“Brutal”: Fred’s painfully awkward day in Iowa; Update: Video added; Update: Misrepresented?

posted at 3:40 pm on December 19, 2007 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

The quote comes from the boss, rendering her verdict in the comments to the headline item on Politico’s account of his latest campaign stops. I actually winced while reading it, so astoundingly inept and almost antisocial does it make him sound. The narrative as of this morning is that he’s back and on fiah but wade through this and tell me the Fredheads aren’t pumping a dry well here.

There’s too much to excerpt but I have to quote this: “I’ve got a silly hat rule.” Wait until you see the context.

Update: I imported comments from the headlines item. Commenter “amish” notes that author Roger Simon is no fan of Fred but it’s not so much the commentary that’s damning, it’s the quotes. Mark Halperin, who was supposedly with Simon when all this went down, linked to the piece. If he thought it was unfair, he didn’t say so in his post.

Update: Bob Novak declares him the “X factor.”

# The “X factor” in this race is former Sen. Fred Thompson (Tenn.). Most Iowa Republicans did not even mention his name in discussing candidates they supported or opposed. He simply does not register in the minds of potential GOP caucus-goers, but when asked about him, voters have little negative to say.

# Thompson has far more upside potential than any other Republican, and he is spending the entire final stretch in the Hawkeye State. Thompson has perhaps the most broadly conservative record of any candidate besides the three congressmen (see below). Many conservative Iowans currently settling for Romney, Giuliani or Huckabee (or planning a protest vote of sorts for one of the congressmen) could certainly jump on board with Thompson. If he defies his reputation as a lazy worker, he could make a spectacular surge here…

# This battle will hinge on Thompson’s performance down the stretch. If he excels, he could draw down Huckabee’s support significantly, and maybe Romney’s, too. If Thompson is as uninspired as he has been to date, Huckabee will probably win.

Update: Via Slublog, here’s the video of the scene at the firehouse. It’s not as awkward as it sounds in Politico but the “silly hat” was indeed politely declined. Click the image to watch.

fred-hat.jpg

Update: Sundries Shack notes that Simon’s account of the firehouse doesn’t quite square with the video: for one thing, Jeri Thompson doesn’t put the helmet on her own head, Fred puts it on her. I don’t think that detracts from the point about not putting the helmet on, but to the extent that it calls Simon’s credibility into question on other details, fair enough.

That was…brutal.

Michelle on December 19, 2007 at 2:38 PM

Indeed.

Jay on December 19, 2007 at 2:40 PM

I would say “ahhh…big deal”, about the whole visit.
But insulting the Fire Chief?
THAT’S a big deal and NOT smart!
Bad move Fred. I’m voting for Jeri.

SouthernPride on December 19, 2007 at 2:42 PM

Ouch baby, very ouch. “Silly hat rule”? There is a difference between silly pandering and soft insults.

Spirit of 1776 on December 19, 2007 at 2:43 PM

The accompanying photo doesn’t jibe with the negative commentary.

Anyone remember Dukakis with his head sticking out of a tank or the John Kerry “bunny suit?”

KelliD on December 19, 2007 at 2:59 PM

When I was six, I used to watch Dusty’s Treehouse. In one episode, Dusty made a short film of himself walking in a doorway and taking off his hat. Then he replayed it three times, each time with different music: scary, comical, and dramatic.

It was the same piece of film, but the music colored his expression.

How can I know what really happened in Iowa? There are no more journalists, only campaign hacks working off a separate set of books.

Connie on December 19, 2007 at 2:45 PM

I agree. Looks like everyone is pretty happy and no sign of a “sour face” in that photo.

I think the writer is most likely an anti-Fred hack.

Gregor on December 19, 2007 at 3:04 PM

Okay, at the risk of coming across as a hero-worshipping groupie, I’m going to defend Fred.

1. I’ll bet he told that newspaper editor that his positions and plans on all the important issues are outlined in great detail on his web site for her to peruse and quote at her leisure. She, being predisposed to dislike him (she said before Fred arrived, “Bluntly, I dont know why he is running.”), was not inclined to go read his web site and give his ideas a fair shake.

