Video: ABC’s Chris Cuomo plays the race card with Barack Obama

Big thanks to Extreme Mortman for catching this. Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama appeared on Good Morning America today. Most of the interview consisted of standard boilerplate political fare, but GMA host Chris Cuomo asked Obama one question that says more about Cuomo’s beliefs than anything else. He asked Obama what is the greater obstacle for him in the presidential contest, Hillary’s political machine or “America’s inherent racism.” Nice. To his credit, Obama doesn’t pick up the card and play it himself.
Cuomo is the youngest son of former NY Gov. Mario Cuomo. Did his father teach him about America’s “inherent racism” or is that attitude just part of the liberal Democrat DNA?
Update (AP): Needless to say, consider this a preview of the media’s narrative if the Messiah fails to win it all. And also needless to say, that narrative will be much more prevalent if he loses in the general, to a Republican, than in the primary.

Inherent racism?
So, if I don’t want to vote for him, it’s not because I disagree with his policies? I am inherently racist.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Smooth as glass. Not picking up that card scored points.
Limerick on December 20, 2007 at 9:45 AM
Obama’s good. If he’s not the Dem candidate this time, he will be sometime in the future I think. And he’ll be harder to beat with some more experience and age under his belt.
aero on December 20, 2007 at 9:54 AM
The only thing inherent is the left’s diarrhea of the mouth. Whether it’s “the worst economy in years,” “Republicans starve children and the elderly,” or “women and minorities hit hardest,” lefty media types will continue to use tactics to divide us and not unite us.
reppac122 on December 20, 2007 at 9:58 AM
OMG. How can I complain to ABC about that? I think Cuomo jr. needs to apologize for that.
BJ* on December 20, 2007 at 9:59 AM
Yeah….America’s inherent racism….where Obama can grow up, go to school, be elected Senator, and run for President.
I’m ashamed we held him back.
Limerick on December 20, 2007 at 10:01 AM
Is Mario Cuomo perhaps a racist?
ctmom on December 20, 2007 at 10:01 AM
Yep, definitely points for Obama.
Chris Cuomo is hosting GMA nowadays? Bwahahahahaaaa!
petefrt on December 20, 2007 at 10:02 AM
Maybe the biggest obstacle is the inherit stupidity of the press.
We all know how much Oprah is hated by all of those “white” women.
Speaking of that…does anyone see at times a little Cleavon Little in Obama? “Where’s the white women?”…they’re watching Oprah.
right2bright on December 20, 2007 at 10:06 AM
That tool from Newsweek, Jon Meacham, tried the same thing on Imus some months ago (before he was bounced) essentially saying that if you don’t support Obama you must be a racist. This is truly where the MSM shines.
sweeper on December 20, 2007 at 10:11 AM
Same way you were a racist, bigot, and xenophobe if you were opposed to shamnesty. Same song, different key.
a capella on December 20, 2007 at 10:11 AM
I don’t think he scored any points, just avoided a big slip up. He didn’t disagree with cuomo that America was inherently racist only that it wasn’t that big of an obstacle. cuomo, for his part, is a member of the self annointed ruling elite in this country and his making that kind of statement should be expected. People like him and the kennedy’s and celebrities like the foul women of the view are the equivalent of the members of the poliboro who used to drive past the long lines waiting to buy toilet paper and marvel at the equality.
peacenprosperity on December 20, 2007 at 10:14 AM
The scary thing about Obama is that he’s just as socialist as Hillary Clinton but it is impossible to hate the man. Obama may be a neophyte, but people actually want to vote for him and he won’t draw out nearly so many nose-holding Republicans.
Lets face it, Obama has a lot of problems. Being likable isn’t one of them.
BKennedy on December 20, 2007 at 10:16 AM
Another Liberal that hates his country. This time for being inherently racist. I guess the fact that no other country in the history of the planet has sacrificed more to combat racism, including the number of lives. Blacks live at a better standard in the USA than any other nation. I guess the fact that Liberals take out Black Americans such as Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice as “Uncle Toms” and traitors makes their exceptional achievements out of the mix, but there are plenty of other examples that squash that racist comment. Of course, this hack is of the party that wishes to keep a certain group of Americans in their pocket, and needs to keep announcing that racism is alive and well.
Hening on December 20, 2007 at 10:17 AM
He’ll be president some day. If not in 2008, then 2012. This is just good practice.
a capella on December 20, 2007 at 10:23 AM
Yeah, that was funny. If this keeps up, Cuomo will have to secretly do something racist himself– for the good of the country, of course.

