Video: John Edwards’ silly, angry new ad

John Edwards has an interesting view of the world. He thinks big corporations steal people’s futures out of greed. The reality is a bit more nuanced, of course. There are good corporations and there are bad ones. There are corporations that set out to make good products that make people’s lives better while making profits for their own shareholders (many of whom happen to be their workers), and there are corporations that set out to exploit cheap overseas labor to make a quick buck and they don’t really care about anything beyond that. I’ve worked for a couple of large corporations, one a for-profit and one a non-profit. Both were pretty good places to work, and I certainly never got the sense that anyone in them was out to steal my future or anyone else’s. My point is that not all corporations are equal in their goodness or in their evil. But you’d never learn that if you only listen to the increasingly shrill, bordering on anti-capitalist John Edwards. He’s all anger and no substance.
By focusing the ad’s visual on Edwards’ audience, the producers obviously want to show nods of approval for his message. It also takes the focus off him and the fact that he’s a ginormous hypocrite on the subject of wealth.
If anyone steals futures, it’s trial lawyers who sue corporations into bankruptcy over human errors, thereby enriching themselves and to a lesser extent their clients while costing many other innocent people their jobs. But you’ll never hear anything like that from Edwards, either.

Video’s down for now, Bryan–can you try a different host?
see-dubya on December 27, 2007 at 2:59 PM
YouTube seems to be having a rough time at the moment.

It’s back up now.
Bryan on December 27, 2007 at 3:01 PM
He must’ve been upset by Bhutto’s murder.
Yeh. That’s what it was.
Shy Guy on December 27, 2007 at 3:05 PM
To be fair, the ad hit before Bhutto’s assassination (about 18 hours ago, going by his YT channel) but I didn’t see it until the last hour or so.

They also create a lack of trained medical practitioners in certain disciplines, thus creating hardship on patients needing that particular expertise. Think OB/Gyn. But, it’s all for the greater good.

“Stealing your children’s future?”
How many American Dad’s and Mom’s children make among the highest average salaries in the world working for ‘big corporations”?

I think there would be a lot of video out there of Edwards from back when we was a
blood sucking parasiteambulance chaser. As for this – its looks staged to me. Notice how the bobble heads are always in the ‘center’ of the frame… and the camera never pans…

Sorry… correction… even with preview I missed it…

This man sounds like a Socialist.
Baphomet on December 27, 2007 at 3:13 PM
How can we not support a man who laments the division of the country into “haves” and “have-nots,” and who lives in a 20,000 sq. ft. home?
I, for one, love hypocrisy and lies in our politicians. It verifies the order of things.
I hate ‘em all; but, in honor of Orwell, I hate ‘em all, but some more than others.

Followup video:
Scene: 2011. Edwards has been president for two years and has “taken on” the big greedy corporations, resulting in widespread unemployment and misery.
Nodding puppet from current video: “I didn’t know he meant he was going to go after our employers! What do I do now? My husband was so ashamed when we became homeless that he shot himself, and now my kids and I are living in our car, which doesn’t run. If only I could go back and change my vote!”
Voiceover: John Edwards, uniting the two Americas, in misery.
Bad Penny on December 27, 2007 at 3:17 PM
Fox is reporting that Edwards got through to Musharraf on the phone and will report the details of that conversation shortly.
I can’t wait.

Note to American-job-providing-Corporations; If Edwards wins the POTUS election, its time to move those jobs to a business-friendly country (and I’ll be right behind you).

John Edwards bumper sticker reads hollow.
christophercube on December 27, 2007 at 3:23 PM
But Bryan, don’t you know that corporations don’t really “produce” anything but are actually means of exploiting the proletariat to benefit the borgeoisie?
Not like trial laywers, which have the mystic ability to channel unborn children and sue the heartless borgeisie to futher the goals of the humble proletariat, seeking only a small personal sum themselves.
You just don’t understand, you’re part of the military-industrial complex.
/Edwards.

John Edwards Will Destroy You.
thareb on December 27, 2007 at 3:28 PM
No wonder Ron Paul is such a crank, it’s all Edwards’ fault. It’d be pretty damn depressing to be an Ob/Gyn sued for sexual harrassment by a greasy trial lawyer like Edwards.
BKennedy on December 27, 2007 at 3:30 PM
Edwards will announce that he has been hired to file a class action lawsuit against gunmakers and suicide bombers.

A lot of Dems really believe this nonsense of Corporations. We heard this, and you blogged it, right after the last dem debate. In particular the bald headed fart making the corporate greed comment. I hear it also from the really lefty libs and the paulnuts here.
My 401K makes up many of these “greedy” corporations and my portfolio seem to be doing very well, thank you. If anyone else has a 40K, watch out.
Hitler had an angry message also.

What’s the latest on John Edwards getting that press secratery pregnant while his cancer stricken wife travels the country supporting his campaign for president?
Zetterson on December 27, 2007 at 3:53 PM
Somewhere at C-Span, they must still have the video of the day in 1998 when C-Span followed John Edwards around while he campaigned for the US Senate. Back in 1998, C-Span followed ran raw footage of a number of key Senate races. On the day that the C-Span cameras were rolling, John Edwards was asked what he thought of North Carolina being a “right to work” state. And Edwards, then trying to be a moderate, answered the question by saying that North Carolina benefitted from being a “right to work” state. He was quite emphatic about it and gave a convincing explanation for why being a “right to work” state helps North Carolina. That position is anathema to organized labor. Organized labor demands that every worker in a job site be made to join the union. It is about the most important position to organized labor. Yet Edward has been running around as the candidate for organized labor while knowing that his campaign answer back in 1998 sounded like the views of a candidate who was seeking the support of the National Association of Manufacturers. Edwards knows that the MSM is too lazy to actually look at the footage of his 1998 comments. So nobdoy asks him: “When you were running for Senate, you were in favor of “right to work” laws and you opposed employees being compelled to join labor unions, right John?” And nobody asks Mr. Edwards: “Do you still strenuously disagree with the positions of the AFL-CIO, UAW, and AFSCME?
I feel like a one man truth detector. If will be a cold day in Hades when John Edwards puts one over me.

