Biden hits Hillary on Pakistan

It won’t really matter until one of the other of the Dems’ big three candidates hits Hillary with her cluelessness on Pakistan’s history, politics and elections. But this is a start, and it might draw comments from either Obama or Edwards. Edwards is in the best position to hit her on it.
Democrat Joe Biden suggested Tuesday that presidential rival Hillary Clinton doesn’t adequately understand recent events in Pakistan.
The Delaware senator was responding to news that Clinton suggested in two recent interviews that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is up for reelection this month.
Musharraf was actually reelected in October, and the upcoming Pakistani elections are parliamentary, not presidential.
“We have a number of candidates who are well-intentioned but don’t understand Pakistan,” Biden said at a campaign event Tuesday. “One of the leading candidates — God love her.”
“There are good people running,” continued the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who has made his foreign policy credentials a centerpiece of his long shot presidential bid. “But to say Musharraf is up for election! Musharraf was elected — fairly or unfairly — president six months ago. It’s about a parliamentary election!”
Clinton’s comments came in an interview with ABC Sunday, in which she said, “[Musharraf] could be the only person on the ballot. I don’t think that’s a real election.”
The New York senator also made similar comments during an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer last week, saying then, “”If President Musharraf wishes to stand for election, then he should abide by the same rules that every other candidate will have to follow.”
Both gaffes were first noted by conservative Thomas Houlahan, writing for the Middle East Times.
This story tells us two things about Clinton. First, that she’s as much of a lightweight on foreign affairs as Mike Huckabee, but with less excuse: She was the First Lady for 8 years and has been a senator and leading Democrat contender for president for years since. She doesn’t have much direct experience on foreign policy, but she has been around it enough to have at least a basic understanding of what she’s talking about, so there’s no excuse for her to get Pakistan wrong. She also has the campaign’s most expensive political machine, which ought to be better than this on the facts. And she’s running her campaign on being ready to conduct our foreign policy from the day she takes office; her misunderstanding of Pakistan hints that that’s not the case. Second, it shows that she’s a Clinton, ready to dissemble at the first opportunity rather than just admit an error and move on. I’ll grant that the latter isn’t a surprise so much as it’s a confirmation: She’ll bring Bill’s habit of lying without Bill’s charms and skills if she’s elected.

Gotta love Biden

I wish it had been one of the Republican candidates, but since it came from an opponent in her own party, maybe the story will get some traction in the MSM. The talking heads must be beside themselves competing for muckraking ratings right about now.
RushBaby on January 2, 2008 at 1:47 PM
I don’t agree with Biden’s politics, but he’s helpful in hitting fellow Democrats on foreign policy.
amerpundit on January 2, 2008 at 1:49 PM
If she actually just came out and said she was wrong and she needs to be better informed I’d fall out of my chair. She’s going to spin herself clear off the planet with this one. I’m going to get some popcorn and wait for the most overlawyered, parsed beyond parsed semantics we’ve seen since Slick Wille got caught with his hand in the intern. We may even find out what the definition of “is” is.

Just as long as she can remember what color the mountains’ majesty is.

I seriously doubt that either Edwards or Obama are going to bring this up. First it would only serve to underscore their respective lack of foreign policy experience. Secondly, Democratic primary don’t really care much about foreign policy. (They are quite possibly selecting their candidate based upon who has the nicest hair.) Finally the Caucus is tomorrow and it won’t really matter what they say today anyhow.

Biden’s domestic stuff is typical “unions and labor built america” stuff…but you can’t front on his abilities on foreign policy AND getting good shots in on opponents.
ernesto on January 2, 2008 at 1:55 PM
That’s like saying “Bless her heart” here in the South. It’s the Southern way of saying “She’s a complete idiot, but I’m much too polite to come right out and say it.”
Made me laugh!

“I meant to say that ‘his party is on the ballot.’ Why don’t you people believe me? Why do you people never believe me? If I could, I’d disclose all of the Presidential papers that prove how smart I am. How involved I was. But, Bill won’t release them. I’m not the one who won’t release them. I was actively involved in running the country. Directing it, if you will. But, when it comes to those Presidential papers, Bill calls the shots. Not me. Bill called all of the shots – unless I need to take credit for something.
Really, it was clear that I meant that ‘his party was on the ballot.’
Dammit, you bastards are so stupid!
Vote for me. You need me.
And, I love you and America.”

