Russert to Fred: “So no matter what happens in Iowa, it’s on to New Hampshire?”

The reply: Another hedge, although that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s on his way out. It could mean it’s on to South Carolina, where he’s at least firmly in double digits. He’s also leaving himself a little wiggle room by backing off what he said the other day about needing to finish second tonight.

Almost $2 million raised in the past three weeks. Keep hope alive?

Fred, all do respect, I don’t think McCain’s out before you.

amerpundit on January 3, 2008 at 12:55 PM

I say lets wait and let the voters deceide before we write the obits for any campaign

William Amos on January 3, 2008 at 12:56 PM

New Hampshire? I hope not. He’s got to get into South Carolina and depending on what happens tonight, either blunt Huckabee’s momentum in the south or finish Huckabee off.

Yeah. NH is pretty much McCain/Romney country. It’ll take a miracle for Fred to win Iowa. So, basically, he’s looking at SC.

amerpundit on January 3, 2008 at 1:00 PM

This post isn’t bitchy enough!

frankj on January 3, 2008 at 1:00 PM

For a second or two, I thought I was looking at a screencap of Kelsey Grammer.

Well, why not? He’s a conservative. THOMPSON/GRAMMER ‘08! The Two-Bald-Guys Ticket. Their slogan: Grass Doesn’t Grown on a Busy Street.

He does have 2 days of events scheduled for NH this weekend.

Canadian Imperialist Running Dog on January 3, 2008 at 1:02 PM

Interview questions straight from the P_____o hit piece. That was fast!

Does Grammar have a trophy wife too?

If so, that ticket would really piss off the scorned women’s demographic.

thirteen28 on January 3, 2008 at 1:03 PM

How many times does he have to answer that “finish 2nd” question? Oy, every network for the past couple days.

I don’t know if he will have a strong showing tonight, but this Politico lie is really taking up air on the cable news. Anything to put a drag on him for Iowa.

I’m not sure what people want to hear. He has denied the politico lie, but let’s face it, if he comes in dead last tonight he may have to think about dropping out. If he comes in at least third he might get some much needed $$$ and traction.

Here’s something you didn’t hear the MSM report. Thompson: Political Reporters Lack ‘Fire in the Belly’

>snip

P. James Moriarty on January 3, 2008 at 1:07 PM

I hate the Iowa litmus test. This, if Iowa doesn’t play with numbers I can walk away with will mean a hill o beans, is overrated.
Who cares if Iowa is first.

Kini on January 3, 2008 at 1:07 PM

sorry—“Most of these journalists seem to lack what you might call fire in the belly,” said the former Tennessee senator. “When’s the last time you read an in-depth story about what the presidential hopefuls actually believe, or have accomplished? How often have you seen a reporter place a candidate’s views in the context of the Constitution, the sweep of American history, the intricacies of global geopolitics, economic theory or even basic political philosophy?”

P. James Moriarty on January 3, 2008 at 1:07 PM

Dewey defeats Truman! The MSM and some blogs are pessimistic, I will wait for the results.

Thats OK if he’s prodded and taxed a little bit we’ll find out what he’s made of.

What does Politico say about it? That’s the important source. The single anony-mouse source.

SECOND LOOK AT KELSEY GRAMMER’S TROPHY WIFE (a former Playboy model he married 10 years ago)!

I was trying to find you a link… Todd is NBC’s political director. I think he and Politico work closely together. I actually thought they were affiliated, but I don’t see the fingerprints in a quick google search.

Spirit of 1776 on January 3, 2008 at 1:18 PM

Rush just read a trascript of a speech one of the candidates made recently and asked “Who said it” and will tell us after the break. I remember hearing that speech and if Im correct it was Fred.

Tim Russert seems really uncomfortable when he’s not on MTP.

THOMPSON/GRAMMER ‘08!

I think I could dig that.

CP on January 3, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Yep I was right, it was Fred that gave the Reaganesque speech. Rush is pumping him up and jumping all over the Politico piece.

And look at that smile on Grammar’s face!! Man, the scorned women’s demographic is really going to hate him for that.

thirteen28 on January 3, 2008 at 1:26 PM

RushBaby on January 3, 2008 at 1:22 PM

Weird. I would have laid a wager that he was affiliated with both. I’m certain I’ve heard him introduced as Politico’s Chuck Todd, but maybe I heard wrong or the host spoke erroneously and it’s just stuck in my memory. Looks like Hotline was his previous employment.

