Was Tancredo’s endorsement of Romney a “stinging setback” for Fred?

I sure thought so, but with the caucuses eight days away it’s time to start laying the groundwork for blaming the media in case Fred disappoints. So here’s Jed Babbin explaining why the phrase “stinging setback” is and can only be further proof of the AP’s left-wing bias:
There is a small problem with the AP story: the facts. Tancredo did endorse Romney, but Thompson actually benefited from Tancredo’s withdrawal, possibly more than Romney did. Thompson’s campaign staff was stunned: not by Tancredo’s speech, but AP’s coverage. And here’s why.
As reported by The Politico, Bill Salier — Tancredo’s Iowa state chairman — is joining Thompson’s team: “He’s a true-believing social conservative who ran an uphill race in the ‘02 GOP Senate primary that raised some eyebrows. In short: He’s the sort of worker bee a campaign likes to have on its side. If Salier puts his shoulder to the wheel for Fred, he could be a major asset.”
The basic story was not contrived: Tancredo did withdraw and endorse Romney. But the misreporting of it was the functional equivalent of an attack ad directed at Thompson. And it cannot have been accidental. No young reporter would be able to do that without an editor’s approval. Or, more likely, an editor’s orders.
If Tancredo’s withdrawal caused his chief Iowa asset to shift allegiance to Thompson, how is Tancredo’s endorsement of Romney a “stinging setback” for Thompson?
Because the seal of approval of the most stalwart border enforcer in America is worth more than two weeks of work from his chief strategic asset? Salier “could be” an asset for Fred; Tancredo is an asset for Romney. Fred pitched himself as the true blue anti-amnesty warrior of the big five; he rolled out the most thoughtful, serious immigration plan among them; he was the logical choice for the Tancredo benediction and might have benefited tremendously from having an advocate as media savvy and beloved by the base as Tanc doing the rounds on cable news to stump on his behalf. Instead the buzz went to Romney. It’s undeniably a setback; the only question, given the Salier pick-up, is whether that setback on balance falls so far short of “stinging” as to make an in-house conspiracy at the AP the likeliest explanation for their word choice. I’m skeptical.
But since I know the Fredheads are going to complain, here’s a little free advertising for their guy. He needs $250K in the next three days to run his new ad in Iowa. Rick Moran’s trying to get a blogburst going to help him along. Click the image to watch and donate.

MSM, fears the Fred…every ask why would the MSM fear Fred and seemingly endorse Huck and Mitt.
Because they know Huck and Mitt can be easily beaten up and discarded.
When the liberals don’t want something, I stop and listen…and ask myself, “why don’t the liberals want Fred as a candidate”.

All well said! just toss Fred 10 bucks for his campaign help the guy out
Kevin43 on December 26, 2007 at 2:49 PM
I think we need to parse the word “stinging” in great detail. It merits at least 200 posts.
a capella on December 26, 2007 at 2:49 PM
You know, I push Romney. In this campaign season, it seems most candidates supporters cannot stand the other candidates… or their supporters. This is particularly noticable between Huckabee’s religious shock troops and Mitt’s followers.
Most “conservatives” can’t stand McCain or Rudy, for various reasons.
But very few seem to dislike Fred. Same with me. If Fred gets the nomination, I won’t be upset at all.
There is only two beefs with Fred I have, and why he doesn’t get my support: 1) No executive experience. The man hasn’t run anything. It’s like with Newt–great policy positions, but actually RUNNING something turned out to be disastrous. I’d love for Fred or Newt to be like chief of staff or something, where they can have the great ideas, but not have to implement them.
2) The laziness knock. I don’t know if Fred wants it, not really. The guy could have waltzed to the nomination, but he just doesn’t appear to want it much. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but the Presidency is grueling, and the next president isn’t going to have a free ride–lots of issues out there. Iran, Supreme Court, Iraq, jihadi’s, taxes, budgets, etc etc etc. Would Fred be excited to get up in the morning and deal with them?
I’d take Fred 2nd, and by a long shot, over anyone else. If Fred pulls it out, great.
But I’d still rather have Romney. Romney has turned everything else he’s touched into gold so far… it should continue.
Vanceone on December 26, 2007 at 2:51 PM
Mitt got Tanc. and Fred! got his campaign staff, I think on that score it was a wash. But it did greatly diminish my opinion of Tanc. He gave (sold?) his endorsement to someone who has already flipped on the issue of immigration and, in my opinion, can’t be trusted not to flop on it as well.
P. James Moriarty on December 26, 2007 at 2:51 PM
Found a way to send Fred! some more money this morning. The “tank on the red pickup” was around 9 grand back then, and now it’s up to $17,927.
Much appreciated post, AP.

