Video: “The Four Horsemen”

I wasn’t going to inflict it on you but NRO decided to ring in the season by extending the middle finger to atheists so now I feel obliged. All proceeds of the DVD sales go to the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Security Trust, so if there’s a special heathen in your life whom you think would enjoy it — and judging from the e-mails I’ve gotten since we posted this in headlines yesterday, there are some around — you might consider it as a belated Christmas present.

If you’re too busy or not in the mood, I’d recommend at least watching the second clip starting at 18:50 and then again especially at 44:50 as they consider Islam and terrorism. Hitchens may be the de facto leader of America’s atheist hawks but he’s unwilling to make the concession that Harris does, that while all religions might be equally untrue, not all are equally dangerous. Hitch also thinks we’re likely doomed to global destruction by theocrats gone mad, although he does name one last, best hope for secularists hoping to stave off that outcome. Watch the clip to see whom he has in mind.

Allah is just tweaked that yet another holiday has passed and his iphone has not arrived :(

lorien1973 on December 24, 2007 at 1:08 PM

Hitchens agrees — with respect to jihadists. I can recall a thread or two on this very site about some big rally of Taliban nutjobs somewhere, and the comments inevitably run along the lines of “target-rich environment” or “why don’t we just bomb them????” Stones and glass houses, sir.

SECOND LOOK AT TALIBAN NUTJOBS!

How dare anyone mention Atheism on your pagan holiday. Too bad you’re not so offended by the orgy of crass commercialism that your “holiest” day has become. Poor things. I’m sure a good ol’ fashioned witch burning would make it all better.

Heh, and since we all know Atheists have declared a War on Christmas, here’s a game to hone your skills, its Joe Cartoon, so consider that your content warning. Joe must have been looking to fasttrack himself for a Internet Police segment with MKH and Bill-O.

The atheism thing is just boring.

Speaking as an atheist myself, watching four atheists talk to each other about atheism seems, well, tedious. I’m sure they thought it was fascinating.

Pagan holiday…yes the old pagan holiday canard. Actual documentation of what the pagans were celebrating and exactly what rituals they employed in their celebratory process seem to be in rather short supply. No one disputes that there was once, several thousand years ago, a pagan holiday celebrated at approximately the same time of year.

That however is about all Christmas and Saturnalia have in common.

doriangrey on December 24, 2007 at 1:25 PM

I watched both hours yesterday and I was struck by Hitchen’s confession that he didn’t want to see religion eradicated because he’d have no one left to argue with, and his equating all religions as equally dangerous. I think his stance on both give some insight into his thinking on all of it. His is more of a philosophical argument against a concept. The details don’t much matter.

I wish they had spent more time talking about how offended religious people get at any challenge to their beliefs vs the perception that atheists never have any right to be offended by anything a religious person says to them. Because that is very true. We atheists are considered rude and insulting, so therefore any rude and insulting comeback is justified in the theists mind. In that respect, theists are just as bad as liberals when it comes to nasty, dirty, hateful, arguments. Liberals say they wish someone would kill Dick Cheney. Theists delight in the prospect of atheists burning in Hell for all eternity.

How dare Allah post this on Christmas Eve? That “outrage” was predictable.

Religious people really have no clue how offensive they are. The last comment I made on this blog was when that ex-cop shot the church shooter. “God was with me’. Nice. Two young girls were shot and killed before God paid attention that day. Years ago there were three boys in my town who fell through thin ice. Two brothers of about 8 and 10, and the older brothers best friend. Both brothers died, but the friend survived. His grandmother was quoted in the paper saying “God was watching out for him that day”. Nice. I’m sure that gave a lot of comfort to the parents of the two boys God was too busy to save.

Offensive? Doesn’t even begin to cover how hurtful, hateful, and uncaring, religious people can be. And not just about, or to, atheists. That’s very predictable and expected from people whose minds are so warped by their beliefs that you can’t really expect them to treat atheists any differently.

But I’ll never understand their lack of compassion for each other.