Exactly. I’d put him in first place among the Dembots in terms of honesty and sincerity…it’s too bad he’s just plain wrong on just about every issue.
flipflop on December 20, 2007 at 10:25 AM
Well, you’ve got to admit that Cuomo is right. Look what happened to the last black man who had the audacity to run for President. Now the man has the long knives out for Al Sharpton just because he has a few missing dollars from his campaign. The IRS is just a tool of the inherently racist Amerika.
pistolero on December 20, 2007 at 10:27 AM
then why say it?
samuelrylander on December 20, 2007 at 10:31 AM
Don’t forget the sickening racism inherent in the ordeals Barry Bonds and Michael Vick have had to face. We all knew it was racist, yet stood by and did nothing.
a capella on December 20, 2007 at 10:34 AM
His father, IMO, is one of the most acidic, divisive, egotistical jerks ever to disgrace American politics.
His son is an empty suit who is *not* cut out for TV…if the term “deer in the headlights” hadn’t been coined already, they’d have invented it for Chris Cuomo.
Malpaso on December 20, 2007 at 10:38 AM
Every day I have to remind myself Obama is a left-wing socialist nutter with an idiotic foreign policy platform in order to avoid thinking he wouldn’t make a bad president. He comes across as honest, sincere, forthright, and not willing to jump on every hate America screed that comes his way. That’s what makes him scary. It isn’t like Edwards who is a two-faced surrendercrat ninny or Hillary Clinton who is a loathesome, corrupt, lying fraud. Obama is literally too new and too honest to find a reason to hate him. He is the only Dem candidate that I think I could genuinely enjoy having over for dinner.

Chris Cuomo is the perfect example of the American media’s inherent ignorance.
Griz on December 20, 2007 at 11:47 AM
The MSM is really shameless when it comes to having liberals who are the unaccomplished children of Democratic politicians host news programs. Chris Cuomo would be outside a fire station in Eureka, California reporting for a small AM radio station if his dad was not governor of New York and a Democrat. Yet young Cuomo insists that he is an impartial reporter. Then there was Maria Shriver who used to do hit pieces on Republican governors and welfare reform for NBC or ABC. (I am a huge fan of Big Arnie, nonethless).
Then there is George Stephanopolous, who is for all practical purposes the child of Bill and Hillary. Dan Rather as CBS News anchor attended a Democratic Party fundraiser in Texas and said he didn’t know there was any money raising going on. He thought it was a just a Texas barbecue. Katie Couric is from a prominent Democratic party family in Virginia. No bias there either. Ted Koppel’s daugher goes right from the Dukakis for president campaign to CNN correspondent. No bias or nepotism there either.

Folks, they are absolutely correct: they are racists at the core of their souls: they hate the white race!
sharinlite on December 20, 2007 at 12:04 PM
For those of you who aren’t getting the memo, the backup notification system is still available. Namely, if O’Reilly misspells MKH’s middle name, it’s Hispanics – otherwise it’s business as usual.
tlynch001 on December 20, 2007 at 12:09 PM
What the media won’t pick up on is if Obama loses the primary. They won’t blame race on those voters. Won’t even be considered a factor. But in the general election, then not only are Republicans racist unless Obama wins with a clear and uncontestible majority, they’ll make the same claim regarding gender if Hillary is the nominee and loses.

