Video: “The Four Horsemen”

I wasn’t going to inflict it on you but NRO decided to ring in the season by extending the middle finger to atheists so now I feel obliged. All proceeds of the DVD sales go to the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Security Trust, so if there’s a special heathen in your life whom you think would enjoy it — and judging from the e-mails I’ve gotten since we posted this in headlines yesterday, there are some around — you might consider it as a belated Christmas present.
If you’re too busy or not in the mood, I’d recommend at least watching the second clip starting at 18:50 and then again especially at 44:50 as they consider Islam and terrorism. Hitchens may be the de facto leader of America’s atheist hawks but he’s unwilling to make the concession that Harris does, that while all religions might be equally untrue, not all are equally dangerous. Hitch also thinks we’re likely doomed to global destruction by theocrats gone mad, although he does name one last, best hope for secularists hoping to stave off that outcome. Watch the clip to see whom he has in mind.

Aren’t you interested in the truth Will?
Zetterson on December 24, 2007 at 10:53 AM
Admittedly, the truth is depressing. Although it has the advantage of being true.
Allahpundit on December 24, 2007 at 10:55 AM
If Jennifer Graham’s prose constitutes give anyone the finger I sure as he11 wish someone would give me the finger. If anything she does a wonderful job of describing how an awful lot of us of faith feel about the Hitch.
It’s OK AP, you can admit that you just couldn’t resist poking the faithful in the eye on Christmas Eve, we understand and forgive you. You are after all, what you are…

Merry X-mas!

Huh? I read the article, and maybe you could say it gave the finger to Hutch, but not athiests in general.
Or is the High Priest Hutchinator such a revered figure in the athiest community that any attack on him is an attack on your belief system?

Sam Harris, ladies and gentlemen, exemplar of rigorous philosophical and moral thinking
WillBarrett on December 24, 2007 at 11:01 AM
It’s more that I’m strapped for content and this dropped in my lap yesterday. Although I figured someone would accuse me of that, notwithstanding my post a week or two ago criticizing the atheists who taunted Christians by putting up an atheist “holiday tree” next to the Christmas tree on some town square. Like the Horsemen say at the beginning of the first clip, religious people love to feel offended. I expect this thread will provide another example.
Allahpundit on December 24, 2007 at 11:02 AM
Merry Christmas, Allah.
Tom Blogical on December 24, 2007 at 11:02 AM
At least you can admit that Allah. Nothing worse than an atheist who thinks his beliefs are somehow WONDERFUL AND UPLIFTING. I prefer my atheists of the Camus variety.
WillBarrett on December 24, 2007 at 11:02 AM
Hitchens agrees — with respect to jihadists. I can recall a thread or two on this very site about some big rally of Taliban nutjobs somewhere, and the comments inevitably run along the lines of “target-rich environment” or “why don’t we just bomb them????” Stones and glass houses, sir.
Allahpundit on December 24, 2007 at 11:04 AM
I can’t reconcile the belly-button.
I mean, if I was created in God’s image…

Oh, I know. We got us some bellicose m-fers on this here website. I think half of the people that post on this site are bat-sh!t crazy.
WillBarrett on December 24, 2007 at 11:07 AM
Sorry AP, but that has to be one of the dumbest things you’ve written in a long, long time.
Someone suggesting that a gathering of Taliban be bombed isn’t doing so because of their religious beliefs, but because we’re, you know, at friggen war with them.
Hollowpoint on December 24, 2007 at 11:11 AM
Maybe my sense of irony is still counting sheep, but I hardly see this as an infliction. Now, were you to post a video X-mas card from Islamic Rage Boy, that might qualify as an infliction.
thejackal on December 24, 2007 at 11:11 AM
You strapped for content? Say it isnt so…Here let me fix this one for you…
Do I really have to remind you that being offended is exactly the reason that atheists have been systematically stripping every reference to Jesus Christ and Christianity from the public sphere in America for the last five decades?
doriangrey on December 24, 2007 at 11:14 AM
I thnk therein lies the difference. Target rich environment of people hell bent on slaughtering me and my family. Please do not confuse these people with ordinary muslims that goes on about his life living it perfectly within the constructs of modern Islam.