2. It’s really small town (pop. 9,000), and I’d be inclined to believe that Simon was exaggerating the value of walking its street.

3. I sincerely doubt that Thompson stood in the firehouse with a sour expression on his face saying nothing. I also am willing to bet that the fire captain was not insulted by the “silly hat” comment, because it was probably made with a good-natured smile, and the fire captain probably immediately realized that politicians DO look silly wearing other people’s professional uniforms and equipment.

Other than that, Thompson may need to go through some more monkey-grabbing-for-a-peanut motions every once in awhile, like Hillary did by walking door-to-door last week, just to appease the early state voters’ expectations that he will follow their script (i.e. kiss their collective behinds) to some degree. But Hillary looked desperate and tired doing it, so I can’t say that I’m sure it’s the right path.

Anyone remember Dukakis with his head sticking out of a tank or the John Kerry bunny suit?

KelliD on December 19, 2007 at 2:59 PM

That’s exactly right, and it’s almost guaranteed that if Fred had put the hat on … it would have shown up throughout the internet within hours as the butt of jokes.

Fred’s not stupid, and he was most likely well aware of the motives of reporters and cameramen in the room.

Gregor on December 19, 2007 at 3:06 PM

Anyone remember Dukakis with his head sticking out of a tank or the John Kerry bunny suitgiant condom suit?

KelliD on December 19, 2007 at 2:59 PM

I’ve seen the Dukakis tank pic, and the Kerry pic was funny as hell, he looked like a giant condom.

Bad Candy on December 19, 2007 at 3:07 PM

All I can say is: consider the source. When you start with a preconceived notion, you’ll continue it.

Or as they say in the small towns of Iowa: What a load of crap.

Tennman on December 19, 2007 at 3:08 PM

Gregor on December 19, 2007 at 3:04 PM

I don’t think he’s a hack, but the picture certainly doesn’t ring true with the article. My guess is he’s just as biased as many are due to the media coverage. If Fred isn’t a dancing monkey, they consider him lazy.

MadisonConservative on December 19, 2007 at 3:10 PM

It’s inevitable. Huck’s coming to screw us all.

thareb on December 19, 2007 at 3:12 PM

I’m not gonna assume its 100% bunk, but I’m not gonna assume its true either, given that most of what I’m reading about recent Fred! campaign showings have been pretty positive, this just seems like an outlier or out of place.

Bad Candy on December 19, 2007 at 3:14 PM

Go and read some of Roger L. Simons other articles on Fred.

I have a comment “awaiting moderation.” Does that mean that im the only one who can see it? Too many links i bet.

We’re talking almost csdeven levels of Fred bashing.

RushBaby on December 19, 2007 at 3:34 PM

From the article:

While sometimes he displays bursts of energy at a speech here or there, he is often described as laconic on the road.

“Laconic” doesn’t mean “lazy”. The writer needs a thesaurus.

Clint Eastwood’s bad-ass cowboy characters were frequently described as “laconic”.

He may be a bit too “no nonsense” to put on a firefighter’s helmet? That’s just been offered to him by the chief?

I’ll take nonsense then, thanks.

Allahpundit on December 19, 2007 at 3:46 PM

Let’s see. A newspaper editor gets Fred one on one in their office.

‘What did he say?’ asks a pundit

‘Nuttin’ says the editor

Sounds like the editor needs to be on a paper with 9,000 potential customers.

If that was an example of what he is doing in Iowa then my boy is TOAST, burnt, no butter. Somehow I think Mr.Simon might be a tad-bit sorry that HE was in a town of 9,000. Where is the Starbuck’s anyway?

normsrevenge on December 19, 2007 at 3:52 PM

Speaking as the son of a fireman for a sec, people wear those silly hats when they’re inside infernos and dodging falling debris to save other people’s lives. Fred wouldn’t have looked like a Dukakis in that helmet, because he’s not a Dukakis. Regardless, don’t call a fire helmet a “silly hat.” That’s one of the more revolting things I’ve heard a politician say to a first responder.

