I’m sure that Rush does love Huck just as much as Huck loves him, what he does not love is the notion of the Huckster as POTUS.

Larry Kudlow was pretty rough on Huck in an interview he did with Hugh Hewitt the other day:

[W]hen I had Governor Huckabee on, what was it, last week or the week before, I had a bout with him. I went at it. He wants to, if need be, have government regulate salaries. I think he’s crazy. I don’t think he understands the free market business system. He’s not good on taxing, he’s not good on spending, he’s not good on free trade. In other words, all the prosperity factors seem to be Mr. Huckabee’s weakness. I don’t think he understands it. He’s just out of tune with all measures of free market, supply side economics. You know, it isn’t his religion, and I admire his religion. I personally am a man of faith. I regard myself as an Evangelical, the fact is. But it’s not his religion, it’s his positions. Condi Rice came out of the State Department. Hell, I haven’t seen her in about a month or two. She came out and attacked him because of his navet on dealing in international affairs with Iran and others. He doesn’t seem to understand power politics, and that we are in a jihadist global war.

Is this the cherry on top? News coming out about shady fundraising.

Most noteworthy, $35,000 came from Novo Nordisk, one of the world’s largest embryonic stem cell researchers. It seems that when money is at stake Huckabee may be able to look past his supposedly fervent opposition to this procedure

Too bad Rush is on vacation this week…

krabbas on December 22, 2007 at 11:42 PM

I found this the other week on Huckabee and Novo Nordisk. This may be the story.

I didn’t know until a California reporter mentioned it to me today that Novo Nordisk had distributed 35,000 copies of a Spanish translation of Mike Huckabee’s weight loss book. The news release doesn’t mention if he gave up royalties on this public service. Huckabee has, however, reported a $17,500 honoraria from Novo Nordisk. Novo Nordisk, among others, sells products to diabetics and Huckabee said dealing with the onset of that disease inspired his weight loss.

The embedded links in the quote are from the Arkansas Blog. The first link to the Hispanic PR Wire announcing the book and the second is to Salon, which states:

Mike Huckabee’s speaking fees

The former Arkansas governor made nearly $140,000 from speaking honorariums in 2006 and 2007, including $35,000 from a diabetes healthcare company.

Editor’s note: The following pages are taken from Mike Huckabee’s Public Financial Disclosure Report, as filed May 15, 2007. The largest honorariums come from Novo Nordisk, a company that supplies healthcare products to treat diabetes. Huckabee is famous for losing more than 100 pounds after being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

I don’t have Salon premium to link to the pages. However, I assume the report is available somewhere.

INC on December 22, 2007 at 11:54 PM

I was on another Salon page and went back to the above. Here is the link to the document. I don’t know if it will work or if you will get a Salon ad.

katieanne on December 23, 2007 at 12:04 AM

INC on December 23, 2007 at 12:02 AM

Yes, the two 17,500 fees are there and they are dated 2007 not 2006 so it would have been after he as governor. As I suspected, this was a non-story, story.

Huck has enough against him without making things up so thank you for the reference.

bnelson44 on December 23, 2007 at 12:05 AM

bnelson44, You’re welcome for the reference. However, I don’t think the point of the Stop the ACLU story was any financial problem with the money, but calling into question Huckabee’s record of objecting to embryonic stem cell research while taking money from Novo Nordisk.

but calling into question Huckabee’s record of objecting to embryonic stem cell research while taking money from Novo Nordisk.

INC on December 23, 2007 at 12:11 AM

Glen Reynolds has it up and the Boston Globe does as well. Apparently some Huck supporters were claiming that Novo Nordisk just did diabetes research, but that is challenged by folks saying they are using embryonic stem cells for that research. Goes head on against his base.

bnelson44 on December 23, 2007 at 12:47 AM

When a child apologizes for taking a cookie, they aren’t apologizing because they stole, and deceived, they are apologizing because they were caught and are trying to appease the punisher.

Politicians are far from the innocense of a child taking a cookie. He got caught calling Rush out and Rush hit back. Now he’s asking for a truce, surrendering before Rush actually loads up and unloads on him. I am a firm believer in unconditional surrender. Rush needs to put him in his place, take no prisoners, no capitulation.

P. James Moriarty on December 23, 2007 at 1:26 AM

I think you can find a “Quote of the day” in this interview John Stossel did with the Paultard:

Ron Paul on War

the guy is either the most naive of human nature, ignorant of basic history OR is a lying scumbag with ulterior anti-american motives.

Stossel shouldn’t have stopped with WW2. SHould’ve asked:

Was Thomas Jefferson wrong to lobby for War with the Barbary Pirates and their City-State sponsors for more than 15 years before doing so as President, without a ‘declaration of war’? Was Jefferson wrong to say ‘they attack us’, because of it being in the “laws of their prophet’.

jp on December 23, 2007 at 1:33 AM

Well, tonight on Fox, Ann Coulter endorsed the Huckaboom.

LOL! Right after she says “Mike Huckabee is the Republican Jimmy Carter” she endorses him.

Nice fantasy.

Here’s an even better one: A heavenly choir of all the Cherubim and Seraphim singing the praises of Huckabee, the Archangels chanting “Huck-a-bee, Huck-a-bee” while banging their swords in time against their breastplates, the curia of all the saints in heaven stomping their feet on the bleachers shouting “Huck-a-bee, Huck-a-bee”, and in the midst the tumult, God himself rises from his throne and glances down with affection at Mike Huckabee, whereupon all the people of America proclaim, with one unanimous and desperate voice “President Huckabee”! Yeah, that would be cool.

If Canada invades Montana?

I think that might be a little bit different. Montana probably could take care of it, but we’d probably help them out from Washington if that happened.

Beyond that, why would anyone try to piss off Rush?

And why am I awake…

sunny on December 23, 2007 at 2:12 AM

I expect that Hucks numbers will be headed to McCain, Hunter, and Thompson territory pretty soon.

Where are the real conservatives? Did RR take them with him? Did the Clinton/Bush years damage this country so badly that the only way to get elected is to try and be both liberal and conservative at the same time? Why, as is evident in the 2000 election, is this country so polarized? Aren’t there ANY issues left that cross party lines that we can get behind? Is it going to take a catastrophic event like the depression to get folks wanting the same things for this country?

The only consolation is that the liberals are having the same problem. They don’t think their liberals are liberal enough.

The only answer is that it is time for a new Reaganesque movement in this country. We are bored with the old Reagan, and the next politician who figures out how to speak to us all, WILL become the new Reagan.

HarryBalzac on December 23, 2007 at 8:44 AM

“I don’t have his number,” Huckabee explained. “If you have it, Jonathan, why don’t you give it to me. I’d love to talk to him.”

One of two explanations for this:

- The more-innocent one is he doesn’t have the “hotline” number (that is something that is well-guarded by radio shows)
- If he doesn’t have the main studio line (1-800-282-2882), he’s lying (again) about loving Rush.

csdeven on December 23, 2007 at 6:36 AM

Very good questions. The short answer is that 75 years of virtually-unchecked growth of government has successfully killed conservatism and put us on at best the slow boat to outright socialism. Just take a look at how the last couple of tax-rate cut battles were fought. The argument that ultimately won the day wasn’t, “Let’s cut taxes because government is taking and spending too much.” It was, “Let’s cut the rates because it won’t actually reduce how much government takes.”
