Pelosi: Republicans “like” the war Updated

The Speaker of the House is beneath contempt.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is drawing heat for suggesting her political opponents are fond of the war in Iraq.
“The grassroots are justifiably disappointed and I am too that we could not do something to end this war,” Pelosi said at a press conference today. “The assumption that I made that the Republicans would soon see the light and listen to their constituents was not an accurate one.”
She continued: “They like this war. They want this war to continue. We thought that they shared the view of so many people in our country that we need a new direction in Iraq. To affect that we need redeployment of our troops with a goal of a year to do that. But the Republicans have made it very clear that this is just not George Bush’s war, this is the war of the Republicans in Congress.”
Asked to clarify her use of the word “like,” Pelosi backed off her statement of moments before.
“When I say ‘like,’ I shouldn’t say they ‘like’ the war. They support the war, the course of action that the president is on and they are not questioning in terms of his implementation of the war, the execution of the war.”
Yeah, she backed off once she realized what a foolish thing she had said, and perhaps anticipating the blistering response she would earn. But what she said is what she really thinks. What a crow. Republicans don’t “like” the war. We just want to fight it to win it.
Her “backing off” is nearly as mistaken as her initial statement. Many if not most Republicans are on the record criticizing various aspects of the handling of the war. I don’t know of anyone who thinks it has been handled perfectly. Sen. McCain is basing part of his candidacy for president on having been the first to criticize the Bush administration on the war while offering up a viable strategy to win it.
Pelosi is simply not a leader worthy of the office she holds. She’s not up to the job. Check out her record just in the past few weeks. Or recall that she contemplated putting the disgraced and corrupt Alcee Hastings in charge of the House Intelligence Committee. Or her attempt to put Jack “Abscam” Murtha in as Majority Leader. Or her for-it-before-she-was-against-it dishonesty on waterboarding.
What a thoroughly awful leader San Fran Nan is.
Update: Gateway Pundit has video of San Fran Nan’s speech.

But I suppose it is the most ethical congress evah considering it has kept Pelosi from screwing up the country.

I watched that whole thing on Cspan 3 today to make sure I was tuned into for the debate..the rest of the press conference didn’t go much better either.

Pelosi is a despicable ass and a complete fool.
rplat on December 13, 2007 at 5:26 PM
Exactly. No one – no one – likes the fact that soldiers are dying, that innocents are dying. No one is gleeful when we hear news of another car bomb or IED going off in a market place, or underneath a convoy.
But we do understand that this war is a long one, and one that needs to be won in order to defend our nation’s essential freedoms, and to give the Iraqis a shot at freedom themselves.

Are we sure she wasn’t just having a Miss South Carolina moment?
“They, like, this war? And such. Personally, I believe, that we’re… that is, we Democrats, we’re a disappointment. And such.”

We like to win wars. We hate to lose wars. We would prefer it if the international community opposed the brutal dictators who dare free nations to stop them by force.

I love when liberals are honest, keep telling us what you really think, lefties!

Since when is trying to WIN the war not doing something to end the war. It seems to me WINNING ended WWII pretty good in Japan and Europe.
No, this is AMERICA’s war. I understand that the Speaker doesn’t think that Republicans are actually Americans. I understand that she thinks Assad and Hussein are Americans. But this war is waged by AMERICA’s military. She sees two Americas like Edwards – Democrat America and Republican America.
Truer words have never been spoken.

Not “I didn’t mean it” but “shouldn’t say it.” Nuance.
Note too her revised position–we’re just stupid sheep. Nice segue from one smear to the other.

She likely sees herself as being a citizen of the world, same as she does Assad and Hussein, and feels that World Citizenship is far, far more important than mere nationality.

Not surprising. Liberals are the masters of projecting bull$hit aspirations on other people.
How could anyone not want what I want? Mind boggling.

Well said. It is just like saying that Democrats like killing babies because they like abortion. I agree completely. How does the spin taste now Pelosi?

Merry Christmas Nancy. May you surge forward into the New Year.

Democrats like the war, too. Actually, they LOVE the damned thing. If not for the war, they would be completely invisible.

It’s shameful that she sits on that perch, and we’re to blame, we the electorate.

Rush played a clip today of Harry Reid distancing himself entirely from Pelosi. Reid said that the Speaker ran the House herself with an iron hand, and was a strong independent woman, and he had no control over what occurs there. Blue on Blue warfare. Excellent.