Most people don’t offer to put you in a tank and bunny suit photos are always ridiculous.

What would the internet meme be… oh wait, I know:

“Fred must have gotten an upgrade on that red truck.”

That’s real damaging, that.

This is a case where the idiocy of insulting the fire chief outweighs the potential damage of an internet meme.

Although with Jeri plenty of inapropriate non-truck related memes come to mind.

amerpundit on December 19, 2007 at 3:57 PM

The Politico is a Clinton hit rag. Remember that Politico debate with nothing but gotcha questions?

When you read that Politico is the source, just think Huffpo, and it will all be clear.

Don’t be so easily led by the nose.

AZCON on December 19, 2007 at 3:58 PM

Maybe not, but once he puts on the helmet and grins, how much will media outlets and blogs make him out to be one?

The problem with Dukakis is that he didn’t fit the helmet. He simply looked stupid and small in the helmet and tank. Thompson’s a big guy, and posing in a fire fighter’s helmet next to actual firefighters would have been a pretty good photo op.

Slublog on December 19, 2007 at 3:58 PM

No, I want the dude not to be so standoffish. No one’s going to fault him for putting on a firefighter’s helmet at a photo op with firefighters.

You’re concerned about one image portrayed to the public,, he is about another.

Obviously everyone would get a yuck out of it.

Does this qualify him as standoffish? Heck, his wife wore it, fine, but she isn’t running for the leader of the free world.

It’s a degree of perception. We don’t agree. That’s fine.

Curious.. Would it make you not vote for him?

RushBaby on December 19, 2007 at 4:01 PM

If Dukakis had a “silly hat rule” he might have been elected President.

See all this time I thought it was an issue of a juxtaposition of image and substance. Like the picture of the soldier with Hillary while crossing his fingers. If Dukakis had a message of strength it would have played out much differently – but he didn’t, so it didn’t.

It’s like saying Rudy looks silly with a NYFD cap. He doesn’t. The context sets the impact.

Spirit of 1776 on December 19, 2007 at 4:02 PM

I think I’ll pass on listening to a critique on Fred from Anelia Dimitrova, the Executive Regional Editor of the Waverly Democrat.

As Executive Regional Director covering a town with a population of 9,000 I have to wonder which region Anelia covers.

Everything within two blocks of Millies Diner on Main Street?

Iowa, the land of “We’re Important Once Every Four Years”.

You know … Fred! is my guy based on what he believes. But even I have to admit, I just have a hard time liking him. Sometimes he comes off as arrogant and annoyed. If he had the disposition and personality of Huckabee, but maintained the beliefs that make him Fred!, I couldn’t be happier.

You love to build him up then rip him a new one. There seems to be two FDT out there.

The way I see it is like this: Welcome aboard Pres. Hillary Clinton because the Huckster (sort of reminds me of Bob Dole)is one enormously beatable candidate!

The most animate voters have always been evangelicals whether you all want to acknowledge it or not. The rest of you are all “hold your nose”, half-hearted about my candidate types that’ll probably vote if you get off work early enough. Chances are you won’t.

So what does that leave us with? The same old tired conservative options we’ve been getting since Pres. Reagan left the scene. And I’ve just about had it. Those animated voters are gonna like you with a liberal type candidate who will sign one entitlement after another (no child left behind, faith-based initiatives, and prescription drug benefits). Plan on a Universal Health Care system in your near future. Let’s not forget about taken down that border fence while we’re at it. And while we’re whining and complaining about how we don’t have any freaking representation, we’ll be given the Democrats a candidate they can refer to as a Nazi religious fanatic. They get the SWEET twopher: 1. All the idiot ideas they want in place, 2. All the ability to yell their rethorical bologne.

Forget about it, I’m changing my name to ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Wake me up in 8 years when the storm is over.

Sultry Beauty on December 19, 2007 at 4:05 PM

Look, the question is–what ELSE did Fred do that day? If he went to another few cities, great.