Jaynie59 on December 24, 2007 at 1:29 PM

Dennett, Hitchens, et al. are all intelligent people, so they are a step up from your typical Hollywood type preaching the merits of Chavez. But commercial success–the fact that other secularists like their stuff–does not demonstrate that their opinions are better than those of any other educated person. Just as the commercial success of a TV evangelist’s book–driven by sales of religious folk–do not make his or her religious or psychological opinions superior to those of anyone else.

For the most part, reading any of the writings of the ‘four horsemen’ on religion reminds me of listening to students in universities outside the U.S. spouting off about U.S. politics. There’s not much knowledge about the particulars of U.S. politics, and the objects of dispute get homogenized into vague, convenient terms like ‘neo-con’.

We normally expect that traditions as complex as U.S. common law or 19th century German philosophy or Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting require a great deal of study and knowledge, and sympathetic at that, before a person can make useful criticisms of what is going on them. Andrew Wiles is a world authority about number theory, but don’t expect to see many U.S. law schools inviting him to deliver lectures on the history and importance of 4th amendment Constitutional Law in the United States. Probably shouldn’t pay attention to his stock picks for the entertainment industry either.

Krydor on December 24, 2007 at 2:20 PM

My non-believer friends have always used the “reason” argument to try to prove that God does not exist. But to me, that argument turns in on itself. If Man has the capacity to understand everything, that fact would preclude the possibility of there being any other entity in the universe with more intellectual and reasoning capacity than Man. There could be no thought or deed that we ourselves cannot accomplish.

At the very point that an atheist admits the very real possibility that a race of beings exists in, say, the Andromeda Galaxy that might have more intellectual or reasoning capacity than human beings, then thy must admit that there probably is a God. Because the logical conclusion to admitting that there may be a race of beings somewhere that has superior intellectual and logical capacities to Man, then they must admit that there is a race of beings that is superior to that race, and so on, until you come to a being that could, and did, create the universe.

Also, the universe started at a specific point in time, and is expanding at an ever-increasing rate, and will eventually grow cold and die. It’s not as if the universe has forever and will forever contract and expand. Therefore, it was intentionally created by some one.

I look at the human relationship to God as, in a way, being similar to the relationship of dogs to humans. Dogs live in an environment largely constructed by humans. Dogs do not have the capacity to understand how that environment works. They can’t understand how a house works, or a car, or an aircraft, or a boat, or a freeway, even though they are in and around those things all the time. You could spend years explaining to your dog how a car works but they just don’t have the capacity to understand. So humans set out certain rules of behavior for their dogs and, as long as the dogs obey those rules, the dogs live a happy and healthy life in harmony with their lords and masters. The headstrong dogs who think they know everything wind up dead beside the road. Hitchens, et al, reminds me of a dead dog beside the road.

JiangxiDad on December 24, 2007 at 2:36 PM

Why would we? The Four Horsemen and other atheists aren’t actually a threat to anyone. In Christian theology the idea of going ballistic on anyone requires that they be a genuine threat to life and property. The spread of atheist philosophy isn’t a life threatening event, it isn’t even a threat to Christianity.

Other than a pretty small segment of the atheist population which is militantly anti-Christian most atheists are fairly nice descent people. Even the majority of the militant anti-Christian atheists are fairly nice when they arent pushing their militant atheism.

The notion of harming an atheist just because they refuse or cannot believe in god pretty much goes against everything that a genuine Christian believes. Have no fear my friend, that ability to defend our lives, the lives of our loved ones and our property is very much still alive in Christianity.

But as I said, it is reserved for those who are a genuine threat, not people who a great many of us are honored to count as friends and fellow countrymen.

The atheists don’t want to understand. When your god is yourself, when you worship yourself on the altar of hedonism and narcissism, God simply gets in the way.
OhEssYouCowboys on December 24, 2007 at 2:29 PM

I am an evangelical Bible-believing Christian myself. But I believe this comment only adds confusion, and not clarity, for our atheist friends.

