Video: Bro tased at the New Orleans city council meeting Updated

It’s nigh unto impossible to see the bro actually being tased, unfortunately, but a bro does stake a claim to having been tased.

The audio weirdness late in the clip seems to be a technical glitch in the station.

Here’s the back story on the fracas.

A city council meeting where the fate of several New Orleans housing developments was to be decided was delayed several times due to shouting matches and skirmishes that broke out inside of the chamber. The meeting began about an hour late with a long reading of rules to the public about how the council meeting was to proceed.

Security had to physically restrain several protesters and housing demonstrators complained that several people trying to get in the meeting were prevented from doing so.

Police used chemical spray and stun devices as dozens of protesters tried to force their way through an iron gate at City Hall.

Some people were arrested as officers tried to establish order and an ambulance arrived on the scene. It was unclear whether there were injuries or the ambulance was a precautionary measure.

According to the video, those who were ejected from the meeting weren’t residents themselves, but advocates for the residents. Probably of the self-appointed variety, acting on John Edwards’ call to be a voice for people who are otherwise right there and perfectly able to speak for themselves if they so choose. And the advocates may be representing an attitude that’s not helpful in still unreconstructed New Orleans. Or among its scattered former residents.

Nice TV. Mine’s about half that size.

Update: Laura at Pursuing Holiness has much, much more information and perspective on this. Here’s a money quote, but be sure and read the whole thing.

Those people are not going to support themselves until there is absolutely no other option, and possibly not even then. Part of the current political flap is the so called “right to return” for New Orleans “refugees.” The right to come back and be supported by taxpayers? There are jobs going to spare here. We’ve absorbed tens of thousands of illegal aliens and we still don’t have enough workers. People can return anytime they please, if they’re willing to pay their own way.

Barack Obama and John Edwards are on record as wanting to keep the moldy, lead-painted, asbestos-filled, high-crime slums that these protestors are fighting to keep open. Who’s really doing more to help poor people?

Same here. Oh, to live on the public dole; I could tell stories about some neighbors we used to have in their “income assistance” condo. The ones with the brand new F-150 (Harley-Davidson Edition), Harley-Davidson motorcycle (not a Ford edition, though), skidoo, and cabin in the woods.

According to John McPhee the Mississippi is headed down the Atchafalaya soon anyway. Problem solved, the city settles to the bottom of the gulf.

I remember, just after Katrina, a morbidly obese woman was screeching into the camera, “It’s just not enough! It’s just not enough!” Made me regret the money I sent down to help there.

I work F/T and go to school at night, paying every penny of tuition on my own. I get about 5 hours of sleep a night, and I’m supposed to feel sorry for people living off my taxes who choose not to work, not to go to school, and who have tv’s 3 x as big as mine? (which I don’t watch, anyway, except to catch up on the news, because I’m too busy working/studying/taking care of my family, so I don’t really care…) but it’s the outrageousness of the victim mentality. “I don’t like living poor….” BOOOO HOOOO HOOOO makes me sick.

JustTruth101 on December 20, 2007 at 5:16 PM

How much would France charge us to take New Orleans back? Might be worth the price.

I’d like to see her take that big ol TV and plug it into a tent.

I dont blame the people of New Orleans for this fiasco. I blame the democratic party that has created a sub culture of poverty that convinces people that all they have to do is sit around and the government will take care of them.

They have destroyed the lives of these people by sucking out the will to find something better than a government handout

The use of pepper spray to beat back crowds trying to crash through a gate and disrupt a meeting is “police brutality”?

