Glenn Beck: How my surgery went wrong and I wanted to kill myself

posted at 2:05 pm on January 4, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

He’s always been the “eccentric” of the conservative punditocracy. This won’t do anything to change that. Poor guy; sounds like a bad acid trip with stabbing pain on top.

No word on what type of surgery it was but we’ll probably find out next week. Make your predictions now.

As much as I would like to speculate what surgery Beck had, I hope for his speedy recovery first. He is a little, we’ll say, different, but being unique is his M.O. I suppose.

reppac122 on January 4, 2008 at 2:10 PM

Was he trying to have that extra “n” removed from his name?

ej_pez on January 4, 2008 at 2:11 PM

Sounds like possible prostate cancer surgery.

Regardless, no matter what anyone thinks of Beck, surgery is no laughing matter, especially surgery that goes wrong to any degree.

I wish him the best.

James on January 4, 2008 at 2:10 PM

I stand corrected. That is a laughing matter.

thejackal on January 4, 2008 at 2:12 PM

I had heard it was back surgery of some kind…he seems still a bit medicated in the clip, but it looks like a house and not some sort of a care center

CBarker on January 4, 2008 at 2:14 PM

Get well Glenn. Quick! You still have a lot of noses to tweak….especially some here on HA (hint hint).

Limerick on January 4, 2008 at 2:16 PM

Thought about making a snarky comment but after seeing how much it’s affected him I’ll just say, “Get well soon, Ya Sick Twisted Freak. I’m praying for you.” No idea what the surgery was . . . website just said “blood coming out of places it shouldn’t.”

Having recently (4 weeks ago today) had major surgery that “went wrong” and required a second operation, I feel for the guy.

I hope he comes through all right.

Russ on January 4, 2008 at 2:25 PM

Considering the company where he works, it could be any communicable disease known to mankind.

highhopes on January 4, 2008 at 2:26 PM

I just found this clip a little while ago. I hope he recovers soon, but it sounds like he is going to be on pain medication for awhile. I would love to know what type of surgery and what went wrong.
Get well soon Glenn, you are a breath of fresh air, even though you do drone on a bit much about the border issue. I will be tuning in on Monday.

LakeRuins on January 4, 2008 at 2:26 PM

I also heard that it was back surgery. Not sure though.

stenwin77 on January 4, 2008 at 2:33 PM

As I am in the medical malpractice area, I’ll be interested to know what happened. Heard some pretty scarey stories !

stenwin77 on January 4, 2008 at 2:34 PM

He says in the clip he hoped he wouldn’t be remembered for going out that way. It would be embarrassing. So, i’m thinking ‘roids. My wifes law firm just won a suit for a ‘roids surgery that went awry. The guy bled badly, infection set in etc., then death. All within a week. Very serious procedure.

roninacreage on January 4, 2008 at 2:39 PM

Best wishes Mr. Beck. Sounds like a major fight with the dark side, let us know how you won. Happy you are still here!

Also, he needs to get that MacBook onto a hard surface or it’s going to melt. Listen to those fans.

I met him briefly on his book tour. Seems like a very nice guy. Throwing a prayer his way.

thareb on January 4, 2008 at 3:11 PM

maybe he had a head-out-ofasectomy?

max1 on January 4, 2008 at 3:13 PM

I hear breast augmentation can leave you with soreness.

I actually like Beck a lot. Now he is gonna be stacked too!

TheSitRep on January 4, 2008 at 3:22 PM

Hey, Glenn, I had a similar experience… but it sent me into a medical tailspin that took six weeks to escape. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for one head nurse. (And nationalizing health care will surely make it worse.)

Anyway, take care of your crazy self, Glenn. America needs you healthy and strong!

petefrt on January 4, 2008 at 3:23 PM

It’s not uncommon for a recovering alcoholic and drug addict to get into a suicidal state of mind when they are administered drugs after a long period of sobriety. It happened to me when I had my heart attack and was given morphine.

Colonoscopy?–AlexB on January 4, 2008 at 3:00 PM

–When the hospital equipment is not sanitary, there is no stopping the subsequent horrendous infections, sepsis, bleeding and mutilation, gutting for survival.

Geez, hope you recover and heal, Mr. Beck. Thank God your doctors/nurses did not worsen your situation.

Sorry to hear that Glenn is in a lot of pain. He isn’t always spot on where the koran is concerned…he says he’s read it cover to cover and believes it to be a book of peace. He may have read the version which left out Surah 9, but hey, still, he isn’t in the pocket of any political party, and he’s his own man. Yeah, he gets choked up when talking about his days as a strung out alcoholic and junkie, but he’s still a straight shooter and it can’t be easy to talk about those things. All the best to you, Glenn

Pretty sure it was acute George Brett’s disease. Probably ignored it too long and had a rupture of some sort. I hope he gets well soon but I refuse to ignore the fact that his butt seems to have exploded.

TBinSTL on January 4, 2008 at 4:05 PM

“Doctors do.”

Actually, seldom. It’s usually a number of risk factors that come together. However, it is a fact that the blame ALWAYS goes to the deepest pockets and the attorneys ALWAYS come out financially in the lead !

