Clinton whines that “the rich” unduly influence politics

The NY Sun might as well have asked: Would you like some cheese?
Now that Mayor Bloomberg is getting ready to spend hundreds of millions — maybe even more than a billion — of his own dollars on a presidential run that, if executed properly, would take the electoral votes of New York and California and Florida and Massachusetts out of the Hillary Clinton column and into the Michael Bloomberg column, President Clinton is suddenly coming down with the fantods about the dangers of self-financed political campaigns.
“We are very frustrated because we have a Supreme Court that seems determined to say that the wealthier have more right to free speech than the rest of us,” President Clinton said in Iowa on Sunday, according to Politico, complaining that such spending violates “the spirit of campaign finance reform.”
“…the rest of us.” Bill Clinton has become filthy rich since leaving the presidency. These days he’s always seen in the company of the world’s power elite, people who can write multi-million dollar checks to his library fund. For him to talk about “the rest of us” as though he’s not among the world’s upper crust is, as usual, a shameless lie.
The Sun editorial goes on to list rich Democrats from the Kennedys to Jay Rockefeller to Jon Corzine to Eliot Spitzer to John Kerry, who have all financed their political aspirations with their personal (or married into, in Kerry’s case) fortunes. Clinton has never seen fit to criticize any of that. The editorial doesn’t mention the billionaire behind much of the hard left, namely George Soros, or his bankrolling of pro-Clinton gatekeeper and watchdog Media Matters for America. Clinton hasn’t whined about any of that either.
As for “the spirit of campaign finance reform,” it wasn’t the Supreme Court’s campaign funny money shenanigans in 1996 that got spun into an astroturfed drive for reform. And it wasn’t the Supreme Court that drafted a law that made it easier for the likes of Soros to fund his own shadow campaigns to attack conservatives and generate false media controversies from the shadows. The Supremes ratified much of that law, but Clinton’s 1996 violations prompted the need for “reform” in the first place, and Democrats with the support of “Maverick” McCain were behind the law in the first place. The campaign finance “reform” that Clinton is decrying wouldn’t have happened without his abuses and his own party’s braying.
What actually bothers the Clintons about Bloomberg is that he might put liberal states like New York into play if he runs as an independent, but Clinton is cloaking that realpolitik assessment in the trappings of concern for the “little people” about whom Clinton has never actually cared at all. That’s the truth, and since he was at the center of all that campaign finance history, Clinton is surely aware of it all. But the truth is, as usual, inconvenient to Bill Clinton.

Bill Clinton lied? Oh, wait–he opened his mouth. Of course he was lieing.
Good post as usual, Bryan. Someday I hope to aspire to even half of your writing skills. And insight, too.

When was Florida ever in the Clinton column?
Vizzini on December 26, 2007 at 3:22 PM
Bill knows first hand the impact that someone with lots of dough running for president can have on an election. If it weren’t for Perot in 92 there would have been no President Clinton in the first place. I think Bloomberg will be to Hillary what Perot was to Bush 41.
Nice work, Bryan.

Poor Mr. Clinton, and so influence-deprived…
Entelechy on December 26, 2007 at 3:29 PM
Democrats make their living in politics and live off the fat of the land of special interests, and whatever they can get away with.
The Democrats have been living off the lie that the represent the average person, the poor, the elderly, and of course “the children”. In fact, they are above the law, wealthy and are the most destructive of organizations out to screw the average working person, and this county. The poor and suffering never get ahead voting for these crooks, and curse tax relief and self-reliance as not American.
Clinton is the allegorical figure of this lie.

Sometimes it seems Bill is beginning to believe his own press clippings. Surely he cannot think anyone with a memory can be nieve enough to believe the drivel spewing from his pie hole. Who is he fooling with this kind of BS? Was he speaking at an alzhiemers clinic? Give me a break….

Lots of recent BC behavior point to early-onset dementia–especially the GHWB comments. It’s either that or he doesn’t want the wife to become POTUS and is purposely sabotaging the effort.

Good post, Bryan. We all agree that Bubba’s lying. The question is whether he knows it himself or not.
As for the Sun:
Hillary may have to worry about the NE and the liberal West Coast, but I agree with Vizzini. When was Florida in Hillary’s column? I can’t see it ever being in Bloomberg’s column.
I’m from Florida and I approve this message ;-).

Well, not having the wealthy run would eliminate Hillary, Edwards, Romney…wait a minute, maybe Bill is onto something.
right2bright on December 26, 2007 at 4:15 PM
As for “… would take the electoral votes of New York and California and Florida and Massachusetts out of the Hillary Clinton column and into the Michael Bloomberg column ….”, it is probably the shortness of space compounded by the unneeded detail that caused them to suggest NY would go the Bloomberg column.
I don’t know about the others, but NY will not flip to Bloomberg if he enters the race. On the contrary, it will all but guarantee a Republican win. In the 2004 Presidential, the Dems won 4.31M to 2.96M. Few, if any, of that core 2.96M would go Bloomberg. And Bloomberg need only take 1.36M or about 19% of total, to flip the state. That would be doable for Bloomberg.

