Via Fishbowl DC. Most people don’t know this, but singing is how we deal with the pain.
The pain of … demonization.
Dear Hitch,
Please stop with the North Korea analogy. You’re not helping.
Love, AP

North Korea? Well, I am hungry at the moment.

2 Timothy 3:1 – This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. [2] For men shall be lovers of their own selves, … proud, blasphemers, … unholy, [4] … lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God; [13] But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
Romans 1:21 – Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. [22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, … [25] Who changed the truth of God into a lie, …

How painful to be an atheist for some.
Thank Whoever I found agnosticism.
BL@KBIRD on December 19, 2007 at 2:11 PM
If I am not mistaken, I believe that some years ago, Christopher Hitchens wrote the forward to a book which argued that the Holocaust either didn’t happen or was exaggerated. He said once on Crossfire that the State of Israel has moral right to existence. His contempt for the State of Israel is so obsessive that it makes you wonder if there is some psychological reason for this contempt. I actually feel a little sorry for people like Mr. Hitchens who are so filled with hatred that they view anyone who disagrees with him as an enemy to be destroyed.

Tee hee!

Agnosticism (from the Greek a, meaning “without”, and gnosticism or gnosis, meaning “knowledge”)
Does that mean you found yourself without knowledge?

Chris is a great ally against Islam.
…but he’s also a prick.
MadisonConservative on December 19, 2007 at 2:15 PM
Ha! Xopher.
It’s good to see him singing in good cheer. I suppose he realizes that the inundation with Christmas songs and decorations have much more to do with capitalism than Christianity.
Christianity is essentially limited to the day, and the message, and the Nativity (notwithstanding the days of advent during the season leading up – but you don’t generally see that in public).
But the songs, the decorations, the overbearing in your face Christmas is mostly capitalism and not so much Christianity.

I think that Michelle has just given Mr. Hitchens a new nickname.
baldilocks on December 19, 2007 at 2:20 PM
Dear Hitch,
Don’t listen to affirmation-craving atheists who balk at your North Korea analogy. It’s just too apt.
Love,
E

yawn ..
redrock on December 19, 2007 at 2:28 PM
Keep it up. I’m sure that atheists who aren’t anti-theists want you to keep equating the Christmas season in a capitalist republic with 24/7/365 existence in a totalitarian government which keeps the majority of its citizens on a starvation diet and outlaws all religion. /sarc
baldilocks on December 19, 2007 at 2:28 PM
When Xtopher is starving in a prison camp for speaking against the Great Leader, then we may have an analogy.
NellE on December 19, 2007 at 2:30 PM
Ah, well, one will always have one’s critics. Okay, the guy’s an atheist and it’s Christmas. So instead of lambasting us all with how we (as Christians) kidnapped the pagan Solstice holiday and morphed it into a baseless excuse to celebrate somebody’s birthday (which hasn’t a molecule of Biblical evidence behind it), he makes a parody of Tom Lehrer with a metaphor for living in North Korea. On this point, he succeeds in a bit of a face-slap, as, yes, this time of year does impose the same music and the same et cetera ad infinitum until December 26th. Hardly a capital crime, I should imagine.
I love Christmas, I love my country and I get a kick out of anybody who has the gift of gab. If the HA crowd does not share such sentiments, it begs me to ask why this video was posted here in the first place.
Good will to all, enjoy the nog and drive safely.

Imagine a political Dudley Moore in “Arthur”
(just as sloshed though)

I believe I heard him say he was “short” at the beginning of this clip.
Not so – he is the biggest prick that ever lived !!
Why do people even acknowledge that he lives ??

True. And it’s a good thing that no one called for his execution.

Allahpundit on December 19, 2007 at 2:42 PM
The NoKo analogy was, I believe, meant in fun (or at least as fun as such analogies go). Even many Christians get tired of the capitalistic onslaught of Christmas music. The analogy of Christ and Il was funny but tasteless, and, in the end, rather false, since it is Santa whose face is as omnipresent as Il, not Christ.
Because he’s the can turn out the most eloquent defenses of American foreign policy? Just a guess….

