IEA: Iraq’s oil production now exceeds pre-war levels

New proof of progress, if any was still needed. Security has improved on the northern pipeline along with the success of the surge and the awakening in Anbar, to the point where an Iraqi oil official actually lowballed the amount they were exporting each day a few weeks ago when the pipeline reopened. He guessed 1.8 or 1.9 million barrels. Quoth the Beeb:

The IEA said Iraqi crude production is now running at 2.3 million barrels per day, compared with 1.9 million barrels at the start of this year.

It puts the rise down to the improving security situation in Iraq, especially in the north of the country…

In recent years this pipeline has been out of action for long periods due to sabotage attacks.

Since the summer there has been a marked downturn in all forms of violence in Iraq.

If the cold peace holds, the same oil official mentioned above expects a “sharp increase” in production up to three million bpd next year and, pie in the sky, as much as six million in six years. Where’s that coming from? Partly Kurdistan, which isn’t producing jack right now but hopes to be turning out one million bpd in five years if given the opportunity to exploit its oil fields.

It’d be nice to pretend this is a hedge against Iran’s oil weapon in the event of escalation, but let’s be honest: Given the size and strength of Iranian proxies in Iraq, those pipelines won’t last five minutes if Iran gives the word. In the short-term, though, it’s another hopeful sign for Bush to tout in the war-funding battle. Exit question: Do we trust the White House to be smart enough to mention this unprompted or are blogs going to have to nudge Dizzy Dana along?

Let it flow. Oh, and we get free for the next 50 years.

We did go there for oil, right?

sweet! I can start driving my souped up Hummer again.

Good. Now let’s get some of that hard-earned oil over here and bring those pump prices down

ToddonCapeCod on December 14, 2007 at 3:48 PM

US Casulties way down this month, so far:

8 US casulties by hostile fire
2 US casulties by non-hostile means

If this holds, we would have 22 casulties in December. That would be the lowest since 2/2004 (that was the lowest ever at 20)

bnelson44 on December 14, 2007 at 3:50 PM

wonderful. My Ford expedition finds Iraqi oil the tastiest.

John from OPFOR on December 14, 2007 at 3:51 PM

Pretty soon someone’s going to catch Sy Hersch sabotaging a pipeline in Anbar.

Hannibal Smith on December 14, 2007 at 3:53 PM

Iraqi oil, it’s the richest, most aromatic kind.

TheSitRep on December 14, 2007 at 3:54 PM

The oil field hands over there must be on the juice.

2.3 Billion per day? Where is all that going? Or where are the prophits from all that going?

Fighting the urge to be over confident lately. Keep it going boys and girls.

bnelson44 on December 14, 2007 at 3:50 PM

20% of use casulties are non-hostile? Is that typical? Does that seem like a high percentage? Can anyone explain?

factoid on December 14, 2007 at 4:17 PM

Ah yes spread the wealth as in Kuwait. Fred Thompson should promise to open up Anwar to do the same in the US, then iradicate the IRS. After all it’s our oil! IMAGINE THAT!

Probably wearing those tear-away underthings those kids invented. A wet willy would be better.

I can only hope we can say something similar about Iran’s refineries, or should that be refinery…

If we’re going to be starved for energy, then right back at ya!

You really don’t want to go there. Seriously. Ewue!

John from OPFOR – did I not point out an obvious conclusion?

This is good news for some and bad for others, yes?

Lots of heavy machinery, lots of people, some accidents. The percentage is meaningless–in peactime it would be 100%. At Guadalcanal or Iwo Jima it probably would’ve been less than 1%. Given the inherent dangers of the things being done on a daily basis, the solid number of 2 accidents actually strikes me as small. They’re obviously quite safety conscious over there.

Blacklake on December 14, 2007 at 4:36 PM

So now that “Iraq is worse off because of the war!” is dead, will the Dems go back to the “This is a War for Oil!” line based on the increased production?

BKennedy on December 14, 2007 at 4:38 PM

It’s the electricity stupid, er economy, uh maybe the central government, yeah that’s it the central government sucks. And they don’t have 2 ply toilet paper. Yesterday the Dems were trying to one up each other on who could get out of Iraq the quickest, ya know, it just might be a good idea to stick around a little while longer.
/oh hell who cares we ain’t got Bin Laden yet

LakeRuins on December 14, 2007 at 4:51 PM

Gee, wasn’t it only three or so months ago that a certain pessimistic atheist net-pundit was warning us that by now the Administration would likely be merely pretending that progress had been made, putting the best face possible on unavoidable withdrawals?

Yeah, most civilians can’t even imagine the amount of time and emphasis the military spends on safety training and accident prevention.

IEA: Iraq’s oil production now exceeds pre-war levels

So does this mean the Dems can turn back to the “blood for oil” rants?

RightWinged on December 14, 2007 at 9:11 PM

Do we trust the White House to be smart enough to mention this unprompted or are blogs going to have to nudge Dizzy Dana along?

They aren’t going to tout it, for the reason raised by BKennedy and RightWinged. And also because doing so, could promt more attacks on the pipelines, which AQI would figure to be easier thantrying to take on the US or the loccals directly. Politically, it’s probably the right tactic.

Karl on December 14, 2007 at 9:34 PM

I can’t wait for this piece of news to horrify the conspiracy kooks:

“We’re suuuuuuucking the oil out! How dare we fill our greedy capitalist pockets with an American boy’s blood … his mother’s tears … and the body parts of 5 year old Iraqi children! stop killing teh baby sealz no vlood ofr oil destroy ZOG!!!11!!!!1!1!”

RightWinged on December 14, 2007 at 9:11 PM

Lol I just saw that … You read my mind.

Ryan Gandy on December 15, 2007 at 2:46 PM

The money from this is going directly to the Iraqi people. The Iraqi government’s budget income is largely from the sale of oil, most of it going to world markets via Turkey and shipping.

the “blood for oil” mantra has been proven to be a lie.