High Road Mania!!
Zetterson on December 24, 2007 at 11:20 AM
Really? How many rallies do you see in front of the ACLU when they get Christian symbols removed from Courthouses and such? How many rallies and rage cries do you see in front of newspapers for editorials going after Christians?
I can pull up article after article of ATHEISTS screaming about “being offended” at the nativity scene and Christmas tree and saying Merry Christmas at Wal Mart. So if anything, it is the atheists that own that ballpark. Just like you said, stones and glasshouses my friend.
broker1 on December 24, 2007 at 11:20 AM
But again, the idea that any practicing Christian would endorse war against the Taliban exposes the silliness of Christianity. Reading the New Testament, it’s quite clear that Jesus thinks we should love our enemies and turn the other cheek.
The appropriate Christian response to the Taliban, Osama bin Laden, or Iran would be to talk to them, not make war against them, regardless if they attack(ed) us or not.
Enrique on December 24, 2007 at 11:21 AM
Incidentally, here’s a quick moment of atheist self-promotion: I declare war on Christmas in my latest column for 411mania. It’s a tear-jerker. :)
Enrique on December 24, 2007 at 11:24 AM
Atheists have no idea what the truth is.
2Brave2Bscared on December 24, 2007 at 11:28 AM
I still can’t get over them calling themselves the “horsemen.” Not only borrowing an image from Christianity, but there’s also an amount of hubris in claiming the title for themselves. I just think it is funny.
Merry Christmas Allah. I hope you have a good Christmas Eve and Day with friends or family – or whoever you spend time with. Lots of food, lots of beer!
nailinmyeye on December 24, 2007 at 11:29 AM
I think this is very RUDE of you Allahpundit! On the eve of one of the most celebrated days for Christians you are going to post this.
-
It’s bad enough that you constantly push your bigotry against believers throughout the year even more than a Jehovah Witness who forgets he’s already called and been to your house numerous times already.
-
This is yet another SPIT in the face of your Christian readers. Give any excuse you like (NRO ect…) it does not matter.
-
This is WRONG!
-
Merry Christmas to ALL!
abinitioadinfinitum on December 24, 2007 at 11:30 AM
Christianity isn’t a suicide pact- the “turn the other cheek” quote had to do with relationships between individuals.
Hollowpoint on December 24, 2007 at 11:30 AM
Very classy my friend. As a Catholic, that doesnt bother me. Just proves my point on who gets more offended. Either way “Happy Holidays”.
broker1 on December 24, 2007 at 11:31 AM
Haven’t we been over this over and over and over and over again here.
I also find it quite ironic that an atheist presumes to tell me what the “appropriate Christian response” is. Sorry man – just sayin’.
nailinmyeye on December 24, 2007 at 11:31 AM
I apologize for posting this video of a quiet, civil conversation about religion which you’re not obliged to watch.
And to think: They accuse religious people of looking for reasons to be offended.
Allahpundit on December 24, 2007 at 11:33 AM
I did not watch it and won’t. Just the fact you post it, I think is WRONG.
abinitioadinfinitum on December 24, 2007 at 11:35 AM
I’m not what you would call a deeply religious fellow, but one thing I do believe in is Live and Let Live. That being said, posting this thread topic on Christmas Eve exhibits very poor judgement and is just plain unnecessary.
Content shortage?
That was weak.

In the first video, at 20:25, one of them (Dawkins?) talks about con-artists and says, “They make a virtue out of trust, and as soon as you start exhibiting any suspicion of the con-man he gets all hurt on you… plays the hurt feelings card, and reminds you how wonderful taking it on faith is.”
I don’t think he was referring to Huckabee specifically, but he was the first person I thought of.

