No partisanship because the majority was slim and could not explain or convince anyone what our foreign policy was.

There were no damaging leaks, because the demoncrates were not told the things they wanted to hear or just failed to recognize the truth that was right in front of them.

You’ve used a Stinger missile given to you by George Bush Sr. to shoot at a helicopter sent by George Bush Jr.

Uh, not that one. No Stingers ever came back at us...all used up and they don;t have the best of shelf lives anyway. Other than that, pretty good stuff.

John Murtha has a bit part in Charlie Wilson's War, whereby Charlie saved John's sorry, ethically-challenged butt.

From a 2006 John Fund WSJ piece:

Crile's book notes that "a teary Murtha had confided to a colleague that Wilson's effort had saved his life." Crile concludes that the Murtha "rescue operation" had far-reaching consequences. "For O'Neill the intervention ended the threat to his hold on the House and unleashed him to become Ronald Reagan's liberal tormentor."

I watched the History channel show on Charlie Wilson and now I have one question. Sure a lot of people put forth the propostion that the timing of this film is designed to give credit to the Dems for winning the cold war but let's look at it from a slightly different angle. What if Reagan really knew what was going on and turned a blind eye? If it blew up it would all fall on Wilson's head and if it went well then mission accomplished.

Excellent points made by John Fund.

I saw the movie yesterday but I read the book too long ago to recall where the movie and book are at odds.

I was skeptical because I'd heard that Reaganites weren't happy with it. It gives Wilson a bit too much credit at the expense of Reagan and Thatcher, and of course there are predictable jabs at right wingers and Christians, but that's my only criticism. It was very well done, and if anything the movie provides an argument as to why we should not cut and run from Iraq.

Is there a better, clearer example of the elitist lewtwing liberal MSM bias than the way they report on Hollywood and the entertainment industry??
This film will do well because it espouses SOME conservative thought and action. All the other "war" films failed not because they were "war" films, but because they were ANTI-AMERICAN films. ANTI-MILITARY films. These are the films that will be lauded come academy award time. And the television ratings for the oscars will go down further.

The movie, tv, and videogame elites HATE guns and war. Unless of course they can be used to make TONS of money, and sully America's reputation overseas. In that case, the more blood the better! Torture- hel* yes! Hollywood LOVES torture- as long as it's NOT used on terrorists!!

I think Hollywood should lead by example- strict gun rules! no torture! no offensive language or anti-religious imagery!

Dang it, the leftwing Hollywood and MSM elite loves to tell everyone ELSE how to behave. I say- YOU FIRST.

“We won because there was no partisanship or damaging leaks.”

One damaging way in which the right-wing resembles too often the left-wing is the idea that we should know 100% of what the government is doing. Sometimes politicians need to negotiate in secret to get anything done. Of course, the people have a complete right to reject what's done, as in the amnesty debate. And, of course, we need to figure out some way eliminate the earmarks and get a more rational budget process. But still congressmen need a way to back down from their more strident promises on both the left and the right.

And I wonder how much the easy information on the internet making nothing secret any more has created the bitter partisanship on the Hill now?

The Soviet Union’s collapse was due to many factors. Communism’s inherent economic un-viability and it repression of man’s natural individualism are just two.
However I can imagine that the CCCP would still be ticking if half of our congress provided cover and moral support like they do for Al Quieda now. [enter Reid & Murtha]

My stepmother (the semi-liberal of the family) called me all excited about the movie, telling me I had to see it because it was "everything I'd been telling her." Still not entirely sure what that means, but I'll take it as a compliment if Charlie Wilson is the bada$$ he seems to be from some of the synopses I've read. He did good in helping to beat the Soviets, I'll certainly give him that. So that's ONE war movie made in the last five years I won't feel nauseated sitting through...

Oh, and be on the lookout for one coming called "Stoploss." From the preview, it looks like a propaganda piece (considering I know guys who WERE stoplossed, plus the fact that it's in the bloody contract that it might happen, the drama seems a little over the top). I actually spat in the theater I was so disgusted.

Charley Wilson's actions in no way exonerates the liberal treason artists however there was a time when many more Democrats loved and cared for this country than now.

Long enough ago before Democrats degraded themselves to the liberal depths of depravity, they loved our nation and fought the good fight for freedom too.

Speakup on December 28, 2007 at 11:25 PM

And then there was Senator Bloviate from Massachussetts who was in communication with the Soviets in the 80s trying to defeat Ronald Reagan. Why that fat tub of lard is still in office is beyond me.

Other Democrats, intent on blocking White House support for the Nicaraguan Contras, happily let Mr. Wilson have his way to bolster their own anticommunist credentials.

Heh, how first hand I know this part of the story. The biggest ruthless weasel was one Albert Gore, yes that prima donna, followed by Messrs Kerry and Kennedy, yes the two senators from that state.

But he believes that nothing like the Afghan operation could survive today's poisonous Washington atmosphere.

...and not in a looooooong time to follow. The hell with our country. Politics and winning, first and always.

Well, at least one did.

Many others were complicit in the complete infiltration at all levels of the State Department by Soviet spies.

Speakup - Joe Lieberman comes to mind.

MCPO Airdale on December 28, 2007 at 11:33 PM

Mine too while I was writing but he's an independent and I doubt we'll find out later that he was anywhere near as proactive as Charley Wilson (hope I'm wrong).

In 1981, two years after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Mr. Wilson visited refugee camps in Pakistan at the prodding of Joanne Herring, a conservative Houston socialite he'd been dating. There he saw starving families and Afghan children whose arms had been blown off by explosives disguised as toys. "I decided to grab the commie sons o'bitches by the throat," he told me in a recent interview.

They have resisted the temptation to comment on any current U.S. foreign policy missteps and highlighted how, not so long ago, one ornery congressman and a few friends helped change the world.

Anybody see any Democrats like Charley Wilson lately?
Any tough as nails anti Communist or America loving liberals maybe?
Long enough ago before Democrats degraded themselves to the liberal depths of depravity, they loved our nation and fought the good fight for freedom too.
Now we have old balding and botoxed hippies that love, hate conspiracies and anything anti America.
And they actually have the gall to sling insults at anybody who even disagrees with defeatocratism.
