Video: Fred’s message to Iowa voters
posted at 8:32 pm on December 30, 2007 by Bryan

A video like this one, 17 minutes of Fred addressing voters directly via the camera, forces viewers to ask a few basic questions. One, is what he is saying true and is he saying it clearly enough so that it makes sense? Second, does what he’s saying reflect my values and does he have a record of sticking to those values? Third, does he make a plausible president?

Anyone who says they enjoyed it less than 17 minutes (the length of the video) after it was posted better have watched it elsewhere beforehand, or they’re a total dip.
Just a hint. ;)

Ya know, I was pretty down on Fred early on, but he’s growing on me. But still, he just is missing something when he’s speaking. I’m not sure what it is, but HE doesn’t excite me even if most of his message does.

GEEZ, there is absolutely NO OTHER CANDIDATE equal to Fred Thompson! He already had my support. Those who counter Fred’s expertise for the POTUS job only prove their own slovenly ignorance.

I’m think I’m now officially a Fred-head.
I’d once thought it would be Rudy, but I have too many questions about him on issues that matter to me. Although I still won’t mind voting for him in the general.
Hunter won’t hunt and Tancredo tanked.
Then I thought it would be Romney, but his weaseling gave me doubts, and his supporters torpedoed him for me. Although I wouldn’t mind voting for him in a Best Hair competition.
Huck was never really in the running, though he seems enough guy. Neither was McCain. The border. CFR. What can I say? He’d make a fine SecDef, though. An honorable man.
Which leaves me with Fred as the last man left standing. But where once I thought I’d end up endorsing him reluctantly, I’m now warming up to him. In recent weeks, he’s impressed me.
And his supporters seem to be the last Republicans left with more positive to say than negative. And dear sweet Lord, that’s like music to me at this point.
Also, there’s Jeri. She’s both real and spectacular.
This video seals the deal. I like Fred. He earned my primary vote, not that he’ll need it here.
Plus he has my $400.
So I’m a Fred-head. Is there a password I need or something? Can I get an official t-shirt? Does he know Jessica Alba? If he gets a blimp, can I drive it?

We have three strong candidates who would be fine presidents. It would be nice to include McCain, but he can’t be trusted, and Huck can’t be elected. Rudy, Fred , and Mitt all have some warts, but they are head and shoulders against anything the donks can put up, and IMO, would serve the office well.

mitt’s flim-flamboyant “management” prowess ain’t worth squat in Congress where mitt has no power to fire the disgruntled. whatever mitt’s accomplishments, they ain’t worth squat compared to The Fred’s Great Achievements ON OUR BEHALF!
Simply FINDING government information online is due to The Fred and allies like Lieberman. My, oh my. Requiring financial reports of all agencies responsibilities for funds spent and COORDINATING reported findings for the public record, coordinating the Attorney General’s office and US Marshals, cuts in wasteful farm subsidies that go unaccounted, forcing our beloved USPS to function utilizing the best equipment & employee responsibility without cost over-run, and the list goes on…

The third question is a resounding YES. This guy is someone I want to see on the screen speaking to us when crisis is at hand.
The second question will be a matter of issue to many. Yes, he will reflect the values of many who visit this site, and probably most. Some argue his record does not conflict that. I don’t know how to say this, folks, but there will be questionable conduct with anyone running for president, either through ways that person governed from a position of executive power, or through choices made while proceeding through their career. They are inevitable. You need to line up the cons that every candidate has and decide which are the least threatening and which set least contradicts the policies they are claiming they will implement. So far, no one has been able to show Fred as more of a flip-flopper than any other candidate. Rather the opposite.
And the first question? He’s putting as simply as can be. Sadly, many people only want 30 or 60 second sound bytes on television. My father, bless his soul, is one of those people. He’s also who I took my roots from politically. We argue incessantly. Yes, he’s putting it simply. It’s a question of whether you can get someone undecided to sit down and listen to a hard 17 minutes of good, straight talk. Too many prefer half-minute chunks with a wench of a moderator at the helm.
In short, ImFerFred, because he’s not only the best on the list, but he’s better than Bush, better than Dole, and in the class of Reagan. Not saying he is Reagan. He has yet to prove that…but he damn well has huge potential.

Well now we have a candidate that speaks from the heart,
and I believe him.Much like Ronald Reagan and Bolton,
he knows when the media is trying to screw him around.
And I think besides Liberal’s who want surrender,he puts
the war on Terror into focus, which I think still is
America’s number one priority, and number one issue
for the election.
canopfor on December 30, 2007 at 9:32 PM
Management of his campaign could be an indicator of his executive management ability, although it isn’t a major item. And, he hasn’t really had major administrative experience, although I think that often gets overemphasized as a credential, so it isn’t a biggie. I would prefer him for the nomination, but not to the total exclusion of Mitt or Rudy. The virulence directed towards them bothers me a bit.

Exactly my feeling. Huge potential.
My only concern is his lack of executive experience. With Rudy or Huckabee or Romney, I can see how they acted in executive roles. Fred is unknown there. I wished he’d served a term as governor.
But I’m willing to give him a chance.

I was going to mention that, but to be fair, he has admitted his mistake, so I believe him and don’t consider it anything more than a mistake, not a philosophy. Similar to some of the previous positions Rudy and Mitt have taken which have since shifted. Sometimes politicians do change their minds for other than cynical reasons.

Something’s odd with Fred’s campaign. This video has a public-access production quality to it, and Fred seems a little stiff behind the desk, not even looking at the cutaways to the second camera. With Reagan you could see the Hollywood experience. I had expected Fred to be able to leverage that similar experience and his natural charm a little more smoothly.
dedalus on December 30, 2007 at 9:44 PM
There are some great comments at YouTube, and a few really funny ones.
Professor Blather on December 30, 2007 at 9:45 PM
It was a mistake that had to go to the Supremes, it’s unconstitutional and an insult to the Bill of Rights. I’m not a cheerleader for Rudy but Rudy went to the Supremes to knock down Johnny Mac’s unconstitutional at least he was on the right side of the law. fred#s is right too w/ tort reform.
I’m not here to rain on the love-fest, just want you to know what you’ll wake up with in the morning. Everyone makes fun of Rudy or Mitt for what they might do, when Fred has already shown his disregard for the foundational principles. Apologized for it? Great that makes me feel warm and cuddly. Give him a cookie, not the highest office.

Canadian Imperialist Running Dog on December 30, 2007 at 9:47 PM
As far as tort reform is concerned, I understand where you are coming from, but I think Fred is right to defer the matter to the states to set their own limits on rewards in lawsuits. His federalist stripe is what dictates that. It is that federalist streak that attracts me most, for I don’t want a President who will apply conservative solutions to problems the Feds have no business solving! I think Fred understands that better than any of the other candidates. But this is also the place where I find the “wart” with Fred: federalism (as far as I understand it) wouldn’t allow something like CFR to stand, so his support for it does bother me. However, he has said that it has been a mistake, and I have made peace with myself to overlook it. He’s my guy now.
Weight of Glory on December 30, 2007 at 9:47 PM
Well of course it was made in a studio of some sorts and not the oval office. And he wasnt supposed to look at the cutaways, it was supposed to capture another angle of him speaking to the masses, not pandering to them.
