Hillary Clinton, the ultimate anti-feminist candidate?

Message: She’s nothing without her man.

After months of discussion within her campaign over how heavily she should draw on her husband’s legacy, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is closing out her Iowa and New Hampshire campaigns in a tight embrace of Bill Clinton’s record, helping fuel a debate about the 1990s with Sen. Barack Obama that she thinks she can win.

As part of the Clinton strategy, the former president is playing an increasingly prominent public role as an advocate for his wife. He appears to have overcome concerns within the campaign over how closely she should associate her candidacy with his time in office and over whether his appearances could draw attention away from her.

Both Clintons are making the case that theirs was a co-presidency — an echo of Bill Clinton’s controversial statement during the 1992 campaign that voters would get “two for the price of one” if they elected him. At times, the former president has seemed to cast the current race as a referendum on his administration.

Hillary’s problem is that she has tried just about everything else, from planting softball questions to trying to display an evidently non-existent human side to playing up her experience over Obama’s — experience that actually doesn’t amount to much of an advantage over his experience at all. Yet Obama just keeps gaining on her.

But doesn’t taking Bill’s legacy as if it’s her own render her as little more than a socket puppet or cut-out candidate that would put him into a shadow presidency? Doesn’t this make her the ultimate dependent? She literally can’t win the office without adopting her husband’s legacy as her own.

Among the many problems with the Clinton’s “restoration” approach is this: Clinton’s legacy bears a peculiar, er, stain.

At times, his pitch for his wife is focused so much on his own accomplishments as president that it almost sounds as if he himself is running for reelection. In a two-hour interview Thursday with the Concord Monitor, he referred to his having made a “terrible mistake” while president, an apparent reference to the Monica S. Lewinsky scandal, and then added: “The voters will have to make their own judgments about that. I’ve done everything I could, first of all, to try to be a good president and, secondly, to try to be a good after-president.”

The many Clintonistas who went to jail are also a part of their legacy. They’re putting all of that and more back on the table.

There is no way these two should get back in the White House. A Clinton Mulligan is not in the cards. Having Bubba as part of her campaign was stroke of stupidity. It looks like he has to keep stepping in to defend her since she can’t take it when people question her. It also shows what a dysfunctional person she is to still be letting Bubba (even if it’s an act) be in the inner circle of any important decisions.

remember the poll a few weeks ago that said that 1/2 of hillary’s supporters are there for bill.

you’d think intellectually honest feminists would be out there saying that she shouldn’t be relying on the association with her husband to be elected; but there is only silence.

that she dropped the rodham from her name for the campaign says a lot too, doesnt it?

lorien1973 on December 22, 2007 at 11:41 AM

The male Clinton is always running for something, alaways campaigning. It’s always about him. And that’s what the democ-rats want – Willy back in the White House!

Bill Clinton clearly suffers from a form of narcissism that psychiatrists would probably worry about if he were a patient. His utter selfabsorption and unwillingness to express interest in any subject except himself is downright scary. His Freudian slip up about how the voters in 2008 will judge his conduct with Monica is really indicative of a man who is not well. He truly views the 2008 election as a referendum on Bill Clinton. He refuses to even consider the possibility that people have moved on from him and don’t dwell on Bill Clinton 24/7. He demands attention every minute of every day. He will even deny his own wife (or formal wife to be more accurate) her moment in the sunlight. Her campaign must be about him. One of the most truly creepy memories I have of Clinton is when he sat with former President Bush at the Superbowl a few years ago. The network guy interviewed them both and asked each man who he thought would win. Bush said New England-17, Philadelphia 10. Clinton then said: “Well I don’t like to take sides becasue when I ran for election I won in both Boston and Philadelphia….”. He said that right in front of his former opponent and didn’t care if he insulted Bush. Even worse, Clinton’s narcissism is so severe that he could not even discuss a football prediction without turning the subject to himself. And even worse, he thought people cared about Bill Clinton. I always have wondered if anyone else watching that interview felt that Clinton was as creepy as I did. And how on earth does such a selfabsorbed man have any real friends?

Larraby on December 22, 2007 at 11:49 AM

The only thing good about the current Clinton campaign is all that Chinese money and liberal money and Saudi money being pumped back into our economy.

Feminists like Gloria Steinem must be absolutely thrilled with how Hillary handled the whole Bill/Monica back in the 1990’s by “standing by her man” and how Hillary can’t seem to blow her nose (licenses for illegals, etc.) without Bill being there to wipe it for her during this campaign…;-)

The hypocrisy is so thick, you could choke on it.

It should be illegal.
Why don’t we run for 16 years next time…include the spouse and keep going. Include kids and you could see a 32 year presidency in the not too distant future just to keep one person in the oval office.
.
Hell, run the dog, kinda like what hillary is really, a well trained mutt.

I’m already suffering from Klinton fatigue.

What’s next? Will she promise to build her presidential library in New Orleans?

Zorro on December 22, 2007 at 11:57 AM

“He appears to have overcome concerns within the campaign over how closely she should associate her candidacy with his time in office and over whether his appearances could draw attention away from her.”

At this point, anything that can draw attention away from Hillary can only benefit them. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Clinton campaign starts bringing out someone in a chicken suit at her appearances, or possibly a clown. I mean, a different clown. Not Bill.

Hillary being an anti-feminist candidate is ironic on a lot of levels, but has there ever been anything she’s achieved that wasn’t because of who she was married to? I consider Bill Clinton to be responsible for the death of feminism anyway. It’s not scientific, just a gut feeling, but I don’t think feminists have really been a factor in American politics ever since they completely and hypocritically prostituted themselves to defend Bill Clinton and his cornucopia of sexual misconduct. After shouting to the rooftops during the Clarence Thomas hearings that no woman would ever lie about sexual harassment, it was sickening to watch the NOW gang savage Bill’s numerous accusers, including Democrats like Kathleen Willey.