Recognizing the complete absence of any need to suck up to the boss, that was honestly the funniest thing I’ve seen all day.
James on December 19, 2007 at 2:49 PM
He’s pretty drunk. Drunker than normal.
However, I like Christmas, Christmas Carols, Christmas Specials, Christmas Football and Christmas Presents. Christmas is the ultimate holiday. Seeing as how I made sure I would get what I wanted, this may well be the Christmas ever.
That he doesn’t like Christmas is his problem. Then again, I’m not joining his church.

You call THAT singing????
Always Right on December 19, 2007 at 3:09 PM
I can forgive Hitchens many things, but his butchering of the Tom Lehrer “Chrismas Carol” is beyond the pale.
I grew up with that song, dangit.

MadisonConservative on December 19, 2007 at 2:15 PM
I just thought he was ballsy. I view Hitchens as the counter balance to religious zealots who would legislate the country back to the Spanish inquisition. Moderation in all things. Although I do believe there is a place for Christianity in politics in the form of principles such as ethics, honesty and telling the truth. Once upon a time ,long ago and far away………………………

I’m a Vatican Rag man, myself.
First you get down upon your knees
Fiddle with your rosaries
bow your head with great respect and…
genuflect, genuflect, genuflect
Make a cross on your abdomen
When in Rome, do like a Roman
Ave Maria, Gee it’s good to see ya!
Gettin ecstatic and sorta dramatic
while doin’ the Vatican Rag!
They just don’t write songs like that anymore!
thejackal on December 19, 2007 at 3:17 PM
As I’ve pointed out before, it’s a bit silly for someone to rail against religion with religious fervor. The only claim sillier than saying you know there is a great invisible being in the sky who controls everything, is saying you know there isn’t.
I like Hitch, and I’m not religious at all. I can still get pissed off at the mudslinging at a religion that has done little to deserve it in modern times. For all you DUers lurking, no, I’m not referring to Islam.
MadisonConservative on December 19, 2007 at 3:24 PM
He was one of a kind, wasn’t he?
Hitch strikes me more as a “Bright College Days” type.
Turn on the spigot,
Pour the beer and swig it,
And gaudeamus igit-itur.**
…
Oh, soon we’ll be out amid the cold world’s strife.
Soon we’ll be sliding down the razor blade of life. (Oooh!)
(laughter) … Ready? …
But as we go our sordid separate ways,
We shall ne’er forget thee, thou golden college days.
Hearts full of youth,
Hearts full of truth,
Six parts gin to one part vermouth.
sulla on December 19, 2007 at 3:24 PM
Look on the bright side…
at least Hitch didnt butcher “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire” by Nat King Cole.
For my money, the best Xmas song evah.

There are plenty of current laws on the books that the left views as being oppresive if not a violation of their rights. They were legislated with Christian principles in mind and can be traced directly to the bible. I basicaly have no problem with them becaused I have been following them to the best of my ability all my life.
sonnyspats1 on December 19, 2007 at 3:50 PM
The left also thinks waterboarding is as bad as electrocution, eye removal, and drilling of the hands.

Without the knowledge of the true nature and will of God, yes.
We all are, some just don’t know it.
BL@KBIRD on December 19, 2007 at 4:54 PM
Yeah but he didn’t do it because he supports the Holocaust but because he supports free speech and David Irving was imprisoned in Austria on the suspicion that he might deny the Holocaust. Mark Steyn holds to the same position as Hitchens on this issue, as do I.
Can’t defend the anti-Israel remarks though I would add that the only convincing anti-Israel article I’ve ever read was Hicthens’ piece Broadcasts in Blaming the Victims: Spurious Scholarship and the Palestinian Question ed. Edwards Said, Christopher Hitchens. Worth reading if only to challenge yourself.

AP, I fear you are too easily embarrassed by atheist crudeness. But philosophical/religious crudeness is everywhere: how the faith and religion of the Huckster supporter connect, my first cousin’s first Baptist Church which got into the New York Times for saying that if vote Democratic you’ll go to hell, the petty unending anger of the muslims, the insipid chanting of peace of the Hippy Buddhist, and so forth.
Our religious crudeness is worse than our naked bodies. Some small number of us are attractive naked.
