Open thread: Hey, how does three and a half hours of debate on a Saturday night sound?

The fun begins at 7 p.m. ET on ABC. I believe it’s the GOP up first followed by the Hillary-Obama death match at around 8:30, so if you want to catch the Republicans and then switch to Jags-Steelers, you won’t miss much of either. Fred may go after Huck to try to start peeling away evangelical fencesitters in South Carolina; everyone else will be gunning for Mitt, with the exchanges between him and St. John promising plenty of acid highlights later.
Sound off in the comments and please pass along tips about video-worthy moments. In the meantime, for your reading pleasure, here’s (a) Bob Novak whispering that it was Mitt who was behind the Fred dropout rumors last week, (b) Slublog analyzing Huckamania, and (c) word from New Hampshire that the state GOP has dropped out of the debate tomorrow night due to Fox’s Ron Paul snub. With Paul bringing out independents and various donation-happy kooks for the primary, I guess they had no choice but to go to bat for him.
Update (Bryan): You may already know this, but if you want to keep track of the game while you’re watching the debate, hit the NFL’s site and click on the game score and you’ll get a page that’s updated every few seconds. Washington just took the lead as I was writing this update.

OK McCain says he has evidence that man is heating the planet. John I have been waiting for 8 years to see this evidence! Why is it kept so secret??? O wait I know why, it DOES NOT exist. Prove me wrong John!!!!

Fred wins! by a Fredalanche!©
The other candidates should have had to pay to have the honor to be on stage with him.

TexasDan on January 5, 2008 at 8:48 PM
Well isn’t this special who agreed to this political
slaughter,so the Republicans go first, and now the Liberals
are up.
So now the Liberals are going to spit and polish themselves
on the issues,so they look like the better ticket.
Okay, sit back and watch how the Liberals are treated!

I’m think the Dem debate will only enhance my Fred! buzz. Or really set my teeth on edge re: the types of questions that will be asked.

Softballs from here on out
abinitioadinfinitum on January 5, 2008 at 8:49 PM
Other than Ron Paul, who is clearly out of his mind, I think everybody did reasonably well.
I was not that impressed with the substance of Huckabee and Romney’s answers, but neither was as much of a turn-off as I expected.
I also think my guy (Rudy) had a good night.
LagunaDave on January 5, 2008 at 8:49 PM
Oh,it gets better the audience is being stacked,I mean
changed!

Right, and while we’re at it, let’s cap salaries of Hollywood celebs and trial lawyers.
petefrt on January 5, 2008 at 8:50 PM
I thought Fred was cool, collected, and just plain kick ass.
I think Romney, maybe followed by McCain, had the most time, which I think is a joke.
nailinmyeye on January 5, 2008 at 8:50 PM
Fred came, he saw, he kicked butt!
The other candidates had to talk three times as long and twice as fast and still couldn’t sidestep their flip-floppery.
I think that during the debate Huckabee flip-flopped on illegal immigration again.
FloatingRock on January 5, 2008 at 8:50 PM
Fred was sharp, but didn’t talk enough and is too laid back to shine much.
Mitt did well, partly because he appeared adult, partly because of fact-time, and partly because that last answer was unopposed.
I liked Rudy tonight, he actually answered some questions that I was curious about. Fred pawned him though. Why didn’t he do this to others is the question.
Huck I think came not to hurt himself. Mission accomplished.
McCain came to throw punches. Successful? Don’t know how that will play in NH. I don’t think it helps him in SC. We’ll see.

Right. And he again looked like a bitter old man in the process.
BacaDog on January 5, 2008 at 8:53 PM
Fred is, really, the most consistent on conservative positions. He is laid back, but if he was all jumping in all the time like Romney, or McCain, or Rudy, I think it would take away from his persona.
nailinmyeye on January 5, 2008 at 8:53 PM
McBoom? Anyone think his lame a$$ jokes will backfire?
John_Locke on January 5, 2008 at 8:53 PM
Fred easily won the debate
McCain looked like an ass
Romney was cornered and looked scared at Fred when he confronted him.
Rudy cannot answer a single question without mentioning 9/11 and his answers were barely understandable.
Huckabee was like the kid in the corner that just kept saying “cant we all just get along”
Paul was good and on message, but of course everyone ganged up on him.
muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 8:53 PM
Okay Mojack I’ll agree that the reason the price of gas is what it is is due to taxes…federal and state, wasn’t a Dhimmi governor that didn’t raise the tax after Katrina
RJS2 on January 5, 2008 at 8:54 PM
That’s the mark of a good leader. Listen to everyone give their ideas, interject something here and there, then make your decision.
I thought he did fine and was “above the fray” thru out the debate.
SouthernPride on January 5, 2008 at 8:54 PM
WHERE’S FRED!? I hate the “the media hates us” defense, but seriously, could you ice him out any more?

The Ritz on January 5, 2008 at 8:55 PM
Fred didn’t have as much time as some of the other candidates but he was more direct and to the point. The other candidates wasted most of their time trying to say something with the correct nuance that their liberal nanny-state/open-borders positions wouldn’t get noticed.
FloatingRock on January 5, 2008 at 8:56 PM

The abcnews hottie pulled some poll that listed the questions people wished the repubs talked more about. Wasn’t it abc that asked the questions?
Look for the dem debate to cover things reflected in that poll.

@ NickTx on January 5, 2008 at 8:55 PM
We can agree on that if we can agree that no other candidate regards the constitution as anything but a “piece of paper”.

Mojack420 on January 5, 2008 at 8:59 PM
In a cabinet meeting, yes. In a debate? The easiest way to be above the fray in a debate is not to attend.
Spirit of 1776 on January 5, 2008 at 8:59 PM
CrimsonFisted,I’m going to bang my head on the wall for every drink.haha
canopfor on January 5, 2008 at 8:59 PM
I agree, but isn’t it too late for him, as they mentioned that he has done no real legwork in NH.
My mother has clearly left the here and now and entered the Twilight Zone, she just infomed my brother and I that Rudy won.
Jeez, and my father just accused me of being a nasty little brat for condemning their precious Rudy, and leading my brother astray. He also believes Fred went out of his way to be rude to Rudy.
AprilOrit on January 5, 2008 at 9:00 PM
HAHA, “expose the 9/11 coverup” right next to the Hillary signs.
muyoso on January 5, 2008 at 9:00 PM
Sawyer and Stephanopoulos were actually impressed with Fred! But of course, they had to ask if it was “too little, too late.” But they seemed honestly to be pleasantly surprised by his “confident, well-informed” performance. Will wonders never cease?

petefrt on January 5, 2008 at 9:03 PM
Fred gave very solid conservative answers, but the man has zero charisma or energy. Say what you will, that is an essential attribute of an electable presidential candidate.
He is Reagan-reincarnate on the issues, but he is the anti-Reagan in his ability to connect with people who don’t live and breathe movement conservatism. I wish it were otherwise, since then I could whole-heartedly support him (as well as Rudy), but the man could not campaign his way out of a wet paper bag.
Baloney.
LagunaDave on January 5, 2008 at 9:03 PM
I betcha that the focus groups don’t say Fred won.
I really want to like him, but he came across as a smart ass tonight.

So, odds on Hillary getting outright booed at this debate?
I give it a 90% chance. The instant she starts with her dirty politics attacking Obama which 60% of the facebook audience support, she is gonna get a groan from them

Ron Paul leads with 43% of the vote.