But from what I recall of discussions of Fred’s schedule–this was likely the only thing he had planned for this day. And he couldn’t take the time to meet the peeps on the street?

Weak. Really weak.

Plus, calling a firefighter’s hat a “silly hat?” I don’t care if he was avoiding a Kerry moment–you offer another reason, like “I’m honored, but I’m not qualified to share the firefighter’s priviledges” or something. Don’t diss the firefighters hat.

Vanceone on December 19, 2007 at 4:06 PM

Fred is not a fireman.

Has he ever even played one on TV or in a movie?

Should he wear a cowboy hat?

Should he wear a surgeons cap?

Should he were a loggers head gear?

Context and circumstance!

When put on by a firefighter fighting a fire it is not a silly hat.

When put on by a campaigning politician for a photo op it is a silly hat.

A damn silly hat.

Good for Fred.

Bryan, Michelle, and Allah

Points well made, but larger point missed.

When FDNY wears the hat, it’s a tool for saving lives.

If FDT (or any other politician) wears the hat – he looks like a tool.

When FDNY wears it, it’s far from silly. The moment a Senator puts it on, it becomes silly.

Catch the difference?

I would hate to see it as a campaign buster but as we all see, everyone has their opinion. In a few weeks , we can always include it in the final dissection of the Iowa primary adventure.

fyi- I have not viewed the video portions btw , only read the Politico piece.

normsrevenge on December 19, 2007 at 4:16 PM

Should Fred slide down the pole too if the fire chief says to? You guys have gotten so used to shameless pandering that you expect it from every politician.

That’s not a story; that’s a hit piece. Journalists are about as loathesome as the politicians they cover.

Zach on December 19, 2007 at 4:16 PM

Much ado. Thompson isn’t a fireman.

Indian chiefs are noble and dignified; Thompson would look like a tool in a feathered headdress. Unless he let out a war whoop. That would be awesome.

Cuffy Meigs on December 19, 2007 at 4:16 PM

Yea, I should listen to and make my judgements based on the judgements of people who act like former Pres. William Jefferson…

Hmmmm? **scratches head, licks index finger, puts it up into the air** Hmmm? ((finger not working)) eanie, meanie, minie, moo….

Sultry Beauty on December 19, 2007 at 4:17 PM

Keep spinning, guys.
That’s exactly what they’re doing. The true Fredhead is only one degree removed from the Paulnut in the fervor with which they apologize for their guy.

Allahpundit on December 19, 2007 at 4:01 PM
I’m not apologizing for a damn thing. I don’t think he did anything wrong.

Fred is not a fireman.
…was my first thought.

MadisonConservative on December 19, 2007 at 4:12 PM

Ditto… I think Fred made the right call, insofar as not putting the hat on. Could he have handled it a bit more diplomatically? Sure… But he absolutely would have looked foolish with that hat on his head.

Nineball on December 19, 2007 at 4:18 PM

The Politico is a Clinton hit rag. Remember that Politico debate with nothing but gotcha questions?

When you read that Politico is the source, just think Huffpo, and it will all be clear.

Do not be led by the nose so easily.

what, no picture of him holding the hat with a sour look on his face?

Canadian Imperialist Running Dog on December 19, 2007 at 4:19 PM

Maybe he’s a P.J. O’Rourke fan.

Bad Candy on December 19, 2007 at 4:20 PM

He may not trust media motives as much as some folks here.:)

a capella on December 19, 2007 at 4:13 PM

got that right.

Ex-tex on December 19, 2007 at 4:21 PM

I think he meant more of the hat rule being silly, not necessarily silly hats.

StephC on December 19, 2007 at 4:21 PM

MB4 on December 19, 2007 at 4:07 PM

Keep telling yourself that. In politics, perception is reality. And the perception is he refused to put on a fireman’s hat, potentially calling it “silly”.