Spirit of 1776 on January 3, 2008 at 1:26 PM

I’m surprised Russert did ask Fred about the premier of ‘Law and Order’ last night and his reaction to them punking him.

“What happened…?” said the assistant DA as he looked around Fred’s old office.

“This is a working office now, not a trophy room”, said the new DA.

amerpundit on January 3, 2008 at 12:55 PM

If Thompson doesn’t make it through, I’m pretty much done with the Republican party.

McCain is a great man, but his immigration stance has lost my vote for life.

Huckabee is a RINO. Horrible fiscal conservative. Horrible on crime. No foreign policy experience. He is Jimmy Carter.

Romney is a viable candidate in my opinion, but I just don’t trust him. At least I know what I am getting with Obama.

Fred Thompson is the only conservative that is right on all the issues… immigration, economy, foreign policy, government, social security, medicare, etc.

Don’t give up Fred. I’m voting for ya.

I’d go with delivering the death blow to Huck.

steveegg on January 3, 2008 at 1:33 PM

As usual the person doing the interview asked all the wrong questions and Fred answered with his usual dignity. Nobody in the MSM seems to want to give him a level playing field. Why should he even think of dropping out now? He has a realistic shot in South Carolina.

duff65 on January 3, 2008 at 1:37 PM

I hope McCain is out soon.

Tim Burton on January 3, 2008 at 1:59 PM

I was listening to my local radio station, which was reporting right next to hannity. Hannity was on, and he said that he, Hannity had asked Fred the “drop out” question this morning. Apparently, Hannity went to a Mitt and a Fred gig today. Fred flatly denied it to Sean. So that’s that.

For what it’s worth, Hannity predicts a Mitt win today.

Vanceone on January 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM

What’s sad how abysmally bad the polls were in the Presidential election, many are known, proven to use leading questions, and people will still sell their homes based on polls.

There are people taking a “second look” John McCain, who sold out his constituants, spit on his party, and is selling his vote to non-citizens.

My view is that John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Huckabee are no better, or different then Hillary, Obama, or Silky.

Rode Werk on January 3, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Fred is the only vote that you can walk away from and be proud of and know that he’s not going to embarrass you. all the rest… mark my words ‘you’ll regret it’, it may be taxes, it may be sham-nesty, it may be something else… but you will regret it. Fred is the only true Conservative.

Kaptain Amerika on January 3, 2008 at 2:15 PM

There are people taking a “second look” John McCain, who sold out his constituants, spit on his party, and is selling his vote to non-citizens.

Along with the rise of a liberal-on-everything except abortion Huckabee, this is one of the most disheartening things about this campaign season and it shows to what pathetic lows the Republican party has sunk. If the Republican party stupid enough to nominate a guy who’s pissed all over us again and again, so much so that Democrats were seriously urging him to cross the aisle, then we deserve the shellacking we will get in the general and we deserve a president Hillary or Obama.

thirteen28 on January 3, 2008 at 2:19 PM

According to people who actually know, I’m told $1,878,138 has been raised since the debate on December 12 from 24,949 people, including $719,534 from 10,237 people. For the week before, week of and week after Christmas, I think that’s pretty good. The Politico might not think so, but I think it gets Fred to South Carolina.

Frankly, regardless of the results today in Iowa (and he’s going to do better than some are expecting), I think Fred Thompson needs to pull a Reagan ‘81 (i.e. make a big, bold “I ain’t going anywhere” stand), march to South Carolina, and start throwing punches.

Clinton lost Iowa and New Hampshire before winning South Carolina and coming back. Fred has the online support. He’s going to do better than people expect in Iowa (he actually is). Huckabee is going to beat Romney today so those two are going to fight like drag queens wearing the same dress to a party. Fred needs to leverage these three things and go to South Carolina.

If nothing else, the hit job in today’s Politico should piss him off enough that he does just that.

The quote is from the above link. Fred Thompson is emerging as the statesman here by not engaging Huck-a-Buck in a trailor park beer brawl.

I think the dead pool has to go to Ron Paul first, then McCandidate second. It would be fun to watch Giuliani, Huckabee, Romney, and Thompson battle it out, and good for the party. The other Republicans simply are no fun to watch.

Go Fred. (Pssst Fred, if you do okay I’ll flip you another buck for the Southern primaries.)
