Video: The end of culture

posted at 8:04 pm on December 13, 2007 by Allahpundit

It’s Chris Crocker’s world, people. We’re just living in it. This is where it all ends: Not in the references themselves but in the fact that everyone but everyone — except Bill O’Reilly, of course — gets the references.

Somewhere, Theodore Dalrymple weeps softly into a scented chiffon handkerchief.

Would someone please offer this mindless aberration a one-way ticket to Iran?

At first I wasn’t sure if this was an ad before the movie. It just turned out to be an awesome ad that I enjoyed watching.

I don’t know, nor care, what they’re selling, but good on you, nameless faceless mega-corporation and your brilliant advertising agency.

askheaves on December 13, 2007 at 8:09 PM

You’ve got a point there. We enable these morons by paying attention to them instead of real issues like “the Iraq.”

highhopes on December 13, 2007 at 8:10 PM

This WILL replace waterboarding. And just in time.

AZCON on December 13, 2007 at 8:14 PM

Chris Crocker, “Don’t tase me bro” and Ms. Teen SC “I personally believe” now officially qualify as “news.” (…according to AOL.)

My collies says:

So why do people get angry when you say “It’s ALL tabloid journalism, stupid.”?

CyberCipher on December 13, 2007 at 8:15 PM

I hate AOL

Win Win Win on December 13, 2007 at 8:21 PM

Ok, I admit- I laughed at Ms. Teen SC. btw, what was this an ad for???

John from OPFOR on December 13, 2007 at 8:25 PM

Wow, that was terrible.

Zorro on December 13, 2007 at 8:28 PM

You’re always there for me, Noonan. Thick and thin.

Allahpundit on December 13, 2007 at 8:29 PM

You should buy up all the Chris Crocker action figures you can – they’ll be worth a fortune in 20 years.

More keepons, less morons.

MT on December 13, 2007 at 8:43 PM

I personally believe, that was funny, such as.
Leave everybody alone.

christophercube on December 13, 2007 at 9:01 PM

I liked it. It’s important to showcase these great role models for the next generation to look up to.

stonemeister on December 13, 2007 at 9:05 PM

Each bit was

Way too long.

They over-estimate the attn. span of their aol‘ers.

15 seconds is all iT needed.

Or deserved.

(AND ALL IT TOOK TO TYPE THIS. Bro.)

profitsbeard on December 13, 2007 at 9:11 PM

Great ad! Show’s what complete asstards Andrew Meyer, Chris Cocker, and Lauren Upton are in today’s SeeBS news.

I think it is hilarious parody on the tardness of Andrew Meyer, Chris Crocker, & Lauren Upton.

It is a good laugh, but at the same time, I shed a tear for the idiocy that has become our American culture.

Fricking idiots and their 15 minutes of idiotic fame. They might as well just stick with Britney Spears beaver shots.

BobJones-77 on December 13, 2007 at 9:18 PM

Ha Ha Ha!Too funny and smart for aol users.

Admit it – you’re just jealous of his relationship with MKH…

LagunaDave on December 13, 2007 at 9:59 PM

I wonder what the bro thinks when he sees this.

Tzetzes on December 13, 2007 at 10:19 PM

good book. i’m half way through and i’m pretty much certain i’ll just open life at the bottom the second i put it down.

jummy on December 13, 2007 at 10:31 PM

I saved myself 15 seconds by switching to a Geico ad.

MrC_5150 on December 13, 2007 at 10:38 PM

I gotta admit, I thought it was funny.

And I thought it was a GEICO commercial until the AOL logo came up.

Hawkins1701 on December 13, 2007 at 10:44 PM

As an old geezer myself, I think of this as a Monty Pythonesque 21st century UpperClass Twit of the Year show.

Ripping good snort, that.

Always Right on December 13, 2007 at 10:47 PM

Carrying the sheet around as a backdrop was a nice touch.

mikeyboss on December 13, 2007 at 10:54 PM

RushBaby on December 13, 2007 at 10:59 PM

Annoying Old Guy on December 13, 2007 at 11:12 PM

That was funny…but isn’t torture illegal? You can’t make me watch it again!

Jezla on December 13, 2007 at 11:23 PM

Her roots are showing. Time for a touch up.

awake on December 13, 2007 at 11:29 PM

AOL sucks, but I lost it when she mentioned ‘the Iraq’.

bikermailman on December 13, 2007 at 11:54 PM

Who’s the guy behind the counter supposed to be?

mesablue on December 14, 2007 at 1:05 AM

They should have hired Robot Chicken to do it for them.

MirCat on December 14, 2007 at 1:15 AM

You’re always there for me, Noonan. Thick and thin.

Yes. But let’s make it sound more like we share a dumbass sense of humor, and less like I’m a sycophant.

John from OPFOR on December 14, 2007 at 1:41 AM

I’m right there with ya! I laughed out loud watching that. What a great ad. Especially for AOL.

…and

Are you kidding?!?!??!

FREAKING HYSTERICAL!!!

See? I’m a trendsetter baby.

John from OPFOR on December 14, 2007 at 1:42 AM

Unbearable. That’s what the shotgun under the counter is for.

T J Green on December 14, 2007 at 2:00 AM

Now if only they could have had Taze come in to buy, “Chocolate Rain”…YOOHOO.

Sensei Ern on December 14, 2007 at 8:55 AM

If the people here who didn’t like this thing had a tenth of the ability the people who put it together had, perhaps they’d appreciate it more.

I thought it was perfect from first frame to last, and it only got better and better. While the script and acting performances were terrific, it was the clerk who really stole the show. What a great range of emotion, from surprise, to shock, to casually returning to his newspaper.

Far from being the end of culture, AP, I would suggest it’s just the opposite. The recognition and derision of culture’s sillier moments is a portent of better things to come.

Or so it says here.

Dr. Mercury on December 14, 2007 at 9:23 AM

Had to come back and watch it again this morning – twice! Just for the fun of it. Good thing I did, too. Wouldn’t have wanted to miss Dr. Mercury’s take on it. Nice.

RushBaby on December 14, 2007 at 10:17 AM

I came back again as well and it was funnier the second time. Well said indeed Dr. Mercury. I still have no use for aol however.

BL@KBIRD on December 14, 2007 at 11:03 AM

That reminds me of the Dave Chappelle skit where the internet was a mall. http://www.thetubevideo.com/funny-chappelles-show/

I enjoyed the clip but now I despise myself.

ronsfi on December 14, 2007 at 11:12 AM

A thought occured to me as I wrote up a blurb for it on my own site.

AP calling it the “end of culture” isn’t because of the stories, themselves, but that we all recognize the stories.

Yet it was AP who linked us to all three original stories to begin with.

Hum.

For those of you who want to save this gem to your computer, I’ve converted the YouTube FLV to a more-playable WMV and jacked up the size. It’s easy to save. If you don’t know how, instructions are in the ‘Media’ section.

Dr. Mercury on December 14, 2007 at 11:21 AM

In AP’s defense: A big part of culture is shared inside jokes. End Of Culture and the BOR barb are rhetorical devices–irony inviting us to enjoy a little frisson of simultaneous amusement at ourselves and a little jolt of superiority.

I’ve been accused of overanalyzing topics here at HA; I’m reluctant to post what I’ve just written. But, the thread is heading to the vault, so who’s going to read it anyway.

RushBaby on December 14, 2007 at 11:41 AM

What do you want to bet that next Halloween there’s going to be a lot of these three walking around. I pretty sure I’ll be dressing up as Chris Crocker…ahh, good times.
