British Muslim woman: I need a new hymen ASAP or they’ll kill me

Hmmm. There’s no question this phenomenon is real; Channel 4 (UK) covered it last month, taking care not to specify the background of the patients beyond delicately noting that most are “from ethnic minorities or immigrants.” There also seems little question that the basic narrative traced in the Daily Mail piece would resonate with some of those patients. Even so, read it and tell me if you don’t find some of the quotations a bit too … perfect, or pat. To wit:
“My virginity was restored in a delicate operation just last week, and I honestly view it as life-saving surgery,” says Aisha.
“If my husband cannot prove to his family that I am a virgin, I would be hounded, ostracised and sent home in disgrace. My father, who is a devout Muslim, would regard it as the ultimate shame.
“The entire family could be cast out from the friends and society they hold dear, and I honestly believe that one of my fanatically religious cousins or uncles might kill me in revenge, to purge them of my sins. Incredible as it may seem, honour killings are still accepted within our religion.
Do Brits use phrases like “hold dear” in casual conversation? And doesn’t that last sentence seem a trifle too neatly expository? What about this, in which “Aisha” describes sleeping with her boyfriend: “I wasn’t just a little Muslim girl, I was an independent young woman who could make up her own mind how she was going to live her life.” Something about that phrase “independent young woman” rings false; it sounds like mediaspeak, not the way someone would describe themselves (who emphasizes their own youth?). There are other clunky phrases, too, but judge for yourself. I’m not accusing anyone of shenanigans, just saying the stiltedness raised an eyebrow.
One other thing. Re: this–
“On the internet, I found the clinic of Dr Magdy Hend, at the Regency Clinic on Harley Street…
“The operation would involve taking the ‘torn’ parts of my hymen and basically stitching them back together, adding further tissue from the side of my vagina.
“If I wanted, just prior to my wedding he could place a capsule of blood into the hymen which would ensure a healthy amount of blood. It sounds barbaric, but what choice did I have?”
–Hend was also the subject of the Channel 4 story and told them that while the capsule procedure is depicted in the booklet he shows patients, he doesn’t do it because it’s “too crude, he says, the surgery is obvious and the woman is in danger of getting caught.” Not sure how to account for the discrepancy here.
But in case you’re wondering, yes, the procedure is indeed covered by Britain’s national health care.

Um…no, it wasn’t.
Seems kinda odd that this religion requires women to both cover up all their hair and skin for modesty’s sake AND display the naughtiest bits for inspection.
But hey, what a cool job…I bet we could sell T-shirts with ‘Muslim Hymen Inspector’ on them.

Errr … and how does a husband “prove to his family” that his wife is a virgin? What? They going to all gather around the bedside on the wedding day?
This sounds like a bad Conan O’Brien skit.
Gregor on December 17, 2007 at 3:19 PM
It’s not uncommon for people to emphasize their own youth when discussing something they did when they were young that they no longer view in the same light. In this case losing her virginity.
For example: I used to be liberal and pro gun control, but I was young and stupid. :)

I think the mooslims have it almost right!!!! Women should be virgins when they get married. However, if they are not, the wedding should be off, but she should not be killed. That would be going too far. A simple horse-whipping should get the point across. Then when her parents die, there will be no shame and she can marry. See? Problem solved.

I can see a fresh new mom who’d installed an ultra-heavy duty spring loaded retracto-hymen resulting in yet another religion taking root.
And an influx of surgeons Nip/Tucking a cluster of barely legal teens into row after marketable row of 9 year old A’ishah rent a strumpets.

