Open thread: Hey, how does three and a half hours of debate on a Saturday night sound?

posted at 6:00 pm on January 5, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

The fun begins at 7 p.m. ET on ABC. I believe it’s the GOP up first followed by the Hillary-Obama death match at around 8:30, so if you want to catch the Republicans and then switch to Jags-Steelers, you won’t miss much of either. Fred may go after Huck to try to start peeling away evangelical fencesitters in South Carolina; everyone else will be gunning for Mitt, with the exchanges between him and St. John promising plenty of acid highlights later.

Sound off in the comments and please pass along tips about video-worthy moments. In the meantime, for your reading pleasure, here’s (a) Bob Novak whispering that it was Mitt who was behind the Fred dropout rumors last week, (b) Slublog analyzing Huckamania, and (c) word from New Hampshire that the state GOP has dropped out of the debate tomorrow night due to Fox’s Ron Paul snub. With Paul bringing out independents and various donation-happy kooks for the primary, I guess they had no choice but to go to bat for him.

Update (Bryan): You may already know this, but if you want to keep track of the game while you’re watching the debate, hit the NFL’s site and click on the game score and you’ll get a page that’s updated every few seconds. Washington just took the lead as I was writing this update.

Oh speak, Obama, great prophet — ‘I’M ALL EARS !!!

stenwin77 on January 5, 2008 at 9:08 PM

How about Russia, Mr Obama…should we strike them?

NickTx on January 5, 2008 at 9:08 PM

Hillary needs Synthoid for those ankles, I think she has a yet to be diagnosed thyroid problem – hypo.

AprilOrit on January 5, 2008 at 9:08 PM

Oh, you go John…you brave, tough, serious….barf

RJS2 on January 5, 2008 at 9:08 PM

CrimsonFisted, still here?

Spirit of 1776 on January 5, 2008 at 9:08 PM

I always thought Charlie Gibson was the most fair anchor of the MSM. I was pleased to hear he was the debate moderator.

JustTruth101 on January 5, 2008 at 9:09 PM

These guys are sooooo stupid and soooo boring.

They just showed Elizabeth Edwards, poor thing, she really doesn’t look too good. She’s had a pretty rough year.

stenwin77 on January 5, 2008 at 9:09 PM

John Edwards: Pretty Boy, beautiful mind.

The Ritz on January 5, 2008 at 9:09 PM

when Silky says “go after” Osama, he means sue him, right?

trubble on January 5, 2008 at 9:10 PM

What’s with panning to the families? Why not show general audience?

rosewaning on January 5, 2008 at 9:10 PM

WHo was the hottie next to Edwards wife?

muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 9:10 PM

John Edwards: I ‘as President’ will give up immediately and give the US to whomever asks the nicest.

tshell on January 5, 2008 at 9:10 PM

John Edwards has really aged – a ton. Out of all of them Bill Richardson is the most qualified? Is this correct?

AprilOrit on January 5, 2008 at 9:10 PM

Oh Gawd, rid the world of nukes, 1960’s leftism

conservnut on January 5, 2008 at 9:10 PM

I was for Huck but I may now be moving toward Fred actually.

AprilOrit on January 5, 2008 at 9:06 PM

I’m pushing my parents that way, or into an old folks home just while we vote. :)

abinitioadinfinitum on January 5, 2008 at 9:10 PM

I agree with with most of the post analysis so far. McCain sounded too old, crotchety, and bitter. Fred has definitely jumped into my top 2 with Romney. I could live with Guiliani and I guess Hucklebee as well if they win the nomination.

Most definitely better than the Democrat options!

Ballistic on January 5, 2008 at 9:10 PM

Hey it’s Horatio Sanz!

Mother of Silkys lovechild?

NickTx on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

Silky want to go for broke on Nuclear proliferation,
but surrender in Irag!

canopfor on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

HAHA.

Ask him to step aside. What is this, like a baseball game where we can bring in a pinch hitter?

muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

Yes, ask the leader of Pakistan to step aside, good idea, who gets the nukes?

RJS2 on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

Oh Gawd, rid the world of nukes, 1960’s leftism

conservnut on January 5, 2008 at 9:10 PM

This way only the Iranians will have them. Then they won’t feel threatened by us, and they’ll be nice to us. Problem Solved.

trubble on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

What world is Bill Richardson living in?

Musharraf is the worst of all possible worlds in Pakistan?

LagunaDave on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

rosewaning on January 5, 2008 at 9:06 PM

Nice! I’m down.

Charlie Gibson is kicking butt. Best moderator thus far on the campaign circuit.

joewm315 on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

Here we go:

Hope
Change
“This Administration”
FDR
Comparison of GHWB and GWB
“not socialism”
Bill (as in Clinton)
Faux southern accent
cackle
two americas
unite (3 shots)
dream

rosewaning on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

Silky’s going to send us back to disarmament days? Unbelievable.