HELLOOO JOHN EDWARDS !

stenwin77 on January 4, 2008 at 4:10 PM

krabbas on January 4, 2008 at 4:20 PM

No surgery is embarassing if you’ve been in the medical field so I can’t really think of anything. After a while all the parts of the body have the same emotional value for the most part: penises, fingers, ulnas, vulvas, orafices of any kind – they just have different names and levels of importance. Heart > toenail.

As far as drugs: Prednizone (steroidal inflammatory) can cause extreme depression, loss of identity, and suicide but it usually takes large doses and about 3 weeks.

Steroids aren’t considered painkillers like Oxies or Prednizone, Vicoden, Demoral, Dilauden, Tylox and so on. Those drugs usually don’t cause hallucination unless over prescribed or unless and possibly in Glen’s case he had an allergic reaction of some sort. There may have also been a bad drug interaction. Hallucinations caused by opiates generally are no more exagerated than typical night dreaming.

Best of luck Glen – (I MISS HEARING YOU ON THE RADIO CAN YOU GET INTO N.W. CT?)

It’s pay back, Glenn.

GlennBeck – Wants to…

MrC_5150 on January 4, 2008 at 4:34 PM

He says that he stopped taking his pain meds. The first day or two afterward, it’s not uncommon to feel depressed, emotional, even suicidal. That’s probably what he’s going through right now, pain med withdrawal. My guess is that by Monday he’ll probably feel a little sheepish about the video.

Mazztek on January 4, 2008 at 4:44 PM

I am praying that Glenn recovers quickly. As for the type of surgery, I did hear somewhere that it was back surgery, however could it have been “backside” surgery and possibly for rhoids? Rhoid surgery can be nasty business, with lots of pain and bleeding. Plus, many people feel it’s something to joke about, so they might not be too compassionate. Poor Glenn, I hope he gets well soon.

bloggless on January 4, 2008 at 5:03 PM

I don’t think the video is all that cringeworthy. There is something very deep (for lack of a better word), genuine, and kind about Glenn that I find most endearing.

I assume he was in AA. My understanding of that process is that it is soul-baring and confessional, and I wonder if that experience allows him to be free enough to make a video like this.

Cheers, Glenn and best wishes to your family.

Entelechy on January 4, 2008 at 5:57 PM

If it was back surgery, let me say what I would say to anyone considering such surgery: DON’T.

My wife worked in health care for many years, including working in physical therapy and rehab. She says she never encountered anyone who underwent this kind of surgery who experienced genuine relief as a result. In many cases, the “cure” is worse than the original problem.

If you have a back condition that can be treated with medication, stick with the meds. The state of surgical science is obviously not far enough advanced to make spinal surgery a reliable treatment.

Ali-Bubba on January 4, 2008 at 6:03 PM

I don’t watch CNN at all. Even with Kiran Chetry…

Get well soon Glenn.

Zorro on January 4, 2008 at 6:16 PM

Sounds like a drug reaction.

I experienced a similar thing post surgery. It started with non stop salivation which I could get no explanation for(that was encouraging). This progressed to paranoid hallucinations (docs and nurses plotting my demise in the hallways) aural and visual, then after a few days, depression that whispered suicide. A week or more of absolute hell completely unrecognized or addressed by the staff.

Perhaps this is his complaint.

BL@KBIRD on January 4, 2008 at 6:39 PM

Sounds like it could’ve been an allergic reaction to a Compazine-like drug (commonly administered to prevent nausea after surgery) in combination with post-op narcotics. Hallucinations are not rare in these situations & it should be noted in bold on future medical records.

Good wishes & prayers for a full recovery to Glenn, one of the few good guys on CNN.

NightmareOnKStreet on January 4, 2008 at 6:56 PM

BL@KBIRD, DITTO to you. The excessive salivation is the hallmark of a Compazine-like drug allergy. Ask your doctor about it. If true, then stay away from any of “the …zines” =drugs ending in “zine” (thorazine, etc. and all generic forms of same)

NightmareOnKStreet on January 4, 2008 at 7:05 PM

I had major surgery a few years back and had some strange reactions to the pain meds. They definitely played with my head. Got myself off them ASAP, pretty darn fast considering the extent of the surgery. GB could have been going through some sort of psychosis induced by the pain meds.

Glenn Beck, one of the leading IDIOTS of our land who constantly chirps that he’s “a thinker” – something he has NEVER demonstrated – probably had a:

What went so bad was that his head was SOOOO far up there, and so conditioned to BEING there – that SNAPPED BACK IN!!

Bad hospitals do indeed kill people. Especially when combined with bad doctors. Thankfully, Glenn is on the road to recovery. It will be very interesting to see what he has to say on Monday.

I don’t agree with Glenn Beck on everything, but I do appreciate his passion on the border and so-called “global warming,” among other things. I also enjoy his interviews with Joel Rosenberg!

Hey – Cardio-Cranial Thrombosis is a SERIOUS condition, and it HAS been documented that Beck suffered from it! Unfortunately, it’s also not unusual for the surgery for this to go awry – as it appears to have in Glenn’s case.
