Huckabee: If Romney wins, “You might as well put [the election] on eBay and sell it to the highest bidder”

Class warfare fever — catch it!*

Huckabee said that, like him, the Continental Army also faced skeptics. “At the beginning of this country there were some farmers with muskets. Nobody thought they could beat the British. After all, the British were so well-financed. And they had the nice long rifles. &They had a magnificent Navy. Our guys had a few rowboats.”…

Huckabee, born into humble origins in Hope, Ark., and a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University, said he could run for president “because our Founding Fathers had this idea that we were all equal, didn’t mean that we started out with the same net income, didn’t mean that we started out with a last name that opened doors, and people said, ‘Oh, yes, I knew your father at Harvard at Yale or Princeton.’ People knew my father from the shipyard, not Harvard.’”…

“The people of Iowa cannot be bought,” he said. “They cannot even be rented for the night.”

He told them a victory for his campaign would allow the voters to tell the story of Thursday’s caucuses to their offspring, telling them the tale of “when we decided in Iowa that we would not allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by people waving money at us, and waving checkbooks at us.”

He suggested that a victory for the well-funded Romney would be a victory for “plutocracy. &You might as well put [the presidency] on eBay and sell it to the highest bidder.”

When asked whether these paper-thinly veiled attacks on Romney didn’t perchance violate his “no negative campaigning” rule, Huck preciously replied, “I haven’t attacked him because I’ve never called him by name when I did that in these speeches today.” Yes, really.

Exit question: What’s shadier, paying a bunch of people to set up a state campaign network for you or coopting preexisting networks of religious people by touting yourself as the race’s true “Christian leader”?

Huckabee said that, like him, the Continental Army also faced skeptics.

Oh, so now High Reverend Huck (had to borrow it) is comparable to the Continental Army.

“The people of Iowa cannot be bought,” he said. “They cannot even be rented for the night.”

But, if you win, it’ll become apparent that they can be fooled.

But to be serious, fox have been showing the clip of him saying this on his campaign bus to reporters. I have to say he said it convincingly. And it also worked for republicans when they tainted kerry as an out of touch billionaires husband.

sorry the quote im thinking of is not the one you posted, but one in which Huck is far more explicit, saying he didnt think the public could identify with a man who could write a personal cheque of tens of millions to fund his campaign and have it not effect his personal finances.

And if Huckabee wins, a lot of people like myself who would have voted Republican are going to be looking for a third party candidate. staying home or, God forbid, second looking the dems.

Some one needs to tell Huck-a-Bucks that the constituency in Iowa thinks an e-bay is a place to back up a wagon and bale hay. Mike Huckabee reminds me of Mr.Sweeney on Green Acres. If he gets the White House we will all get paid in Huck-a-Bucks currency.

TheSitRep on January 2, 2008 at 7:44 PM

Once again, Huck has failed history. Not only did neither side have “long rifles” as rifles were not made in anything approaching mass production much before the Civil War, but it was the Continentals that used their muskets in a sniper role.

steveegg on January 2, 2008 at 7:44 PM

You know, I really was of the mind to give Huckabee the benefit of the doubt after his strong performance in the YouTube debate.

Lately, I’m starting to hate the guy a little. It doesn’t approach the all-consuming loathing I feel for John Edwards, but if Huck keeps pulling this butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-my-mouth-and-my-poop-don’t-stink garbage, I’m going to start hoping for an unfortunate incident in which Chuck Norris goes sleepwalking and accidentally roundhouse-kicks the daylights out of him.

Huckabee: show me your organization and ability and I’ll show you my goodness and mercy or if not that doesn’t work I’ll play every low, pathetic victim card a Pastor in Chief has up their sleeve.

The reason Hucky puck is doing well is the same reason Bill Clinton did, the voters believe him in spite of falling far short on overall Conservative virtue.

The High Reverend Huckster is really projecting with the vote buying accusation that he makes against the people of Iowa.

One thing for sure, none of them have set up a bribe gift register like he did.

Every time I hear these class warfare contests taken to absurd lengths I am reminded of Monty Python’s classic We were so poor skit.

