Video: “The Dark Knight” trailer

Recognize the handsome devil in the front-page screencap? This isn’t the first time he’s been seen onscreen wielding his, er, blade at a Gyllenhaal.

This may be the first superhero movie the big A catches since the original Batman with Keaton and Nicholson.

Blowback

Looks like the lead singer for “The Cure”.

Mike Honcho on December 17, 2007 at 8:55 AM

The trailer was impressive. It came on right before I am Legend started. My son and I have already made plans to go see the movie when it comes out.

This Three Doors Down video was shown as well. Might be old news but it was new to me.

alilianstrom on December 17, 2007 at 8:55 AM

wow…..wow…wow

JVelez on December 17, 2007 at 8:55 AM

Saw that trailer when I went to see I Am Legend last evening, which was a very good film. They also had the new Rambo trailer. They watered that one down quite a bit compared to the online version earlier this year.

This Batman looks great.

Egfrow on December 17, 2007 at 8:58 AM

I…

Heath Ledger looks…like he’s doing a good job…

Hang on…why is the sky on fire and the lake boiling?

MadisonConservative on December 17, 2007 at 9:00 AM

Yeah, saw it before I am Legend this past weekend. Looks just spooky enough to be good.

Looks like the lead singer for “The Cure”.

Don’t make fun of Robert Smith.

sunny on December 17, 2007 at 9:01 AM

Did you seriously not only refer to yourself as “the big A,” but also in the third person?

Jesus. Step away from the blog. Go get some fresh air.

You and Chuck Adkins have a great deal in common.

Professor Blather on December 17, 2007 at 9:02 AM

Saw this trailer before I am Legend as well. Looks good.

I haven’t read the book for I am Legend, but I know they changed the ending. I would have liked to have seen them follow the book more closely, just to see how they would have done it.

Darksean on December 17, 2007 at 9:06 AM

This honestly made up for my sucky Giants losing to the skins

JVelez on December 17, 2007 at 9:09 AM

Why so serious?

Wicked. Looks great.

Dash on December 17, 2007 at 9:13 AM

Here’s the first 6 minutes of the film.

Looks the The Crow on a bad day, and in color.

BohicaTwentyTwo on December 17, 2007 at 9:16 AM

Blah…it doesn’t nearly look stylized enough. Though, aside from Batman & Robin (the one most people hate), I never really cared for the Batman live-action movies.

The “DC Animated Universe,” a set of animated shows that share a continuity from 1992 - 2005 (Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited) are the best adapatation of comic books, and all come from that great producer, Bruce Timm. He also recently released an excellent standalone animated movie, Superman: Doomsday.

This trailer just screams bland. And, I still am incredibly unimpressed by the boxy, unattractive vehicle designs from this movie series.

American_Pride1701 on December 17, 2007 at 9:19 AM

Professor Blather on December 17, 2007 at 9:02 AM

You’re so right, man. AP tounge in cheek calling himself “The Big A” is exactly like making fun of the tragic untimely death of someone’s wife.

/eyes roll off head

12thman on December 17, 2007 at 9:22 AM

Professor Blather on December 17, 2007 at 9:02 AM

Are you serious?

You normally seem sane and intelligent, but every now and then you go straight off into the deep end.

And as to the movie, I’m sure I’ll see it. The first one was really good. I’d argue it was better than the first Tim Burton one.

Esthier on December 17, 2007 at 9:35 AM

From the trailer, it looks to me like Ledger is trying too much to affect the mannerisms of Jack. Would be better if he put his own stamp on it.

Never seen Brokeback, but he’s been good in pretty much everything I’ve seen him in (especially The Patriot). But here I think he’s out of his element.

How much better would this be if they filmed it the way other Frank Miller adaptations had been done, like Sin City or 300? The Frank Miller Dark Knight series filmed like the graphic novel would ROCK.

otcconan on December 17, 2007 at 9:46 AM

Looks like the lead singer for “The Cure”.

Mike Honcho on December 17, 2007 at 8:55 AM

Dude. Go easy on Fat Bob. An Insane Clown Posse reference would have been more appropriate.

Can’t view this trailer at work, but if it’s half as good as the last Batman movie (with Christian Bale) I’m there.

Hannibal Smith on December 17, 2007 at 9:50 AM

Batman/Gotham City is not supposed to be stylized. That was the vision that Burton/Shu had, this is more in line with Frank Miller, action comics style. Looks really good.

JVelez on December 17, 2007 at 9:54 AM

Shakes the Clown 2: Even Shakier

I really wish I were more jazzed to see this. I read all the Batman and Detective Comics and Brave and the Bold and World’s Finest and JLA (even the Joker’s own book, from Issue 1) back in the ’70s.