Thank God for inherent racism
MarkB on December 20, 2007 at 12:34 PM
I am also a white middle-aged male. I know it will come as a shock to my Asian wife and blended children as well as my nephew who is half-black and my niece’s husband who is half-Mexican that I too am an inherent racist. Its also rather strange that we’re all conservative in my family and with so many races represented. Hey maybe the minority members of my family are inherent racists too! Uh, imagine that. Cuomo is an idiot. Unfortunately he is the one with the microphone.
uchoosier on December 20, 2007 at 12:34 PM
Its funny, this question is a snapshot view into the liberal mind. AND it is why Obama will not win the Dem nomination. I hear very few people actually verbalizing this theory but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Liberals, who vote in Dem primaries will not make a black man their nominee. It is a cornerstone of liberal ideology that they believe this nation to be an “inherently racist” nation. As a result of this belief they will conclude that Barak Obama is unelectable. They won’t conclude this because they are racist, they will conclude this because they sincerely believe that everybody else in the country is a racist.
Zetterson on December 20, 2007 at 12:46 PM
It’s hard to educate people about the problems with Obama. I was talking to a woman in her mid-twenties. She is center right in her beliefs. She respects George W and his efforts to bring democracy to Iraq, but definitely social liberal. Yet, she thinks Obama is the best politician ever. I pointed out that he wants surrender in Iraq. She thinks that whoever is president next will have to continue Bush’s policy in Iraq, and thus won’t hold Obama’s surrender rhetoric against him. We need to figure how to reach people like her before November 2008. Basically, we have to convince them when the Democrats say surrender, they really, truly mean surrender. (Unneeded and pointless disclaimer to the regular Hotair readership: the Democrats don’t actually use the word “surrender”, but it’s clear what they mean.)
thuja on December 20, 2007 at 1:03 PM
Oh, you can count on the media to play up this narrative well before the general as a way to guilt the electorate into supporting their guy.
Mark V. on December 20, 2007 at 1:14 PM
Good for Obama not to swing at that ugly softball. Just after Cuomo fumbled out his question (say what you like about Mario, the man could speak), there was a pause of about 2 sec during which you could almost see the “WTF?” thought balloon over Obama’s head.
Also, it was interesting that the list of reasons Obama gave for people to vote for him consisted of health care, jobs and “improving our standing in the world and making us safe.” No mention (explicitly, anyway) of Iraq or ending the war. Darn that surge!
ronbo on December 20, 2007 at 1:15 PM
Since only Democrats are involved in voting for or against Obama at this point, Cuomo must be talking about all those racists voting against St. Barack. Or am I missing something?
Jeffersonian on December 20, 2007 at 1:22 PM
The way I see it, the MSM’s narrative is a plus for the Republicans in the general election. If Obama loses, then Republicans can claim that the Democrats are racist. If Hillary loses, then the Democrats are sexist. Who wants to vote for a party that is inherently sexist or racist? And if Silky Pony wins the nominations, then its even a better deal.
DFWShook on December 20, 2007 at 1:35 PM
No.