Yeah I read this earlier this morning and as a Fred supporter I was skeptical as well. Its nice to know that his campaign manager told him to get bent and that he was going with Thompson, unfortunately Iowans only saw the endorsement of Mitt.
Exit question: His new ad has almost an exact dollar amount he needs for the ad by Friday. Does this mean that he is flat broke and sitting there looking at me with the insides of his pockets pulled out?

RushBaby on December 26, 2007 at 2:53 PM

MarkB on December 26, 2007 at 2:54 PM
Since Fred! is getting a move on in Iowa.
Perhaps is finally a call to arms for Fred Thompson.
The MSM has hated the prospect of Fred! as POTUS simply because he’s the modern equivalent of the anti-Communist.
Speakup on December 26, 2007 at 2:57 PM
The only thing “stung” here was Tanc’s reputation.
He did a great service to the country by being a leader on this issue lo these many years, but in the end, he sold out. Bush 1 and “no new taxes” comes to mind.
Parse it all you want, but this was his issue. And in the end, he sold out.

Based on what Tanc said, I think his endorsement for Mitt over Fred said what he thinks about their respective chances for getting the nomination. If Fred has been polling 1st or 2nd consistently in recent months, I think he would have had a better shot. But with his campaign not exactly setting the conservative world on fire and resulting poll numbers, I think Tanc hedged his bets by going with the guy who had the combination of the best chance of winning and enforcing the borders.

I’m afraid I’m skeptical of anyone using the term “gravitas” these days.
And as for gravitas, Mitt is as empty as his suit.

We’ve been waiting for Fred to come leaping out of the bushes for how long now? 2 or 3 months? Or is this all part of his plan? He’s gonna lose every state and still get the nomination because he played a great role an admiral in the Navy or a DA?
The day Fred drops out of the race and absconds with the rest of the Fred loons donations, they will say everyone else in the rep party is stupid, crazy, or part of Romney’s (or whoever) campaign staff!
Sly as a fox? Ppppftttt! He’s either lazy, stupid, or dishonest.
csdeven on December 26, 2007 at 3:16 PM
Before I start the usual ‘Fredhead disclaimer’:
If Fred wants more MSM airtime then Fred needs to do things that make the MSM notice. Yes I believe they ignore him because he would make a strong candidate. One thing the MSM love more then anything…..$. If Fred gives them something to yak on about they will cover it.
As far as Tancredo goes……it hurt Fred in Iowa. The campaign manager is a great pick up but hardly carries the weight that Tancredo does. Fred can offset it with a barn-burner across the state. That is how I hope he is spending my money.

A republican winning in Massachussets; holding a resonably conservative position while Governor there;
Circumstances dictate courses open; Unrealistic actions only invite failure. Governor Romney did well in Massachussets considering his electorate.
So trying to judge Mitt’s actions in Massachusset against the actions of a Republican governor in a more conservative electorate is flawed.
The suit is not empty, thus your statement on Mitt being empty is likewise not applicable.