I respected Batman Begins for making me believe a man could wear a bat suit, but I didn’t enjoy it. And I hated Nicholson’s fat old Prince-fan Joker.

Make sure to check out Batman: Dead End on YouTube. Yes, it’s a fan-made Batman vs. Joker vs. Predators and Aliens short… and yet not nearly as ridiculous as it sounds.

I came so close to choking on my tea as I read that. Thanks for a laugh to start the day!

jdog on December 17, 2007 at 10:00 AM

P.S. And if I had any credibility left, here it goes:

I liked Daredevil.

And Cesar Romero is my favorite Joker, painted-over ’stache and all. He actually seemed to be insane and loving it.

saint kansas on December 17, 2007 at 10:00 AM

Daredevil–Black edition actually makes the movie watchable…. Movie version was hot garbage

JVelez on December 17, 2007 at 10:08 AM

Hey Allah, if you really did not see “Batman Begins,” you owe it to yourself to check it out. I thought it was great fun.

According to IMDB, Katie Holmes is not in this one at all. That’s too bad. I was initially skeptical of her being cast in “Batman Begins,” since she was too young in real life for the role of a junior DA. But I thought she did very well in the role.

Anton on December 17, 2007 at 10:11 AM

The laugh is weak. They need to go back into editing and dub in the Hillary Cackle to make this guy really scary.

Dudley Smith on December 17, 2007 at 10:17 AM

From what I understand, Ledger is not copying the Jack Nicholson Joker, but modeling his character on “The Killing Joke”. My nerd friends assure me that “The Killing Joke” is the ultimate Joker origin story.

Must see this movie.

Really? You haven’t even seen the X-Men? There is some good stuff out there. Ditto on Batman Begins. The rest of them blow.

I liked Daredevil.

persona non grata :P

True, that will be the joker “model” but I dont think his origin will be explained. Plus it seems to be more of a painted face w/ scarring than the skin exposed to chemicals….

JVelez on December 17, 2007 at 10:34 AM

Daredevil–Black edition actually makes the movie watchable…

Yeah, that’s the one I saw. With Coolio. Yes, the movie apparently got better when they put Coolio back in. Who knew the prescription was… more Coolio?

Sure, it sucked that Ben Affleck was Daredevil. However, you also got to see Ben Affleck take a lot of punishment from real actors, so there was a silver lining.

OK, should we move on to Hulk, or just let it rest in the name of world peace?

saint kansas on December 17, 2007 at 10:46 AM

saint kansas on December 17, 2007 at 10:00 AM

I agree, Cesar Romero set the standard. Jack Nickleson’s character was interesting, but to me, it wasn’t the Joker. I haven’t liked any of the Batman Film’s villans, except for Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman.
And as far as Maggie Gylenhaal is concerned - she gets ravaged online about her looks but I think she’s sexy as hell.
I would have to say that my favorite comic book movie villain of all time is Hackman’s Lex Luthor, although Kevin Spacy did an excellent job. Doctor Octopus was great in the second Spiderman flick.

Dork B. on December 17, 2007 at 10:47 AM

Hulk pissed me off. They tried to make people think…screw that. Hulk smash is a pretty easy concept. Hopefully Norton will make it better. Ras Al Ghoul was pretty cool. Im looking forward to Two-face

JVelez on December 17, 2007 at 10:49 AM

I think I can hold on till it comes out on cable (snort, chortle.)

I didn’t realize that anyone had actually ever watched Daredevil. Anyone who made it past the first fifteen minutes has my respect…and condolences.

Oldnuke on December 17, 2007 at 10:54 AM

I like Batman, but I don’t like the villains. They always seemed incredibly ridiculous to me. An evil clown? A penguin? The Riddler? (I don’t know how to categorize him.) The only decent one is catwoman, and you know what they did to that…

JohnW on December 17, 2007 at 11:05 AM

This was the best part of our ‘I Am Legend’ outing this weekend.

Speaking of - ‘Legend’ sucked. Had to watch ‘Omega Man’ when I got home to get the bad taste out of my brain.

Back to the topic on-hand - doesn’t this Joker look a lot like the Crow?

Timothy S. Carlson on December 17, 2007 at 11:07 AM

I didn’t realize that anyone had actually ever watched Daredevil. Anyone who made it past the first fifteen minutes has my respect…and condolences.

OK, believe it or not… I was thinking about this earlier today: I’ve discovered I just really dig watching people dodge things in slo-mo. (Dodgeball excepted.)

