Breaking: Fire at the White House’s Old Executive Office Building Update: It’s out

Reportedly in the Vice President’s wing. The cable nets are on it. People are being evacuated on the 17th Street side of the building as I write. No injuries have been reported thus far.

Update: The fire is localized in that building, so the White House itself isn’t threatened.

Update: That was quick. DC’s bravest say the fire’s out.

Update: One minor injury reported. But don’t you know, this was just like the Reichstag fire?

Update: Brilliant. “Where there’s smoke, there’s derangement.”

Blowback

Looks like its out already.

Appears to be confined to a few offices, there will be some smoke damage.

Firemen broke out some the windows to ventilate.

rockhauler on December 19, 2007 at 10:08 AM

Cue HuffPost and DUmmie celebrations.

God…see, this is why modern technology sucks. Nothing exciting ever has time to BUILD anymore…

MadisonConservative on December 19, 2007 at 10:09 AM

Thank God no injuries.

Next up….Troothers go nuts.

Reichstag fire!!

flipflop on December 19, 2007 at 10:10 AM

President Bush sent in a team of highly-trained firesetting ninja CIA agents to destroy documents he secretly placed in there about the destroyed CIA tapes.

REMEMBER THE EISENHOWER BUILDING!!1!

amerpundit on December 19, 2007 at 10:11 AM

We should keep tabs on Kos and Huffpo to see if they’re upset Cheney wasn’t caught in it. (I refuse to go to those hate sites at work.)

BKennedy on December 19, 2007 at 10:12 AM

If it was a Christmas tree fire the ACLU will demand an investigation.

Limerick on December 19, 2007 at 10:16 AM

Hey - flipflop and amerpundit, lol - you were right on - the geniuses over at Democratic Underground have already started on both the Reichstag and document destruction memes.

Ha! The players change, but the game stays the same. :-)

amerpundit on December 19, 2007 at 10:21 AM

Btw, I think they still have fireplaces in a lot of offices in the OEOB, but they’re saying the fire was electrical.

That’s like betting if the sun will come out in the morning. I would love to hear what the conspiracy theories floating around their little heads though.

JVelez on December 19, 2007 at 10:23 AM

The DU’s are already busy on the Reichstag fire line.

lawhawk on December 19, 2007 at 10:24 AM

According to the news, the Secret Service has stopped fire investigators from entering the area just yet, you know that’ll really get the DU loons going.

JVelez on December 19, 2007 at 10:23 AM

I can tell you what the main theory will be right now.

“Cheneyburton is setting fire to incriminating records about his ties to big oil, his Illegal Wire Tapping(tm), and his secret torture camps.”

Lehosh on December 19, 2007 at 10:26 AM

I heard a red pickup truck was spotted headed away from the scene. Some bald guy and a blond.

Limerick on December 19, 2007 at 10:26 AM

Did anyone take Sandy’s matches away from him?

right2bright on December 19, 2007 at 10:28 AM

Reportedly in the Vice President’s wing.

Some nut must have thought that he had discovered the vaunted “undisclosed location”.

Bigfoot on December 19, 2007 at 10:29 AM

Bush knew.

Do you mean a “trophy” blond? Did he have a son stuffed in the back with a briefcase full of money, while driving a terrorist out of the country?

A spokesman for Blackwater said the Cheney family dog was unavailable for comment.

infidel4life on December 19, 2007 at 10:34 AM

Video CNBC had was showing significant flames in the interior of one office, lasting several minutes. Firemen breaking out the windows to ventilate the building had no trouble breaking the window glass. It didn’t appear to be ordinary window glass, but it wasn’t bullet proof either.

There was considerable smoke, so there was significant fire.

The responding fire department did a good job getting the fire out so quickly. Demonstrates a good emergency response plan in place, and correctly implemented.

rockhauler on December 19, 2007 at 10:34 AM

I was reading about this story on Drudge, and I was joking with a colleague that the left wing folks will be comparing this to the Reichstag fire. Well, they never fail to disappoint!

In my effort to be more bi-partisan, might I suggest to the lefties the name of “Flame-Plame-Gate” for any “scandal” coverage in the future.

Don’t forget throwing handfuls of asbestos at schoolchildren.

Darth Cheney used the force!

LarryinVA on December 19, 2007 at 10:57 AM

Was it started when a trash can full of computer keyboard ‘H’ keys were lit on fire?

James on December 19, 2007 at 10:59 AM

Ugh…was lit on fire.

While wearing Gucci shoes and then trading the red truck in for a golf cart to avoid suspicion.

BKennedy on December 19, 2007 at 11:21 AM

A despondent and possibly inebriated Al Gore was reached for comment…”Just think of all the carbon released into the air by this fire!”

CP on December 19, 2007 at 11:24 AM

Glad it’s out and nobody’s hurt. And the scum at DU demonstrate once again that they’re beyond parody.

ReubenJCogburn on December 19, 2007 at 11:32 AM

I’m assuming that, as this is an apolitical event, every pundit puditizing this is just practicing. There’s more to life, friends. Shut off the net for awhile.

Doug on December 19, 2007 at 11:39 AM

Anytime there’s a fire or explosion anywhere they pull that Reichstag fire crap out. They did it yesterday with the Fox News explosion.

They seriously can’t get over the fact that nobody cares about them enough to want to wield absolute authority over them.

Mark V. on December 19, 2007 at 11:58 AM

I’m just curious how exactly this will be woven into the Truther narrative over there in the lefty bizarro world.

Black smoke means the Illuminati have not selected next term’s president yet.

I have an alibi for today. I was there yesterday. Yesterday. And I didn’t go inside.

I just admired it from afar. Pretty building.
