he did so, and didn’t hurt himself
3-Rudy; almost irrelevant at times but was okay
4-Thompson; was a non factor mostly, and half the time he did get was long-winded and almost incoherent
5-Huckabee; was totally PWNED by Romney early on and it never got better…he’s a pretender

Patriot33 on January 7, 2008 at 3:47 AM

The koolaide is too sweet.

Huckabee; was totally PWNED by Romney early on and it never got better…he’s a pretender
Patriot33 on January 7, 2008 at 3:47 AM

He’s worse. He’s a charlatan and a huckster. And he finally….. got taken down.

Huckabee doesn’t fire his campaign manager who makes “unchristian” statements like, “I’d like to knock out Romney’s teeth” even though he claims to be the Christian candidate.

Hucksters like Huckaschmuck are what give “Christianity” a bad name. And so called true believers everywhere should vehemently condemn the scheister.

Mike Huckabee is an absolutely despicable example of decency and common sense, and, it grieves my soul to no end to see him get so much acceptance and press for leading the ignoramus sheep to slaughter.

Because if Mike were to get the nomination, he and his supporters will be eaten alive in the general election.

MIKE HUCKSTER IS THE EPITOME OF THE SCUM OF THE EARTH.

(I put that in caps because I really believe it, and, yes I am shouting it from the rooftop).

If Christians believe that their faith is of value to the inhabitants of the earth then they have to denounce fakes like Mike Huckabee.

And you just watch, Mike Huckabee will have a “conversion” experience before this is all over, claiming that now, he is a real Christian and is going to behave like one.

I’ve seen his type so many times I will throw up if I go on. So I will quit for now.

This saga isn’t over yet.

Let me play a role here:
“JustinHiggins at 7:14 PM you can take your blog site and shove it.”

Now see that was unchristian wasn’t it?

Don’t worry Justin I was just playing a role. You’re an alright guy, you’re just a control freak.

See how it’s done?

Mcguyver on January 7, 2008 at 9:23 AM

I have to say I loved the way Fred! schooled Huckabee about the G>Bay prisoners! (Huckabee can’t seriously think these prisoners would not get rights and representation if they were in Levinworth!!?? John Edwards would probably drop out and represent them all!)I thought for a moment that Fred! was going to come out and ask Huck if he was really that stupid!

kcd on January 7, 2008 at 11:47 AM

Mitt cannot win in Nov. Why?
1.) he will get the John Kerry filp flopper treatment and it will stick;

2.) Anybody who saw Mitt the next morning post Iowa could clearly see that this guy has very thin skin and that he will project an aura of arrogance

3. One of his national security advisers is Coffer Black who was one of primay people responsible for the foul up and pro-Saudi views at the CIA pre-911 and post 911. His judgments on the Islamist issues are going to pro-Saudi et al. He will continue our sucking up to the Islamists in the Middle East as Pres Bush is doing now with Abbas and Fatah

4. This guy just said that in the first 90 days he will beging some new program of expelling illegals. Right or wrong, this does not sound like a reasoned judgment and it will kill any hope we have with Hispanic voters.

georgealbert on January 7, 2008 at 12:43 PM

I don’t think Mitt would countenance such work but it better than the Democrat SOP of having the spawn of Dem operatives going out and disabling campaign vans or invading the offices of opponents.