Spare us the “Good will to ALL” when you clearly don’t mean it. Now have some egg nog and give me your car keys (I made the nog, and its Hitch’s recipe).
thejackal on December 24, 2007 at 11:43 AM
Come on – you don’t think that is a little over the top? We love our neighbors, remember…and it is Christmas…
nailinmyeye on December 24, 2007 at 11:43 AM
Gee Allah you can post whatever you want whenever you want to…after all you are Allah. Just like I can fart next to you at dinner just because I can…but I won’t because that is not what polite people do. We don’t offend others for sport. Impolite people rather enjoy offending others and then comically they get their back up when called on it.
Atheists seem to be as a whole very impolite people…perhaps that has something to do with the fact that many of them, my wife excepted, do not seem to accept that there is such a thing as morals and tolerance.
PierreLegrand on December 24, 2007 at 11:43 AM
Awesome! I’ll take some!
nailinmyeye on December 24, 2007 at 11:44 AM
Another valid reason that you should not be speaking on behalf of Jesus Christ or Christianity.
doriangrey on December 24, 2007 at 11:45 AM
I think there are helpful religious insights generated by the critiques offered by modern atheism.
Some of the atheist critiques are unfair and not helpful. Others are very helpful and informative.
I think years ago this type of thinking “sealed the deal” for me in favor of Christian theism. Rationality, immaterial abstract entities, logical necessity, propositions, law of non-contradiction, all of these—and more—cannot be eliminated or “reduced to” electro-chemical states or physical causes. The inability for these immaterial entities to be reduced may constitute a larger argument for Christian theism. In short, “An Argument from Reason” can be meaningfully constructed.
To be honest with ya, the Epistemic Latch Argument sealed the deal for me personally.
ColtsFan on December 24, 2007 at 11:45 AM
I’m just about to sign off for Christmas and although I’m an atheist, I would like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas. (I mean that sincerely, not trying to cause any offense).
FloatingRock on December 24, 2007 at 11:47 AM
Hitchens on religions at about 52 minutes of the second clip:
As a catholic I do like listening to Hitchens. That statement is the harshest I have ever heard from him. And no, Im not offended. I could care less.
broker1 on December 24, 2007 at 11:47 AM
I’m not offending anyone for sport. You’re imputing that motive to me just because it fits your stereotype of an atheist and makes us a tad easier to demonize. If I wanted to offend, I’d go find something genuinely offensive and derogatory and post it. I refer you again to the first 20 minutes or so of the first clip. If the mere presence of this video on this site within some arbitrary temporal window of proximity to Christmas is enough to cause such consternation, you guys are in for a rough life.
Allahpundit on December 24, 2007 at 11:50 AM
And since we’re all being so nice and friendly this Holiday season, here’s a suitably controversial religious-themed, politically incorrect joke I heard while I was in Saudi Arabia:
The great rabbi Fleischman died and went to Heaven. He was met at the pearly gates by St. Peter, who was delighted to see the celebrated rabbi.
“Rabbi Fleischman! Welcome to Heaven. I can’t wait to show you around.”
St. Pete took the rabbi’s hand and escorted him into paradise, introducing him to all and sundry.
“This,” said St. Pete, “is Jesus. Jesus, meet rabbi Fleischman.”
“Rabbi!” Jesus said, grabbing Fleischman’s hand and shaking it vigorously. “It’s swell to see you. Can I get you anything? You want a drink?”
“A drink?” said the rabbi. “Sure. I’m a little parched after the journey. A martini, perhaps?”
Jesus turned, snapped his fingers, and shouted, “Mohammed!”
Have a wonderful holiday everyone and don’t get too wrapped up in worldly affairs. They never do anyone any good anyway.
thejackal on December 24, 2007 at 11:50 AM
As well you should, this is no quite civil conversation, its a very calculated intentional insult to those of faith. It is every bit as poignant as those of the Christian faith sitting around having a quite civil conversation discussing how atheists will spend eternity burning in hell.
doriangrey on December 24, 2007 at 11:51 AM
Even though the closest we’ve come to “global destruction” in the past was at the hands of atheists and/or social Darwinists.
RightWinged on December 24, 2007 at 11:54 AM
Then why are you intentionally offending your Christian readers? Do not say that you are not because you know that you are.
doriangrey on December 24, 2007 at 11:54 AM
Saying “I don’t believe this is true” is tantamount to fantasizing about infidels being tortured? If you say so. In any case, I’m not offended by talk like that. You’re welcome to it in this very thread if you like. You won’t be banned.
And once again, stop imputing motives to me. It was not a calculated insult, no matter how much you may wish it were so that you might better play the aggrieved victim. If you don’t care for the subject matter, don’t watch the clip. You won’t be banned for that either.
Allahpundit on December 24, 2007 at 11:55 AM
Hitchens at the very end just lost all credibility:
Go ahead, put secularists and aethists in office and see how long it takes for that 82nd Airborne to come home and be decomissioned.
Aethists dont bother me if they want rail on my religion. Its the arrogance of those same people that I find distasteful. Allah can post what he wants on his website, it didnt bother me one bit, I enjoyed watching it.

