Video: Fred’s holiday message

Classy. They could have gone the Huckabee route here and turned it into a political opportunity by having Fred appear in it. The fact that they didn’t speaks well of him.

Note too: It’s a holiday message, not merely a Christmas one. Given the subject matter, that’s also appropriate.

Merry Christmas, troops.

Good on you, Fred.

Very classy.

More good genuine greetings. They always help make the season a little better.

Thank you.

Something we can all agree on.

Merry Christmas.

Professor Blather on December 22, 2007 at 2:20 PM

Nicely done. Good. Very classy. Genuine. All very true.

Also smart. Everyone else pumps out theirs and Fred waits to mail his just a couple of days later.

Something different this way comes. Slow and steady like.

Very nice and very Fred.

Connie on December 22, 2007 at 2:23 PM

Where was the VO: “I’m Fred Thompson, and I approved this message”?

Cool.

If Fred had spoken, Allah would have found it “irritating” rather than “awesome” ;^)

The lives we give true
A Christmas to you
Forget not you less

Very nicely done Fred! A touch of class.

Where are the trolls today? I’m sure they will have something nasty to say about this.

pedestrian on December 22, 2007 at 2:36 PM

The music was a nice subtle “Merry Christmas” message without having to make it clear that this was a Christmas ad. Another example that Fred! “gets it.”

Mallard T. Drake on December 22, 2007 at 2:38 PM

I’ll never get tired of looking at images of our military men and women. I’ll never get tired of the photos of little Iraqi kids having a good time. Ads like this make my heart swell with pride to be an American. And that’s a message I’ll never get tired of hearing.

Merry Christmas.

RushBaby on December 22, 2007 at 2:38 PM

Actually, my last post wasn’t quite clear. The Fred! gets it is in reference to the content of the ad. He understands what is important and appropriate at this time of year. Not having to listen to politicians hawking their programs.

Mallard T. Drake on December 22, 2007 at 2:40 PM

This was the accompanying letter, according a post at FR:

“email content:

December 22, 2007

Dear Friend:

In this season when we are thankful for the many blessings our freedom enables, we should also remember the hundreds of thousands of men and women, sons and daughters, and friends who are defending America’s security.

Their faithful devotion and defense to our founding principles protects us and is allowing freedom to spread in lands formerly ruled by tyranny.

The victory that they are winning against the threats of radical terrorists will be the clarion call that goes out to all the world’s tyrants, that America will fight for those oppressed and deliver God’s great gift of freedom.

As they go about their duties, we pray that they will be safe and comforted by all those here at home praying for them.

Senator Fred Thompson had this video produced to thank our troops for their courage and sacrifice, and to let them know they are not forgotten as they are away from their loved ones during the Christmas holiday.

We would ask that you take the time and forward this to any active duty military soldier, reservist and veteran in your e-mail address book and ask them to do the same. Please also forward this to all of your family, friends and associates and ask them to do the same.

We join Fred in wishing each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Sincerely yours,

Major General James Livingston Joe Repya USMC (Retired) LTC US Army (Retired) Medal of Honor Recipient National Executive Director Co-Chair, National Steering Committee Veterans for Fred Thompson Veterans for Fred Thompson”

Classy video

bnelson44 on December 22, 2007 at 2:43 PM

Nice clip. We can all agree, I’m sure, on the message, and it’s cool that he did it. From a crass political standpoint, I’m not sure how much it helps him with any voters not already in his camp. Then again, I’m not sure how much any of the “holiday” ads help any of the candidates, except maybe Huckabee, since his ad reinforced his Christian image. By the way, did Romney do a Christmas ad?

Big S on December 22, 2007 at 2:44 PM

Outstanding!

Excellent. Reminding America of it’s strength – the people sacrificing to preserve our rights, of whom we can all be proud and grateful. Thank you Fred. Thank you service families.

Exactly Limerick. Fred’s campaign strategy reminds me of the fable, The Tortoise and the Hare:
Quiet, steady, and thoughtful
versus
loud, frantic, and brash.

Every day my conviction grows stronger and stronger – I’m voting for Fred!

Keli on December 22, 2007 at 2:58 PM

It pains me to say it, but I think Mitt will “win” if he puts out a halfway decent Christmas ad. He’ll benefit enormously from looking like a mainstream Christian in a TV ad. It probably won’t be as inspiring a message as Fred’s, but it will quickly eclipse all of the others based solely on who it’s coming from. There’s a reason why he’s put it off until the last couple of days.

Big S, Mitt did do a Christmas ad(s), they were bunch of ads dissing Huck, which shows you how ineffective he/it was.
Fred has shown again why he is a leader and not a follower.

right2bright on December 22, 2007 at 3:25 PM

That’s a great ad, without the Fred Thompson at the end, you wouldn’t even know it was a political ad, and really, that would be a great ad just to run for Christmas. I dunno that it helps him in any way, but I don’t think that matters.

