Video: Fred’s message to Iowa voters

posted at 8:32 pm on December 30, 2007 by Bryan
Send to a Friend | printer-friendly

A video like this one, 17 minutes of Fred addressing voters directly via the camera, forces viewers to ask a few basic questions. One, is what he is saying true and is he saying it clearly enough so that it makes sense? Second, does what he’s saying reflect my values and does he have a record of sticking to those values? Third, does he make a plausible president?

Wow.

17 minutes well spent.

Bob's Kid on December 30, 2007 at 9:51 PM

I’m wondering, has the media tried any angles on Fred’s
faith, because I haven’t seen any stories on Fred beliefs
which is good.

So in a way, would that be like a non -issue that the
Lib media can’t exploit.Which of course would be great.

this video

from the sidebar at the youtube page for the video for this thread is rather hard on him, in not very subtle ways, it looks to be from a local lll station.

A friendly, wise, note of caution to wccawa - she’s nagging you (subtly) already, and you’re not even engaged yet :)

Entelechy on December 30, 2007 at 9:42 PM

A badge I proudly pin to my chest.

wccawa on December 30, 2007 at 9:52 PM

He obviously wasn’t supposed to be looking towards the camera at the cut-aways. If he had, it would have looked like a bad Stephen Colbert parody.

And I suspect they intentionally wanted a less professional, less slick looking set. Everybody’s seen Fred on TV; I’d guess they now want him a little more human.

Or the local cable access studio was available cheap.

Definitely one of those.

For what its worth, if he looked and sounded that good there, I can’t even imagine how good he’d be in the Oval Office or at a State of the Union address.

Professor Blather on December 30, 2007 at 9:52 PM

Apologized for it? Great that makes me feel warm and cuddly. Give him a cookie, not the highest office.

Spirit of 1776 on December 30, 2007 at 9:45 PM

Well, like I said, they all have some warts, but if we’re looking for someone entirely without blemishes, we need to look for someone who has never done anything.

I know, and in all honesty, it was his support of CFR that has held me back until this point. He was wrong, and so was congress, the Pres., and the SCOTUS. CFR was a black mark for the Federal Govt. as a whole.

Yep. I understand what you mean. I’ve pretty much resigned myself to a poor incoming President. I don’t like any of the D’s and the R’s are pretty poor - when Huck and JMac are polling as high as they are: sad. When Fred might be the best of them, pretty pathetic.

Weight of Glory on December 30, 2007 at 9:56 PM

Yeah. The more I think about it the more it bothers me because of the sheer magnitude of its effect. He was wrong, and yeah so were the others, but the others weren’t the driving force. I don’t really give credence to his apology because if he wanted to make up for his error he would put some effort into a new bill to modify the previous bill instead of running up to the judges to defend it. It’s not too much different then John saying he wants to secure the border first now. Pillow talk is all it is.

Fred was still a player in Washington. Could he have introduced a bill personally, no. If the issue was important as he said and he wanted to rectify it, he has allies and friends. It would not be that difficult (though getting it to the floor after the mid-term election might be more difficult). Remember, as Fred reminds us, he was called into shepherd Mr. Roberts through the conformation process. He was still active. Or as Fred might say:) he didn’t just fall from the apple truck.

I see your point, though the second camera makes it more apparent that he’s reading from a teleprompter. I agree that he has a lot of charisma, and would be even better on camera in the Oval Office, but I’m just surprised that his media presentation, once the campaign started, has been less than the sum of its parts–solid conservative values, plain spoken, telegenic, professional actor.

He didn’t need to wait until this congress, he could have acted when the effect was obvious. I don’t hold him accountable for that, I’m just saying his apology is pretty empty when he went up to the Supremes to defend it and didn’t do anything to fix it. It’s also, for what it’s worth, a pathetic apology - it didn’t do what I wanted it to do. What that’s not even the point when you are treading on the BoR’s pal. Anyway.

I’ll stay on-line for a few if someone can give me a specific answer on what Fred intends to do about the war. Specifically in Iraq and also in general. I do get the sense that he understands the jihad and clash of civilizations, but I don’t get the message from him other then that he’d let the generals decide. That’s a poor answer for a CiC, so surely he has cleaned that up. Is anyone versed in that?

Professor Blather on December 30, 2007 at 10:31 PM

Okay, I just want to make some points clear.