Long gone are the days when you could trust people to have the self disipline not to defraud insurance companies with fake claims. The honor system if you will is dead. I blame the corrupt trial lawyers. One of Bushes campaign promises was for much needed tort reform. Remember? Lawyers are now running the Democratic party.
sonnyspats1 on December 27, 2007 at 4:03 PM
Loser.
D2Boston on December 27, 2007 at 4:06 PM
And yet executives from many large corporations (like Motorola) continue to support Democrats. Talk about the march of the lemmings…
rmgraha on December 27, 2007 at 4:12 PM
I get involved as an expert in construction litigation cases. There are too many plaintiff attorneys who take a single issue and turn it in to the opportunity to sue the general contractor and architect for every little tiny little thing, whether it is a defect or not. This results in 10 different subcontractors being sued, which means 10 different insurance companies and their laywers are now involved, each of whom has their own expert.
In the end, most of the garbage gets mediated out, the plaintiff may or may not receive enough money to fix the original problem, and hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent on attorney and expert fees. The end result is higher insurance rates for the contractors and higher bids on projects to cover new insurance rates, thus the consumer is paying more for the product but not getting more as the extra costs go to “overhead” and not services.
And all this is due to lawyers trying to maximize a legal complaint instead of protecting the rights of their client.
So, the hypocrisy of John Edwards is that trial lawyers do not necessarily make our lives better, but they do make the costs of goods and services rise. Edwards himself has taken money out of the pocket of the working man he so “courageously” wants to defend and protect. He may be the most dangerous of the Dims big three.

Heil Edwards!
peacenprosperity on December 27, 2007 at 4:33 PM
Hey, back off dude!
John Edwards KNOWS they’re stealing…cause he channeled the unborn children and they told him so!!!
But it was the chat while jogging with Chris Reeve that really solidified it for him.

It was big corporations that killed the beast.
Big corporations that produce jobs, pay taxes and produce goods are bad
Big union run government, that produces many useless jobs, pays no taxes and produces next to nothing next to the cost to keep them open are good.
Hening on December 27, 2007 at 4:38 PM
That’s what I think. He’s certainly the most obvious demagogue of any of the major candidates.
Bryan on December 27, 2007 at 4:40 PM
According to Johnny then, the only good corporation is the biggest one of them all — the government. The one that he would like to see grow, and grow, and grow; and profit, and profit, and profit. The one whose employees are not held accountable for their actions. The one trial lawyers must go through hoops of fire (immunity – sovereign and official) just to be able to sue. The one that has special statutes, ordinances, etc., specifying the type of relief afforded to those wronged by it. Yes, big, bad government. The biggest corporation of them all – the one that Johnny would like to be Chairman of the Board for.

Video: John Edwards’ silly, angry new ad
BacaDog on December 27, 2007 at 4:58 PM
All of this is pretty funny to hear a bunch of people here writing about hipocrisy. The main point of Bryan’s post is that not all large corporations are the same. I agree 100%. But wouldn’t it be obviously hipocritical to then assume that all trial lawyers are “scum-sucking ambulance chasers,” or whatever the new cliche might be?
Could someone please show me a frivilous lawsuit that was tried by John Edwards? Throughout all of this criticism of Edwards, and his days as a lawyer, I have yet to see anything to support this idea that he is an “ambulance-chaser.”
sandman on December 27, 2007 at 5:11 PM
The trial lawyers’ counterpart to Jesse Jackson.
petefrt on December 27, 2007 at 5:28 PM
Good point sandman.
I’m sure someone here would be delighted to help you out on that. Unfortunately its a little late in this thread though and not too many people will see your question. I have a sneaky suspicion though that there will be another Edwards post sometime in the near future. Try to get that question in early. I’m sure you will get some good and detailed answers.
Zetterson on December 27, 2007 at 5:29 PM
Thanks, Zetterson. I’ll try to do that.
sandman on December 27, 2007 at 5:49 PM
John Edwards does have the advantage of precluding his mental state as he reaches his golden years. Great embarrassment or great anger. One or the other… or possibly both. Hurrah for John.
Griz on December 27, 2007 at 5:53 PM
True, and I don’t assume that they all are. I do believe that the one who put forward that ad is, though.
Bryan on December 27, 2007 at 5:55 PM
Try Google and Yahoo search engines, why count on others to educate.
Wade on December 27, 2007 at 6:10 PM
Yep. Any rich person who expresses concern for poverty is a hypocrite. If they were really that serious about it they’d use millions out of their own pockets and run for president on a platform focusing on easing social inequalities and poverty….psh hypocrites
Seriously though should he just give away all his money or something? How could he no longer be a hypocrite in your eyes? By downplaying problems of equality and advocating supply-side economics?

That was a broadside against the eeevil “corporations.”
If you don’t see the pandering to the ignorant in that, you’re part of the jury he wants to pack.

Let’s face it – all of the Democratic candidates are millionaire (some are multi millionaire) Socialists.

Bryan, are you in favor of a plethora of laws & tons of bureaucracy to prevent outsourcing?
Is it inherently immoral to provide good jobs to people who don’t happen to be American?
jgapinoy on December 28, 2007 at 8:43 AM
John who? This little douchebag…
Jaibones on December 28, 2007 at 9:24 AM
No. Merely making a point that not all corporations approach their business in the same way.