This a great point. In fact, they have become victims in the TRUE sense of the word. They are conditioned away from working for themselves and towards dependency. Sad

brought to you again by the revolutionary communist party and the international socialist organization.

they’ve been making a beachead at new orleans for a while now, complete with a travelling shantytown occuppied by uppper-middleclass white baby-boomers who play the role of the politically sensitive and articulate peasant (as communists often do) for credulous newscameras.

http://neworleans.indymedia.org/news/2007/12/11603.php

note how the skinhead identified his status with the city as “student”. one reason radical progressives like to identify themselves as “students” (i.e.: “…an authentic resistence movement of workers, students and indigenous peoples…” [of which the actual composition is two workers, one non-white professor and 500 white, rich "students".]) is because it allows them to fudge things. for instance, as a euphamism for “enlightened bourgoisie”, or “rich white kid with an electra/oedipus complex” or “juvenile delinquent who crushes and snorts his ritalin”. here it serves as a snappy answer to the question of what defensible basis some dude from madisaon wisconson has in instigating a mob physical confrontation at the city hall building in new orleans.

jummy on December 20, 2007 at 5:59 PM

Absolutely correct! Entitlement mentality conditions these people to be victims for generations. There’s no incentive to better themselves.
The Democrats know them as victim votes.

Kini on December 20, 2007 at 5:59 PM

Has anyone heard much about the poor people in Oklahoma and Kansas who are without lights going on 2 weeks? I guess they have the wrong skin color for the media to care. I doubt you will see many Okies, regardless of race, whining too much, though. It’s just the way most Americans do things…they do it themselves.

SouthernGent on December 20, 2007 at 6:05 PM

the clip of the skinhead’s post-rage elucidation on his rightious right to physically storm and upend a city council meeting of a city in which he does not live, btw, got picked up by cnn. it’s what they’re playing.

it works. sort of like blowing up a market, murdering a dozen people, and following up by releasing yoru videotaped manifesto to the press.

jummy on December 20, 2007 at 6:07 PM

“student” is a euphamism for “person with no authentic connection to the issue for which he is agitating, and insinuates himself soley for ideological interest, often to instigate or manufacture an ‘issue’ within a community in which he is an alien and to which he has no general or long-term committment.”

jummy on December 20, 2007 at 6:13 PM

17″ tube at my house, and no flat screen action either.

I gotta quote it again:

“I might be poor but I don’t like to live poor. I thank God for a place to live but it’s pitiful what people give you.”

I’ve become convinced that we need to let suffering happen. Let people really hit rock bottom, really get hungry, whatever. The resources are here, and the opportunities abound, but I think the only thing that will wipe that entitlement smirk off people’s face is the jolt of a week without food. Get hungry, sell that damn tv for food and start living life.

Yup TexasDan, I gotta repost that same quote. That is simply amazing. The entitlement mentality truly as become disgusting. Think about that dynamic, let it sink in and then recall the Hillary Clinton “Christmas” ad posted on this site earlier today. Its the perfect storm and its scary as hell. That picture shows what her lazy butt does all day. Sits on that very couch, eating, watching that TV, and complaining about a leaky faucet.

Being poor is having no food, water, or shelter. Even then, NO ONE owes you anything. That’s what (voluntary) charity is for.

Reminds me of some lyrics from a Matthew Good song (Lefty Alert!). Something along the lines of:

“Lots of third world people would love to have my first world problems”

Frozen Tex on December 20, 2007 at 6:50 PM

Sorry, I was a little bit off…

“Omissions of the Omen” by Matthew Good Band:

Wait for me if I don’t show up
Take from me this hypocrits cup
And someone to run the world
Someone would love to have my first world problems
Kill the moon and turn out the sun
Lock your door and load your gun
Free at last now the time has come to choose

Frozen Tex on December 20, 2007 at 6:56 PM

do you guys realize the way this works?

a rich white person who is defined by their leftism creates a violent situation at a city council meeting. they say they are speaking as the voice of public housing residents.

conservatives: they take their word for it and offer up harsh words for public housing residents.

a rich white person who is defined by their leftism seeks out a public housing resident to use as a prop in their narrative in suppport of expanding government, using the public housing resident as a human sheild.

conservatives: attack the public housing resident.

a rich white person who is defined by their leftism want to eliminate the the u.s. border, comprimise her market and cripple the neo-liberal colosus in her cradle. so the rich white person who is defined by their leftism organizes illegal mexican aliens into million-strong marches.

conservatives: are somehow blind to the 3 white college leftists per mexican at any of these rallies and instead direct their rancor at mexicans.

and over and over and over again.

