Huck to Iowans: Don’t let Romney buy the election

posted at 1:08 pm on December 24, 2007 by Allahpundit

To which Mitt might smartly reply, “Better to buy than be bought.”

Fair or not? Romney came by his fortune honestly, through his talents as a manager and investor (although being a son of George surely didn’t hurt in building business connections), and his campaign’s done a bang-up job of raising money out of all proportion to his popularity nationwide, notwithstanding the $17 million of his own dough that he’s injected into the campaign. Still, after all his flip-flopping and the fact that his candidacy hasn’t captivated anyone except Hugh Hewitt and the guy at My Man Mitt, there’s a certain how’d-this-happen quality to his being poised to take Iowa and New Hampshire and waltz to the nomination. Although I guess that’s less a critique of Romney than of voters who can be swayed simply by the sheer volume of advertising they see for one candidate.

It may be that I’m more sensitive to this than most conservatives because I live in a city governed by the most grotesque example of the phenomenon, who’s threatening to show Mitt what real money can do when it wants to buy the presidency. Don’t knock Huck too hard for this, in other words, because you may find yourself mouthing the same complaint six months from now.

I leave you with this, also from the Politico piece. I said the other day that his foreign policy piece was irrelevant to the primary. Here’s why:

[H]is foreign policy is not Huckabee’s main appeal with the audiences he speaks to in Iowa.

“Well, he is not afraid to say, ‘Merry Christmas,’” Gary Thies of Mapleton said when asked after the Sioux City event why he’s supporting Huckabee.

And why is that important?

“Because that’s the most important thing in my life,” Thies responds with an icy glare. “That’s what we’re doing here. Those are the principles that made this country great.”

Exit question: Why would a “Christian leader” be setting churches back $25,000 to speak?

Heck of a good question. Even as child sitting in a pew at Our Lady of the Perpetual Collection Plate I knew something wasn’t quite, uh, kosher. You’ve hit the nail on the head with Huckabee, he reminds me of a televangelist not a president.

trubble on December 24, 2007 at 1:15 PM

With this motley group of contenders, the only thing we are looking for is the one who will do the least damage. That is certainly no one from the Democratic Party, and it isn’t Huckabee.

Well, didn’t Jesus gouge everybody that he ministered to? Oh, wait–no, he didn’t. That’s just unbelievably shameless and crass, especially during a run for President. The more we find out about Elmer Gantrabee, the lower he sinks.

I can’t wait to hear how the Huckabites attempt to spin this, because there’s no way you could make it look good.

ReubenJCogburn on December 24, 2007 at 1:34 PM

Well, it ain’t gonna be Huckabee. If I HAD to put my money on someone at this point in the race, I’d bet on McCain.

I’m not supporting him either, but if I was going to call the R nom at this point out of these candidates, I’d have to say it’s going to be McCain. Rudy even said that he’d vote for McCain if he wasn’t running in an earlier debate.

But it’s not going to be Huckabee. As candidates begin to drop out of the race toward the end of Jan, those votes are going somewhere, and my bet is that they go to McCain.

ThackerAgency on December 24, 2007 at 1:37 PM

That’s Huck, ‘don’t listen to my policy statements, my rival is evil’. That should be enough for you to decide.

Huck wins the nom and I’m out. Makes me a traitor to the cause? Hang me then.

Limerick on December 24, 2007 at 1:41 PM

What plays in Iowa will not play elsewhere. The two holy warriors will cancel themselves out. Rudy will resurge — unless McCain sucks his support prior to 2/5, then it’ll be McCain.

tommylotto on December 24, 2007 at 1:53 PM

Makes me a traitor to the cause? Hang me then.

I’m am so sick of that weak argument coming from the pundits. The republic isn’t going to come crashing down around us because we refuse to vote for weak candidates. The RNC tried to guilt with that same horseshit after the 2006 debacle. If the GOP gets spanked, the RNC and the GOP leadership has no one to blame but themselves. Pretty soon they’ll start taking these elections seriously and start looking for members in the GOP that care more about the country then their own rise to power.
If either Huckabee, Romney or McCain gets the nomination, I’m out also. I don’t care much for Rudy or Fred but I think I could vote for them without making myself physically ill.

I thought Iowa and NH are all about meet and greet. Doesn’t the $ disadvantage count less in those places?

As for Mayor Billionberg, I’m afraid his vanity will compel him to spoil the well. Think Donald Trump with money.

JiangxiDad on December 24, 2007 at 2:19 PM

$17 million? That was back in October- it’s likely up to $25 million of his own money by now.

