What is your point? Nuns dress in habits, but Catholic women do not dress like nuns. Are you defending the practice of forcing women to wear Hijabs? I don’t understand what you’re getting at.

It is good to remember that burkas are not 6th century inventions, however. Now if I can just remember where I read that!

No, I think it was pretty much common dress everywhere for a woman to cover her head when she was out and about even in the 6th century.

Burkas are more than just head covering, and I recall reading that Burkas are actually a 20th Century invention, but I can’t remember where I read it. Mark Steyn? James Michener in Caravans? Michener doesn’t call them Burkas, but I’m drawing a blank on what he does call them.

I don’t think many would accuse Jones of apostasy or of being a liberal Christian.

Yeah. My grandmother would have probably gotten vocal with something like “What kind of heathen church is this? Christian women cover their heads in church!” I can almost hear her voice saying it now (rest her soul).

Heck, evne my grandmother wouldn’t think of going out without her head covered with at least a hat and the idea of going bare-headed into a church would have given her (and the other ladies of her age group) a heart attack.

18 years ago my best friend dated a girl from a Plymouth Brethren church. When he brought her to our church (Baptist) she was shocked and dismayed to see a woman leading the service, and not a single hat in sight. The two of them nearly married, but she never came back to our church.

No, I think it was pretty much common dress everywhere for a woman to cover her head when she was out and about even in the 6th century. That probably didn’t go completely away until the 19th century or so. Heck, evne my grandmother wouldn’t think of going out without her head covered with at least a hat and the idea of going bare-headed into a church would have given her (and the other ladies of her age group) a heart attack.