Yes, we had to “teach the Republicans a lesson.” Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face.

I think she’s inadvertently a bit right. Her intent, no doubt, was to suggest that Republicans like it when American soldiers die, or enjoy warfare as a strange end in itself, which is clearly false. But there are things about the current war(s) that I, for one, like. I like that UBL no longer enjoys the comforts of a host nation from which to stage attacks on the US and its interests. I like that the monsters of the Taliban have lost their national power, and are either dead or on the run. I like that Saddam Hussein is dead. I like that his rapist thug sons are dead. I like that a USAF F-16 dropped a 500 pound JDAM on Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. I like that Iraq is not a potential host nation for Al Qaeda camps. I like the thought that Islamists across the globe live in fear of the US military. I like that a substantial portion of that military operates on the doorstep of Iran. I like that the surge has worked. I like that American troops do not give up.
There’s a lot I don’t like, of course, like US service casualties, Iraqi civilian deaths, the financial toll of war, pervasive anti-victory bias in the American media, and Nancy Pelosi. But sometimes it’s better to stay focused on the positive.

An awesome analogy. Would it be too much to hope for that someone points it out to her?
Frozen Tex on December 13, 2007 at 5:51 PM
Gee, when you put it that way, there’s an awful lot to like!
Frozen Tex on December 13, 2007 at 5:52 PM
Pelosi’s excuse for putting on legislation that will not work is she won’t lower her standards to doing the countries job by stooping to the lowest common denominator.
CommentGuy on December 13, 2007 at 5:55 PM
Very good point. Force is an excellent and ultimately necessary foreign policy tool. Pelosi reminds us that for Dem’s., the use of force is off the table. They prefer the smarmy bureaucratic “soft power” of the EU.
JiangxiDad on December 13, 2007 at 5:56 PM
No genius, nobody *likes* war, but what we *do* like is our way of life and we don’t want our grandkids to lose that way of life to a bunch of third world, 7th century, cave dwelling, woman beating, child molesting barbarians!
Tony737 on December 13, 2007 at 5:56 PM
A sample of what is being said on the far left
From what I understand, Pelosi is backing down because Reid wouldn’t go along with Obey’s plan to stand firm. In the Senate, I think Chris Dodd is the obvious choice to replace Reid, given that Dodd has demonstrated leadership and once lost a majority leader campaign by a single vote. Then again, I have no idea how to help engineer a replacement of Congressional leadership. I also don’t know who would do a better job in the House than Pelosi.
If the leadership we have isn’t getting the job done, we need to think about how to get better leadership. Perhaps we could even change leadership behavior without actually replacing the leaders. I don’t really know, but I do know that what we are doing right now isn’t working.

Indeed we do.
And yet, because the voters put the Democrats into the Congressional majority, we collectively gave them power.
Therefore, what we are getting now is no less and no more than what we deserve.
So it shall be in ‘08 if, despite their stewardship of the worst Congress ever, the voters give the Democrats the White House.
Hawkins1701 on December 13, 2007 at 6:45 PM
Dems to American Voters in ‘08:
“We need you to give us the White House, too. We can’t make this government-thingy work unless we have the complete set!”

I got an e-mail today from somebody currently in a FOB in Iraq. He says that, from what he can tell, we definitely have turned a corner (his words).
Then I hear a nasty vile woman like Nancy Pelosi declare that the GOP loves it when we send troops in harm’s way. This is treason not the least because it is the Democrat party that does the happy dance in Congress whenever a “milestone” has been reached in the number of deaths. Truth be told it is Democrats who like this war because they can use it as a cudgel against this administration. Days like this I almost wish that the moonbats who put traitors like Pelosi in Congress follow through and elect Cindy Sheehan. Sheehan wouldn’t have the power that the current representative of Sodom-on-the-Bay has.

Yes to all, and to add on
- having NATO and so many American troops close to Pakistan
- having developed, and continuing to, military technology, strategies and tactics which otherwise wouldn’t even be on the radar
- having found out who the real friend are – it is always very clarifying
- having found out where our media really stands
- having found out where the liberals stand on so many issues
The Europeans can afford so much idealistic pontification for one reason alone – the fact that the U.S.A. is there to defend them.
