HuffPo: McCain worried about … Ron Paul

posted at 5:46 pm on January 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

At long last, a reason to root for the Only Man Who Can Save America.

GOP presidential candidate John McCain is deeply worried that his resurgent national campaign may be stalled by a relatively strong showing in tonight’s Iowa caucuses by the iconoclastic Ron Paul.

The Arizona senator’s campaign told the HuffPost that their candidate is concerned that Paul will finish third behind front-runners Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney…

“Ron Paul’s like the Joker in a poker game,” said one McCain staffer. Paul reportedly dropped three mailers overnight and kicked his phone banks into turbo-mode in an all-out push to make into the final tier of tonight’s winners…

As Paul greeted his volunteers this morning at his downtown headquarters, the HuffPost asked for the candidate’s reaction to McCain’s anger: “I’m so excited. I’m excited he’s so upset about me.”

The Reuters/Zogby poll puts them all even at 10 apiece although McCain leads by 3-5 points in most others. A surprise from the Paulnut tonight could torpedo two candidacies, in fact — Fred’s, by knocking him back to fourth or even fifth, and Maverick’s, by killing the McCain resurrection meme in its crib and having him limp off to New Hampshire smelling like a loser, where he’ll have to compete with Paul again for that state’s famously quirky independents. If Mitt surprises Huck and this tool sneaks into third, Team Romney is suddenly in very, very good position for the nomination.

To what will Paul owe the result if it happens? Air power, baby. Victory through air power.

Yes, really.

You can’t go wrong with classical music.

Vizzini on January 3, 2008 at 5:48 PM

Heh. I don’t like Paul, but if he takes out McCain…. what’s not to like?

Vanceone on January 3, 2008 at 5:48 PM

McCain/Ron Paul ticket to loserville! Allllllllll Abord!

Zetterson on January 3, 2008 at 5:51 PM

and Maverick’s, by killing the McCain resurrection meme in its crib and having him blimp off to New Hampshire smelling like a loser, where he’ll have to compete with Paul again for that state’s famously quirky independents.

Fixed

I’m okay with that.

Spirit of 1776 on January 3, 2008 at 5:52 PM

The best thing about that video? Once the Ride of the Valkyries started, and I saw the blimp, the first thing I thought of was that Ron Paul was about to start bombing the cities.

Also, is it bad of me that I wanted to see that little model airplane take off–straight into a telephone pole?

Vanceone on January 3, 2008 at 5:52 PM

OK, now your going to get Blather in a lather!

conservnut on January 3, 2008 at 5:53 PM

Lol, Flight of the Valkyries, absolutely classic. Hats off to the RonPaul peeps. Too bad some of ‘em are Truthers.

Spirit of 1776 on January 3, 2008 at 5:57 PM

First McCain worries about water boarding terrorist now he worries about RuPaul– just shows you how far out of wack his priorities are.

And talking to Huffpo wasn’t one of his brighter moves either

Vanceone on January 3, 2008 at 5:48 PM

That’s what I think. At least Paul is for our borders.

And as for his chance at the nomination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-redvY7iiN4

Derailing McCain is good.

Keljeck on January 3, 2008 at 6:00 PM

McCain doesn’t have anything to worry about with Ron Paul. Nothing would be better for his compaign than a head to head between the two of them…. oops, I guess he knows that ;-)

bnelson44 on January 3, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Yes, really.

Gotta love the Alex Jones logo/link in the sidebar.

I love that the republican primaries are a joke. It’s just an awesome site to behold. Really.

lorien1973 on January 3, 2008 at 6:10 PM

if the candidates and political process would’ve taken Paul on instead of ignoring him they could’ve already discredited him. instead they’ve basically given him free reign.

perhaps this is kinda why McCain took on paul a little in that recent debate.

jp on January 3, 2008 at 6:10 PM

I witnessed the Ron Paul air corps in person. They had a plane at the Bank of America 500 in Charlotte this past October. RON PAUL IN 2008!!!

krabbas on January 3, 2008 at 6:11 PM

LOL Ron Paul is beating McCain with an Air Force. That’s deliciously ironic.

Ron Paul at least kept this primary entertaining. He is probably going to go down as the nuttiest candidate in election history.

Seriously folks, tell yourself in 2050 when people talk of the guy who raise 5 mil on one day and rode around in a blimp isn’t going to cause our children and grandchildren to do a double-take.

