Video: Bill Donohue thinks Huckabee’s Christmas ad was too religious?

posted at 11:41 am on December 18, 2007 by Allahpundit

Yeah, that Bill Donohue. President of the Catholic League, defender of the faith in his many cable news appearances, and successful crusader against life-sized anatomically correct milk chocolate Jesus. If Huck’s laying it on too thick for him, he’s laying it on too thick. Or is there something more to this? I’d be curious to know what Donohue thought of the very Catholic Sam Brownback incorporating “All for Jesus” into his stump speech.

Here’s Huck wondering why the people who trail him in the race persist in criticizing him during this season of peace. Doesn’t the holiday mean anything to them?

Perhaps they’ll relent a bit after all: It looks like he’s leveled off. Click the image to watch.

“Can’t we all just get along?”

I just wanna be loved; is that so wrong-guh?

Something more.

I’ve listened to Bill Donahue speak a lot on the Opie and Anthony show, and he is a very down to earth guy. Some of the things he advocates and fights against are stupid to me, but his explanation was as follows “I’m the head of the Catholic League, what do you expect me to do?”. Either way, I respect his honesty. As for Huckabee, he should just come out and say that he wants to create a state religion and wear a big hat as president. He wants to be pope of America.

muyoso on December 18, 2007 at 11:45 AM

Bill is part of that ilk that probably thinks being Catholic and Christian are not really the same.

I like the commercial, and the message, and don’t think that the corners of white shelving forming an uneven cross is a subtle propaganda tool to make people watching think that Huck is really Jesus.

Hening on December 18, 2007 at 11:48 AM

Huckabee called the ad inaccurate bc he was “hardly soft on crime”, pointing to the 16 convicted murderers he placed on death row. Huckabee described these tactics by his rivals as ” desperate… and…despicable. “

How is pointing out his own blasted record “despicable?” A glass jaw, indeed.

16 is a lot smaller than 1,023.

Bill Donohue thinks calling a homosexual a faggot on national television is proper discourse. I think we can really ignore anything he has to say.

Bill Donahue = James Dobson

I agree with them on a lot but their overbearing personalities piss me off.

Actually, the reverse is true, he’s probably concerned that Huck’s way too Protestant. Some Protestants get real pissy when Catholics call themselves Christian, though I wonder if its more a Southern thing, cuz I’ve never seen anything like that in PA.

I know someone going to college in MD who went to a Catholic bookstore, saw a person walk in who threw a sh*tfit because the store was advertised as a Christian Bookstore when it was clearly an eeevil Catholic bookstore, apparently that wasn’t an unusual reaction either. So that might be in play.

I liked Huck’s Christmas ad

I also liked this cheetah ad as well.

Considering Huck has a shoe string budget, they are very impressive.

Donahue tends to be a blow hard. And I’m a Catholic.

Yes, but it’s a fan vid. That’s a french commercial for a restaurant with new video added, made by a Huckabee supporter.

Slublog on December 18, 2007 at 12:30 PM

I’m not some supporter of Bill Donohue, and I’m a regular pisser-offer of Catholics around here, but he’s totally right… This is disgusting pandering by Huck. He’s not jumping in the polls because of his policies, he’s cashing in on the overwhelming number of Christians in the country, (and the media’s need to set up a ringer for the Democrats to take down). The ad isn’t that offensive, because in a way it’s actually refreshing to see a politician who has the balls to say “This holiday is about the birth of Christ….”, but at the same time, any ethical person recognizes the shameless and substance-less vote pandering that this is.

RightWinged on December 18, 2007 at 12:44 PM

He wants to be pope of America.

Do you really think so?

It just sounds nutty to me.

Well now that explains it.

bnelson44 on December 18, 2007 at 12:48 PM

Bill Donahue is the Catholic Al Sharpton.

Killgore Trout on December 18, 2007 at 12:41 PM

More like the Catholic JDL

bnelson44 on December 18, 2007 at 12:49 PM

Well now that explains it.

Yeah, between that ad, the Obama “1984″ ad and the one linked by Bryan for Fred Thompson, the amateurs are kicking the stuffing out of the professionals this season in terms of originality.

Slublog on December 18, 2007 at 1:04 PM

Huckabee is such a sanctimonious whiner. I’m glad that people are catching on, and welcome Bill Donahue’s input.

The other night Brit Hume said that Huckabee was “skiing in front of an avalanche’ and eventually it would catch up with him. It can’t be soon enough for me.

I was speaking to parents at a Catholic School and mentioned Christian values being an important part of education. A women jumped up and shouted over my lecture that the front of the school says, “Catholic” not “Christian”.

On the other hand, someone in a seminary class mentioned that they have met some Catholics that they actually think are saved.

I’m more the ecumenical type.

Hening on December 18, 2007 at 2:01 PM

It seemed to me that Huck was trying to look presidential in that Merry Christmas to all ad. A future ‘from the Oval Office’ message.
He definitely got his money’s worth, whatever he was attempting to do, it worked.

shooter on December 18, 2007 at 2:01 PM

Donahue doesn’t want someone ‘hawking’ Christianity, but that’s what he does.

If it was done by a Catholic Priest he doesn’t have a problem with it. He’s bigoted against non-Catholic Christians. Actually he thinks that is an oxymoron. He wants a pro choice Guiliani BECAUSE he’s Catholic, but doesn’t want a pro life Huckabee because he’s not ‘Christian enough’.

non-Catholic Christians talking about their faith offends him.

ThackerAgency on December 18, 2007 at 2:02 PM

Some Protestants get real pissy when Catholics call themselves Christian, though I wonder if its more a Southern thing, cuz I’ve never seen anything like that in PA.

It’s not so much that we don’t think Catholics are Christian, but we question some of the teachings of the Church. When we do, Catholics are appalled and cry ‘bigot’. Non-Catholic Christians DEPEND on the Bible as the word of God. Catholics depend on the clergy as to whether or not what they do is ‘Christian’ or not. The Bible is as close to Jesus’ uncorrupted words and deeds as you will get.

So long as the Catholics maintain the tenants of the Bible, non-Catholics don’t tend to judge. It’s when they point to the Pope, or the clergy for authority that Protestants get leary.

ThackerAgency on December 18, 2007 at 2:09 PM

Another Catholic here. Donohue? Opinions are generally right but issues bombast, insults and personal attacks when offended, not a good strategy. Plus he’s Mr. Grump; ya gotta *smile* for the camera if you expect anyone to actually listen to you.

I got yer great Catholic (and Christian) spokesman right here.

inviolet on December 18, 2007 at 2:24 PM

ThackerAgency on December 18, 2007 at 2:09 PM

So then why would they get pissy when Catholics call themselves Christian? Your response doesn’t address my point, its just “we don’t like your doctrine”, which is fine, but irrelevent…but you don’t seem to like Catholics too much, so I’m not real optimistic on you producing a valid point.

It is amazing how you think about things such as Christianity, first of all the Roman church ruled for how many years before there was a break away by the Protestant Revolution? No way is he supporting pro choice Guiliani, get your facts straight before you look like a Lib

That’s a good ad. But the dumb look on the cheetah at the end reminds me, actually, of Huck.