Among the many problems with the Clinton’s “restoration” approach is this: Clinton’s legacy bears a peculiar, er, stain.

Bryan, you are a very bad person for writing that. Bravo.

Anyone wanna bet, if she loses in 2008, she’ll be divorced by the end of 2009?

petefrt on December 22, 2007 at 11:59 AM

I don’t think the Left wants Clinton anymore. They are all about image, and Obama’s got it – since they don’t care about issues or truth.

Obama will neutralize a broad range of attacks and criticism, and they know it.

“Mr Obama did you know that the Democrat Party created the Klu Klux Klan?” “Mr Obama, did you know that the Republicans passed the civil rights bill, twice?” “Mr Obama did you know that Martin Luther King, his father, and now his children are a Republicans?”

“Mr Obama, if you were interested in a change, you would realize you are on the wrong side”.

Larraby on December 22, 2007 at 11:49 AM

Clinton has NO REAL FRIENDS, only “bought” friends with either money or promises of money or power. But don’t get too close….
CLINTONBODYCOUNT IS VERY REAL.
Look at it. There are just way, WAY too many to explain away.

I’ve said it so many times in the past 15+ years, but it bears repeating: Hillary is no woman or feminist…she is a female of the type that eat their young. She is what we knew as a queen bee in my generation…we still used carbon paper. Power and its absolute control are her only goals and if she could somehow make Bubba disappear for a year, she would. But, like the typical FEMALE she’ll keep on hanging on. She reminds me of the New Orleans activist who has been on the dole her entire life and living with a 60″ flat t.v. complaining that the “give aways” she gets are not very goog!

lorien1973 on December 22, 2007 at 11:41 AM

Well, that statement presupposes the existence of intellectually honest feminists, which are about as easy to find as unicorns. But you knew that.

ReubenJCogburn on December 22, 2007 at 12:07 PM

As an anti-feminist voter, I can tell you that feminist Hillary has been working to destroy the fabric of our society since she drew breath. Bill Clinton’s narcissism is the reason for his involvement. His ego makes it completely impossible for him to stay uninvolved. There have been photographs taken recently that show him looking at his wife with an expression that resembles unbridled hatred, as if he sees her blowing his chance to be Mr. “I’m an NGO” President of the World. Of course, I’ve seen her look at him the same way.

ReubenJCogburn on December 22, 2007 at 12:07 PM

That’s more or less my point :P

Feminism has really shown its true face in the past 5-6 years.

lorien1973 on December 22, 2007 at 12:12 PM

At the convention, two minutes after Obama is nominated, Bill is served with divorce papers.

Limping away, holding his crotch, Bill dials a phone#…hey baby, whatchya up to.

Speakup on December 22, 2007 at 12:33 PM

I still say don’t count her out. This race is just getting started.

Limerick on December 22, 2007 at 1:06 PM

At this point there is no way Hillary can win the Democratic primary without Bill being out front. Bill remains a figure of even greater heroic proportions among African American Democrats than Reagan is for Republicans.

If she divorced Bill from her campaign, Obamma and even Edwards would have far greater appeal to that most important (and completely used and abused) core constituency in the Democratic Party.

Edwards knows this, which is why I think he has returned his campaign to focusing on poverty and the “underclass.”

Obamma’s appeal remains the most dangerous for Hill. His ethnicity is a given, and he has been careful to maintain his image as a middle or upper-middle class citizen. His politics obviously are scary left-wing nutty, but he seems like a “nice” guy. And that is a key to winning over genuine, fence-sitting voters.

doufree on December 22, 2007 at 1:11 PM

I’ve always thought that Hillary was the anti-feminist. She would not be senator without who she was married to. She would not be a presidential candidate if it wasn’t for who she was married to.

It is a classic the woman is only as good as the man she marries case. If she had divorced him, she wouldn’t be viable, she wouldn’t be a senator. The only reason she stayed with him was because he was her greatest accomplishment as a woman. Without him, she would just be another Cindy Sheehan liberal.

Larraby on December 22, 2007 at 11:49 AM

I don’t think he does. Anyone who treated his wife–and child for that matter–in the shabby way he did can’t be any more loyal to anyone else. Narcissist is right. The man doesn’t give a damn for anyone but himself.

Anyone else around here think Clinton really and consciously wants Hillary to lose, just so he won’t be personally upstaged, he’s just trying not to be too obvious about it?

inviolet on December 22, 2007 at 1:35 PM

As long as she is running her campaign Bill is on a tight leash. The second she loses he will start back with his whoring around. This man is by far the most slimey piece of sh!t I have ever seen in my life.

Good one Bryan – I like it !!

Merry Christmas to all the hard workers who make this web site possible!

OBX Pete on December 22, 2007 at 2:43 PM

I think Hillary will be divorced either way. Win or lose. We all know Billy won’t be able to help himself and the vast rite-bbqed-wing conspiracy will be gunning for him so she’ll be forced to throw him out either way to save face after they clean the stains that is. She’ll be the first president in history to go thru a divorce while serving in the WH. Man she’ll be crabby after that, eh?

Griz on December 22, 2007 at 2:52 PM

If there are two more insincere people on this earth, I don’t know.

But I’m prolly stating the obvious.

Hey, this is too rich for anyone to miss:

Hillary is ‘polarizing’ only because of what rivals say, Bill Clinton says

Is that classic Clinton, or what.

“After-president”? Is that anything like an afterbirth?