This from the guy who wanted a 10% tax on campaign contributions to fund taxpayer campaign financing.

Hollowpoint on December 24, 2007 at 2:24 PM

Amazing to think that Johnny Mac is just short of being the favorite again. If Giuliani collapses (or continues to collapse), JM will get a lot of his support. Rudy already pre-endorsed him. He’d be able to rally most of the party as the electable anyone-but-Mitt-or-Huck candidate. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth among the McCain-haters here and elsewhere, but their decibelage has always been higher than their numbers.

The only thing that could upset that scenario would be a strong finish for Fred in IA (another reason for JMac’s return there ahead of the caucuses) or a premature implosion by Huck. But… but… and then… or…

It’s fascinating and a bit exhausting. One thing: I don’t see Mitt or Huck rallying from early failures (for Huck in IA, for Mitt in IA and NH) – if they can’t win now, when and where could anyone expect them to win?

I am so sick of this crap from Huckabee. If I wanted to play this game, I’d be a Democrat.

I can think of a compound word that says it all about this guy, and it’s kinda like ‘Suckabee’ except with a different letter in Front.

Right. It’s okay to have Godless liberal policies as long as you’re Christian.

I said it before and I’ll say it again – if the Evangelicals are too stupid to see through this guys bullsh*t then I don’t want them in the party to begin with.

Are Huck’s arms permanently stuck in this position? Seems in every picture there he is supplicating again! That must be something they teach in pastor school.

Huck to Iowans: Don’t let Romney buy the election

I find this ironic considering I’ve seen just as many, if not more, ads for the Huckster here in Iowa as I have for Romney.

The best I’ve heard on another thread is that the Huckster is really a Democrat with a bible and a gun.

Keep in mind that the MSM is selectively pulling these quotes. The person who said this is sort of a religious, conservative version of a DKos contributer. Both sides have them, just their side has more (and the MSM will not quote them.)

Nosferightu on December 24, 2007 at 4:47 PM

I have a different exit question banging me in the head. Where do knuckleheads like Gary Thies of Mapleton come from? The Most Important Thing in his life is hearing “Merry Christmas”?! Dear Lord, slap some sense into that jerk.

Jaibones on December 24, 2007 at 5:30 PM

Didn’t Rockefeller try to buy people’s votes?

How did that work out for him?

You can’t BUY people’s votes, they either will or won’t vote for you based on substance, message, etc. I suppose the exception would be Democrats, since their entire message is about what government is going to hand out to people. Especially Hillary’s 5K for pushing out a baby.

Once again Huckster is on the class warfare trip…

I’ve finally figured it out, EricPWJohnson is Mike Huckabee!

BKennedy on December 25, 2007 at 5:50 AM

Huckabee has incredible chutzpah to complain about Romney “buying” Iowa. Huckabee allowed himself to be bought by every lobbyist in Arkansas. He accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in “gifts” from well connected people in Arkansas who thought it would be a good idea to know the governor pretty well. He accepted over $60,000.00 in speaking fees from RJ Reynolds (and then said he didn’t know where the money came from. He just took it without asking). Huckabee was so unashamed of being bought he even put up a web site registry telling people what to buy him and where to get it (and if it happened to be Dillards, all the better).
And with all the barely under the surface antiMormon whispering from the Huckabee camp, there is no evidence anywhere that Mitt Romney ever tried to convert people to become Mormons. From everything known about Romney, he has always had the philosophy that people could believe anything they want to.

Larraby on December 25, 2007 at 3:01 PM

Larraby on December 25, 2007 at 3:01 PM

So that time he spent in France as a missionary for the Mormon Church was a vacation after all? He did go there to get out of the Vietnam war?
Or did he go there as a missionary, to convert people to the Mormon Church?
Looks like that very known fact slipped your mind there for a moment…there I readjusted your thinking cap, now you can think a little more clearly.
Oh yeah, that little fact of letting Bechtel off from any serious fine for creating one of the biggest boondoggles in the states history (Boston’s big dig), and Bechtel being a long time supporter of Mitt was just a coincidence… we are talking 100’s of millions of dollars, not thousands.
No penny ante stuff for Mitt, he goes for the big bucks, you talk about thousands, he talks about millions in payoffs.
*
Now you were saying about Mitt never converting anyone, and Huck taking some money?…

Were you not incapable of rational thought vis-a-vis Romney, you’d know Larraby was talking about using gubernatorial influence to convert people to Mormonism.

That you would reference Romney’s religious mission in France simply proves there is no depths to which you will not sink.

Do you ever get tired of being this intellectually dishonest or do you just sort of grow into it?