A farmer tilling his fields on his John Deer Tractor was suddenly jarred from his daydreams as a huge jet crashed near him in the newly tilled field.
He rushed to the downed plane and began to pull the bodies
clear of the burning plane.
As he worked to bury the dead, black hawk helicopters began to descend into his fields.
A very nervous FBI agent asked him where was all the people on the plane, and excitedly saying that this was Air Force One the President’s plane.
Where is President Clinton the FBI agent demanded.
I buried him said the farmer.
You mean President Clinton is DEAD, said the FBI agent.
Well, said the farmer, he said he wasn’t but you know how those Clintons lie.

Well, Bill and Hill should feel welcome to set an example for other wealthy folks and withdraw from the race.
Somebody should let slick Willie know that an envy boy only chases his tail and never catches any.
Speakup on December 26, 2007 at 5:01 PM
It’s not free, Bubba. It costs a lot of money. Everybody gets the same free speech, but it’s the expensive kind that gets you elected. Sooooo, is Hill gonna share her war chest with Mike Gravel?
Pablo on December 26, 2007 at 5:06 PM
He probably whined about that too.
Speakup on December 26, 2007 at 5:07 PM
I vote the latter. It’s just too weird, the things he’s saying – and he’s narcissistic and evil but not stupid. Wonder if she’s figured it out yet. Probably so – she’s not stupid either. The conversations they’re having over the “grapefruit” these days must be pret-ty interesting.
inviolet on December 26, 2007 at 5:08 PM
No dummy they don’t have more right to free speech. They do have money for TV and Radio ads to have their speech heard by more people. But the homeless guy on the corner can say the exact same things (or the exact opposite) without being thrown in jail.
However the homeless guy doesn’t have the right to force a TV station, or radio station to give him airtime for free. Is this the unfair problem that Clinton is now worried about?
Fine, I’ll bite. What’s the solution? No, let me guess first.
Nationalizing the airwaves and all forms of media under Government control perhaps? I can’t see a way that Clinton would consider a “fair” distribution of these resources, except Government control. And controlling the means of production is a big step in the plans of either Democrats, or Socialists. I can’t tell them apart anymore.
gekkobear on December 26, 2007 at 5:13 PM
So I guess from now on, Bill and Hilary will steer clear of all those rich Hollywood liberals?
Undue influence and all.

Clinton spends most of his time bragging about how rich he is. Only a few weeks ago in Iowa, he said to the audience that he was so angry that Bush tax cuts didn’t “allow people like me to support our troops” by paying more in taxes. Leave aside for a moment the rather easy answer to Clinton that he can, if he wants, make a larger tax payment to the US than is minimally required. He can also donate to the USO and veterans groups. The whole point of his statement was to brag on himself. He also recently said: “People like me don’t need a tax cut”. Just another excuse for childish bragging. But how about this whopper. While ostendibly calling for people to give to charity, Clinton said: “You may not have Bill Gates’ money or Bill Clinton’s connections…” The man is so narcissistic that he wanted to drop Bill Gates name and to brag on himself. The man has no shame. He really is that much of an insecure guy.CI wonder when he was denouncing the access of the rich to political leaders if he included Terry Mccauliff into the mix. This is the Clinton crony who just happened to make millions from World Com before it crashed leaving the little people with worthless paper. Wonder if Bill speaks for them. I feel like a one man research department for hot air and MM.

Amazing isn’t it,Bill single handedly besmirches and destroy’s the Liberal Democrat party, and in the wake
of that political shock wave it inspires an entire
cottage industry of moonbats who are bitter at Republican’s.
Yes that’s right, and from the first cigar until now,Liberals
have been on a quest to somehow get even with what Bill alone has done all by himself and while Hillary brags to the
media how well she bakes cookies, only to find out later that
Hillary is playing the media like a puppet master.
So I guess nobody(on the Left that is)has the smarts or
courage to shut him up,for some unknown reason’s
they(the left)loves to hear him speak, music for Moonbats
I guess!

Best cheap shot against Billy Jeff (made by John Cleese):
There are 3 differences between Britain and America:
1. We speak English.
2. When we hold a World Championship, we actually invite other countries.
3. When we approach our head of state, we kneel on only one knee.

What’s the point of being rich if you can’t unduly influence the political process? See, that’s what separates Bill from the Afghans. He stays bought.

Clinton rich?
He couldn’t afford to keep his cat when he left office.
I like the touch about the ’spirit of campaign finance reform’. Is that one of the three ghosts who visited Scrooge?
I imagine Bill Clinton adjusting his nightcap in his lonely cat-less home on Christmas eve, suddenly visited by the Spirit of Campaign Finance Reform.
It must have really scared him and now he is a changed man

The ol “poor me’ ploy.
So sorry, it does not play well with the informed and the public is becoming more informed than ‘Wild Bill’ or others on the left realize.
I am getting the sense that the left will be sitting around on Nov 5th saying; “what happened here, it was not supposed to go this way, we told better lies than the other side, we deserved to whine-I I I mean win”.