1. wccawa has not yet embedded the youtube video of Fred.
2. I have.
3. I’ve also hotlinked to this HotAir thread.
4. If Fred came upon the two of us, he’d walk over, and whisper in wccawa’s ear some advice. wccawa would miss the knowing wink Fred would give me and run at me howling an Indian war whoop. I would then call on the Might Of Fred and punch that hippie back into Oregon, there to feast on his tofu. Fred would pat me on the back, and tell me not to take no Politico articles lightly, and that tickleddragon is waiting for me.

Therefore, I win. TD, would you mind joining me at the altar? Fred is a God in and of himself, and he has offered to marry us.

MadisonConservative on December 30, 2007 at 10:31 PM

From Fred’s website, for those who have trouble with, uh, websites:

The first responsibility of government is to protect the American people, the homeland, and our way of life. Today we face the urgent threat of radical Islamic terrorists. Al Qaeda is committed to attacking us here at home, and wants to use weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to kill millions. We must never give them that opportunity. We must defeat the terrorists abroad, and that begins in Iraq and Afghanistan—the central fronts in this global war. We must show the world we have the will to fight and win. A weakened America - or an America that appears weaker - will only encourage further attacks. We must persevere. As Commander-in-Chief, the president must ensure the United States has the means to achieve victory. Presidential leadership requires talking to the American people about these stakes, mapping out a clear vision for success, and devising a comprehensive strategy for achieving it. I am committed to:

* A larger, more capable, and more modern military that can defeat terrorists, deter adversaries, and defend the U.S. and our interests.
* A missile defense system that can protect the U.S. and our allies from long-range ballistic missiles.
* An enhanced intelligence community, with robust human-intelligence capabilities, focused on terrorism and proliferation.
* A robust approach to homeland security that will protect our nation from terrorists and WMD, regardless of where they come from.
* A strengthened system of global alliances to better combat terrorists, proliferators, and traditional threats to our interests.
* A judicial system that deals with the realities of terrorists and unlawful enemy combatants.

tickleddragon on December 30, 2007 at 10:39 PM

You people may need two blimps.

Professor Blather on December 30, 2007 at 10:39 PM

LOL….nah….no worries…my wife is Irish (hence this screen name)….she knows how to knee-cap with the best of em….that keeps me on the straight and narrow I can tell ya.

My phone line is too slow to play more than a few minutes of Fred’s speech.

Has he said much about the millions of illegal “immigrants” who are ILLEGALLY in the United States?

Has he said what he would do about the fifth column plantation owners who are drawing illegals here like flies so that they don’t have to pay a competitive legal wage to their fellow Americans?

Nevermind pal, if that’s the best you can do, you’re not the man for the job. Those are, as I noted, a plan for the revitalization of the military and generalities about the threat of militant Islam (which I ref’d as Clash of Civ)

Hey, I thought this was a snarkless thread.

What was the thing Fred said to me at the altar? Oh yeah…

Just wait till wccawa meets my doppelganger…he’ll make him look like he just put on a fireman’s hat for a photo op.

We came so close to 200 comments. I was doing my best to ignore the only bad apple.

It’s still a beautiful thread. If only for the picture of Ted Kennedy in a Hooters outfit … and all the blimps.

Not in those exact words but he did touch on every issue, except for fetus harsvesting.

So did I, we were both wrong: “From Fred’s website, for those who have trouble with, uh, websites:” No hard feelings. I just want the real answer on this. This is my second major concern re: Fred. I would like to see some strength from Fred on the wot. He has done that with his social security plan, etc. He has to have more than the stuff he has up on his site. But reality is he may still have those cards up held up to his chest to see how it plays out. I was hoping post-surge successes he might have given some specifics, esp in regard to what we are going to do when we have the troop draw-down which is coming, etc. HA readers are generally pretty informed, thought maybe someone might know.

Spirit of 1776 on December 30, 2007 at 10:46 PM

Ladies and Gentlemen, just how cool would a HA conference be? I ask ya!

tickleddragon on December 30, 2007 at 10:46 PM

MB4, he did. He touched on all our ’sensitive’ items. Tone, voice, mannerisms, presence, smile smirk just perfect. Men, women, children, all want to just marry the guy. If only it weren’t so late.

You and your bizarro friend just enjoy yourselves. (rolls eyes)

There are only two good things that have ever come out of Wisconsin, boy… and they are…

ummm…

well…

OK. I forgot.

But I meant it before I was against it! (or forgot it) Or something like that. And I am drop dead serious! Next?

wccawa on December 30, 2007 at 10:47 PM

Yes, ticleddragon, but would we wear masks or not?

tickleddragon on December 30, 2007 at 10:46 PM

It would have to involve a great deal of alcohol.

And, of course, a blimp.