sure, blacks in America have 16% the mean wealth of whites and make little over half the income, but gosh darn it they should be happy they live at such a good standard! People like Oprah, Rice and Powell are great role models, but unfortunately they also often seem to reinforce incorrect perceptions on inequality. Depending on how the question is asked between 40-60% of americans think blacks are doing as well or better than whites in terms of housing, education, jobs and income. Nothing could be further from the truth. I wouldn’t go so far as to say America is inherently racist, but our constitution was for nearly 200 years and there certainly must be something fueling such disturbing inequality. It sure as hell ain’t hip-hop music and blacks just “being lazy”.
crr6 on December 20, 2007 at 3:05 PM
WOW! What a coincidence! What are the odds?
I was saying just yesterday, that if Obama ever shows up on GMA with that Chrissy “The Paperboy” Cuomo (who, of course, must be a mobster because he’s I – talian), then I won’t be able to vote for him because of my inherent racism!
I mean, I just loved Obama and all his policies after his Today Show and Harry Smith cameos, etc., but I knew I wouldn’t be able to vote if he ever went on GMA cus’, eww, he’s Black!
Sorry Barack.
Oh, and thanks for the wake-up call Chris.
Teddy on December 20, 2007 at 4:17 PM
Your first argument reeks of the same one feminists use to combat supposed “income inequality.” The only true comparison one can make for income equality is the same position at the same kind of job.
For instance, my income is probably a small fraction of Kanye West’s. However, that’s comparing a Catholic reporter to a famously egotistical rapper.
What you’d have to do is compare white engineers to black engineers and vice versa. If more blacks are in social work and more whites are in multi-million dollar corporations, chances are the mean incomes between the races will be skewed heavily towards whites.
That isn’t racism, that’s cooking statistics, and it’s a hallmark of the feminist movement and the poverty pimps.
Black culture and specifically the cardinal sin of “acting white” by being hard working, academically vigorous, and successful isn’t helping any blacks get out of the hole. Nevermind the out-of-wedlock births thanks to the entitlement mentality propagated by The Justice Brothers and liberal democrats everywhere.
BKennedy on December 20, 2007 at 4:21 PM
I think you misunderstood the point. Black people may make the same income as whites with similar positions (I don’t know, I’ve never seen a study on it), but they aren’t able to get to those positions in the first place. There may not be racism once blacks manage to “make it”, but there is racism which prevents many from “making it”, this accounts for the grossly disproportionate representation of blacks in high-income positions. People who point to inequality statistics aren’t saying “hey, look blacks make less than whites with the same position”, they’re saying blacks aren’t getting to the positions whites have. The cultural argument is the same tired one used right after Jim Crow laws were abolished. People recognized that blacks lived in ghettos, but they asserted it was “by their own choice”. Why would be people choose to be poor? It’s sad many in America still haven’t moved past blaming the victim. Cultural considerations may be applicable for small inequalities, but ones as vast as the ones I mentioned? That’s reaching quite a bit.
crr6 on December 20, 2007 at 5:02 PM
That is also the same tack the feminists take. Maybe blacks aren’t applying for high-end big business positions in huge numbers. Maybe blacks, seeing the crap that passes for “acting black” in their culture are more drawn to the humanities and social services which pay less then big business. That’s the problem with feminists and the poverty pimps, all they look at is the Almighty Dollar. Money leads to happiness they say. The recent news is that black home ownership and black business ownership is up and more blacks are moving out of the ghetto into suburban areas. While they aren’t making CEO salaries they are clearly advancing. Home ownership and job satisfaction are much more reliable indices of equality and prosperity then how many figures a person makes.
True or False: Black culture as promoted by the rap music industry glorifies being a “gangster,” selling drugs, and treating women in general, but espically black women, like disposable chattle. What’s your defense, that slim shady was white? Fact is black culture (which, if you read Dr. Sowell’s work is really just white redneck culture) is selling blacks short. Kanye West and his bitch-nigga-ho music has probably caused more damage to the black community than all the white CEOs in America combined.
As Michael Savage calls them, they are the enemy within. Some black people are only in it for themselves and they don’t care how many “niggas” get piled up on the roadside as long as they’ve got their bling to show and their street cred in order.

Wasn’t it the Mario Cuomo campaign for Mayor of New York City many years ago against Koch, they came up with the smear job “Vote for Cuomo not the Homo”
Years later Clinton referred to Cuomo as something to do with the Mafia.
Prejudiced Democrats, they suppose to be against insulting groups.
StuLongIsland on December 20, 2007 at 11:43 PM
Bob Grant years ago on radio would refer to the father Mario as the Spacheem, had a whole rant. I am sure some fellow New Yorkers remember that.
StuLongIsland on December 20, 2007 at 11:44 PM
Well one thing we can agree on is the detrimental effect the negative parts of hip-hop have had on blacks. However if this is such an effect on the present inequality, how do you explain the still rampant inequality which preceded gangster rap. Ice Cube and the NWA pioneered the c-rap of today in the mid 90’s shouldn’t things have been infinitely better then if gangster rap were the cause?