Hillary Clinton visits Sharon Jasper Christmas morning at her apartment in front of the big screen TV. The conversation goes something like this:

“You like those presents, well you just wait. Oooooo what have we here… why its free healthcare. Do you like that Sharon Jasper? Well we’re not done yet. No sirreeee Miss Jasper. Ooooo look at this… why its free college tuition. You like that Miss Jasper don’t you. What’s that Miss Jasper? Oh, you say there is another present under the tree. Why yes there is. And this one is extra special! This one is free pre-school for your fatherless children. Yippeee! So Mrs Jasper, I bet you have friends that broke into our country illegally don’t you. Well why don’t we just dish out some free college tuition for them too? Why not? Mike Huckabee thinks that the Christian thing to do as well. Yes, you like Mr Huckabee don’t you Miss Jasper. Once we get the free tuition thing done we can work on that Amnesty thing and turn them into nice lemming socialist Democrat voters. Yippee.”

One of the few positive outcomes of flooding in New Orleans 2005 is the eventual destruction of drug and violence infested cubicles known as “projects.” Many have suggested single family dwellings for the working poor and these units have been successful. The knuckleheads protesting the destruction of the “projects” are standing in the way of bringing New Orleans into the 20th 21st century. Please “tase them bro.”

saved on December 20, 2007 at 8:38 PM

To the protesters: Boo Freakin Hoo. I’m suprised nobody has already said that. Any way to the lady in the picture. Ya it is a shame what some people will give you. Why do you take it? I have to work to feed my family and the money for those things that were “given” to you came out of my paycheck. Too bad she won’t see this site.

boomer on December 20, 2007 at 8:54 PM

Well you know what Neil Young said right, Welfare mothers make better lovers. It’s because of all the free stuff we give them. Oh, What the eff, I have never seen a city hall with an iron gate on it in my life. What a bunch of scumbags!

deadbackpacker on December 20, 2007 at 9:05 PM

I saw Sharon Jasper addressing the City Council today about her “rights.” I couldn’t get the capture set up in time, unfortunately, because it was quite remarkable. All I could think of was that this woman, who has spent the last 57 years on the dole to one extent or another - in public housing if nothing else - was protesting just a few blocks down the street from where my mother works. My mother is 62, and after her divorce, raised two kids without benefit of any public assistance and very little child support. She rents too - but she pays for it all on her own. It’s infuriating.

Laura on December 20, 2007 at 10:18 PM

Get a load of this: Demolition protests ignore some realities

And while the rhetoric has planted a perception that the scheduled demolition of the aging complexes is a result of Katrina, in reality it stems from a national policy shift launched well before the flood. Demolition of public housing in New Orleans has been going on for years as federal officials have sought to improve housing for the poor.

Indeed, federal lawsuits filed in New Orleans before Katrina objected not to demolitions, but to the living conditions in the city’s aging public housing developments, many of which were built in the 1930s and 1940s and were derided for warehousing the poor in dilapidated, inaccessible buildings.

Laura on December 20, 2007 at 10:48 PM

The use of pepper spray to beat back crowds trying to crash through a gate and disrupt a meeting is “police brutality”?

amerpundit on December 20, 2007 at 5:27 PM

I believe the prevailing opinion here at Hot Air is that the officers should address crowd as if they were speaking to small children, fully informing the mob of its rights, including the right to file a 42 USC §1983 civil suit, followed by a scholarly exegesis on the Miranda ruling.

If that doesn’t work, the officers are thought obligated to lie prone, single file, so as to form a human walkway over which the masses may pass without the unnecessary scuffing of any Manolos.

Does that about sum it up?
