Top Iranian cleric: Wear a headscarf or die

On Monday I posted a debate between Megyn Kelly and CAIR’s Ahmed Rehab, the latter arguing that “honor killings” are un-Islamic. He said that en route to condemning the murder of 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez, reportedly killed by her father for refusing to wear a headscarf. Rehab expressed shock that anyone would think killing anyone over wearing a headscarf was part of Islamic thinking.
Mr. Rehab needs to have a word with Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani. Or perhaps Hassani needs to have a word with Mr. Rehab.
Tehran, 19 Dec. (AKI) - A top Muslim cleric in Iran, Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani said on Wednesday that women in Iran who do not wear the hijab or Muslim headscarf, should die.
“Women who do not respect the hijab and their husbands deserve to die,” said Hassani, who leads Friday prayers in the city of Urumieh, in Iranian Azerbaijan.
“I do not understand how these women who do not respect the hijab, 28 years after the birth of the Islamic Republic, are still alive,” he said.
“These women and their husbands and their fathers must die,” said Hassani, who is the representative of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in eastern Azerbaijan.
The cleric even decries “skimpy headscarves” on his way to linking the Iranian Islamic Revolution to the “honor killing” custom that Mr. Rehab seems to have found so strange.

Good for him for publicly addressing this “domestic issue.”

I’m sure he was misquoted, or taken out of context, or maybe it’s just that Farsi, like Arabic, is too nuanced a language to be properly translated into our ugly, clunky English.

Skimpy headscarves? Skimpy headscarves!? You have got to be kidding me.

I thought that maybe I had read that wrong, so I went back and read it again. Nope- I read it correctly.

Can someone define “skimpy headscarf” to me? I’m drawing a blank on this one.
CookeyD on December 19, 2007 at 11:22 AM
I guess maybe they had an earlobe showing.
Matticus Finch on December 19, 2007 at 11:25 AM
This is certainly good material for Mark Steyn and Macleans.
A question about Sharia law: Should this be done by family members as honor killings, or does this fall under the purview of the Islamic State and public stonings?

Skimpy headscarves? The sluts…

There is something about a skimpy scarf that gets my blood pumping!

An earlobe or maybe a strand of hair?

AP/UPI (Tehran) A lightning-quick coup took place today in the formerly Islamic Republic of Iran, when an unknown number of American, British and other commandos stormed into the nation’s capitol and assassinated 100% of the religious clerics ruling the Iranian government. Amidst the bloodshed and carnage were leaflets printed in both Farsi and English, stating: “You want to live like barbarians, then learn to die like barbarians.”
Around the capitol, tens of thousands of women tore off their skimpy headscarves and paraded their Breck and VO5 hairstyles for the world to see.
No known motive has been established for the slaughter of the Islamic clerics.

Reminds me of the scene in “Not Without My Daughter” where Sally Fields’ headscarf slips back an inch and reveals (gasp!) her HAIR! This Iranian guy yells at her “Every hair on your head is like a dagger pointed straight at my heart!” Does that mean he loves her hair or that her hair will keeeeel him? Too bad Hollywierd doen’t have the gonads to make a movie like this anymore.

Where is CAIR denouncing this threat as ‘unislamic’? Where are the ‘moderates’ rioting in the streets for their horrid misrepresentation of Islam? Cartoons, riots and deaths. . . headscarfs - it’s in the Koran.

I’d say any headscarf can be defined as skimpy if that’s all that’s being worn.

Can’t believe no one has mentioned that husbands and fathers were included. These people are still living in the sixth century.

Pretty please.

It’s always fun to forward stories like this one to those among us who think our primary goal these days should be to “improve our image in the Muslim world.”
World B. Free on December 19, 2007 at 3:03 PM
Not our 6th Century. I’m no historian, but I think we had bipedalism, the concept of gravity and the whole skimpy-headscarf-is-bullsh!t pretty much down to an artform by then.

In 1992, the poet Sadiq Abd al-Karim Milalla found that
his work was “not particularly well-received”: He was beheaded by the Saudis for suggesting Mohammed cooked up the Koran by himself.

Didn’t you know? Hijabthongs, and Hijabkinis are all the rage in Tehran.

Excellent point. Puts a whole new dimension on the Islamic interpetation of root causes of domestic violence. I hope someone sends this to the Canadian agency trying Steyn.

Still have a hard time getting worked up over two thousand years of Muslim on Muslim crime, when the Muslims don’t seem to give a crap about it. I’ll follow Indonesia’s lead. If they get pissed, I’ll get pissed.

“nd the whole skimpy-headscarf-is-bullsh!t pretty much down to an artform by then”
No, I think it was pretty much common dress everywhere for a woman to cover her head when she was out and about even in the 6th century. That probably didn’t go completely away until the 19th century or so. Heck, evne my grandmother wouldn’t think of going out without her head covered with at least a hat and the idea of going bare-headed into a church would have given her (and the other ladies of her age group) a heart attack.
crosspatch on December 19, 2007 at 5:14 PM
18 years ago my best friend dated a girl from a Plymouth Brethren church. When he brought her to our church (Baptist) she was shocked and dismayed to see a woman leading the service, and not a single hat in sight. The two of them nearly married, but she never came back to our church.
Frozen Tex on December 19, 2007 at 5:21 PM
I suppose some Christians forget what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians chapter 11.
crosspatch on December 19, 2007 at 5:22 PM
Yeah. My grandmother would have probably gotten vocal with something like “What kind of heathen church is this? Christian women cover their heads in church!” I can almost hear her voice saying it now (rest her soul).
crosspatch on December 19, 2007 at 5:33 PM
I remember when we were taught that women shouldn’t wear make-up. Bob Jones II was asked about that once. His response was that even an old barn needs new paint.
I don’t think many would accuse Jones of apostasy or of being a liberal Christian.

Burkas are more than just head covering, and I recall reading that Burkas are actually a 20th Century invention, but I can’t remember where I read it. Mark Steyn? James Michener in Caravans? Michener doesn’t call them Burkas, but I’m drawing a blank on what he does call them.
Buy Danish on December 19, 2007 at 5:49 PM
Nevermind! I was distracted by the photo which at first glance looks like more than just a headscarf. Anyway, while our grandmother’s wouldn’t have dreamed of going to church without a hat, it wasn’t because they feared for their lives.
It is good to remember that burkas are not 6th century inventions, however. Now if I can just remember where I read that!

Why do you think nuns in the traditional garb dress that way?
crosspatch on December 19, 2007 at 7:04 PM
Because Allah tells them too? Oops, better add a “/sarc” there.
What is your point? Nuns dress in habits, but Catholic women do not dress like nuns. Are you defending the practice of forcing women to wear Hijabs? I don’t understand what you’re getting at.

Show me the verse where he added “And kill ‘em if they don’t cover their heads. And kill their fathers while you’re at it.”