Daredevil dodged a lot of stuff; it’s what he does. So I liked that. Spiderman did some cool slo-mo dodging in the burning building in Spider-Man. And, of course, the rooftop scene in The Matrix made a nation fall in love with dodging things in really slo-mo.

saint kansas on December 17, 2007 at 11:08 AM

This “Joker” looks more like “The Crow” than the Joker. You gotta love movies now being remakes (Batman 2008)of remakes (Batman 1988) of remakes (Batman TV show) of comic books. Next they’ll be coming out with Superman Re-re-re-returns: Part II, Redoux.

I think I know how this movie will end. About like how the last ones with the same characters, plot and storyline ended from the last one.

Planet Boulder on December 17, 2007 at 11:17 AM

You have to realize that a good bunch of these comic book movies would be so much better if they eliminate the child filter. Thats why I think Batman Begins rocked.

Daredevil has serious issues yet they made him cheesy.

But no movie sucked worse than Elektra. I mean she is not even a serious comic character…

JVelez on December 17, 2007 at 11:18 AM

I liked Daredevil quite a bit, too. It’s probably the only Ben Affleck movie I really like. Oddly enough, The Shadow is the only Alec Baldwin movie I really like, too.

Apparently, you can stick a raging leftist in a superhero costume and have him pummel some bad guys and I’ll like it.

Jimmie on December 17, 2007 at 11:19 AM

He’s got that voice down real good.

Vizzini on December 17, 2007 at 11:23 AM

Has anyone else noticed that the Joker has all the charisma this time around?

I mean, a lot of people loved Christian Bale as Batman, but there’s barely any mention of his name this time around. The posters, the marketing campaign, the “viral” stuff: it’s all Joker.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

saint kansas on December 17, 2007 at 11:55 AM

Headquaters, Charlie 3-11. 10-4, 10-73 (crazy person) on the Hot Air blog. I’m gonna need a medic and a supervisor on scene.

I can live with that. The Romero Joker was a product of the times. The Nicholson Joker was Jack Nicholson. This looks different, and really, really creepy.

If Ledger is being inspired by The Killing Joke, then it could well be worth price of admission to see another fully realized, non campy Batman bad guy. Ras was good start. The Joker should be incredible.

Krydor on December 17, 2007 at 12:17 PM

Paging Alicia Silverstone, Alicia Silverstone!

Kini on December 17, 2007 at 12:41 PM

You know what I don’t get? These movies keep getting darker and more violent, yet there’s no dearth of toy tie-ins and relentless marketing to kids, nor will there be for this movie, I’m sure.

That’s why my son and I keep handy the Adam West/Burt Ward “Batman” movie with all the classic baddies played by Gorshin, Romero and Meredith and a one-time Catwoman turn by Lee Meriwether. There’s just nothing like dialogue like “Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb!” (or, “Robin, hand down the Bat Anti-Shark Repellent!”) I mean, come on!

Captain Scarlet on December 17, 2007 at 12:53 PM

“My nerd friends assure me that “The Killing Joke” is the ultimate Joker origin story”.

Are you crazy? What if you turn off the torch? Etc. I felt it was okay, but after all the hype it seemed no more or less than another origin retelling.

I was hoping the Joker would be closer to the version in The Dark Knight Returns, i.e. David Bowie’s Thin White Duke mixed with Joel Grey from Cabaret. But he seems to be more like The Crow. Shame.

Apeking on December 17, 2007 at 1:06 PM

The original joker origin is a very sad, poiniant, powerful piece. I have yet to see a faithful adaptation of THAT.

I didn’t think much of “The Killing Joke”.

The Joker in this trailer doesnt strike me as the real deal, but I’ll keep an open mind.

dogsoldier on December 17, 2007 at 2:57 PM

Christian Bale = Yummy

The Ugly American on December 17, 2007 at 3:47 PM

The old Batman movies all sucked, however, Batman Begins kicked azz and was done the way Batman should be done, dark and serious. I can’t wait for part 2.

Tony737 on December 17, 2007 at 4:46 PM

Mark Hamill is the one true Joker.

Nonfactor on December 17, 2007 at 4:56 PM

Yep, Mark Hamill is the best Joker, and as someone else pointed out, the DC animated universe is a superb adaptation of DC heroes, especially Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. As for superhero movies, The Incredibles and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm outshine the live action movies.

Bill Ramey on December 17, 2007 at 5:37 PM

You know what? I pulled that out when “Batman Begins” came out and was too intense to take my son to. It fulfilled the purpose of telling Batman’s backstory, had cool clebs doing voices (the aforementioned Mark Hammill, plus Abe Vigoda, and the lovely Dana Delaney) and a well-scripted plot. It sure worked for my son.