Your Romans 1 passage really deals with idolatry, and that impacts all of us, including Christians.

Your comment overlooks the intellectual barriers that may get in the way for our atheist friends. I believe it is our task as Christians to remove those intellectual barriers by presenting a clear, rational case for the truth of Christianity by being faithful to the Scriptures.

I do not pretend that this will win over every atheist.

After all, Romans 1 does say there is a “heart issue”

(on the ultimate level–it is a “heart issue”. Every one, including atheists, have faith.)

involved in the acceptance or non-acceptance of certain propositions, namely, the existence of God.

But this approach is biblical.

your god is yourself, when you worship yourself on the altar of hedonism and narcissism

As set forth above, Romans 1:22 – Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
OhEssYouCowboys on December 24, 2007 at 2:29 PM

Furthermore, your “when your god is yourself, when you worship on the altar of hedonism and narcissism” quote adds further confusion when atheists look at the lives of supposedly professing Christians.

Are the lives of Christians free from the altar of hedonism and narcissim?

I turn on the TV and see TV preachers, or I look at the best-selling supposedly Christian authors, and I see hedonism and narcissism displayed all the time in the lives of Christians.

I look at my life, and I struggle with sin personally.

My point is, instead of drawing attention to the personal lives of atheists by accusing them of being hedonists, we could decide to draw their attention to Jesus Christ, the Epistemological Logos of the Book of Hebrews and the Gospel of John, the one who brings life to our world.

On an epistemological level, atheism has too many philosophical problems. The question of defeating naturalism or atheism is not the most difficult question.

The harder question for Christians is:

are we able to provide a life-giving alternative to all the false counterfeits this temporal world has to offer?

Just patiently waiting for the yearly “get hammered with the father-in-law” festivities to commence.

Heh. My brother-in-law and my granddad had this ritual also. Sadly, Gramps passed away last year (and my dad doesn’t drink) so BIL will hoist one–or more–in memoriam.

Merry Christmas to all.

C’mon Baldi. We’ve been reading each other’s comments for months.

I find the atheist stuff so pointless and irrelevant, so I got bored and was causing some mischief. Sorry.

JiangxiDad on December 24, 2007 at 3:39 PM

That’s what I thought. :-) Just making sure.

Apparently a couple of atheists are taking your mischief personally. Actually, watching that is pretty funny also.

wccawa on December 24, 2007 at 3:46 PM

JiangxiDad. One of the worst things that happened in Russia after the fall of the Communist regime was a resurrection of “Pravoslaviye”.
The idiotic dogmas of the Russian Orthodox Church are mind-boggling. It’s probably the most ridiculous form of Christianity ever! Russia would be better of without it, imho.

You know the kid I am, and always will be. Having friends like you grants that more so. Merry Christmas to you and family, and so happy for you,

Entelechy on December 24, 2007 at 4:05 PM

Yeah I’ll run right out and do that. But first you must imagine an Atheist making the same “Joke” about assaulting Christians. I’m sure you would all have a good chuckle and say “Why that rascally Atheist! What a wonderfully rogueish sense of humor. Ha ha ha. The jokes on us! Merry Christmas you impish trickster you.”

I’m sorry for your apparent “confusion.” Let’s go over this, shall we?

2 Timothy 3:1 – This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. [2] For men shall be lovers of their own selves, … proud, blasphemers, … unholy, [4] … lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God; [13] But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

Romans 1:21 – Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. [22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, … [25] Who changed the truth of God into a lie, …

jaime on December 24, 2007 at 2:22 PM

The atheists don’t want to understand. When your god is yourself, when you worship yourself on the altar of hedonism and narcissism, God simply gets in the way.

As set forth above, Romans 1:22 – Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

OhEssYouCowboys on December 24, 2007 at 2:29 PM

“For men shall be lovers of their own selves lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God” concerns hedonism and naricissism. That anybody could be “confused” at this plain meaning is … confusing.