I think I read that Huck was the first person in his family to graduate from High School so he probably beats out John Edwards in the “my father was a millworker” game. I wonder who had the larger shoe box to call home.

I’m not a Republican, I’m a conservative. It’s my basis for all my political judgements. I’m not an expert but experience has taught me what a conservative is. And what a liberal is. And what a Republican is. And even what a Democrat is. Geezus H. Huckachrist is definitely a Democrat. The only saving grace for conservatives in this election cycle is the simple fact that 80% of the electorate is paying absolutely no attention whatsoever. That and the media’s attention span is 20 minutes.

The comment I refer to below is from 8:42 in the thread you referenced above.

It seems inevitable, frankly, that tempers will flare and they are being draw on candidate lines, as one might expect. However, you are drawing a distinction, intentional or not, of moral superiorness on one side by labeling at least one outside your referenced group as snotty and snooty. However, to the dispassionate observer, one must conclude that such behavior is also within that referenced group and the mere nature of your generous behavior gives it cover.

If I may draw a comparison. The most legitimate complaint of the old CS was that anti-Fred vitrol made it into almost every thread, it became unavoidable. We see similar behavior now with regard to scorn of Mitt on something that was absurdly blown out of proportion. (I mention this as it was recent, there are more vicious examples in the vault). He made a bad move politically but instead of accepting or criticizing that, it has become an issue of ignoring common language uses. Because it is was not left in the thread and carries on and on, genuine irritation and animosity builds up. This is no excuse for any uncivilized behavior by anyone toward you. But I mention it because when you claim them and praise that as wit you put yourself in the line of fire and enable that. Perhaps you do that for your own reasons of which I am not familiar, but because you are known as a generous person and a moderator of sorts it creates an imbalance that by force of nature must rectify itself to regain the level. The laws of physics will not be denied. If you do not enable it, it will equilibrate more quickly.

You are welcome to any measure of disagreement with me on this subject you think fitting, because I do not say that to be critical; rather you seem worthy of my honest appraisal.

Spirit of 1776 on January 2, 2008 at 11:22 PM

Spirit, first thank you for your time/effort/honesty, even asking before commenting, which btw. wasn’t necessary.

Guilty as charged on snotty/snooty, both being human traits we all possess on occasion, and this leading to the conclusion that none of us are perfect (never an aim of mine, ever).

You are definitely not in this category and I regret every time I start naming names/nome the plumes, as it is here.

Without explanation, and it would take too much effort to post all which lead to this, it’s difficult for anyone to make sense of it. All the rest just piled on and it is what it is now.

There are many here who’ll vote for the conservative nominee, and there are a few who are welded to their candidates. I like some more than others but will vote for 99% of them, in the end. There have been brutal arguments/accusations/insults, most not necessary. No one is more sad about them than I am but we’ll all live.

Most sad is the state of the party. The next few months will be more clarifying, one hopes. Personally, I can report that life is good, due to enormous efforts/rewards, no matter who wins. I fight out of idealism, also guilty as self-charged. Maybe it comes across too passionately.

Then there are the barbes - if we throw them we must accept them. I for one am tough enough to do so.

You are an incredibly reasoned, reasonable, good gentleman and I’ve always respected you, and will continue to do so. With gratitude,

Entelechy on January 2, 2008 at 11:58 PM

I agree. You are the only one in the position to make your own judgments in regard to the specifics of the issue to which you referred. I can understand it though, there are some here, one who called me a traitor for example, that I do not response to either. It’s a waste of time, energy, and intellect. I do not mean to place myself in position of judge or jury on the specific situation, but rather wanted to speak to the environmental aspect.
There have been brutal arguments/accusations/insults, most not necessary…The next few months will be more clarifying, one hopes.

Buy Danish: I think that if we don’t do something we will get stuck with some horrible Democrat version.

I found it, read it, and excerpted it here. I don’t believe that particular comparison is that accurate. I would equate it more to seatbelt laws. The entire concept, as I try to demonstrate with the above quotation, is more Rovian than I like. That being the concept that the populace is now dependent on governmental services and instead of scaling them back, they are simply run better by R’s than D’s. I don’t advocate that, though I acknowledge it’s popularity. A deeper analysis will have to wait for another day.