When nukes are outlawed, only outlaws will have nukes.

Good thinking, Silky.

petefrt on January 5, 2008 at 9:12 PM

rosewaning on January 5, 2008 at 9:06 PM

I’m loaded just looking at that list.

abinitioadinfinitum on January 5, 2008 at 9:12 PM

Bill: “I have no hope of winning so I just would like this time to bring up options that are impossible.”

tshell on January 5, 2008 at 9:12 PM

You Tube Clip supporting: McCain sticks to to Romney that he formally thought McCain’s immigration plan was “reasonable.”

bnelson44 on January 5, 2008 at 9:12 PM

Richardson is a coward

Beto Ochoa on January 5, 2008 at 9:12 PM

This actionable intel questions is a gimme. And Richards just blew it.

meandchi on January 5, 2008 at 9:12 PM

@ NickTx on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

must be, because I doubt his wife would have the appropriate genes of good looks to pass that kind of beauty on to a child.

muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 9:12 PM

Obama’s Pakistan ploy is getting more interesting by the minute.

petefrt on January 5, 2008 at 9:13 PM

Richardson, “ask him to step aside.” Oh crap, you mean we could have just asked people to stop doing bad stuff and they would. WOW, how embarassing that we’ve spent so much time kickin’ ass with our military when it’s so unnecessary.

The Ritz on January 5, 2008 at 9:13 PM

rosewaning on January 5, 2008 at 9:11 PM

NickTx on January 5, 2008 at 9:13 PM

Mojack420 on January 5, 2008 at 9:13 PM

Everyone hold on to their ears, the cackling is near.

muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 9:13 PM

They just showed Elizabeth Edwards, poor thing, she really doesn’t look too good. She’s had a pretty rough year.

stenwin77 on January 5, 2008 at 9:09 PM

Yeah, and her husband is living on the road trying to be the President. Disgusting.
Actually, she probably makes him just so he won’t come home. Of course you know , Republicans scare her.

SouthernPride on January 5, 2008 at 9:13 PM

We didn’t make the commitment when we had the chance…uh…hello Hillary, but didn’t Bill have a couple of chances?

RJS2 on January 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

What in tarnation did cackles cankles just say?

infidel on January 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Just how are we going to get more NATO troops?

bnelson44 on January 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

WTF is she talking about regarding “us” missing UBL??????

MsUnderestimated on January 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Her daughter had a look on her face like “WTF is my mom saying”

muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Chelsea looks worried.

She should. Her mom’s an idiot.

techno_barbarian on January 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

stenwin77 on January 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

LagunaDave on January 5, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Agreed.

I can’t believe how off-base Stephanopolous was with his analysis.

Oh wait, wasn’t he in the Clinton administration? Praise Huck, no matter how little he deserved it!

Buy Danish on January 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

how may times can you use “action” in one sentence?

tshell on January 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Hillary,we had actionable intelligence, and sent in some
missiles,nothing but re-visionist history–ConHillary style!

canopfor on January 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

As far as “we” know…wow, she’s sounding like inside baseball no?

RJS2 on January 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Hil’s buying into Obama’s Pakistan attack? She says, just alert India?

petefrt on January 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

“And I promise that if Sudan captures Osama Bin Laden and offers him to either me or my husband, I will take him into custody immediately.”

Dork B. on January 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Yeah Hillary, PRETEND like you knew they were parliamentary elections!

The Ritz on January 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Is Hillary’s tactic to be boring as possible so no one is awake to refute whatever it is she is saying?

muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Wow, rosewaning, the “this administration” might kill me, when I think about it. I’m gonna use beer instead of Crown…

joewm315 on January 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

I’m pushing my parents that way, or into an old folks home just while we vote. :)

Not my parents, they are in it deep with Rudy and moving no where near an old folks home. They entertain and go out regularly, even if it is only to dinner with each other.

AprilOrit on January 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Ooooh, she’s obviously been schooled by SOMEBODY on what exactly the Pakistani elections were all about – the Parliament, not the Presidency. Heh.

MsUnderestimated on January 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Hillary now knows that Musharraf is the elected president and isn’t running in the coming election!

She is the smartest woman in the world!

LagunaDave on January 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

For anyone else watching the real-time response… are the independents here the same as those from the rep. debate? There seems to be a much larger separation.

rosewaning on January 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Bush Administration
DRINK

abinitioadinfinitum on January 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Wow…did Richardson just take a slap at Jimmy? Or did I just hear that incorrectly

RJS2 on January 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Too bad Bill Richardson doesn’t matter, because there are some devastatingly hilarious shots of him whenever caught listening to the others.