That they “became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened” concerns the vanity involved in the worship of oneself, and thus, the rejection of God – which necessarily follows such vanity. One who, out of vanity, makes onself his own god, has room for nothing else. It’s kind of like not being able to worship both money and God. There is room for only one.

I’m afraid that your desire to wax philosophic about the Scripture quoted above may be the reason for your ongoing claims of “confusion.” Is it projection on your part? Does your philosophy trump the clear meaning of Scripture? In this regard, and unlike you and others who desire to enter into philosophical discussions ad nauseum about Scripture [thus placing philosophy above Scripture], I do not intend to enter into another 20 posts, in an effort to respond to your anticipated 40 philosophical posts.

That’s the problem with trying to turn Scripture into a philosophical discussion. Sometimes, if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck – it is a duck. Notwithstanding any philosophical desire to make it a goose. The Scripture that I quoted is clear and unambiguous – and no philosophical discussion can change this fact.

OhEssYouCowboys on December 24, 2007 at 4:23 PM

You are wrong on a couple of points above.

Remember it is so easy to take jabs at atheists and possess a disrespectful, condescending tone.

The real challenge is to obey Scripture by possessing a Christ-honoring humble attitude that accurately understands that the spiritual idolatry of Romans 1 applies to everyone, including professing Christians. All of us are idol-makers.

The human heart is an idol-factory.

The atheist acts in furtherance of hedonism, narcissism and vanity BECAUSE of his religion – the worship of himself.

The Christian acts in furtherance of same in CONTRAVENTION of his religion.

Your attempt to equate the two is misguided. The Christian is a sinner. It is impossible for him to not be. Thus, Jesus Christ was necessary. The atheist knows no sin, because his god doesn’t recognize it in his acts of hedonism, narcissism and vanity.

Allahpundit – Admittedly, the truth is depressing.

The truth is depressing?

From Luke Chapter 2 starting at the 9th verse:

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

The truth doesn’t depress me at all. It gives me great hope for the future.

Merry Christmas to all.

I am irritated as hell with Allah right now, but to criticize him for posting this is ludicrous.

I don’t choose to watch this right now because I don’t wish to poison my Christmas with cranks like Hitchens and company, but I think it’s important and will check it out in a few days. I also welcome an opportunity to help out Aayan Hirsi Ali.

Meanwhile since Allah says he is short on material, here is a sweet and charming story from Politico. The title should serve as ample warning for those who might get their hackles up that I am posting this.

Romney knows Bupkis.

Merry Christmas to all!

I have seen the first half hour or so of the video, and I wasn’t offended. Imputing offensive motives to AP misses the point.

He wants hits to HotAir and this thread seems to be successful towards that end.

Did you read the story? Quite the misleading headline. It does not speak ill of the Mitten at all. Besides, I am irritated with Allah because of the manner in which he chose to he speak ill of the Mitten, not the other way around.

A charming offering on Christmas Eve however,
just as Hitch starts to get insufferable (Amish=Jihadists)
he says the 82nd Airbourne is the only defense against theocracy. That’s why I love the man.

I’m not offended AP, and I hope you won’t be offended that I prefer not to watch a self egrandizing ass know it all explain to me why I am a fool for participating in a cult holiday and belonging to an idiotic group that acually believes in a supreme being and the hearafter.

I think instead I will try to enjoy my cult holiday and wish Mr. Hitchens a Merry Christmas.

I’d be willing to bet that no Christian on this blog even bothered to watch the two videos posted. It’s understandable, of course, but still disappointing in two ways: that I had to read through comments from people here discussed in the video and that some people are so adamant in their misguided beliefs that they can’t even bother to watch a discussion on religion by people who don’t share their belief.

I bought Hitchens’ book and read it for crying out loud. Its always assumed that sales of his book indicate a growing trend of atheism but there’s no proof of it. I haven’t watched the videos no but I’ve been running around all day wrapping presents, what do you expect? I tried to engage you in a discussion of religion vs. atheism about six months ago by asking you to read The Grand Inquisitor by Dostoevsky and consider the implications and your response was to ignore every comment I posted.