Fred delivers the goods, day in and day out. His positions are solid as granite which really explains why stories like this get spun out of control. The last thing that his opponents want is to have to stand toe to toe with Fred on the issues. Doing so would be the equivalent of Richard Simon’s trying to take the heavy weight boxing title from Mike Tyson when Mike was at the height of his career. To say that it would not be a pretty sight would be the understatement of the century to say the very least.

doriangrey on December 22, 2007 at 4:02 PM

After a second watch… this is an excellent example of why Fred is the only Republican that stands a chance of winning in the general. People will like him and respect him. You have to admit, even we don’t have anymore of those in the chase.

I think if Fred has to drop out early you’ll see many true conservatives resigned to a liberal landslide. The good news… only 10% of America actually know they’re conservative and when asked would call theirselves part of the conservative movement. 10% at best.

Best Christmas card I have ever received.

Solemn reminder about all who keep us free. Elegantly classy. Nothing hidden, and nothing obviously displayed; no alternative motives.

Merry Christmas mrfixit.

I honestly thought that the days when a political candidate would do something that wasn’t completely self serving were long gone. Very good vid. Thank you Fred for reminding me of exactly where my thoughts and prayers shoud be right now.

Griz on December 22, 2007 at 4:11 PM

If Fred drops out, it will be a repeat of the ‘04 election. Voting against someone, rather than voting for someone. I cannot in good conscience, this time, work for any candidate other than Fred Thompson and all of my energy will simply be put into defeating the left. That’s kind of a drag.

csdeven on December 22, 2007 at 11:50 PM

As much as he’s bashed in the media for not being as “articulate” as when he’s scripted, I think Fred’s really a classy guy, and speaks from his to the hearts of other Americans.

Wonderfully done; I’m glad he didn’t include anything other than his name… it seemed far more genuine than the other ads so far.

I haven’t endorsed any candidate as of yet, as I’m still not sure the extent of how much of what they say is true or simply contrived for my vote. But I will admit; Fred is growing on me.

Keli on December 22, 2007 at 2:58 PM

It WAS very good in that it showed that we who are here at home preparing to celebrate Christmas with family should be very thankful for many things. Top of the list should be that we have those who are willing to give up their Christmas with family to serve our country in a foreign land to keep us safe.

The ad also showed the Iraqi’s looking rather thankful for our soldiers being there…not usually portrayed by the DBM.

It was also great in that it showed what a priority our soldiers should be during this time, and what their mission is. It wasn’t about some smarmy crap about giveaways with some gift wrapping suggesting a holiday ad, or a Christmas tree in the background and a cheesy political message.

It wasn’t about some politicians family and how he might celebrate Christmas, but should remind those politicians who are the ones missing their family.

Very classy and well done.

When will the trolls start whining about the troops being politicized?

TBinSTL on December 23, 2007 at 3:16 AM

Well, you stay ignorant dopey.

Fred didn’t do this ad. His makeover people did. What Fred actually does on his own time is lobby for a dictator that murdered people by putting tires over their heads and lighting them on fire. He also gave legal advice to terrorists who blew up flight 103. He gave us McCain/Feingold and funneled campaign cash to his family. He lobbied against American citizens who were victims of asbestos poisoning. He lied about his involvement with an abortion group, and he lied about always being pro-life. For toppings, lets consider his behavior whoring it up around the beltway for years.

So spare the group your misguided claptrap. When Mitt is attacked for weeks about whether his dad did or did not walk with MLK, and Rudy is derided because of his divoces, what do you think will happen if Fred gets the nomination? Nobody cares right now because Fred has zero chance to win the nomination. But if he were to become viable at some point, the media will crucify his unprincipled and immoral a$$. And the American people will reject him in droves the minute his “personal” life is reported on.

Fred IS NOT a conservative. He is a scum bag lobbyist and lawyer and I am no more as likely to believe he personally cares about the troops as I would from the scum he has associated himself with for much of his life if they were to produce such a video.

csdeven on December 23, 2007 at 6:03 AM

This nations legacy will never be lost unless we let them take it away from U.S.

Classy ad, if you can call it that. I still love Fred, just don’t think he has what it takes to win. Too bad, cause I still believe that he is exactly the type we need sitting in the big chair.

And with all this goodwill toward men and a great salute to our fighting men and women csdeven still pulls out the scumbag card. cs, I love you man, Merry Christmas to you and yours and please pass on a Very Merry Christmas from all of us to your son. God bless him

conservnut on December 23, 2007 at 11:04 AM

There really are two Americas, and when I watch something like this, I feel a great swell of pity and contempt for the one Harry Reid lives in. What do the morons over at Daily Kos do to celebrate Christmas? Pass around the latest troop fatality statistics and comfort each other with assurances that American defeat is right around the corner?

I still have faith in Fred, and this Christmas message reinforces it quite a bit. I don’t know what his plan has been all this time, but I sure hope it works. I’d vote for any of the Republicans (obviously excepting Paul) over the unthinkable alternatives, but I really want to vote for the guy who made this his holiday message. I know the odds are looking bad right now… but that’s why it’s called “faith.”

Merry Christmas to everyone, and especially to the troops serving overseas. The greatest empires of ancient times would have counted themselves fortunate to have one such hero, and we have hundreds of thousands of them. Talk about a blessing…