Kerry was doing a photo-op at a NASA facility and IIRC, Dukakis was in a NG parade. Fred could have maybe used a comment that was a bit more palatable. He may not trust media motives as much as some folks here.:)

a capella on December 19, 2007 at 4:13 PM

Dukakis looked ridiculous and Kerry was on his hands and knees. Fred was standing amongst firemen, offered a hat he (a tough looking, big man) would’ve looked fine in.

Is Halperin and Politico biased? Sure. Doesn’t matter a lick. Fred stepped in one and is getting called on it.

Limerick on December 19, 2007 at 4:11 PM

Good summary.

Would having worn the hat made him look silly? Potentially. Would he have been the butt of a few jokes? Maybe. But coming off as he did, is worse.

amerpundit on December 19, 2007 at 4:22 PM

Ditto… I think Fred made the right call, insofar as not putting the hat on. Could he have handled it a bit more diplomatically? Sure… But he absolutely would have looked foolish with that hat on his head.

Just for the sake of argument, lets say that he made the right call because he knew there was a conspiracy that the press told the chief to give it to him so they could make fun of him on the internet with it later. He could have easily take a picture holding it or even better, told the he wanted to take a pic w/ the chief and asked the chief to put it on. But he didn’t do that. Instead he dropped a line that was condescending (don’t insult a working man’s work or equipment).

If the story is wrong or misquoted, when then you have a gripe, but as it stands this is quite distasteful.

Fred Thompson ‘08: “I have a silly hat rule. I will not wear a silly hat even if it is offered to me by the authority responsible for maintaining and preserving he reputation and function that hat represents. Also, I punch hippies.”

BKennedy on December 19, 2007 at 4:23 PM

No, I want the dude not to be so standoffish. No one’s going to fault him for putting on a firefighter’s helmet at a photo op with firefighters.

Allahpundit on December 19, 2007 at 3:54 PM

So you want him to stand up and say I’m not going to raise my hand like a trained dog. I’m going to answer your stupid questions with stupid answers. But you want him to turn around a do the old ‘I’ll take a buck and kiss a$$ to everyone’ photo op? Make up your freaking mind.

Sultry Beauty on December 19, 2007 at 4:23 PM

I can’t wait until FRed visits a surgical center. :-}

normsrevenge on December 19, 2007 at 4:23 PM

Maybe a citizen journalists could get on the phone to the firehouse and ask the fire chief if he was offended and what his take on the visit was. I know I wouldn’t mind hearing what he thinks.

KelliD on December 19, 2007 at 4:10 PM

I spent the first 40 years of my life living about 40 miles from Waverly. I doubt the 9000 good citizens are nearly as outraged as some on this board. Iowans are pretty laid back and I suspect the influx of illegals into Swift’s meat processing facility in Marshalltown is a lot more important to them than Fred not wearing a fireman’s hat.

For want of a silly hat Iowa was lost, For want of Iowa the Republican nomination was lost, For want of the Republican nomination the Presidency was lost, For want of the Presidency America was lost, For want of America the World was lost, And all for the want of a silly hat.

- Benjamin Fred

MB4 on December 19, 2007 at 4:25 PM

Geeez….Fred is my man. He screwed up. What the hell is wrong in saying he screwed up? Instead of having to put up with some ’silly hat’ photo he now has to put up with campaign ads against him saying a fireman’s hat is silly. I agree that Simon bagged him. That is life on the campaign trail. If that is how is entire campaign is being handled then he IS toast. Time will tell.

Limerick on December 19, 2007 at 4:26 PM

I’M VOTING HUCK NOW.

Allahpundit on December 19, 2007 at 4:26 PM

There’s too much to excerpt but I have to quote this: “I’ve got a silly hat rule.” Wait until you see the context.

Yeah, that was not good.

It’s too bad. I would have loved it if he’d had a great campaign. He looked like a candidate I could have been passionate about.

However, I’ve just watched the video of the event. It still doesn’t paint Fred in the best possible light, but it’s a better light than how the above article showed him.

For anyone interested in the video…

Looked at the CBS video, it wasn’t that bad.

terryannonline on December 19, 2007 at 4:27 PM

Amazing how CBS can have a video ready in hours. They’re really quick with stories they care about.