Yes, that’s why I write posts criticizing “spiteful, antagonistic morons” who bait Christians for no good reason. Because I’m secretly one of them.
You’re intent on being offended and playing the victim no matter what I say or what evidence I offer, so I won’t bother continuing to try. Fitting for this subject matter, though.
Allahpundit on December 24, 2007 at 11:59 AM
Agreed. I’ve always wondered what interest the truth is to atheists. I usually don’t participate in these flame wars because there are extremists on both sides (woe to those who clicked and are offended), but that comment is so absolutely ironic it takes the cake.

Posting this video should not be offensive to any Christian. They are just words and not really a threat to anyone.
It is clear from watching that they and their fellow travelers are working backwards. They start with the proposition that religion is bad and then find on the ways to prove it (i.e., jihadi’s do bad things because of religion).
So why did Stalin do bad things? How about Mao?
That fact is that any militant ideology can inspire people to do bad things. Some of those ideologies include a particular belief in God, and some include a devout non-belief…but theism is not the determining factor.
But the Four Horsemen want us to believe it is.
Nosferightu on December 24, 2007 at 12:00 PM
At the 44:50 mark… how does Santa not get the question at first? This is one of the more annoying aspects of intellectual critics. He seems like a nice enough, knowledgeable and interesting fellow, but that segment where he cant get that “should we criticize all religions with the same brush” concept made them all seem like a typical “talk to hear myself talk” person. Annoyed me.
I’ll move past that and listen to more now ;)
By the way, at the 18:50 segment. It’s funny that they realize that it’s not just muslims who can be barbaric… I think Hitchens brings up Bosnia? Or wherever it was that Christians were more “barbaric” and muslims were on the receiving end. From that they conclude that… all religions are evil! Natch… couldnt be that people are evil or barbaric and use whatever power is within their culture. Secularism, religion, ecological … whatever.
Guns dont kill people…

Hey, be cool, friends-it’s Christmas almost. Count me as one of the Christians who is not offended by such fare as we see here-the entire point of atheism or agnosticism is to confirm that Christians have it wrong. I believe atheists and agnostics have it wrong,so there you go.
I enjoy the work of James Randi when he goes after the hucksters and snake oil people; that he lumps Christians in with charlatans is a shame, but I still enjoy his work, and I have a little Christmas present for you: James Randi is reminiscing about his life and career on a blogcast available through iTunes; just query his name at the store and it will show up. Friend of Asimov, employee of…Alice Cooper? Give it a listen, friends, and Merry Christmas, all.
Doug on December 24, 2007 at 12:13 PM
Allah, i am not going to watch the clips in their entirety, though I did listen to the highlights you recommended. Frankly, these guys send chills down my spine.
At the same time, I have heard Hitchens defending the war effort numerous times on Hewitt’s show and at least once on Prager’s. Besides having a stentorian voice that makes me envious, Hitchens does a masterful job of defending the War effort.
However, as a Christian, I find Hitchens amusingly skewed and distorted in his views of everyday life. Recent example: He speaks of Mike Huckabee with obvious scorn (for believing in creation) and, yet, in the next breath, calls John Edwards something like “a very nice fellow.” Huh? For ALL his faults (and Huck has too many for me to support him for the Republican nomination), I would vote for him 1000 times over before I would vote for Edwards.
Now, will I admit that my biblically-informed world-view makes me seem skewed and distorted in my outlook to you and Hitchens? Gladly: NONE of us is truly objective.
Nonetheless, I am cognizant that many atheists do much social good for their fellow man, and I would never deny that. I will also acknowledge that there have in all likelihood been atheists in America since its founding.
Nonetheless, a look at the way that the Soviet Union was run back in the day, a look at the way Red China is currently being administrated with respect to, say, religious liberty, and — closer to home — a look at the way the NEA desires to run our public schools today, confirms for me that it is far better to be an atheist living in the midst of a not-always-appreciative professing Christian majority than it is to be a member of a Christian minority in a society declared to be officially atheist and run by avowedly faith-oppressing atheists.
Furthermore, may I suggest that, in all likelihood, neither you nor I would be here having this discussion if the original 13 colonies had been founded as atheist societies.
So, it appears that we must agree to disagree, but I am VERY happy to have you and Hitchens on my side in the War on Terror.
Thus, I won’t wish you a Merry Christmas (a la NRO), but I will wish you a Happy New Year. Will you drink to that?