And Biden makes the case to keep him in the United States Senate.
I’m hope it was worth it Joe. How can Hillary sit on the SenFR committee again?
gabriel sutherland on January 2, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Third, Bryan, it shows Hillary understands the press well enough to know that if she issues a comment “I knew Bhutto through the years…” and a video of herself, her daughter, and their bad 90’s fashions walking with Bhutto, that someone in the press will present that as credible experience. Andrea Mitchell, I’m looking at you.
It sad that the people interviewing Hillary seemed not to know enough to know that she didn’t know what she was talking about. I think it’s a shame Biden doesn’t have more of a chance with the Dems.
MayBee on January 2, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Gee, who was it, yesterday on that “Hillary is wrong about Pakistan” thread, that said Biden was the ONLY Dem candidate that could be expected to know the facts on that subject????
LegendHasIt on January 2, 2008 at 2:07 PM
I keep being reminded of Rush’s talking points about HClinton-she’s run for office, but she’s never run anything. Never been a leader in the private sector, never run a business, has had zero administrative responsibilities. I know that each new President is a ‘newbie’ on the job, but the reason Governors (generally)make better Presidents is they have governed, administrated, rather than simply debated ideas .
How many former Bill Clinton cronies are now in media ready to act as Greek Chorus for Hillary? The reason she can flub Pakistan without worry is her news nannys will cover for her.
Imagine the headlines if President Bush had made the same error.
Doug on January 2, 2008 at 2:11 PM
But she’s a women and so was Bhutto. What else needs to be understood by the Liberal mind?
Hening on January 2, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Careful there! Think Travelgate and FBI files.
a capella on January 2, 2008 at 2:18 PM
Interesting! So why did he do this? He knows he has no shot I would think. Is it politically motivated or just ego driven to say “look at these noobs”
How the hell can Hillary not bone up on Pakistan right after Bhutto’s death?
Dash on January 2, 2008 at 2:23 PM
It’s about time somebody from The New Direction Democrats hit Hillary on this issue.
DfDeportation on January 2, 2008 at 2:36 PM
Dash- believe it or not, I think Biden actually takes foreign policy knowledge quite seriously. He wants the Dems to do better.
MayBee on January 2, 2008 at 2:36 PM
Some say this points to her lack of gravitas.
I just like saying GRAVITAS.
Shouldn’t the media douches be rapping her over and over with charges of lacking GRAVITAS much in the way they did in 2000 when Bush mispronounced a few names?
Oh yeah, no big deal.
benrand on January 2, 2008 at 2:39 PM
benrand- the problem is that the media people covering her didn’t know she was wrong. They didn’t even know enough to know that the problems with Pakistan should put focus on Biden’s experience. So he got no coverage, and no boost, and we’re stuck with Hillary and her headband frolicking with Pinky as foreign policy gravitas.
MayBee on January 2, 2008 at 2:47 PM
I hope Biden enjoys the space picked out for him next to Jimmy Hoffa.
conservnut on January 2, 2008 at 2:48 PM
I got an e-mail from my wife today with this little snippet in it.
conservnut on January 2, 2008 at 2:50 PM
Uh-oh, Crazy Joe opened his yap again.
Lemme just check my wallet…
mojo on January 2, 2008 at 2:52 PM
That is so true! You can say the ugliest thing about someone, and then smooth it all over by tacking on ‘bless their heart’.
tlynch001 on January 2, 2008 at 2:57 PM
Biden should give a raise to the staffer that caught that…
maintenanceman on January 2, 2008 at 3:11 PM
Bill Clinton lies ?? Are you kidding me ?
Just give me one instance of Bill Clinton lying. Better yet – give me a hundred instances !!
Incidentally, I keep reading about Bill Clinton being so charming. There must be something wrong with me because I don’t find the SOB to be even mildly charming. I find him to be extremely nauseating. In fact I think I’ll go puke now just talking about him.
OBX Pete on January 2, 2008 at 3:12 PM
It’s downright scary when one who wants to run the most powerful country in the world knows less than I do about foreign affairs, but when those who are in charge of informing the uninformed masses in the street — those who know nothing except what they are told — sit there ignorantly silent in the face of such a huge gaffe…
God PLEASE help us!!!
leepro on January 2, 2008 at 4:23 PM
So why again isn’t Joe running?
Classic liberal, failure is entirely acceptable because we’re all so well intentioned, so what if liberals have paved and then resurfaced over and over the road to hell with well meaning surrender..and corpses.
More Classic liberalism. At no other time besides during an election cycle will any bona fide liberal use the term “God love her”; scripture and references to God only come into play were votes are up for grabs.
Speakup on January 2, 2008 at 4:30 PM
I’m betting Obama picks it up. But in any event, after the primaries, it should make for some really entertaining attack ads.
petefrt on January 2, 2008 at 4:47 PM
Its probably beneath Joe’s sensibilities but you can damn sure bet his staff does.
Speakup on January 2, 2008 at 4:50 PM
Exactly right! That was an excellent analogy of Shrillary’s credentials.
Of course, you won’t hear a peep from the drive-by’s about her lack of gravitas, and she’ll never get a “gotcha” question like Bush did in 2000.
No bias my ass!
rightside on January 2, 2008 at 4:56 PM
It’s too late for anyone else to bring it up. They missed their opportunity, and are already discredited. Her machine staff watched the clips (probably live) and didn’t notice. Anyone bringing it up now got it from here.
.
And I think Joe Biden (knowing full well he has no chance of the nomination) is bucking for the VP slot with all the rose blossoms tossed at Clinton…
stacman on January 2, 2008 at 4:57 PM
I’m hoping FNC does a piece tonight on the weekend’s Hillary gaffes.