BKennedy on January 3, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Not so fast.
“Ron Paul: I don’t think the fence can solve a problem. I find it rather offensive.”

Complete7 on January 3, 2008 at 6:16 PM

Who isn’t worried about Ron Paul?

Look at his eyes!

Slublog on January 3, 2008 at 6:17 PM

I’ll give Ron Paul points for thinking outside of the box. Then again, I’m not sure whether Ron Paul was ever aware of the existence of the box to begin with.

Supporting a wall /= supporting secure borders.

Ron Paul is rare in that he is a libertarian who wants to put the military on the boarder.

Please don’t make me defend him again, makes me feel dirty.

HOWEVER looking at his website:

Physically secure our borders and coastlines. We must do whatever it takes to control entry into our country before we undertake complicated immigration reform proposals.

http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/border-security-and-immigration-reform/

He is sending “mixed messages” to say the least.

Keljeck on January 3, 2008 at 6:22 PM

For a guy who is all up in arms about Congress approving everything, he sure seems to be willing to simply just deploy federal troops on a whim. I guess he isn’t worried about the law.

William Teach on January 3, 2008 at 6:31 PM

Keljeck on January 3, 2008 at 6:22 PM

If you are not going to put a wall, how in the hell are you going to secure the border? It would take hundreds of thousands of troops on the border to secure it without a wall. And would you station them there forever? So I’m assuming he is going to pull all the troops from Afghanistan, Iraq and every other base in the world to stand on the border for years.

Complete7 on January 3, 2008 at 6:35 PM

Can’t believe anyone is falling for this.

Blatant expectations setting by McCain camp.

JamesP on January 3, 2008 at 6:42 PM

Complete7 on January 3, 2008 at 6:35 PM

Pretty much, though he thinks most of the trouble is our welfare. So if we just cut that they won’t have anything to live on.

So cut the military budget, bring them home, put the rest on the border.

Like I said, at least he’s for securing our borders. But don’t make me defend him, PLEASE!

Keljeck on January 3, 2008 at 6:43 PM

If you are not going to put a wall, how in the hell are you going to secure the border?

Isn’t it already easier to enter on a passport and overstay than to cross the desert?

there must be a strong, financed, group of paultards in the area. I’ve seen many not far from speedway on corner of harris/mallard creek holding up signs with “Google Ron Paul” and sometimes waiving a flag around lunchtime. I drove in parking lot of the RiteAid they were at and they drove beat up old cars with “Ron Paul 2008″ all over them. Saw a similar car in Raleigh one day

obviously they don’t have normal jobs if any, and its also absurd to go to these lengths in a State whose primary isn’t until MAY……of course they are probably playing for the long run and the 3rd party run to come

jp on January 3, 2008 at 6:45 PM

when paul ran in 1988, he was for open borders with zero patrol.

Your lying! Ron Paul would never change his mind!

Keljeck on January 3, 2008 at 6:49 PM

the funny thing about the “Ron Paul is a patriot” narrative and the “18th century” candidate/thinker, is that if Paul were around back then he’d be accusing his hero, Jefferson, of being a War Monger and Liar over the Barbary Wars and coming up with reasons why America was to blame for the Jihadist of Jefferson’s day. and spread whatever else war propaganda he could think up.

Then he’d be either hung for treason or challenged to a duel and shot by a real man.

jp on January 3, 2008 at 6:52 PM

Now thats scary, sounds like the nut cracker sweet
as the opening music for this video!

canopfor on January 3, 2008 at 7:00 PM

As much as I dislike Paul and his Rontard supporters, I almost want him to win in IA just to demonstrate what a farce our nominating process has become. Screw you, Iowa and New Hampshire; screw you right in the ear.

Keljeck on January 3, 2008 at 6:49 PM

Suggestions of Ron Paul having a mind are few and far between.

Anyone who’s played Red Alert would find the whole ‘blimp over the city’ montage more than a little disturbing..

And what the hell’s up with Ride of the friggin’ Valkyries? Or am I the only one who remembers just how well associated that score is with the propoganda movie of Stukas dive-bombing Poland?

Reaps on January 3, 2008 at 8:29 PM

In fact, maybe someone could photoshop ‘who is Ron Paul?’ onto the sides of those things..

“Is it done, Yuri?”
“No Comrade Paul, it has only begun”