He seemed very pleased with the United States for standing up to theocracy, as I think he put it, militarily. He also made it quite clear that “latently” all religions are equally dangerous. At the end of the day, would it just be those 4 left alive (plus Allah!) if it were up to Hitch? Damn man.

And it’s not just atheists. Substituted any other profession/animal, and it’s high comedy. Four priests, four milkmen, four politicians, four Ronulans, four jihadis– well, maybe not the jihadis. We know the jihadis might just do something dumb like that.

Criticize Hitchens and his kind all you please, but don’t deny that atheists make life so much more comforting to Christians because now they have someone to feel superior to.
A true Christian would not be offended by Hitchens; a true Christian holds to their faith and keeps their eyes on the ball.
If you want to express moral outrage and superiority, there’s another religion that might be more suitable to your tastes.

I got bored in the first minute. Puffed up, self-back-patting-intellectuals discussing ANYTHING is boring as He11. Much less listening to them impress themselves on a subject that NO ONE (but the dead) has answers to.
On to the next (hopefully less self-important) thread!

Lol that is a good one.

No offense, Allah. It’s always interesting to see what you’ll post next.

Heh. I was gonna make a similar line, but amish did it better, so I’ll second it.

SECOND LOOK AT GODLESS SCUM!

Nice to see that the good natured ribbing hasn’t caused you to loose your sense of humor.

Allah, if you are actually interested in discussing this topic, I will do so with you. I really can’t sit and watch an hour video on it though.
For starters, are you completely convinced there is no higher intelligence? You are 100% solid atheist, and no percentage of you doubts that? No percentage is agnostic? Perhaps even gnostic in the sense of believing in the powers within oneself? Since you brought it up, I’m just curious as to a few more details in your personal beliefs.

Oh, and by the way…How are we suppose to get a second look at the godless scum, when we have never actually had a first look at the godless scum? Or is the second look in this case a Mitt Romney kind of look?

I am an atheist. OK…that said, I never, ever would put myself in a group consisting of the four above. If I believe whatever I believe, then I am to be left alone to believe it. If, my belief says I must proselytize, then I suppose I must. But, the majority of my family, friends and neighbors are religious and none proselytize me. They are very decent, good, hard working and fair people who understand civility: do not talk about religion or politics! O.k. who said they also have to be fun? But, that is my point you see, the four above discount God…O.K., but then why do they have this insatiable need to PROSELYTIZE not only their position, but damn everyone else’s? Who are they? Who, do they think they are? So, they are “learned” males who are users of words in wonderful, inventive and often twisted ways, but just who do the hell do they think they are? The four will, as I will, and my spouse already has, face the truth when we have taken our last breath. It will then be too late to come back and let you all know the score. I am an atheist, but am ashamed of the four above!!

A US-led coalition is at war with the Taliban so your point is not well taken.