CK MacLeod on January 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

She just talked for five minutes and all I heard was BLAH BLAH BLAH

I think my collie understood more of it!

conservnut on January 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Hillary is saying we didn’t put in enough NATO troops
So she’ll Tomahawk em like Bill? That was what infuriated the Islamists more than anything. They viewed it as a cowardly act

Beto Ochoa on January 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

The timing per mouth really needed limitation throughout instead of last minute effort. The ol’ sermons that just won’t stop got replayed like a broken record by those spiritualists who also suffered prima dona syndrome with their perpetual interruptions of other candidates’. Sick, when a candidate’s persecution complex persecutes everyone listening with the whiney dance.

Fred stands head and shoulders above the others. Great jabs, always succinct. Fred, when not interrupted by the big baby, did not allow the moderator/candidates to deflect his complete answer to the initial questions posed. Very satisfying thought process, well grounded without the frantic element displayed by those suffering the fire in the belly acid reflux. Fred and McCain provided the best humor.

At curtain call Fred stepped back to make his way to Obama for the handshake. In contrast with Fred, Obama looks like a bobbing-head toy.

I heard a wise crack from our peanut gallery about Hillary begging McCain to meet her out back in 10 minutes.

What a laugh to see Richardson’s paranoia getting stuck with Ron Paul chattering away all smiles bumping elbows with Richardson’s eyes frantically skirting side to side in hopes of ESCAPE from the clutch.

Who needs the writers’ guild when we’ve got political debates for Saturday Night entertainment? ENCORE!!!

maverick muse on January 5, 2008 at 9:17 PM

Drink on George Bush, it seems the Donks don’t know he’s not running in this cycle.

Alden Pyle on January 5, 2008 at 9:17 PM

conservnut on January 5, 2008 at 9:18 PM

abinitioadinfinitum on January 5, 2008 at 9:18 PM

Wow… I’m glad Charlie Gibson is heading this debate. The Dems are FINALLY getting asked questions about terrorism!!! Woohoo!

MsUnderestimated on January 5, 2008 at 9:18 PM

ELECT A REPUBLICAN…thats what we’ll wish we had done.

NickTx on January 5, 2008 at 9:18 PM

conservnut on January 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Hey, you should bring back your collie’s commentary. She(?) always had some good thoughts. :)

Hillary is the most sane on foreign policy. Obama scares me more and more.

joewm315 on January 5, 2008 at 9:18 PM

Wow, Edwards completely missed the point of the question.

muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 9:19 PM

Silky’s not taking notes. He’s drawing pictures of unicorns and smiley faces.

PowWow on January 5, 2008 at 9:19 PM

Beto Ochoa on January 5, 2008 at 9:19 PM

This debate needs a little Kucinich.

ha. i crack myself up.

rosewaning on January 5, 2008 at 9:19 PM

What are you going to do John? Sue them???

conservnut on January 5, 2008 at 9:19 PM

So is Edwards advocating torture?

bnelson44 on January 5, 2008 at 9:19 PM

Charlie gets points for a couple of real questions.!

petefrt on January 5, 2008 at 9:19 PM

What’s Edwards going to do? Sue them to death?

MsUnderestimated on January 5, 2008 at 9:19 PM

But I thought among the Dems Bill Richardson had the most experience, is this not correct?

I really know nothing about them, can someone clue me in?

Did John Edwards just say pap test???

AprilOrit on January 5, 2008 at 9:19 PM

Force for strength and calmness…calming for America and god bless them, the world.

RJS2 on January 5, 2008 at 9:20 PM

SouthernPride on January 5, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Mojack420 on January 5, 2008 at 9:20 PM

These guys are pathetic !

stenwin77 on January 5, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Heh, Conservnut, GMTA…

MsUnderestimated on January 5, 2008 at 9:20 PM

John Edwards needs to swallow and relax. Talks like he’s about to choke on his own spit.

The Ritz on January 5, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Lots of words, but none of them are saying much.

Pretty stark contrast to the GOP side. Gotta say that ABC is very pleasantly surprising me with this debate.

techno_barbarian on January 5, 2008 at 9:21 PM

If we give up all our nukes… then everyone else will to?

tshell on January 5, 2008 at 9:21 PM

Doesn’t Hillary’s head just look way too big for her body?

muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 9:21 PM

Obama: We’re responsible for nuclear proliferation because we haven’t given up our nukes first!

LagunaDave on January 5, 2008 at 9:21 PM

But I thought among the Dems Bill Richardson had the most experience, is this not correct?

Yes, it’s true.

Spirit of 1776 on January 5, 2008 at 9:21 PM

Who is telling Obama that we can lock down all the nuclear weapons in the world?

bnelson44 on January 5, 2008 at 9:21 PM

OK. I just realized Obama’s a moron. I thought he had some clues but I was wrong.