Why are you worried about how Romney is affected by a person who supports him? Only an absolute FOOL would go into a voting booth and not vote for a guy because they don’t like what some random supporter says. The next time one of these Fred loons says that to you, just tell them you are gonna follow them around the blogs telling people how great he is and that you support him 100%. You’ll see the ignorant ass automatically start demanding that he be judged by his own actions and not those of a person who supports him.
Besides, I haven’t decided who I’m supporting yet. Rudy and Mitt look pretty good, and McCain is OK too. The only candidates I have completely eliminated because of their disgusting behavior towards American is Fred. Oh, I guess that’s only one. Heck, even Hillary never helped terrorists or dictators. Fred’s the Danny Glover of the rep party. Danny helps Chavez, and Fred helped Aristead. As an added bonus, Fred helped terrorists and unscrupulous companies who exposed their employees to asbestos. He also gave us McCain/Feingold. And the cherry on the top is that he funnels campaign cash to his family.
Try judging Fred on HIS behavior and not mine. When you do, the depth of his betrayal to America will be quite evident. Blaming me makes the Fred crackpots feel better, but it doesn’t change what Fred is. They lie to themselves and want little old csdeven to carry their burden. I refuse, and will continue to tell them the truth about that dirty lowdown dog.
csdeven on December 26, 2007 at 3:46 PM
I guess we can agree to disagree. Besides, if IF he did criticize all candidates equally, he seems to treat those who support Fred just like Ronbots, which is an affront.

I believe the anti-endorsement did hurt Thompson to a degree, but only to the extent that a non-endorsement of anybody by Tancredo would have helped Thompson, or an actual endorsement would have pushed Fred over the edge to victory.
Still, I have no doubt that no matter who Tanc endorsed his supporters are far more likely to support Fred over Mitt. Anyone can see that Tanc was promised much in that meeting with Mitt, including a position in his administration. THAT is a victory for Tanc and if Mitt wins it’s a victory for border enforcement proponents everywhere.
I’m finally going to give to Fred.

csdeven on December 26, 2007 at 4:15 PM
Tanc’s endorsement of Romney has less to do with his confidence in a Tancredo-esque passion for border security in Romney and more to do with the fact that Romney has (well, had) all the momentum going into the primaries.
I don’t know that Tanc has sold out as much as tried to back the strongest horse — specifically one that he feels has the best chance of continuing to have the national spotlight throughout 2008 (and thus would have the best opportunity to make Tancredo’s message heard).
Sir Tancelot’s candidacy has always realistically been about keeping the demographic, cultural, and security issues surrounding illegal migration on the table and in the spotlight, so I’m not surprised that he would try to pass that torch to the person he felt could hold it up the longest.

2. Said ‘if I recall’ to the NY Times reporter.
3. Is a Clinton campaign supporter and fund raiser.(Do a campaign contribution search). Your rebuttal: He supported Repulican’s too. You are correct…and they are Chuck Hagel and Lincoln Chaffee. Whoopie!
4. The Libyan lawyer stated for the record that he had NO recollection of receiving advise from Fred Thompson.
The total number of follow up articles, by ANYONE in the MSM……….ZERO. All other reports were entirely based on the NYTIMES hit piece. Not even the NYTIMES followed up on it once the facts were laid out in the blogs.
You have nothing CS other then hate. Enjoy that while you can.

Limerick, cs is a PAID political operative. Barracko & Hillary pay him/her to act a fool on this site. No one would act a fool spreading lies about a candidate daily, hourly or by the minute unless they were paid. Would they? You think cs would act like an ignorant fool for free?

Yeah, keep telling yourself that. Fred’s people have already admitted his involvement. Same with Aristead etc. But none of that matters to you guys. To you, Fred is the savior of America. Fred almost ALWAYS got himself involved with the scummiest people he could. He went for the money and not principle. You want him for your president because you are so enamored with the guy that you have forgotten what it’s like to be a regular American. The American people hate lawyers and lobbyists. Fred is both, and was involved with scumbags. He is completely unelectable in the real world. In Fred Land, he’s a God, but to the rest of us normal folks who believe in principle over profit, Fred is just another scumbag lawyer/lobbyist.
Enjoy that while you can, because Fred will never get near the Whitehouse. Thank GOD!

Being a Thompson/Hunter/Tancredo/Arpaio kinda guy, I don’t think Tank’s people are to high on Mitt or Huckster.
No matter how much the media wants you to think it.
It aint that media are delusional, they’re just deceitful.

No wait, the only real knock on him is that he is lazy and won’t wear a silly hat.
