Fred on Huck: “He practically wanted a sanctuary state in Arkansas”

posted at 5:00 pm on January 4, 2008 by Allahpundit

“It could very well be that three of us will win three different races,” he says, intimating the strategy I described this morning. He’s like an 8-7 team in Week 17: Not only does he need to win (in South Carolina), he needs help from a couple of other teams, namely, McCain in New Hampshire and Romney in Michigan. Looks like he’ll have to do it without any more coaching from Newt, who’s allegedly gone over to … the other side.

Big bleeding chunks of red meat here, including/especially on taxes contra Huck. Takeaway: “When we’ve strayed, we have paid.” Exit question for our general audience via See-Dub: Did the passionate support of the right-wing blogosphere help keep Fred alive last night? (Answer: No!) Exit question for Fredheads: If you could have him as your leader, but only as a monarch, would you do it?

No need to respond. I already know.

Update: Keep hope alive!

If you could have him as your leader, but only as a monarch, would you do it?

A benevolent dictator is technically he best and most efficient government.

We could do a lot worse (Queen Hillary).

rmgraha on January 4, 2008 at 5:07 PM

That’s insulting. We’ve been conservative for years, we get enthusiastic about the only clear conservative in the race, and that means we’ve forgotten 1776?

Wasn’t that originally the idea of a dictator, in the ancient Roman sense? Someone to hold the Republic together, in the face of extreme circumstances?

Medved promoting Huck on his radio show like H.Hewitt promotes Mitt. Now Gingrich thinks Huck is the conservative answer? I will have absolutely no respect for Gingrich if he starts breaking bread with the likes of D. Morris to promote this Yahoo! This is a nuclear holocaust situation as far as I’m concerned. There must be some underlining purpose… Maybe GOP elitists are trying to harpoon the evangelical voting block (Dobson, Robertson, and the like) from ever having any influence in another GOP election. This is a election cycle that will go down in infamy.

Absolute nonsense. In the micro maybe, but not in a large community.

Fred needs to become the mother-in-law in SC. Everywhere you go, there he is in your ear. Increase your profile size Fred, make some noise!

Fred is an old guy. He wouldn’t live forever. Why not give it a shot? Pelosi and Reid can be the court jesters, Huck the spiritual advisor, Rudy in charge of war planning, and Ron Paul heads up the air force. Mitt does finance and McCain handles criminal interrogations..

Good for you Fred.

Now go the next step Fred, you can do it -

Fred on Rudy: “He wanted and largely got a sanctuary city in NYC”

Now just one more step Fred, you can do it -

Fred on Juan: “He thinks that his fellow Americans are so damn lazy that they will not pick lettuce for even $50 an hour! In fact he does not even think that they are strong enough to do it.”

jdawg on January 4, 2008 at 5:19 PM

The monarch question is silly. One of the things that Fredheads like most about Fred Thompson is that he seems the LEAST like a monarch (except for maybe Ron Paul, but…. ick). He’s disinterested in the power and the prestige, and he wants to decentralize authority.

So I guess the answer is no, but the premise is impossible to accept.

Fred’s the best compromise candidate for everyone. He might be boring, but he’s the only one who doesn’t cause a large chunk of Republican voters to stay home in protest. NellE on January 4, 2008 at 5:08 PM

Agreed, although technically the comment was directed at “Fredheads” not Thompson supporters generally, so I am choosing to take it as not applying to me.

But, even so, I think it is misguided. The attractiveness of Thompson is precisely that he represents a high view of federalism and constitutionalism, so I can’t imagine even the lunatic fringe of his supporters are looking at him in monarchical terms. Even lunatics have a sort of logic to their lunacy. In fact, what defines a lunatic is often unbridled logic that has run out of facts to operate on.

Thank you, Cavuto, for giving Fred a forum to talk about actual issues and for just letting Fred talk with very little interruption. That’s the longest I can recall anyone letting Fred simply discuss his points of view, and he comes across well. Some will say that what he said were just generic conservative talking points. Perhaps, but who else has been saying them lately? Who else puts them forward so simply and with such clear belief in the basic truth and superiority of the ideas of small government and lower taxes? Wish they were all saying it, but they’re not. Fred is.

aero on January 4, 2008 at 6:09 PM

A whole seven minute interview and not one mention of terrorism or radical Islam. A welcome relief from Rudy and Mitt’s incessant promotion of the politics of fear. Would be nice if he’d talk about excessive taxation in terms of eroding property rights and a deprecation of individual freedoms, but “lower taxes = growth” works for me if it gets the job done. Why on earth a conservative would vote for Rudy, Mitt or Huck over this man is completely beyond me. Okay, so Fred seems lazy and bored, but is slickness and virility really worth selling conservative principles down the river? Huckabee is a Christian[ist] Socialist. Mitt is a calculating Liberal businessman. Rudy is a Liberal hawk. They’re phonies. Just say no.

And I agree with Sultry that if Newt goes over to Huck’s side, his influence is toast as well.

And yes this election cycle is turning out to be a history maker by separating the “sheep from the goats”, true conservative vs. populists conservative.

Rush nailed it today!
Going back to the basics and teaching conservative principles.

Jaibones on January 4, 2008 at 7:00 PM

Tennman, I think you’re kidding. I admit not reading all the comments in this thread, but a search for “butterfly” brings up my comment first. Didn’t mean to steal :)

Howard Dean addressed his kids, thusly:

The Republican Party is falling apart today – and we are in a place to take advantage of it.

Iowa caucus voters rejected the mainstream Republican frontrunners, and gave right-wing extremist Mike Huckabee a surprise victory in Iowa last night. He made a last minute surge – without money, and without staff – and has suddenly become a contender in the upcoming primaries.

Mike Huckabee had a big night, but the clear winner in last night’s Republican caucus was President George W. Bush. All of the Republican leaders promised four more years of the Bush Administration’s failed policies, from continuing the President’s war in Iraq, to pursuing his efforts to privatize Social Security, to extending his budget-busting handouts for special interest friends.

Regardless of your personal candidate loyalties, there’s one thing for certain: we can’t let Mike Huckabee or any of the Republican candidates take over where George W. Bush leaves off.

We must win the White House and that hard work begins today. Will you help?

Entelechy on January 4, 2008 at 7:02 PM