Since I’ve never been to Pakistan, am I mistaken in assuming there aren’t a lot of Blond or Redheaded guys running around? Seems a strange detail to include. Am I nitpicking?
trubble on December 17, 2007 at 3:36 PM
Disgusting.
Besides, not all virgins bleed when they lose their virginity.
Esthier on December 17, 2007 at 3:36 PM
Also, if all they want is a little blood, wouldn’t it be safer and less expensive to just get married while you’re on your period? Why go through all the trouble of surgery?
Esthier on December 17, 2007 at 3:37 PM
I don’t get it.
“I’m an independent young woman, lived with a guy for a while, my parents’ house is a prison, but now I’m agreeing to an arranged marriage because a Muslim man will share my values.”
huh?
Quisp on December 17, 2007 at 3:38 PM
This is a major problem in Europastan. Ayaan Hirsi Ali goes into great detail about this topic in her first book “The Caged Virgin”.
Tony737 on December 17, 2007 at 3:43 PM
Menstruating women are unclean. Can’t go to the mosque, can’t get laid, can’t even get a divorce (have to be ritually pure to get divorced. I think it’s to make sure she’s not pregnant).
Quisp on December 17, 2007 at 3:47 PM
Yeah, Quisp, that juxtaposition struck me as rather strange too. And not just a Muslim man, but one still living in Pakistan and presumably of the local culture, which isn’t very supportive of “independent young women”.
Annoying Old Guy on December 17, 2007 at 3:48 PM
Why do Muslim men insist on virgins?
Obviously, they’re afraid they’d come off poorly in any comparison with other men, especially Western men.

Europastan? That sounds like a pasta dish.

What a historical transitions we’ve witnessed in Britain. I used to think of knights and Camelot,Henry VIII, Bagpipes, Shakespeare, Red Coats, and the Blitz…
But you gotta keep up with the times. So next time Britain comes up, I’ll think of muslim hymens.

Fortunately, no. I only read the quotes you posted. I think I’ll spare myself the painful details.

This is nothing new. I was working in Indonesia in the early 90’s and heard about this then.
Also, the groom’s family had the right to take the girl to a doctor prior to the wedding if they thought she wasn’t a virgin.

Anybody notice Pamela Anderson filed for divorce….
Now I’m not sayin she’s a ..
I’m just sayin……
CBarker on December 17, 2007 at 4:38 PM
That makes sense, but if she’s willing to lie and get surgery, couldn’t she just lie about this? Without going into details, it is possible that her husband wouldn’t be able to tell she was menstruating.

I believe in the first few chapters of The Caged Virgin Ayaan Hirsi Ali explains that virginity is proven by displaying the blood-soaked sheet after the marrigae is consummated.
She also explains that many girls in the Muslim world who have lost their virginity before marriage lacerate their vaginal walls before the consummation to produce incidental bleeding. The proliferation of hymen restoration surgery in Europe among young Muslim women is also discussed.

Thanks for that link, WriterMom. I might just take advantage of this now, in case I ever fall in love with a fundamentalist Muslim. A bargain is a bargain.

Coupla’ problems with that, bub.
If women should remain virgins until they marry (and men should/do NOT!), then one may presume that all the nice, acceptable and worthy women have, of course, never had sex. So if it’s ok for men not to be virgins, then they must have had sex with sluts, whores and trollops… right? And this makes HIM “worthy” to marry such a righteous woman???

The RoP. Putting the cult in culture.
I guess a little prick wouldn’t work.
soundingboard on December 17, 2007 at 6:56 PM
leepro your points are valid. In an ideal world both sexes would wait till marriage to have sex and then remain faithful to their spouse. It would stop a lot of problems STDs, children born out of wedlock(of course), and a few more that don’t take much of an imagination to envision. However, we are talking about people and people do what people have always been doing. The real test is how we deal with it. Words spoken in contempt or anger for what someone has done do not compare to what women in islam’s grasp have dealt with since it was established.

Well if her husband loved her they could just prick their fingers over the sheets the next morning or something, but obviously love and trust have nothing to do with this marriage. I find it hard to believe that she’s going to be happy trapped in a marriage in Pakistan after experiencing the freedom and education of western culture. Sounds like she wants to punish herself

With regard to proving virginity,… if even half as many people here had read Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s book Infidel as claim they bought it, they’d know that a physical inspection by women from both sides of the family ahead of the wedding night is common in some nations/tribes/caves.
doufree on December 18, 2007 at 11:05 AM
I haven’t bought or read it, but it’s on my Christmas wish list.
You’re coming off as fairly condescending here, but I have no idea why. These are women who live in Britain, not people in caves and tribes or even in Muslim nations. It’s a little alarming that these women would be afraid of death for an early loss of virginity.
